Return of the Sinister Rainbow
How can you screw up Spider-Man? Web-slinging and wall-crawling are some of the best game mechanics I've seen in quite a while, so how do you screw them up? Until I saw that this game was published by LJN, that's the question I was asking, and that was all I needed to know. I can't think of a single good Spider-Man game on older consoles or handheld systems, and this one's no exception to the rule of crap. Does this game have any redeeming qualities to speak of, or is it a complete pumpkin bomb from beginning to end?

The graphics aren't much to speak of. They're fairly bare, very dull, and don't seem to know how to pick a consistent style. How can you take anything seriously when the game tries to use a dark, gritty style while Spider-Man jumps around like an idiot making people explode into little chunks with his bare hands? The style also oddly changes depending on what level you're on, from dark and gritty to brighter and more colorful at the drop of a hat. It feels like every area was designed by completely different people with no consistent style, and it makes the game look like a mess.

The music is a bit of a droning mess. It feels very slow and very depressing in tone, which is completely unfitting for a Spider-Man game on the NES. Is Spider-Man known for being dark and gritty and depressing? Didn't think so. It's also extremely repetitive, which makes things even worse when you have to listen to it while you're stuck in a pit trying to jump out! The sound effects, on the other hand, are thoroughly generic and uninspired, to the point where they're really not worth talking about. This game does not put any effort into its presentation, I can tell you that much.

The storyline is pretty basic, even for a Spider-Man game - basically, the Sinister Six need to be stopped. That's all. What are they even doing that needs to be stopped? Are we just going and beating them up for no reason? When a game's story is as bare as this one, these are the kind of questions I end up asking! The only way it could be more generic is if Mary Jane was kidnapped as well.

The gameplay is really where this game falls apart. It's a standard sidescroller, although some levels scroll vertically, and your only goal is to make it to the end and beat the tar out of the boss. As far as I can tell, there isn't a single objective other than getting to the end of the level and occasionally finding an item or two. You'd think they would spice things up with some kind of objective like "rescue the hostages" or something like that, but I guess that would've taken too much effort.

The worst part about this game is easily the controls. They're incredibly stiff and awkward, which just makes the game even more of a chore to play than it already was. Even though you have two attacks to choose from, they're both mapped to the A button, which means you have to quickly tap the A button twice to kick and hold A to punch. Jumping is somehow even more awkward than the attacking, since you can only move in the direction you're facing while in mid-air and the game will defy the laws of physics and stop you in mid-air as soon as you start falling, meaning that you have to aim your jumps precisely.

It gets worse when you try to use the webbing. Pushing A lets you shoot web projectiles if you have any...only problem is, there's no way to switch them off, which means you'll probably end up wasting them all before you get to a point where you actually need them. Actually swinging with the web makes you hold B and push A in mid-air, which just makes things even more awkward, and it gets worse from there. If you want to attack in mid-air without using projectiles, you have to hold B and push A to swing, push B to stop swinging, and then push A in mid-air with precise timing to kick! How do they expect you to hit anything with such an awkward attack?

Fighting in this game is just as hard as you'd expect, but for all the wrong reasons. Punching has a very short range and the kick is prone to flying right through enemies and missing completely, so your only decent option is projectiles that run out very quickly. The game starts off very slow, with enemies that take several hits to make any noticeable difference in your life gauge, but it quickly starts throwing difficult enemies that can drain your entire life bar in a few hits while taking multiple hits to defeat.

When you're taking that much damage, how do you restore your life? Almost every other sidescroller has health power-ups that you can pick up to restore some health, but this game makes you kill enemies instead to get your health back at a very slow pace. You have to kill several enemies to make any noticeable difference in your life bar, and you're likely to take more hits and lose even more health while you're doing it! Oh, and let's not forget that you only have one life and one continue to beat the entire game with! Instead of actually making a compelling game, they just decided to go the cheap route and make enemies that kill you almost instantaneously while only giving you one continue to work with.

After you finish one of the extremely bland and uninspired levels, you'll have to fight one of the Sinister Six, and they're all very annoying to fight against. The first boss you fight is one of the longest simply because he spends most of the battle flying around just out of your reach while chucking lightning bolts that have no chance of hitting you. What's the point of making you wait for the boss to come down to your level so you can hit him? The rest of the bosses aren't that great either, since most of them can either teleport or fly to keep you from beating on them while they beat you down.

This is a good example of someone taking an idea with great potential and ruining it because they don't know what to do with it. There have been quite a few great Spider-Man games both in the past and in the present, but this is a good example of how NOT to make a Spider-Man game. Just about everything that can go wrong with a sidescroller is present in this game. I would avoid this one at all costs.

Pros:
+Web-swinging and wall-climbing are interesting mechanics

Cons:
-Web-swinging has horrible controls and wall-climbing is barely ever used
-Controls are horrendous in every possible aspect
-Graphics are far too dark and don't keep a consistent style
-Music and sound is repetitive and doesn't fit the tone of a Spider-Man game
-Game is far too difficult for all the wrong reasons

Spider-Man - Return of the Sinister Six Game Description

From the ingame intro:"Doctor Octopus is plotting the crowning caper of his criminal career... to rule the world.
He has reunited the Sinister Six and with these super-villains together again, nothing stands in their way - except Spider-Man!"Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six is a side-scrolling game which puts you in the role of Spidey throughout six levels against Electro, Sandman, Mysterio, Vulture, Hobgoblin and Doctor Octopus respectively. Some puzzle solving (like finding a key) is necessary to beat some levels. Spidey can duck jump, climb walls, punch, shoot webs to swing (by pressing punch and jump together) and perform a jump kick (by pressing the punch button twice). Collecting web cartridges allows Spidey to shoot limited web projectiles.Although hard to die, Spidey has only one life, there are no items to recharge life (but killing some guys will do so) and only one continue.
