Talent that had It’s Chance Taken Away

Star Fox was really one of a kind that made its success through a 3d environment, on rails, sci-fi shooter. Having three difficulties depending on the path you took rewarded you with different stages, and sometimes unforgivable challenges that drove a player to do his best. Star Fox 64 was later released around the time the N64 rumble pack was launched with the console. Using the same exact formula, however with conditions to fulfill to actually move on to different stages with more challenges, Star Fox 64 revolutionized gaming with its all-range mode. This mode would allow players to move freely in a 3-dimensional environment with very smooth flight controls. At the time, gamers thought that this was impossible on the SNES so it made the Nintendo 64 that more revolutionary…This was the Star Fox 2 Nintendo fondly spoke of. However, that is where players are wrong. Star Fox 2 was finished in its creation in Japan, yet, never released. However, one day, a ROM of its alpha phase suddenly popped up on the internet, but only a small amount of reactions occurred due to the number of people who thought they had the true Star Fox sequel.
Star Fox 2 was in fact, the beginning to Star Fox 64, introducing all-range mode, a map interface so similar to Star Fox 64’s stage screen, the vs battle mode (in a certain alpha version), missions that didn’t just involve getting to the end of a stage and defeating the boss, and Star Wolf. The SNES was in fact capable of 3d environments; however, it wasn’t as popular considering only so many games were released with the FX chip. Doom would be another 3d game on the SNES, however, no where compared to having only 3D models in the entire game (aside from enemy circular beams). This was a true and worthy sequel to Star Fox 1, and a must try for those who have played Star Fox 64, if not, both.

Story: 4 - A little more story than the last at least, this time you don’t need a manual though.

The story only has as a little more to offer than predecessor, dialogue and ending. To put it short and simple, Andross is seeking revenge on the Cornernia and wages war on the Lylat System once again, while in the process conquering planets as well to use against his enemy. General Pepper calls upon Star Fox (Fox, Falco, Slippy, and Peppy) to save the Lylat System once again, this time, with two new female members in the team (Miyu, and Fay). However, Andross also hired Star Wolf to destroy team Star Fox in the midst of their mission. With new foes, Star Fox must overcome their rivals, free planets conquered by Andross, and defeat the evil overlord once and for all (too bad he’s back again in 64).

Gameplay: 8 - I think it could have sold

Just to explain the game really quickly, you must use the map to navigate the Star Fox team to initiate combat or missions with planets, enemies and missiles, and battleships. In the battles, you must defeat all enemies in space, and on planets and spaceships, destroy the boss at the end of the stage. Both of these must be done as fast as possible since the tactical map system works in real time. Every second wasted is every second a battleship or missile comes closer to hitting Corneria.

So just to inform you, the game play really is revolutionary considering it was used as a basis for Star Fox 64, however…it did have its mistakes and annoyances which luckily Star Fox 64 perfected! Let’s start with the good things shall we? The first thing you’ll notice is that, you get to CHOOSE TWO characters. There are three different play styles out of the 6 characters. Fox & Falco are all around with 8 health tanks, moderate speed, a medium sized charge shot bar, and nova bombs as a special item (classic style). Slippy/Peppy play defensively with 10 health tanks, slow speed, a large sized charge shot bar, and the repair item which heals their health tanks. Fay & Miyu play more offensively and are more suitable for speed runners and experts with 6 health tanks, high speed, a small charge shot bar, shield item, and twin blasters. This system was never really implemented in Star Fox 64; however, a stat system was used in Star Fox Assault for multiplayer mode. I feel having a choice in play style really makes the game a lot more fun, but it makes sense why it was never included in it’s successor considering that all range mode wasn’t used as a means to get from point A to point B. Having higher speed or a faster charge shots wouldn’t alter too much unless they actually made a few tweaks here and there to implement the need for it like Star Fox 2 did. Regardless, choosing characters with different play styles, not to mention, being able to switch between them before going into battle really makes the game a lot more of a blast.

The Second thing that makes the game play fun is what also made Star Fox 64 popular. With all-range mode, the charge shot system, space and planet battles, and rising difficulty with each mission completed; Star Fox 64 veterans will feel right at home. Of course, it is nowhere as perfect and has its faults, but you have to give Nintendo credit for the fact that the engine was similar in a few ways with a mix of the old SNES Star Fox. Either way, all these new yet old ideas really keep the game interesting to the player and pushes the player to beat the game from beginning to end in one go. Depending on the difficulty you choose will really gauge how far the challenges can peak. I in my own experience decided to jump from beginner to expert, and boy, was I in for a ride. The Expert mode provides a lot of challenge with stronger enemies from the start, and many IBPMs to prevent crashing into Corneria all at once. The game will literally test how fast you can go, not just to beat it through, but to complete every mission as fast as possible as to not allow enemies to get close enough to Corneria. The game isn’t much harder than Star Fox 64 on the expert path. If you think this balanced difficulty isn’t challenging enough, play “Ninja Gaiden”, there’s practically no “I just made its” in that game.

The last possible explanation I can give to why the game play is good is that it IS Star Fox 2. Its an unreleased SNES game that was never released, not to mention, could have possibly been a hit and lead to more successful titles with Star Fox’s future. Unforunately, that wasn’t the case, but at least we get to play the game. Star Fox 2 really has a special charm in just being what it is. You have the Arwing and the Walker mode. That is the one thing that really stands out about Star Fox 2 aside from its stepping stones to the 64 era. It really changed the game play style in a good way almost. The similarity it has to Star Fox 1 and how it upgraded with better polygon models and frame rate just made it so enjoyable and nostalgic. To me, it feels like having your favorite food at your favorite place, but somehow just better because someone else put a little twist to it that made it good. If I had to put it another way, it was like “Super Mario Bros 3.” and “Super Mario World.” Both are great games, but they have a few differences that make one better than the other in some strange way.

Games come with their flaws or annoyances, and this fox has 2…Well, 3, but the third issue isn’t really that bad. The two main problems are, the camera, and the Arwing on planets or bases. The camera can really screw you over sometimes in both space and ground…and this only applies to the Arwing. First, in space, the one biggest issue that will always get the best of you is just the perception. The perception somehow makes it tough for you to find an enemy who might have flown behind, above, or below you. When you try to turn, sometimes, they might be there, but other times, they may be above where they disappear in some strange way, or just can’t be reached at all, and if they are below, it’s almost the same but you have more luck actually attacking them. Because this happens, it makes it easier for enemies to escape and result in an “Out of Range” Failure, allowing the enemies freebies at attacking Corneria. This can be very frustrating at times, especially on expert mode when you already have 10 other missions to deal with that involve stopping more missiles, freeing planets, destroying battle ships, fighting Star Wolf, and hoping to god a probe isn’t sent out at that time to take over your satellite cannon which you must heavily rely on when you can.

When dealing with the Arwing on Planets, some ships, or bases, the game pretty much tries to force you to use walker mode for most grounded situations unless there is literally a one path room, or an easy route from point A to point B. This causes the Arwing to become an option only meant to speed across an area in a short amount of time, or when it is actually necessary with certain obstacles. Sometimes, you’ll find yourself changing back and forth constantly in certain rooms found in enemy bases, kind of like paradigm shifting every turn in Final Fantasy XIII. It really starts to get tedious after a few times. What’s worse is, if you DO try to use the Arwing when you shouldn’t, it’s almost as if the game wants you to have the worst time of your life. The camera is terrible in grounded situations when you are in the Arwing since there is no way to shift the camera with the L and R buttons since that is meant for tighter turns and barrel rolls. Not to mention, even if you tried to turn left and right, the camera takes a lot of time before it really is in a straight path thus making you crash into walls that you can’t see! Sometimes, you’ll be flying down an Arwing required path and just because of one teeny little turn mistake you made, you practically have no time to save yourself before crashing into a wall and sustaining more than one hit bringing you closer to death as Miyu and Fay especially. This game doesn’t joke around; your mistakes can really be a detriment to anything after. If you want to get inside a base and you have to go from the front to the back, don’t be lazy and just try to fly the Arwing around it, you will hit a wall or completely miss your target. Just fly past it to the front, change into walker, and run on in, or change back and fly in.

The other issue that is not as big in the game is it’s choices in where difficulty should be implemented. Even on expert, you might say, this is too hard…wait no, this is simple…wait…WHAT THE!? Basically, to put it short, bosses tend to be really easy in this game, if the base and energy core bosses actually count as bosses. However, outside of that, on the map screen when dealing with the tactical active map screen, on expert mode, Andross will literally take over every planet, send out 5 IBPMs all at the same time, send out 3 battle ships, and you are supposed to deal with them all at together wasting as little time as possible on all of them. The game almost puts you in an endless loop, I kid you not. It almost seems as if it is necessary for Corneria to take a little damage so you can do what you must. Freeing planets is an absolute necessity in the game, because if you don’t, you have to keep dealing with the annoying IBPMs they keep sending out, however, you have no choice but to deal with the IBPMs already on the map, along with the battle ships which are twice as lethal but at least take longer to get to Corneria, but by the time you deal with the IBPMs and maybe one ship if you didn’t waste too much time, there are already another group of IBPMs headed towards Corneria from the planets, or as a gift from Andross himself with an extra helping of battle ships! Yes, Andross will add to the amount of challenges you need to complete while mocking you. This isn’t bad though, it just makes the game a lot more challenging, but without a save function, who knows how long you’ll be trying to find the best way to deal with a planet without letting Corneria take any damage.

Difficulty: 7 - Refer to the issues of the gameplay section above

The controls are simple to grasp depending on what configuration you decide to use, but the more enjoyable higher difficulties of Star Fox 2…are very challenging. The controls are simple in the Arwing mode, you have your shoot button, special item, L and R for barrel rolling, up is down and down is up (might be possible to change), a brake button, and a boost button. In addition, you can switch out of cockpit mode in space by pressing select if I am correct. Select on planets allows you to go into walker mode which only has a few changes. You can move around in 8-directions with the d-pad, L and R turn you left and right, and you can jump with B most likely. What is difficult is as I mentioned in the last part of the gameplay section, as well as the few issues there are with the camera. Planning strategy and the amount of enemies to deal with can possibly become your worst nightmare if you can’t figure out how to complete missions fast enough. However, this is only on the harder difficulties.

Graphics: 9 - WOW!

For a Star Fox sequel, I must say…Nintendo did well with updating not just polygon models, but the movements, frame rate, and everything. From what I could tell, the enemies not only look better and are well animated, but just how smooth they move around is another factor. There are a few new animations here and there like the fiery laser eyes that Andross uses, or the long laser that the Mirage Dragon uses. It’s really nice to see that it was possible to add more to the game, but then again, it would have happened regardless considering smaller beams becoming generic and boring after too much use. The frame rate is also something worth noting. I remember when playing Star Fox, there would be a lot of lag when there were only a few things on the screen. Star Fox 2 can certainly handle a lot more objects at once, but, not all the time. It is still improved regardless and makes the game more presentable and nice. The fact that the polygons don’t stray too far from the original Star Fox allows for that nostalgic love that makes you feel warm and comfy. There’s nothing like that good old red and yellow glowing effect for weaknesses or openings…or the puffy exploding effect…or the way the big battleship dies. These are things that were in the previous Star Fox and just made the game what it is pretty much. (I think even Star Fox 64 reused the glow weakness, however in the form of yellow and white glowing effect) The game also uses texture mapping (similar to Doom) noticeably which is another plus to the graphics.

Sound: 7 - This time…the music falls a little short of the 1st game, sounds, the same if it isn’t for something new.

So, some of the music in my opinion is not as strong as Star Fox 1. The main problem, or no, what I mean by not as strong is…I can only remember a few of the planet stage themes. I’d probably appreciate the songs listening to those alone…but even so, they aren’t as strong as the songs previously made for the last game. It just doesn’t have that nice impact to match the environment almost, or maybe it’s more, the songs are a little bit generic or just don’t seem that catchy. From Star Fox 1, I remember most of the songs because they were really catchy and all of them somehow made an impact on me…like guile’s theme. I like the main Star Fox 2 theme that is used in the title and character select screen, but…even that song doesn’t go above my love for the first game. It’s good, but not exceedingly good. However, the way it is composed in the intro does have a little bit of that strong feel to it. I remember someone told me once that, sometimes the music really represents the game and how much work might have been put into it, or how much love the game had from its creators. The music in Star Fox 2 really represents itself…it was never given a chance to perform even when it was complete. But that is just me because video game music really speaks to me in a language I might only understand. (hint hint to a fighting game that is overly broken with infinite combos.)

The sound effects on the other hand are pretty much recycled from Star Fox, maybe with just a small pitch change so there is a miniscule difference to the ears. However, I never really paid attention much since I mostly heard the sound of mean shooting beams at the speed of a turbo function. What I can say is, the charge beam sound is pretty cool and the shot sound for it has some similarity of sorts to Star Fox 64.

Depth & Addictiveness: 6 - It's still a good game

Star Fox 2 only goes in as far as you choose higher difficulties. Choose normal, you only get to see 2-3 planets, fend off a few IBPMS and Battleships, fight only 3 members of Star Wolf, Mirage Dragon, and Boss. This would only take around 30 minutes at most according to my let’s play of Star Fox 2. On the other hand, on Expert which I still am completing, I’m calculating that for me having put myself into a horrible situation I was not ready for…I’d guess about an hour, if not, a little more, and for experts, around 50 minutes. This includes constantly fighting plenty of unique IBPMS, more than 5 battleships possibly, having to deal with probes that take over your satellite cannon, enemies escaping battles or me taking longer to complete missions, having to free all planets from Andross’s control, fighting all four member of Star Wolf, Mirage Dragon, and Andross not just with a mask but hands too (You get to even see his face). This game does indeed have a bit of depth to it, along with having to get a 3 star rank if you can pull that off on Expert. I thought I did well on beginner and I got a 2-star rank…probably a hint that I shouldn’t have skipped hard mode.

Am I addicted to it? Not really. But I did indeed comeback to play it after beating it twice before. When I first played Star Fox 2, I have to admit; I was addicted to its classic yet new style (kind of like new super Mario bros). However, after playing and beating it for a week, I stopped for awhile before coming back to it a few months later. Now I’m playing it again, probably 2-3 years from when I first played it, and I find it just as fun as when I first played it. But, after I finish this let’s play of it…it’ll be awhile before I play it again. The game will make you want to play Star Fox 1 and Star Fox 64 just to compare Star Fox 2 to it though. Even if it isn’t THAT addicting, it’s still really fun to come back to and doesn’t take away from its fun factor at all honestly.

 wubbykeith: I don't know how the glitch triggers. I had it change on me mid-combat in a base, was playing Miyu and Fay, and Miyu suddenly turned into Fox for no reason (and I never carry Nova Bombs).

 Play two characters with the same type of ship. At Andross battle, your ship will suddenly change! try to pick up items you didn't start with.
