EVERYONE IS SUPER SONIC RACING   becerra95
Context: I was like 7 years old when the sega Saturn arrived in the household. That’s twenty years ago so 2002 when it’s been past dead. Seeing games like virtua cop, virtua fighter 2, sonic 3-D blast I was in awe. There was one specific game that got me hooked for a while due to being a fan of it greatly. I had fond memories of it even today when I’m able to play it on the GameCube. This disc I’m talking about it is a mixed bag of a racing game. I present to you… Daytona U- kidding Sonic R! An under appreciated game with a weird premise and weirder music. (I am sorry Daytona but I never played you that much when I owned you)
Graphics: 10
Jk- 7
The graphics were laughable. Tails the doll? Sonic looking so jagged? Amy what?!?!? Again tails the doll.. bruh why? Sega Saturn made it into a nightmare fuel of torment. The areas were so uninspired, weird and just… so obscure. The transparency was nonexistent in sega Saturn so they had to do what they can to give off a sense of transparency to the shields and such and boy on modern tv’s are ugly. Knuckles… in all every character looks so jagged and pixelated. The balloons don’t even look like balloons. The draw distance is atrocious and the scenery is all funky with fences being 2D pretending to be 3D and other objects and obstacles giving us that fake 3D look and it’s so awesome. The only good thing are the emeralds that actually look like gems, and the letter R when you start the game, like that’s something the Sega Saturn shouldn’t be able to do but they pulled it off… I love every bit of it. Bravo nightmare fuel bravo

This game is so addicting that it got me hooked and went to rehab to fix my issue. In all seriousness this is a game for the die hards and people who like the obscure. This might put people off for the wackiness this game is and how it’s not part of the main sonic series.
Sound: 10
Actually: 8
The music is funky, weird and so out of place for a sonic game. It’s so great and awesome. Like “can’t you feel the sunshine” or “Living in the City” are favorites of mine and honestly I don’t think there’s any other Saturn game that can be compared to the gem these music are. Super Sonic Racing, Work it Out, Menu Music? Count me in!
Sound effects and bgm are average, sometimes overlapping one another and other times feeling kinda muffled (cannonball in the submarine) but honestly this is what gives Sonic R its charms. The sheer weirdness and a “what in the world?” feeling, this makes the game a must have. Other than mixed reviews from people saying it’s either great or bad.
Story: 5
Actually: 5
It’s the same sonic trope with some differences. Collecting Chaos emeralds and making sure Dr. Eggman doesn’t grab them. Beating his henchmen and foiling his evil plans, this time in a Grand Prix-esque format!
Depth: 10
Actually: 7
You have a choice of characters from Sonic, Tails, knuckles, Amy and Eggman. Secret characters involves, Metal Sonic, Tails Doll, Mecha Knuckles, Eggbot, and Super Sonic.
sonic : fastest of the bunch but with his turns hard to pull off. He can double jump to higher elevations
Tails: he’s able to accelerate faster than most characters and be able to fly. Not a player to sleep on and is pretty good on certain stages
Knuckles : corners so well but lacks speed and acceleration. Clearly Sonic’s rival and his specialty is gliding. He’s basically a Jack of all trades character
Amy: last unlockable character, she drives a car and is the worst character in the game. Her only resource is she can drive over water
Eggman: the genius himself. He’s slightly faster than most characters and he can turn pretty well, though he can’t accelerate well. He can shoot a cannon and can hover over water
Metal sonic: has the best jump and is almost as fast as sonic. His acceleration and turning sucks
Doll tails: almost as fast as metal sonic and can’t jump for shiz but can hover through water and be able to turn well
Mecha knuckles: one of the best characters in the game. Even with poor turning he has great speed and acceleration and be able to glide through the levels.
Robo Eggman: almost as bad as Amy and one of the worst characters in the game. He is bad at everything except shooting a bullet to enemies.
Super sonic: the best of the best. He has perfect stats among the rest and be able to compete everything with ease. A cheat code to say the least
With game modes there are Grand Prix, multiplayer and time attack.
With Grand Prix you race to get the chaos emeralds and collect “sonic coins” to race against Eggman’s henchmen. Winning them gets you the opportunity to play as the robots and winning the chaos emeralds while first place grants you one step closer to the final stage. The stages consist of
Resort island: a tropical track with water surrounding the track with a few shortcuts to help side with your victory
Radical City: a city-esque track with a maze like bottom floor and body of water that will slow you down if you fall into it! Many secret areas and shortcuts that’ll help you if in a pickle. The fun part are the bumpers and pinball looking area.
Regal Ruin: a ancient Egyptian looking track with a few loops and secrets that won’t help that much but be able to grab what you need. The setting is quite decent to say the least
Reactive Factory: WORK IT OUT WORK IT OUT! A sea port track with a submarine and many secrets that’ll help or hinder your victory.
Radiant Emerald: a “transparent” track that is in space that is made out of crystals and all. Actually an astonishing achievement to make the track look so transparent with the Saturn’s lack of hardware for that. Collect all seven emeralds and something special will happen to the stage.
There’s also some side modes for you to enjoy whether alone or multiplayer.
Balloon: pop balloons and get the shortest time.
Time attack: run through laps of the tracks to get the record score and improve with your skills.
Tag: a basic game of tag between you and the AI or players and you must touch them all in order to win.
Difficulty: 1
Actually: 7
Game is difficult to begin with not knowing how to handle each character but after a while you get used to it. Each character gives a difference in difficulty and stages can either be your friend or enemy. It’s a game that you must adapt to play well, especially on the Saturn
Overall: even with the mediocre scores this game has charm. This game has tude, this game has everything that yells “Sega” in the 90s. One of the most obscure games Sega has made, it’s a surprise it led to a legacy of racing games from sonic riders and Sega all star racing. This was just the beginning of Sonic racing and without it who knows? Though if I tell you the truth this game is a gem just for the soundtrack. So wacky and so absurd, this doesn’t even belong in a racing game yet there it is… and it’s awesome.

I have actually completed this game and enjoyed it   Doomstruck
Sonic R is a game that gets a bad rap, and rarely for the right reasons. It's definitely a flawed game, it's not the smoothest play, but there's plenty of charm and fun to be had here, especially if you're a diehard fan of this era of Sonic's aesthetics. When you hear most people complain about this game, let's be honest, they probably haven't played it and are just repeating whatever Jontron said about it, which was largely just jokes at the game's expense. Humor over substance, basically. What is actually wrong with this game is more to do with its handling and polish. The game controls awkwardly, the graphics range anywhere between charmingly retro to just plain bad, the content is lacking and requires specific goals to be completed on top of winning first place. The game is far from perfect, but I don't think it's devoid of value, like many internet funnymen claim.
Let me start with a talking point I rarely start with, which is the sound. If you're a sonic fan, you're probably used to hearing this repeated over and over and over, ad nauseam, but the soundtrack is honestly the best part of this game. It's really strange to me, then, that the first time I heard anyone talk about this game was someone complaining that the soundtrack sucked. Many times when I hear that argument made, it's from people who see sonic and expect "super rad 90s cool guy rock/techno." You know, somewhere between sonic adventure 1&2 and the originals. The thing about this soundtrack, though, is that it's just plain amazing. It's got a more smooth pop sound to it, with some of the catchiest and most uplifting vocals I've heard in a game of that era, if not of all time. I do not understand how a person can hear Can You Feel The Sunshine and not actually feel the sunshine.
Okay, actually gameplay. It...works. It doesn't excel at anything, really, it just kinda works, and I wish it worked better because I love the concept of on-foot sonic racing gameplay. I also hear people complain about that concept in itself, which doesn't make sense because I think sonic on-foot is perfectly fit for competitive racing. Unfortunately, the game has handling that's just bordering on good, tracks with turns and hills that don't quite fit the characters' movement physics, and collectibles that are extremely too easy to just miss. But it really does just kinda work. If you put in the work and get used to the movement physics and handling, you'll find that the game is at least fun to control and move around with. It's just a shame that you might not win as often as you'd hope while having fun.
Graphically, I love this game. Is it graphically good? Well... maybe? I don't know how to reconcile my personal tastes for old low-poly graphics and actual objective quality, so let me just say that this game is charmingly rudimentary. This clearly looks like a first pass at true 3D sonic, and it makes me wish they did a whole mainline sonic game with this graphical style. It's jagged, angular, and choppy, and I love it.
Okay this review is full of a lot of biased and opinionated statements, but... here it is, I guess! I like this game, despite all the issues with its quality. If you've avoided it based off of a humorous youtuber, maybe give it a quick try and see how you feel about it personally. Nothing to lose, really.

You Will Love Or Hate This Game   daryl96
Overall: 6.5
Before I start I need to put this out for this game. The Sega Saturn was Love or Hate console and for it being a Sega you would expect a Sonic game but the game Sonic Xtreme was cancelled but one game was made which is infamous. Sonic R has been in the light has one of the worst Sonic game ever made, for people who say that I say to you, have you played Sonic 2006? I'm going off topic what I'm saying is Sonic R is not that bad.
Graphics: 9
For Saturn the 3D worlds look really good and the characters look good and the world do look a bit blockly but then again 3D was still new at the time so there was very little to be look at but the animations look good. It can be hard see what is what with some walls like bricks and others like paper but it not ugly by far.
Sound: 10
I can see you faces now you think I'm crazy don't you? But I love the music in this game and the songs, I think are really good T.J Davis who sung all the songs has got a beautiful voice when I here the songs I can't help but bob my head to some of them. Yes there are better songs Like the main theme from Sonic Adventure but I love the soundtrack and my favourite one's is Super Sonic Racing (main theme) and Diamond In The Sky (Radiant Emerald)  I do like the music, if you don't that's cool that what you think but don't judge on a different opinion.
Addictiveness: 5
Growing Up a sonic fan this was the only Sonic racing game I had, has I didn't play sonic drift because 1. I didn't have a Sega Game Gear and 2 I live in Britain and Sonic drift was only released in Japan. The game is boring when you got everything and know where everything is.
Story: 1
The story is bad, Sonic Tails are about to go on holiday and there race event and Dr Eggman is in it so sonic enters it as well and he know where the chaos emerald's are so sonic needs to get them all back. Again. That's is really basic but a sonic story in a nutshell.
Depth: 7
For time this game was depth. You need to collect 5 coins from all 4 race tracks and then you unlocked all the characters; Metal Sonic in the first track Resort Island, Tails Doll the second race track, Racial City. Egg Robo in Rusty Ruin the 4th and Metal Knuckles in the 5th track Reactive Factory. But you need to finished in top 3 and race them to unlock them, which is hard if don't know the shortcuts. You can collect the 8 chaos emeralds 2 per track and place first in every race you can unlocked Super Sonic with will make the rest of the game boring.
There a few mini games like tag and a wired balloon game.
Difficulty: 4
If you know all the shortcuts than this game is easy and can be done in one sitting but some of the controls can make it harder but it easy overall.
So Sonic R is good but not great and for those who know No I'm not being cursed by the Tails Doll and being forced to do a fairly good review.

Can you feel your sanity?   EAPyoutube
Nowadays, you probably see Sonic being treated like a toothpick by Sega. Bad camera angles, annoying/useless characters, long loading screens and overused content to try and keep the Classic fandom alive. The only reason why Sonic is still is still a thing is nostalgia and Sonic Colours/Generations. Don't get me wrong, I love Sonic. Heck, I even thought the hedgehog's recent outing (Sonic Lost World) was ok, and critics hated it!
Anyway, going onto the topic of Sonic R, the game was released in 1997 to compete against Mario Kart 64 and upcoming Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing. Published by Sega, developed by Traveller's Tales (People behind Sonic 3D Blast and Lego games) with the help of Sonic Team comes a racing game for the Sega Saturn and PC (and to be re-released for Sonic Gems Collection), Sonic R. Does it live up to the game's hype from 1997? Not quite.
After the cancellation of Sonic Xtreme, the Sega Saturn had no 3D Sonic game on it. Sonic Team tried their best to keep their fans happy with Sonic in Christmas Nights, Sonic Jam's Sonic World and the closest thing to 3D Saturn Sonic game, Sonic R. Unfortunately, fans had to be greeted with a game with slippery controls and cheesy soundtrack. Though critics loved it in 97, the critics now think opposite nowadays.
Sonic R has no story unless you were bothered to read the instruction manual, or if you were bored in the car and you had got the game. The story is simple. Sonic sees a poster about a race and decides to enter, but it turns out EggMan enters as well, so Sonic and friends race. Move over Heavy Rain! This gets story of the year! Seriously though, this didn't need a story anyway. It's a racing game.
Sonic R has about 11 characters, which is more than Mario Kart 64, but falls in track department, as there is only 5 tracks.About the slippery and cheesy music. The game is only playable if you play with the 3D Saturn controller. Sonic R with a d-pad is like chasing a Ferrari down the motorway whilst wearing baggy jeans. You might as well throw that controller out the window. The controls in this game are slippery. Bump into the wall or another person and you start skidding around. Fall into water, you take ages to get out. Collecting Chaos Emeralds and Sonic Tokens? Yeah, good luck with that.
Speaking of Chaos Emeralds and Sonic Tokens, you need to collect all seven Emeralds to unlock Super Sonic and the 5th track. You also need to collect tokens to unlock the other five characters. If you collect all 5 tokens in a stage, you have to come at least 3rd, so that should be ok, but you have to come 1st to be able to obtain the emerald you found, and the worst part about it is that if you are collecting them, you're going to find it impossible to come first, since the CPU players will go way past you when you are stuck in the emerald's area and cannot get out since you're trying to get out of the area but cannot do so, since you are playing a game with bad controls.
Also, the soundtrack. The soundtrack, despite being catchy and fun to listen to, it was not really meant for a racing game. It's like if someone developing the game said "Hey, my cousin is releasing a new album. Maybe we can ask if we can use her songs and she can compose only 1 song that has something to do with the game!". Just kidding, the soundtrack was composed by Richard Jacques, the man behind many Sega game soundtracks. His work is good, but it's not suitable here.
The summary? Sonic R is a game that is probably going to break your sanity. I'd give this a skip and instead play Sonic and AllStars Racing Transformed. If that's not your cup of tea, just play Mario Kart.

Playing this game will make you lose brain cells!   quicknicolas
The graphics aren't bad, as a Saturn game. The music DOESN'T EVEN FIT THE GAME, and the sounds are just mediocre. Sonic R isn't very addicting, all it makes you want to do is quit. There is NO story at all. There's only 5 racing tracks, and they stretch out the game by making getting the chaos emeralds and getting first place EXTREMELY hard, which doesn't really make it fun. It is VERY hard, and not in a good way. The controls are HORRIBLE, there are magnets in the walls, and the tracks are extremely complicated, which makes finding coins and emeralds hard. If you want to 100% this, get ready to ruin your brain cells.

Its a Good Game!   clifton123
This game is a short, relaxing, and fun game that does exactly what sonic does best. Soon youll be racing through the levels and unlocking the bonus characters again.
The graphics are decent for the console yet they can bug out and throw you into a matrix of color. But when theyre working its exciting, theirs weather changes, nice water shading and a big blue sky!
This games music is phenomenal and anyone who plays it this day and age will have it playing through their head all day and night! Its relaxing. The SFX can bug out and get really loud occasionally but very fitting with the actions.
This game goes by very fast. The average person will have unlocked everything within the first 5 hours of gameplay. Yet it has a huge replay value for its music and multiplayer functionality!
The game doesnt have any minigames, and only has 5 levels to its name. Collectible chaos emeralds and a second set of charecters are mostly what adds to its depth, which can be collected simply with alittle skill and knowledge.
This game is slightly difficult and can get confusing if you dont know the routes. weather changes can throw you off track but once you get it down its fairly simple.
I rate this game a 7.9 whoppers out of 10 because its gameplay, unlockables, and music make this an absolute favorite game of my childhood and a memorable experience today. This would certainly be a 9* game if it had an exciting storyline for its story mode or a battle mode.
But those are saved for future games! Hope this review is usefull!
