Sonic the Hedgehog 1 at SAGE 2010 Game Description

Sonic the Hedgehog 1 @ SAGE 2010 is a hack by Cinossu of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It is designed with scoring and time attack in mind, and is the first ROM hack to implement Retro Channel and SonMP3. It was released at the 2010 Sonic Amateur Games Expo (SAGE), hence its name.

The basic idea of this ROM hack is to take a basic Sonic 1 and make it record all of your results for comparison and competition. Every Zone Act and Special Stage is individually selectable for play, allowing you to record your results in Score, Time and Rings, with the addition of Monitors, Badniks and Hits for Zone Acts only.

In addition to this, there are two extra Challenges. They are the Full Game Playthrough challenge, and the Boss Attack challenge. Full Game Playthrough starts you at Green Hill Zone Act 1, and makes you play through the whole game from start to finish. Boss Attack takes you to a specific level designed to make you play through all 6 bosses of the game, one after the other.

As well as these, there are 50 Achievements to get as well, some being easy to achieve and others more difficult.

To tie everything together is the first use of Retro Channel, allowing you to upload your results and achievements and compare them with other Sonic Retro users, producing leaderboards for each individual result per Zone Act/Special Stage/Challenge.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1 at SAGE 2010 Review by: Mohammedroxx3 - 9.5/10

A great and self-competitive game. (Addictive warning!!!)
Well, hello everyone! It's me again and surprisingly I'm actually going to make another review! I'm very happy that I'm beginning to make more reviews often now. Even though the site is under maintenance, I will back up my review in word pad just in case to stay on the safe side. Wouldn't want all of my effort to go away so anyways, lets get STARTED!!! :D

So, whats special about this hack?

This hack of Sonic the hedgehog is mostly based on improving your skills in finishing each zone. Like you finish a level faster, kill more badniks, collect more rings, higher score... etc. So when you start this hack, you will be in a menu. Well, not one of those normal and boring menus. You are Sonic and you simply choose the option by jumping on a button and then jumping in to the ring that pops up. In this menu it lets you choose between all the zones and acts to play, and even special stages. And all the zones and special stages are exactly like the original Sonic the hedgehog. And in the top right corner, there are more advanced stats of how you are doing in the level. Also when you go to the left, you can choose to play the whole game as if your in the original Sonic the hedgehog or play boss attack were you fight each and every one of Dr. Eggman's inventions in order depending on the zones. (Green hill zone boss to final zone boss.) Also whenever you finish a zone, it will tell you how you have done. (With your score, amount of badniks killed, how long it took you to finish the zone... etc.). And it will tell you if you have beaten your highest score. A very good way to train and improve yourself in certain zones that you may have trouble in. *cough* labyrinth zone.
Also have I forgot to mention the retro channel option? It's a very cool option were you are able to connect this hack in to the online database of scores and things like that. I'm not sure but I think you can upload your scores online with it and compare it with others. That is amazing if you ask me. A game for the good old sega genesis? And something that allows it to connect online? Awesome! But too bad it's not compatible with vizzed though. You have to use a certain emulator for it but oh well. It doesn't really matter.
Also if you use save states and then load it, there is a little secret that I want you to find out yourselves. Some thing similar that happens to when you lock on Sonic and Knuckles to a random game. That will teach you guys not to cheat with save states! :P And thats basically it for this part of my review.

Now lets talk about the rest of the details in this game!

Graphics: 9

Well, there is not that much that has been changed here. Sonic and all the zones are pretty much the same. However there are a few things here that has such great graphics. The first thing is how the main menu looks like. It's all dark and the ground and background has these glowy lines going through them vertically and horizontally as if it's dark graph paper. I just don't know how to describe it. It looks professionally made. As if it's one of those cool looking areas at certain shows and games were you would train yourself. Just don't know how to say it but it looks great for sega genesis graphics! Also the huge rings that you jump in are all in different colors which makes things look better. Well, at least better than having all of them in the same color. Also in the boss attack mode, the place looks like the same thing like the menu except that the lines would blink and glow in certain area which looks really epic. Other than that, the rest is pretty much the same just like the original Sonic the hedgehog, so thats all for the graphics.

Sound: 9

Nothing much changed here either. The only thing is that the menu has a different and cool background music and the boss attack mode has a very epic sound track! Also the intro and stuff were changed too. But I got to say these sound they have put in the intro was pretty good. But the intro was a little long but you can simply skip it by pressing enter. All the other sound effects of Sonic jumping, rolling, jumping in to a huge ring, collecting rings, and all the other background music in the rest of the zones are the same exact thing just like the original Sonic the hedgehog. Also I have seen a lot of people saying that they loved the background music of the menu. They really seemed to like it somehow. I mean, it's not bad but... well, I guess it's still alright. Makes you feel a little jumpy and also feels like a normal life cycle, but yet, a happy life cycle. Well, pretty much nothing else for me to say here.

Addictiveness: 10

The addictiveness of this game would definitely deserve a very high rating. Actually the highest possible rating you can give! You just always want to master this game and keep improving on your high score. You just always get this feeling in your head saying, "Ehh... I must, beat my high score! Must beat it again. And again!..." Yup, and so on. If your the type of person who always love to improve and beat their high score, then this hack would definitely be right for you! You would always be like, "I must finish this zone faster, I must kill more badniks, I must get a higher score, I must get better results!" But I warn you, it can be too addicting and time consuming. You might never ever want to stop trying to beat your high score. And if only the retro channel works, then I wonder how much more addicting this game can be! Yup, one of the most addicting Sonic hacks I have ever seen so far. Not sure if anything else can beat it in addiction yet. Thats pretty much it for the addictiveness of this hack.

Story: Uhh... None I guess.

Well, there isn't really any story in this game. It's pretty much focused on improving your results in beating the original zones of Sonic the hedgehog. Even though you can fight bosses in this game, I'm still not sure if this game has any story. Nothing else to say here.

Depth: 10

This is that part were this hack really gets the high ratings. This hack offers a lot of cool things. Like after you finish a zone, the game tells you your score and if you have beaten your highest score for this zone (obviously), how long it took you to finish the zone and if you have beaten your best time for this zone, how much rings you got and if you have beaten your highest amount of rings you ever got in this zone, how much monitors you have broken in this zone, how much badniks you have destroyed in this zone and if you beaten your highest amount of badniks you killed, and how much hits you have gotten. Yup, thats actually a lot of advanced stats for a zone here. This is pretty much fit for these type of people who would want to know each and every detail of how they have done in this game and if each detailed was improved. Well, sort of creepy and weird but who knows. There might be people who actually care that much in how they have done. Also there is the retro channel, boss attack, and the menu to select the zone that I have already mentioned earlier in this review. So there is nothing else for me to say here. :P

Difficulty: 6

Well, it mostly depends on the zone you choose to play. Like green hill zone could be a walk in the park while labyrinth zone is like... Um... a very hard zone. Usually goes like every other game depending on the order of the levels. Goes from easy to hard. Except labyrinth zone is a lot harder than star light zone in my opinion. Or is it just me? :P Yup, well, nothing else to say here. Depends on the zone you choose to play.

Gameplay: 8

Same exact thing just like the original Sonic the hedgehog. No spin dash, no special signature moves, no homing attack, no double attack... etc. But it plays fair! Sonic doesn't have any move that can make you cheat in finishing up a zone better. It was meant like that. It must be the same exact game play like the original! It would be a little pointless for Sonic to have any special move since this game was dedicated for having better results in finishing a zone. Problem with that? lol, yup, thats it for gameplay.

OVERALL: 9.5

A very great game! Almost flawless! This is just one heck of a professionally made game! What are you waiting for? Start playing this game! I hope you enjoyed reading this review! Thanks for reading and I wish you all an awesome day! :D
