Super Castlevania IV -- Hard, But Very Rewarding   SavatoX
Castlevania on NES. It was a great game. And it goes to prove, that just because a game is hard, that doesn't mean it's bad. But then came its unholy successor, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. Consisting of a bunch of riddles that you have a snowball's chance in a fire of solving, constant grinding for hearts, outrageous platforming, three ultra-easy bosses, and a castle with nothing in it. The only upside to that waste of plastic was the music. Then came the real Castlevania II, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. This game was full of innovative features like character swapping, and being able to choose your own path that made it better than the first game without alienating the series at all. This marked the end of a remarkable trilogy of games. But believe it or not, we weren't done with these games. No, there was yet another game in the series, now on Super Nintendo. And it wasn't just "Castlevania IV", no, it was SUPER Castlevania IV, and well deserving of that name.
Why am I telling you stuff that you already know? I have no idea. Probably just to build up suspense, I guess. *sigh* Let's just start the game already.
Story
There really isn't much to say about the story. It's exactly the same for most of the series. Dracula has been resurrected, and Simon has to stop him. However, this category does gain some amount of points for having an awesome cutscene at the beginning. But still, this stays at a six, for lack of originality. This would be a little more understandable if this were NES, but this is SUPER NES! This is 16-bit we're talking about!
Gameplay
For me, gameplay always trumps story. These are video GAMES. If I can't enjoy PLAYING them, then they have failed their purpose. Well, that's what stage 5 of the first game was: Irritatingly difficult, and not fun to play. Don't get me wrong, the first game was good, but it had no idea when enough was enough. Gameplay was greatly improved with this game. You were restricted to whipping in front of you previously, and there was no going back when you jumped. Here, however, you can whip in five different directions! Eight in the air. If you hold the attack button and move the d-pad in all directions, you can use your whip as a shield, sort of. They still need to fix the issue with the hearts, though.
Graphics and Sound
Even for a game on the Super Nintendo, Super Castlevania IV was very well designed. The graphics really catch that Castlevania atmosphere, and if you look closely, you can see just how much detail they put into it, right down to the first screen. The music is among the best I've heard on SNES, even rivaling Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid. I love the sound effects. It's so realistic. Listen to the leather whip sound. Sounds pretty weak, doesn't it? Well, that's what it is! Weak! But upgrade to the chain whip, and listen to its sound. That really captures how much more powerful it is than the leather whip.
Addictiveness
*plays Castlevania*
Grrrrr...! I will beat this game if it's the last thing I ever do!
*plays Castlevania II: Simon's Quest*
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
*plays Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse*
Ugh! This game is impossible! I give up!
*plays Super Castlevania IV*
I don't believe what I'm seeing! A Castlevania game that's fun to play, for extended periods of time!
Depth
^^^ That's how much more work was put into it. It follows a really linear style, so there's not much to do except follow the path. But this game is still pretty long, so you definitely can't beat it in one sitting (unless somehow you're even more obsessed with video games than I am).
Difficulty
Okay, that statement just now was definitely true. Because a Castlevania game is always known for having a massive amount of difficulty. You'll die so much from falling, that you'll eventually forget that the game has a LIFE BAR. Don't worry, it's easier than the NES games. But it's still pretty hard. But no more cheap shots from those Medusa Heads and Ravens. If you die, you can't say that the game is cheating. You know, come to think of it, Konami games tend to be pretty difficult. There's Castlevania, Contra, Gradius, and Metal Gear Solid. For a company whose name translates to "little south beauty", these certainly don't seem like beautiful games to me! At least, not in terms of difficulty.
Conclusion
There is lots to get from this game. Although it's extremely linear, it's well worth the 15 Viz it costs in the Retro Game Room. It's incredibly detailed. It's atmospheric. It plays well. And it's even fairly challenging.
If you're looking for a hard game, but want it to be fun, this is a game for you.

“Dracula arises from his grave, and so does Simon Belmont!”   sonicthehedgeho..
As Dracula was destroyed a 2nd time many years ago well 100 years to be exact, Simon thought he was finally ridden of the curse of
Dracula however; things weren’t as they seemed at the time while Simon had left the world of Transylvania after his days on the NES (Excluding Castlevania III). Dracula was slowly gaining his power back and within 100 years he would be completely revived, unfortunately for the world of Transylvania this year is the 100th year and now the forces of evil within Dracula are at full power and ready he’s ready to wreak havoc once again. Just like Dracula though another person has arisen from the mysterious shadows and fog covering the castle in
the distance, this person is Simon Belmont and he’s prepared to take down Dracula once and for ALL! It’s time for the vampire killer to start his journey and it’s time for us to start this review.
Graphics: 9 out of 10
Super Castlevania IV takes your face away from the TV screen of the 8-Bit NES Castlevania games, knocks you unconscious and when you awaken once again you find yourself in a bright and very detailed world. This game definitely stacks up among the best looking 2-D games on the Super Nintendo such as Mega Man 7, Contra III, and Legend of Zelda:  A Link to The Past. If you want proof of what I mean with how the graphics give you a nice feel with the environment in the level/area you’re on then take a look at level 4-2 in which when you get into a certain part in the room you have to whip onto and hold onto a pendulum and you must swing back and forth in order to make it onto this one platform while the room is spinning, you can also look at level 4-3 where the background rotates in a circular pattern  however; the unlike the previous part the room itself doesn’t rotate or move at all which really proved the Super Nintendo’s
graphical capabilities. So with everything I have described I’m going to give this game a 9 out of 10 for graphics.
Sound: 10 out of 10
Already the first Castlevania games music left a huge impression on its players and as the games progressed forwards the music
continued to grow greater each time. Then Nintendo released their newest edition to the series called Super Castlevania IV which took the series to a new level of musical capabilities as right when you start up the game and progress through the first few minutes of the game, the melody of area 1-1 with its eerie and chilling theme really puts you in a mood where you know you must take this game seriously with your full attention. Once you reach area 1-2 though the music picks up and gives you a feeling of power in which you can go through the level cautiously but also without the worry of being overwhelmed by the enemies that lay ahead of you. There are many more tracks I can talk about like stage 4-1 but; I shouldn't’t talk only about the music here so let’s move on with the sound effects which have been remastered and they sound amazing. When you use your whip to attack now it actually sounds like if you were to grab a wire or anything like a whip and slash your hand forward and you hear that familiar sound of your item cracking at the wind in the air, not only that but when you take damage your character makes a sound of agony instead of just flying back like in the previous games. Excellent and superb job on the sound department for this game a perfect score of 10 out of 10 is deserved here!
Addictiveness: 8 out of 10
Much like the previous games (excluding Simon’s Quest) this game has a high level of replay-ability and personally in my opinion it has an
even greater level of addictiveness since in this game you can whip in 8 directions which makes attacking enemies and bosses a lot easier and not so cheap anymore especially with flying enemies, not only can you whip in all 8 directions but you can crouch and walk at the same time as well as having more control when you jump from platform to platform or from pillar to pillar which makes this game more enjoyable since you have more control over your character. This game doesn’t have as much addictiveness value as other games on the system like: Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past however; you probably will pick this game up every once in a while and I would definitely pick it up from time to time rather than picking up the previous games in the series, so I’m giving the addictiveness an 8 out of 10.
Story: 10 out of 10
As I stated in my introduction every 100 years the darkness that has been sealed away eventually awakens once more and prepares his plan to destroy his main enemy Simon Belmont. Although; if Dracula thinks that Simon has lost power after all these years of fighting then he has seriously underestimated Simon’s power, the opposition also stands true as well because if Simon think’s his fight against Dracula will go so smoothly he is foolish and hasn’t thought hardly enough about the battle that lays ahead of him. When you finally face off against the master of despair, be prepared for this as it will be rough so this story earns a perfect 10 out of 10 in my own opinion.
Depth: 7 out of 10
Now while this game may not have as high of an addictiveness value compared to other games on the system the amount of levels/areas in this game certainly live up to other games on the system and even surpasses some as well. But; sometimes with every upside there is a downside as well and one of them is the lack of things to do once you beat the game as all there is left to do is play through the game again or use a password to make the game harder which I really feel they could have added more into this game like once you beat the game you have the opportunity to play as other characters besides Simon Belmont such as Trevor Belmont or Alucard so unfortunately I can only give the depth of this game a 7 out of 10.
Difficulty: 7 out of 10
The Castlevania games are well known for their high level of difficulty especially the NES and N64 Castlevania games. The Nintendo
Entertainment Systems games difficulty was the result of not being able to whip in any direction and not having free control of your jump when you are in mid-air, on the other hand the Nintendo 64’s games were the result on having bad camera angles where you could easily fall into a pit or lava because you couldn't’t see what was below you. But when Castlevania was first released on the Super Nintendo they changed what the NES games lacked and made the difficulty fair for the most part of course the game was still a challenge but you need to
have challenge in a game to thoroughly enjoy it. Being able to whip in all 8 directions and having control up your jump even in mid-air as well as crouching and being able to walk forward made this games difficulty drop drastically from previous installments, now hold on for just 1 second though if you think this game is going to be all flowers and dandelions since it’s difficulty isn’t as high then prepare for a real whip lashing because you will get your butt handed to you at many points in the game specifically at the boss battles as you must be completely focused in order to dodge the multiple obstacles that will fly and try to attack you all over the screen while you try to damage the boss. I think they did a great job with how they leveled out the difficulty in this game so this deserves a 7 out of 10.
So now this bring us to the end of our review, just like Simon who has come to the end of his long journey as he looks across the river
below Dracula’s castle and this seems like the last time we may hear from Simon anymore. I guess *grabs whip* it’s time for someone else to take his place for when the evil that has once again been sealed away, awakens once more. It’s time to prepare for another battle *whips candles* with the king of darkness in this land *picks up hearts, and axe*so I can perish Dracula when he awakens in the newest century! *collects orb*

Super Castlevania 4 Review   starwars293
Hey guys, this is starwars293 reviewing another game. This time, I am reviewing Super Castlevania 4 for the Super Nintendo. This is such a great game to play. It's pretty much a remake of the first Castlevania game for the NES. They added new features to the game.
One of those new features is that you can whip in 8 directions now. You can whip up and down, side to side and diagonally. This will help a lot during the game. It will help you attack enemies above and that are below you. It will also be easier to beat the game like that.
Another feature is that you can swing from your whip and that you can block projectiles by just holding the attack button. The swinging part is this. All you need to do is find a round metal thing that can attach your whip to it. Once that's done, press the left and right button back and forth. It's fun to do it. It will also be used to swing from a jump that you can't reach.
This game really isn't that hard now that you have the new features. They added some new stuff to the stages. Some of these stages are hard to beat. There are also new bosses like a two headed dragon that I can't remember its name. Some of the new bosses are pretty hard. Death is now the second hardest boss in the game. If you fight Dracula and take his health down to almost half I believe, he will use a new move and his most powerful move on you.
Some of the classic music is back from the NES games. Bloody Tears, Vampire Killer and all those music soundtracks. My favorite out of all of those in the game is Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears. It has even some good sound effects. There isn't a death theme though when you die.
You still play as Simon Belmont, the great grandson of Christopher Belmont. You have to journey through Dracula's castle, also known as Castlevania, to defeat him. Every 100 years, Dracula rises to cause mayhem and bring darkness to Transylvania. He fails every time he rises. You need to go through his castle, fight his minions and the big guy himself, Dracula. Now, lets move on to the review
Graphics- The graphics are great. They're a improvement of the first Castlevania game. The enemy sprites are really good. It might be on the SNES with some good quality, but this game has pretty good quality and graphics
Sound- The sound is great! Bringing back some of the classics like Bloody Tears and Vampire Killer, the two most famous soundtracks. Simon even has his own theme now. It is pretty good. It's almost as good as Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears.
Addictivness- I would play this game again since it has some good things about it, like the 8 direction whipping.
Story- 100 years after his defeat, Dracula rises again to cause mayhem and bringing darkness to Transylvania. However, a new Belmont is here to stop Dracula, Simon Belmont, the great grandson of Christopher Belmont who defeated Dracula 100 years ago.
Depth- It offers new things like whipping in 8 directions, new bosses and new enemies. It does take some time to beat it, so you need to be patient and calm to beat this game
Difficulty- This game is not that hard really. Some of the stages are hard to beat though. Even some of the enemies and bosses are hard.
Overall- A fun game with a great overall. This is a great game to play
Wrap Things Up- Super Castlevania 4 for the SNES is a great game to play. I would recommend that you would play this game. You will love this game and the whole game series
This has been another starwars293 review

It's back and better than ever.   Zircron Swift
Super Castlevania IV is when the height of Castlevania was reached. This takes the first Castlevania game and multiplies it many times. The music, the graphics, the game play....everything is better. But this game also gave me a fear. Yes, an irrational fear that makes me shiver when I see that.....that thing, or those things in a game. I'll tell you that later. But for now, the graphics. The style of the game is of a smoother design than the nes games. They are more eerie then the nes games. The animation is more fluid than the nes games. See a pattern? The backgrounds have so much detail in them. In the first level, there is a skull in the background. If you look closely, two bats will come out of the eye-sockets and fly off. Now that is attention to detail if I ever saw any. The cut-scenes where Dracula is resurrected (yet again) was just incredible. Simple but effective.
The story is much the same like how Dr. Wily escapes, builds eight more robot masters and tried to take over the world, or how Browser kidnaps Princess Peach again. Dracula and his castle has come back to enslave humanity, and it is your job....Simon, is it? No, that was from the first and second game, and the third was Trever, was it? And that was a prequel....I'm almost certain. And there's a song called Simons Theme, so it could be Simon Belmont....you know what? Names arn't important. I'm going to call him Simon Belmont. You are Simon, taking the legendary Vampire Kill (whip) to kill Dracula, hopefully once and for all (we all know he'll be back again in the next game, but don't tell Simon that *puts finger on lips*).
You start outside Casltevania, and work your way up to the castle, then work your way though the castle up the tower, meet by a boss-a-thon then finally you get to Dracula. The entrance to the Count is 95% always the same. you go up a stairway that is normally at a 30-45 degrees angel. Then there is a small drop down (very small), then you walk for a little while to the left often with candles there for you to whip, then you fight Dracular in a room, in which he always teleports into. Compare them with the next Castlevania game you play (not Simons Quest, that cameo doesn't appear there).
Now onto the game play. The controls were always a little stiff in the Castlevania games. When you jumped, you had no controll over that jump expect forward. You were thrown back quite some distance when you were hit. And you couldn't walk when crouching. Well, let me make your day, becuase in this game, they ironed out all those pesky little cresses and gave you more controll than ever! You can walk when crouching, you have complete control over your jumps, you can even jump backwards. you can whip in eight different directions, even straight down (even when jumping!). You can even do the Moonwalk up and down the stairs (which really isn't possible, but your Simon Belmont, you can do anything! The MoonWalk is a little tricky to do. You need to go to some stairs, go up them, then quickly press down. If done correctly, you'll still go up the stairs, only your facing the other way. Might not happen the first time). Being able to whip diangonally relly helps killing enermys in tricky places. Normally the ones that you need to jump to kill. This makes you get more into the game. Instead of you playing a character that follows a set of rules you must follow, you play someone who can follow thoses rules, but and bend them to your advantage. That is what makes this game so great. You are Simon Belmont. As before, you can destroy candles to get items such as hearts, sub-weapons, and whip upgrades. These whip upgrades come in parts. First, it makes your whip stronger, then longer. There are secrets in this game aswell.
Secrets? Secrets as in you break some blocks and something's in them, or you jump somewhere and you get bonus points?
No, no, sadly, there's a lot less of that in this game. Haven't found so many breakable walls with bonus points and stuff in. It's still there, just harder to find. But you want to focus on finding the three secret rooms. Yes, these rooms are fill with the best sub-weapons, lots of hearts, and chicken to eat for health. FInding these is like the gold mine for Castlevania. These might be found....well, there are only three. If you find anything suspiscous, check it out. You might fight that secret room. It's always worth looking for secrets in Draculas Castle!
Now last but not as nearly least, the music. The music. Ah, the music of Super Castlevania IV! The music just breaks the other music from Castlevania away. The music from the first level - Simons Theme - tells you that msuic from games can also be beautyful. Some of the best soundtracks are on this game. Some of which appear in other games. This is also true for the first game, which all of it's music was set as a bonus for another Castlevania game for the DS. Simons Theme also makes an appearence when fighting Dracula in Super Castlevania IV. Bloody tears was great in 8-bit music, but sometimes music can be better when updated. When you finish the game, you get the credits. You are also shown short clips of you playing though this game. At firs, I though the game accuratly recorded you playing to show you what you did, but then I found out that it did something I was sure I didn't Whip straight down. I didn't know you could do that when jumping until I saw it. But still, with the music in the background, it makes a very graceful effect.
This might sound like the perfect game if you like side-scrolling, but there is one flaw, one that gave me a fear that would never go away. I'm not talking about bugs or glitches or anything like that. it started with the first Castlevania game, second level, the room before the corridor that lead to the big Medusa Head. You had you get though these smashing spiked things that would kill you if you got crushed under them. That freaked me out. It freaked me out more when I found out if you just touched the side of them, you'll also die stiaight away. I hated this part, but they did crush you, so I didn't expect to just lose health. Now, this game takes everything from the first game and multiplys it many times. And I mean everything. This includes the spikes from that level and created a hell in its own castle. Level 8. This level is full of spikes that can kill you in one hit. Even if you touch the sides of the spike - which in real life if you touched the side of a spike, you wouldn't die stright away - you would die stright away. This created a fear for spikes, in games, it's instant death. When ever I see spikes, I take a deep breathe, and exhale when the threat is gone.
A little silly, really. But then came that part in level 8 that had those spikes coming out of the celling, and it looked like you couldn't crouch under them. You must realise that at this point, the slightest touch to spikes killed me instantly, I wasn't going to take the risk of dying again by crouching, besides, I didn't think I could crouch low enough. So I walked though, hoping hey woundn't touch me, and I got through after a couple of deaths. I was so thankful for getting past that level. The golfen level afterwards was a breathe of fresh air. but let me tell you something important. Very very important. When you get to that poin in level 8, you can crouch under those spikes. Don't suffer like I did.
This game is eaier than the firsr Castlevania game, but is still a good challenge. This game offers a hell of a lot, and is worth playing over and over. I even played the game with only the leather whip by my side. Yes, I did it. ^^
Overall, I give this game 9.3/10 Dispite that level 8 hell hole, it's a good hell hole that tells you not to mess with Dracula. It is inface perfect for its design (it's a toucher chamber), and I wouldn't change it for the world. The game is one of the best Konami have to offer. This game offers great music, a great gameplay, and almost perfect controll over Simon. Don't worry abou Death, he's hard, but easier than the nes one. That makes him even more epic as a boss. this is truely an epic game if there ever was one.

Castlevania jumps to 16-bit with an SNES classic   TheScarletSaiyan
The Castlevania series, created by Konami, did exceptionally well on the NES, releasing 3 games that were all enjoyed by many gamers. And when the Super Nintendo came out in 1991, Konami brought the Castlevania series to the 16-bit era in the best way possible, with the release of Super Castlevania IV. Although the game was basically a remake of the original Castlevania, Super Castlevania IV did not feel like a rehash at all, and definitely had the feel of a brand-new game. In my opinion, Super Castlevania IV is one of the best games on the SNES, and is one of the most addicting 2-D platformers ever made.
The story for this game is just like the original: Dracula has risen from his grave and is threatening Transylvania with his dark power, so it's up to Simon Belmont, armed with his whip and courage, to venture into Dracula's castle and defeat the count. However, unlike in the first Castlevania, you don't start Super Castlevania IV right outside Dracula's castle. You will have to explore forests, caves, a submerged city, and more just to reach the castle. And one you get inside, you'll explore many more unique areas, including a library, a room with massive swinging chandeliers that you have to jump on, a clock tower (every Castleveania game needs one), and more.
Super Castlevania IV has 11 stages, while the original only had 6, so the game is definitely longer and offers much more exploration. The graphics in this game are absolutely stunning, as each stage has wonderful sprites and backgrounds. For being one of the earliest games on the SNES, this game certainly has impressive visuals, particularly in the opening, where you see Dracula rise from his grave and fly off to his castle. The sky changes, lightning strikes, and an ominous mist fills the area, creating a chilling atmosphere that lets you know you are in for a real treat. The game is called "Super" Castlevania IV after all, and it certainly lives up to its name.
Speaking of super, the music in this game will just blow you away. Many pieces use the organ and help create a spooky atmosphere that definitely fits as you fight your way towards Dracula. Some songs in this game, like The Forest of Monsters in stage 2, even have an awesome percussion that is just so much fun to listen to. The boss music in this game gets you pumped to fight the many monsters Dracula sends to kill you, and the music that plays when you fight Dracula himself is one of the best boss themes I have ever heard in a video game, chilling and fitting for your final showdown.
One of the best parts of this game is how much better the gameplay is from the NES titles. Simon can now swing his trusty Vampire Killer (his whip) in 8 different directions: right, left, up, down, and even diagonally. In addition, Simon can hold his whip out in front of him, and spin it around to shield himself from enemy projectiles. And Simon can even use his whip to swing over certain pits. In the NES titles, you could only swing your whip left and right, which made killing enemies a much greater chore, but here, using the whip is so much easier. Also, the jumping in this game feels less stiff than in the NES games, although Simon still gets knocked back every time he takes a hit, so be very careful when you are near spikes or pits.
Just like in the previous Castlevania games, you have to be sure to whip any candles that you come across. Candles can drop  sub weapons, hearts (which act as ammunition for sub weapons), blocks with roman numerals on them that allow you to use 2 or 3 shots with a sub weapon at a time, chicken legs that restore your health, power ups for your whip, and bags of money that increase your score. You can also find some of these goodies hidden in certain walls, so make sure to constantly check your surroundings.
Speaking of sub weapons, you have 5 different sub weapons that you can use: daggers that you can throw in a lob fashion, daggers you can throw straight, crosses that act like boomerangs, a stopwatch that can freeze enemies for a short time, and holy water that can hit an enemy multiple times in one use. But be warned: you can only carry one sub weapon at a time. Whenever you get a sub weapon, if you had one before, you will lose it for the one you just got. So make sure to be very cautious when whipping candles if you have a sub weapon you really like.
Many classic enemies from the NES games appear in Super Castlevania IV, including skeletons, Medusa heads, axe-throwing knights, and many more. The sprites for the enemies are well-done, and definitely improvements from the NES games. The bosses in this game are downright awesome too, as you will fight some fearsome monsters that include famous ones such as Medusa, Frankenstein, and Death himself. Some of the bosses are fairly easy, but some, like Death, are quite difficult and will take skill to beat. Each boss in this game comes across as imposing and ferocious, and all of the boss designs are wonderful as well.
This game is quite challenging though, and it will take you many tries to get through all 11 stages. Some enemies are quite powerful and take many hits to skill, and some enemies just annoy you to no end. To make things worse, some stages have a lot of pits that can send you to an instant death, and you also have to watch out for spikes, which are a one-hit kill.  But when you beat the game, the feeling of victory that you get from conquering Dracula and his castle is just wonderful. As you watch the credits, you will know well and good that you have finished a great game.
Super Castlevania IV is one of the greatest games on the SNES, and I highly recommend this game to all gamers. The graphics are stunning, the music always fits the mood of the stage you are in, the bosses are epic, and the ending just makes you feel so triumphant.

Dark atmospheric 16 bit action horror   bsnowotter
Super Castlevania 4 is a 16-bit Super NES remake of the original Castlevania on the Nintendo.  While its action is not revolutionary and the ways it tries to show-off the Super NES's then-new hardware sometimes makes it feel more like a tech-demo than a finished game, the outstanding soundtrack, dark atmosphere and exciting boss-battles leave this title feeling like much more than the sum of its parts.
If not for a spooky opening scene and a satisfying conclusion, the story of Castlevania would be told exclusively by watching the hero Simon Belmont travel to and then through evil Dracula's castle (with the minor exception of a between-mission map sequence that show's the hero's progress).  However, I did not mark Castlevania too low for story because the different areas to which he travels are so distinct that playing through the game does feel like a story, in a way.  Suffice to say, the story consists of the Belmont clan rising up to kill Dracula every 100 years, and this time it's Simon Belmont's turn.
Where would an action horror game be without epic, spooky and atmospheric music?  On this front Castlevania 4 delivers in spades, and if you don't believe me there is a handy soundtest in the option menu at the beginning of the game (although the music is best enjoyed in the context of the undead action).  Whoever composed the music for this game not only cranked out some winning tunes but used the SNES's audio capabilities to its fullest.  Often the notes themselves just sound cool, not to mention how they are put together.
The graphics, while lacking a strong graphical style that ties it all together, shines brightly in places.  The main character kind of looks like a weak, grubby pixelated version of He-Man.  I hate to say it but the anime-inspired visual theme of its sequels is an improvement.  Many of the monsters, on the other hand, look amazing, as do the backgrounds, especially those monsters and scenes which seem invented just to stretch out the SNES hardware, such as a two headed dragon with a thoroughly animated neck, or rotating rooms that try to tip the hero onto spikes.
In the gameplay department, Castlevania consistently entertains but does not amaze.  Simon is a larger playable character than he was in the original game, and as if to show off he now can whip in all 8 directions and dangle his whip to form a shield or to hit objects in-between the 8 directions.  The problem with this humongous, versatile Simon is that he enjoys a huge advantage over every enemy he meets except some of the bosses.  As soon as they enter the screen, they are almost within range of his whip, so killing enemies consists of moving 1 or 2 steps into proper position and whipping repeatedly from a position of complete safety.  Other times it is even more simple and Simon need not even whip quickly to enjoy complete safety, such as when he stands underneath a platform supporting an Ax-wielding suit-of-armor demon enemy (an enemy who presented a challenge in all of the game's prequels).  It is not surprising that in the sequels the hero has lost his multi-directional whip, the challenge of playing through the levels is almost completely erased.  Luckily, the boss battles and certain platforming sections present a thrilling challenge, and if you are able to defeat Dracula after a grueling series of boss battles including against the angel of death you will feel quite accomplished.
If you are looking for some amazing music, great atmosphere and an early demonstration of some of the Super NES's graphical capabilities, not to mention a less crazy-difficult iteration of a long-running horror franchise, Castlevania 4 is for you.  If, however, you prefer your games more insanely challenging, you may prefer checking out a different Castlevania title such as its prequels or sequels.  If you prefer your Castlevania more Metroid-like the GBA sequels will hit the spot particularly well.

Super Castlevania 4 Review   Marcmoney
Overall - 9.4
Super Castlevania VI is probably the best game on the SNES.  It has good quality things and the game play is magnificent.  I still do not know why they called it "Super" Castlevania VI, why not Castlevania VI? :S
Graphics - 10
The graphics are amazing.  The background got me interested the most because usually some of the games start out in the castle, while this one starts outside. :)
Sound - 10
The sound is awesome.  It is like cool techno scary sounds playing in the background.  There are some effects on Simon when he gets hit, but not when he attacks.
Addictiveness - 8
I would play this a lot because it is so fun and the best part about it is that you are Simon, not some person people has never heard of.
Story - 5
The story sounds like it is from other games.  They usually say the "Every One Hundred Years" thing.  Nintendo makes these stories so lazy that they have to make it sound just like the other Castlevania games.  If you read the storyline after the menu screen, it will also say "Dracula is revived" saying.  How annoying can this get? If you keep reading, they say "Once Again Simon Belmont Is Called Upon To Destroy Dracula."  They are just making a rip off story games because not a lot of people read these stories in the beginning, usually they just play the game and enjoy it and not care about the story.
Depth - 8
The game has a lot of new features.  For example, you can now attack diagonally and you can do this move where you hold the attack button and can move your weapon anywhere while using the control pad.  That really helps in the game.  Another thing is that they put this thing when you touch your whip on it, you can swing to the other platform with it.  It just gives you the extra guilt in your stomach that makes you even more interested in the game.
Difficulty - 4
The game is not that hard.  You just have to look carefully in the game because some enemies cannot sometimes be noticeable.  The enemies in this game are a little easier now.
Wrap Things Up...
Super Castlevania VI is a good SNES game to play, one of the best ones in the SNES series of Castlevania.  I recommend trying this game out, it is a whole lot of fun.  By the way, in the beginning, I noticed that the level looked a little similar to Castlevania - Bloodlines on the Genesis.  How awkward is that? :)

Super Castlevania IV   TheGilsterMan
Ah, Super Castlevania IV. Like most people, after seeing the AVGN review, I decided to give this game a try. It was AWESOME!!!
The graphics really demonstrate what the Super Nintendo can do, and were really kickass for their time. The music was so catchy (Simon's theme was great) and the sound was good, but can get a little annoying.
Of course, you have to talk about the improvement of the controls. Now you can whip in all eight directions, instead of strictly left and right. You can also hold down the button and mess around with the D-Pad, causing Simon to just swing it around like an idiot. And, finally, you can use your whip for a grappling hook for those hard-to-reach jumps.
Now, Super Castlevania IV is a little easier than the Castlevania games on the NES, but this one is still hard! Thanks to a password, I managed to get to Dracula right away, but, holy damn, was that hard! His fireballs were so damn annoying!!! So, I would recommend cheat codes. They helped me see anything past level 3!
So, Overall, Super Castlevania IV is a great game. A little difficult, but if the Nerd can beat it, so can you! Definitely give this one a try!

Super Castlevania IV   mdynasty926
After slaving through the original Castlevania game, I decided to skip Simon's Quest and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and head straight for Super Castlevania IV because it's generally regarded as one of the better Castlevania games in the series. Seeing that I started playing these games through Aria of Sorrow, I was still trying to get used to playing the "classic Castlevania" as opposed to what people like to call the "Metroidvania" games that started with Symphony of the Night.
Super Castlevania IV takes the formula of the original game and doesn't try to innovate the series through drastic gameplay changes, such as the RPG elements in Simon's Quest and the various playable characters in Dracula's Curse, but instead IV sort of aimed to refine the series' gameplay instead of invent large new gameplay elements or introduce gimmicks. I found this to be a pretty pleasant thing especially coming straight out of Castlevania; the original was very innovative and important for its time, but by today's standards the game's controls in particular are pretty dated and for some, very difficult to handle. Now, whenever you jump, you have some bearing over how far you jump instead of having a set distance that could lead to your death. Along with that is the incredibly entertaining ability to control the direction you can whip, and this gives you much more freedom in how you can approach attacking enemies. I feel as if the game itself is just a lot more free. You're able to do much more and you're in control of your actions in a larger sense than in the original. Along with these slight but important gameplay changes is the whip-swinging segments, which in brief moments like "the revolving room" can really highlight how creative the developers were with their level design. Ultimately, it sort of leaves me longing a bit for even more though, since there are some really nice gameplay elements that they could potentially incorporate with the whip since it's so prominent in this game compared to its predecessors.
The presentation of the game overall complements the gameplay pretty well. There's a lot of nice effects to whenever you strike something with your whip, the flashes and the sounds, and it's satisfying when you're just wailing on things. The music of the game is incredibly catchy and memorable and fits the situations of the game really well. Put in some throwbacks to older games and you've got a really memorable soundtrack. All the monster designs and sprites are nicely done, and sometimes there's some Mode 7 for certain segments like jumping on large chandeliers or running through a large revolving tunnel. These really envelop you in the game's setting and events leading up to Simon Belmont's confrontation with Dracula once again.

Probably the largest complaint I have with this game aside from the fact that story is virtually the same as its predecessors is actually the gameplay at times, where specific aspects of the game are simply too easy in comparison to the rest of it. While the actual levels themselves can be pretty difficult, especially anything that involves fatal platforming, when you reach the boss of the level it usually only takes your incredibly long and powerful whip and you mashing the X button a couple times to kill it. While I did say that it was satisfying to wail on enemies with your whip, it seems almost petty to kill bosses with that strategy over and over. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it's almost optimal to exclusively use your whip in almost every fight in this game. The items that you get in the game have significantly less value and you never really have to worry about running out of hearts to use them unless you died and spawn right before a boss or something. But of course, then you can just use the whip and you're fine.
It's clear that Super Castlevania IV was made as an attempt to bring fans back to the franchise as well as expand its audiences, as the gameplay was refined to be much more accessible and entertaining by bringing some small gameplay changes. The great level design and intuitive controls give the game surprisingly substantial replay value, and the difficulty is satisfying enough for the hardcore fans to play while still being possible to advance through by those newer to the franchise. With all these in mind, Super Castlevania IV places itself among some of the more noteworthy titles in the SNES's library.

This game prooves the Angry Video Game Nerd is always right   survyguy79
AVGN was right, this is, by far, the best Castlevania game you can possibly get your hands on. If you are like me, you came here after The Angry Video Game Nerd reviewed all of the old school Castlevania games. There is really not much else to say about the game in general, but it is still a good SNES game today. The game is challenging, but not like the nes titles, which to the AVGN thinks are REALLY tough. Music is very catchy and will stay in you're head forever. You can finally whip in all 8 Directions (Now why couldn't Samus do that back then? She can morph into a ball, but not shoot in all 8 directions?). Graphics and gameplay are the best the series has had. I reccomend Super Castlevania IV to introduce yourself to the series. I personally suck at it though which gives it a high difficulty rating by me.

The game i've been putting off for a while to review...Super Castlevania IV Review   dazzsheil
The game I've been putting off to review for a while now,Super Castlevania IV....Why you ask? 1st I Had to actually play the game ALL THE WAY THROUGH 2nd,do some heavy Internet research on it,3rd,find other SNES Games to compare it to(Only 2 came up as SCVIV Comparable) and 4th came my overall opinion on Castlevania and IV In general...Lemme just get out of the way before I begin that I HATE Symphony of the Night and any other "Metroidvania"(especially Order of Eccliesia...Shanoa sucks!!)...It copied Metroid and that's that...Now without further ado....my Super Castlevania IV Review
GRAPHICS: One of the most elegant and stunning things to ever to come out of a console or even ANY Game ever made and is Rightfully so..I could just stare at it for hours on end imagining that I Was Simon Belmont.Only 1 SNES Game comes close to this in Graphics and that's Castlevania: Dracula X.The animations are what really shine though.
SOUND: One of the greatest composed soundtracks in any game in history...only A Link to the past done it Better on the Super NES.This game has an amazing original score,it also revisits Castlevanias of old, remixing the songs Vampire Killer(Castlevania) Bloody Tears/Camilla's Theme(Simons Quest) and The Beginning (Dracula's Curse)...epic soundtrack
ADDICTIVENESS: I Cannot tell you what I Could of done in the mount of time I Spent in this immersive world of awesomeness....Perfect controls, excellent enemy design and a epic finale to boot, Super Castlevania IV Is one game I'll bring to my grave.....sweet game!
STORY: Loses marks for being a remake but how can you improve on such a bizarre but brilliant story....Simon Belmont is one dude I Would love to be around for the rest of my bloody life...too bad he's been dead for like 700 years...The fight against Dracula is one of the most heated and anticipated moments of any game I've played to date...absolutly breathtaking
DEPTH: So many levels I Cannot Count....the road into and through Dracula's Castle is one Very long one and will keep you entertained for hours on end.....the way you can mess around with the whip actually made me die because I Was so immersed into what I Was doing it's that deep I Tell you.....
DIFFICULTY: Although Konami made this game with brilliant controls...the road to Dracula is one of many perils including bottomless pits, spikes Medusa heads, skeletons,Death himself,Camilla and of course the big and mighty man himself,Dracula
OVERALL: Well what can I say? This is the best game ever made. Gorgeous graphics, superb sound, and a brilliant story make this a real game that keeps you entertained for hours.....I Give Super Castlevania IV By Konami For the Super Nintendo Entertainment system my first and ONLY Perfect(not Overall 10) 10/10

Best Game Nintendo Has ever made in my opinion   InsaneUnicorn
Hey my fellow gamers and Psychos! InsaneUnicorn here to give you my review of Super Castlevania IV. Now a lot of people may not know this but Super Castlevania IV is known by far and worldwide as the best game out of the entire series, with its addicting and catchy music, intimidating bosses, Gaibon and Slogra for example which look like horrid pet mutations gone wrong, and spinning stages gives this game its edge in being the best Castlevania game ever. Now it is an SNES Console game so the difficulty was ridiculous, but if you have good QTR (Quick time Reflexes) and patience, you'll go through this game in a breeze. As well as the bosses and monsters in this game are used in other Castlevania games such as Portrait of Ruin with Slogra being a Boss Blitz enemy and a Boss in the little Labyrinth, i dont remember what its called since i haven't played PoR in years. But overall this game is a Goldie when it comes to classics and its up at the top with Final Fantasy franchise names such as FF IV, FF VI, and FF VII. So before you look it over as just another SNES game, give it a try and youll be humming the Vampire hunter theme for the next couple weeks.
Peace crazy people!

Secrets
Full Arsenal
In the last stage, before you climb the stairs to Dracula, jump down to the left. You will land on an invisible platform. Move all the way to the left of the screen and you will get full health, 99 hearts, a cross, a full upgraded whip, and a III stone.

Three Hidden Routes
There are three hidden branches from the main path in this game.

The first one is in stage 3-1. There will be a point where you must descend a short vertical shaft. Halfway down here is a wall of pillars to the left. These can easily be demolished, where you will find a small side room containing hearts, cash bags, and some Roast.

The second secret, which is an actual hidden Block, is in stage 6-2. At the very beginning you'll need to pass a hallway with Axe Knights and falling chandeliers. The third archway has a chandelier but no guard. Hit the floor a couple of times and it'll crumble, revealing a stairwell into a secret area.

The last one is in Block 9-2. The third section has you jump across a bed of spikes at the beginning. After this you'll see several whirlwind tunnels and some coffins. The last upper platform on the right has a coffin and a tunnel. Let the tunnel suck you in and you'll find a hidden area full of bonuses.
