Spooky's House of Jumpscares Review by: zanderlex - 8.8/10

Too Spooky For You
Spooky's House of Jumpscares is an amazing game, though I didn't really think so when I first saw it many months ago. Half a year ago I saw Markiplier playing it and it looked pretty decent so I decided to watch his videos and they started off pretty slow but it soon became really awesome. After doing a few episodes he had to stop because it was just a demo but he recently finished the series and I loved every second of it to the point where I wanted to play it for myself but I couldn't really find out where to play it. The day after Mark finished the series I discovered that the game had been put up on Steam that week and I had immediately downloaded it so I could try it out myself. I was really surprised that the game was free because even though it was pretty low on the graphics side, everything else was top notch but since it was free there was nothing stopping me from getting it. I fooled around with it for a bit and I soon realized that actually playing the game was just as fun as what I had seen in the videos, if not better.

Sure, there are many aspects of the game that some people would say would either make it a bad game or would make it not as good as it could be in terms of horror games, but they are all wrong. The game starts off at a very bad pace but it soon becomes one of the most intense games that you can play. As a matter of fact, this is actually the first horror game that I have ever played, ever. For me I feel that when it comes to horror games, I could just watch the videos of them and be content and that I wouldn't really get that much out of actually playing the game, but this one was different and I knew that I had to actually play it for myself.

GRAPHICS 6/10

The graphics were never meant to play a huge role in the game, they don't look as good as they can be, but for the most part the graphics are actually what you are paying attention to the least in this game. The graphics aren't really great in terms of quality but they still get the job done and look pretty cool. Every room has it's own design or color scheme and as you are running through each room, it's really nice but also really suspenseful to see the changes as you run past them. The color is pretty basic as well but looks good and some of the animations that are used look pretty decent as well. Basically the graphics look good but could have had some work done on them, but if you are really concerned about how good the graphics are and not anything else, then this isn't the kind of game that you would be interested in. For an overall grade, graphics is going to get a 6 out of 10.

SOUND 10/10

The sounds of the game are really well made and in my opinion are the best aspect of the game. The sounds are great for a variety of reasons and one of them would be the music. The music fits in with the game really nicely especially as you get deeper into the game because it gives you a sense if dread and takes out all of the cuteness and silliness out of the game and replaces it with the horror. If it hadn't been for the music, the game would have been pretty bland but it's the music and the other sounds that make the game what it is. When it comes to most indie games, there's usually just a few songs and sounds and they normally stay constant with each other, but when it comes to this game, everything gets shaken up a bit. You're never going to hear the same song for more than a little while because their goal is to always keep you on the edge. The same goes for the regular sounds, which work the same way as the music and are just as good. As a matter of fact, the regular sounds are much scarier than the music and leave a much bigger impression because, you know, jumpscares and all. Many of the jumpscares and most of them will catch you off guard while every now and then one will terrify you. There's sounds in many other places as well, various rooms and events might have their own unique sound while some of the monsters that you fave will have their own as well which can lead to a few creepy moments. Oh, and Spooky has a voice too, so that's a plus. Overall, the sounds are as good as they can be and for a grade, this aspect is going to get a perfect 10 out of 10.

ADDICTIVENESS 9/10

Why wouldn't this game be a lot of fun? Well, sure it starts off really slow and has you running through rooms that have literally nothing in them and maybe every dozen or so rooms you will have a little jumpscare by having a cardboard cutout of a ghost or something pop out of the wall. That seems kind of lame right? But as you play longer, the game becomes much more interesting because the horror factor increases big time to the point where you're always on the edge of your seat and isn't that loads of fun? It's really worth it because once you get maybe past the half way point of the game you are fully immersed in the intensity of the game to the point where you won't want to quit playing because you are having so much fun trying to survive and make it to the end. On top of that, this isn't the kind of game that will throw the same thing over and over at you like most games. Sure, the rooms will repeat many times, but every now and then something drastic that you were not expecting at all will catch you and terrify you and once you get to the point where you feel that you understand the game a bit and what's going on, you're thrown into the dark again and have no idea what's going on anymore and then the thrills only continue and get bigger from there on. This is the kind of game that's a lot of fun and the kind that you will want to see through to the end no matter how long it is. If a game can hook you in to the point where you don't want to stop playing until you beat it, then it's doing its job and it's addicting and for a grade, this game is going to get a 9 out of 10.

STORY 8/10

This game is one of those games where you have one main story with tons of little stories thrown around it as a way to throw you off and it does a great job with that. The main story of the game is basically a challenge for you to go through Spooky's House that has 1000 rooms in it but throughout the game you find all these letters lying around that talk of all sorts of other things going on around the house as well as the creatures that live in there. The various side stories range from a crazy fast food place where apparently people are the main ingredient to a mansion with a crazed murderer roaming around to many other little pieces scattered around the house. If you were to look at every individual piece that falls under your main journey on its own, then it wouldn't really mean too much, but when you look at everything that's going on in one picture and start to connect everything together, you begin to get a better understanding of what's going on as well as your place in the story. Each piece on it's own isn't much, but together the game puts together a pretty great story and for a grade, it's going to get an 8 out of 10.

DEPTH 8/10

Just the fact that there are 1,000 rooms should mean that the game has a lot of depth, and that's exactly the case. Even if you manage to get through the entire game without dying even once and you do everything that you need to as fast as you can, it's still going to take you at least a couple of hours to beat the game because it's really long. Sure, some of the rooms are really small and barely even take 5 seconds to beat, but a thousand is a lot and some of the rooms are actually quite big. In addition to the amount of rooms, you have the story rooms like the fast food room and the mansion. These rooms are a cluster of many rooms that usually have a bunch of events, creatures, and things to accomplish before you can pass it, and the best part is that these rooms and all the rooms within them only count as one room so you only get more to play through. There's even a few rooms where you get arcade style mini games for you to play when you get tired of running around and that's a nice addition to the game and adds a little more to what the game can offer. Overall, the game has a really good amount of depth, enough to last a few hours and for a grade, this aspect is going to get an 8 out of 10.

DIFFICULTY 4

For the most part, you're just going to be running through empty harmless rooms which will take up about 700 of the rooms and when it comes to these, you have nothing to worry about. Then there will be a couple of rooms where there's some sort of a creature that is chasing after you. These are pretty easy as well and all you need to do is run as fast as you can towards the next room, make sure you never run out of sprint, and never look back. Then you are going to have the giant puzzle rooms where you either need to think, jump, run even faster, slice something with an axe, or just do other stuff. You won't even really need an explanation as to what you need to do, it should be pretty easy to figure out so there aren't really any problems here. The worst that can happen is that you die and you need to start back from the save point which is usually every 100 rooms and is easy to make back up. If that happens, all you need to do is try again and do things a bit differently and you will succeed. Overall, the game is pretty easy and my grade for difficulty is going to be a 4.

OVERALL 8.8/10

Like I had said before, the game starts off pretty slow but if you stick around long enough, it's going to soon become a lot of fun and I really recommend it if you are a fan of good horror games. This is one of the best horror games that I have ever seen and if you give it a shot and play it enough, I'm sure that most of you will agree with me. To top it all off, the game is free, it's not like such a good game that's this long AND happens to be free comes along all the time. I love this game and my overall grade for it is going to be an 8.8 out of 10.
