Overlooked gem.   Opti101
Ah, Gamehouse. A truly under-rated company. Producing nostalgic (At least for me) games such as "Bounce out", "Text twist" and "Super pop and drop". But one that I hold dear is a little gem known as "Super Collapse!" More specifically "Super Collapse! II". Before I get into the review, Let me give you a little background. Gamehouse is a company that launched in 1998 with one of their first games being "Collapse!" It was an online free flash game still available to play on MSN games as it was way back when. The game was a slow-paced puzzle game where a tower of red, blue, and green blocks would rise slowly and rather than dropping matching coloured blocks onto each-other you would have to click groups of blocks that would form as the tower grew. If the tower hit the top of the screen you would lose. The game was a hit because of how addictive it was. Later on a game known as "Super Collapse!" was released. It was a more polished version of collapse, however you would have to pay 9.99$ too own it. You can actually still buy it today. Finally in the year 2000. Super collapse II came out and DANG was it ever fun. Unlike the old games this one was fast paced as you could make the tower grow yourself in order to make matches at a faster pace in order too get more points. There were also 3 new modes. But we will get into those later. Super collapse II was given great reviews and was a success! Because of this the game was ported to the GBA. And that's the version we are gonna check out!
So the first thing I would like to mention is that this game was released 3 years after its original PC release. I just found this odd. Anyway the menu comes up and has of course the 4 modes. You can select any of these right off the bat. They do not need to be unlocked. Classic mode is what I mentioned before. You break blocks to stop a tower from hitting the top and the game gets harder as time goes on by adding new coloured blocks such as white and yellow as well as near-indestructible grey blocks that can only be blow up with bombs. Bombs spawn randomly as the tower rises. Black bombs simple blow up all blocks in their radius however coloured bombs blow up EVERY block of their colour. (ex. Red bomb destroy all red blocks on screen at the moment.) to win a level you simply have too keep the tower from reaching the top until the line limit runs out.
The 2nd mode is known as "Relapse". It is twice as hard as classic mode due to the fact that the blocks come from the bottom and top of the screen. Other than that its pretty much the exact same and yet it still manages too feel a LOT different from the classic mode.
The 3rd mode is "Strategy". This mode is also hard because whenever you destroy a group a blocks in this mode the tower rises where as normally it takes about 5 seconds to rise. This makes planning ahead crucial.
The 4th mode is "Puzzle". This is a simple puzzle mode where the tower does not rise but rather you have to clear the screen completely. There are quite a few unique puzzles to complete. Again, Planning ahead is crucial.
That's all for the review. Now for the overview!
GRAPHICS
You can't say much about the graphics for a 2003 puzzle game on the GBA. But for what they are, They are alright.
SOUND
Catchy tunes and satisfying sound effects. Awesome.
ADDICTIVENESS
Needless too say. The game became somewhat popular because of how addictive it is. And that coupled with the fast paced gameplay makes it addictive as heck!
STORY
N/A
DEPTH
Plenty to do. The modes are replay-able as the levels are randomly generated with the exception of puzzle mode.
DIFFICULTY
The game is very difficult once you get far enough into it.
OVERALL
Addictive puzzle action. Fun as all hell. 9.5/10
Seriously though. Play it.
