Best Of The Sonic In The Mega Drive Days   daryl96
Overall: 10
Sonic 3 was not that good for me when I first play it. When I beat the Final Boss it felt very odd. I was Like That's it. When I played Sonic Jam and played Sonic 3 and Knuckles for the first time I felt better. It was only a few years later when I got the Internet, I found out Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles where meant to be 1 game, not 2. But sonic 3& Knuckles is the one of the best if not the best game I've ever played. But the levels are really big and fun with a mix of platform areas, timed jumps and walks and speed.
Angel Island Zone- is green hill zone but with a tropical look and a jungle that catches fire and is fairly easy and good for beginners.
Hydrocity Zone- the only zone which both acts is mostly under water and can be hard at times.
Marble Garden Zone- a okay level but the spike balls can be a pain and the crushers. You can get a load of rings as well, the most I got is 740 rings.
Carnival Night Zone- A Casio Night zone feel with the barrels being the pain of the level. There one that a lot of people have trouble with but when you know it, it becomes really easy.
Ice cap zone- My favorite level in Sonic 3, lots of speed and the music is good. And act 2 is really fast.
Launch Base zone- not that hard or long and is very boring of a final level (until Sonic & Knuckles)
Sonic & Knuckles levels.
Mushroom Hill Zone- A easy level and very mushroom themed. It is possible to get all 7 Super Emeralds in the one zone.
Flying Battery Zone.- a level with bottomless pits and easy areas to get crushed, but is really fun.
Sandopolis Zone- I don't like this level, is not bad but the 2nd act is really long.
Lava Reef Zone- if you don't have the fire shield you will get hit a lot. The fire shield will make this act easy.
Sky Sanctuary Zone- Long and can be really hard with many areas to jump into bottomless pits and areas that can get you crushed.
Death Egg Zone- the hardest level and can be painful with some areas difficult to do. Act 2 as anti gravity which is a pain on the conveyor belt.
Doomsday Zone- where you rammed into Robotnik like a angry bull.
Graphics: 10
The game on the Mega Drive as never been so beautiful. Full of colours and sonic looks great and shows what the Mega Drive can do. With Sonic 2 it looks much better which for the time was really good. Sonic never breaks and keeps the animations rolling.
Sound: 9
Some of the music is really good and some of best of Music before Crush 40 started doing the music. All the levels fit the stages well and really go the atmosphere. Carnival Night sounds like a Circus song and Death Egg sounds si-fi. Compare to sonic1 and 2 the same level only that all the songs are great.
Addictiveness: 9
With 3 different stories and many different paths to take the replay value is really high. I take different paths all the time and some can lead to an extra life or cut a massive chunk of the level.
Story: 5
Its a sonic story there not much to say. But the extra is you need to get the Master Emerald to save Angel Island to put it back into the sky. Both Sonic and Tails story are the same. Knuckles story take place after Sonic Story which is the same but you need to get the Master Emerald from Mecha Sonic and Robotnik.
Depth: 7
The levels are big, 3 different playable stories. The levels are so big you could take many routes to get to the goal. With the chance to unlock Hyper Sonic from collecting the 7 Chaos Emeralds and the Super Emeralds will make you very powerful. The only thing that can kill Hyper Sonic is getting crushed and Bottomless pits. Even if you do 100% you still want to replay it to find a different route. Knuckles as many different paths and they are dangerous and hard.
Difficulty: 5
If you played it as much as I did it is very easy, unless you play as Knuckles his levels are hard and will make you rage quit a few times. Playing as Tails is easy as you can fly over major part of the levels. When you get the super forms all you need is play till the end.
The game is best of the sonic. Don't play sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles alone play them together.

A worthy sequel to a great game   noobpwner59
After the huge success of Sonic 2 expectations of its sequel were high, because of that Sega tried to make this one of their biggest games ever, due to limitations in time and the system, they had to release it in two separate games, but when you combine them you get the full version of Sonic 3, and boy is it great.
Graphics:    The graphics are one of the games greatest qualities, I have never seen better on any Genesis game, the backgrounds were very colorful and looked gorgeous, the sprites were very high quality and unlike other games at its time, the sprites were not too pixelated, the animations were very smooth and the 3d special stages also looked amazing. It was beautiful game and even put some Super Nintendo games to shame. 10/10
Sound:   The sound is great, the opening theme is very catchy and the other songs are also great. The soundtrack is not as good Sonic 1 or 2, its still great. The sound FX are the about the same as Sonic 1 and 2, not the best in the series sound-wise, it is still great. 8/10
Addictiveness, Gameplay, and Design:    The gameplay is changed very little from Sonic 2, all 3 buttons jump, and the physics engine allow you to run at fast speeds. There are some changes, pressing the jump button twice allows Sonic to shield himself in mid-air, making it easier to defeat enemies. Shields had also been improved, instead of just protecting you from a attack, it can also make you immune to some attacks, and perform special abilities, the fire shield protects you from fire attacks and allows you to charge at enemies in mid-air, the water one protects you from drowning and allows you to bounce. The lightning shield protects you from electricity, picks up rings, and allows sonic to double jump. These additions work well and add a lot to the gameplay.  A new character called Knuckles is introduced and add more to the game, however, I find his gameplay is alright, Sonic's is much better,  Knuckles is slower and has a weaker jump then Sonic, he can glide instead. The shields do not attack like Sonic, however the other effects of the shields remain. The level design is great, I personally prefer Sonic 2's levels, these are still great fun and very face paced. Definitely worth more than one playthrough.  9/10
Story:   There isn't much story, there is still more than the other Sonic games, it is about Robotnik stealing emeralds and framing Sonic to get the emerald's guardian against him. It is a solid story, and doesn't distract from the gameplay, it fits the game well and it works. 7/10
Depth:    The game is a very long lasting game with much to do. There is much more levels than the the previous installments and the levels also feel bigger. You have 4 options of characters, Sonic, Tails, Sonic and Tails, and Knuckles. The game takes a few hours to complete, and you can also unlock two forms of super Sonic, and there is a hidden boss battle. This is a game with many things to do and you can expect to play this game for quite a while. 10/10
Difficulty:   The levels were a bit harder than Sonic 2, and the bosses were too, but not by much. The difficulty is a little tough but not too hard. The game has a feature where Tails can be used to fly Sonic over obstacles, and that can be pretty cheap and make the game too easy, but if you don't use it the difficulty will be at a pretty good level, and even if you do, the fly is limited. Knuckles can climb walls but the game is still harder as him because he is not as good as Sonic, and when landing from his glide, there is also a small delay which can leave you open to attack and slow down the gameplay. The save feature also makes the game much easier, making it more forgiving for you to die and making continues almost pointless. One last thing about difficulty I also found that you got a lot of 1-ups in the game and that also made the game easier. Although it has it tough points, and the new character also makes the game harder, some of the game's features lower the difficulty quite a bit from Sonic 1 and 2. 6/10
Overall:   Although I did personally prefer Sonic 2, I have to admit that much has been improved. The gameplay is just as fun as the previous installments and the graphics are some of the best on the Genesis. The game will last quite a while and you will have lots of fun during that time. 9/10
A Must play

Sega's best Genesis game yet!   Aska1987
Sega created Sonic 3 and it's sequel Sonic & Knuckles in 1994, and S&K had a lock-on with it. If you locked on Sonic 3, you can play this! This game is so fun to play and you can do the level select and debug mode a lot easier than Sonic 3, because for that you go up, up, down, down, up, up, up, up when the SEGA screen fades black and before the screen turns white again. For Sonic 3 & Knuckles you enter Angel Island Zone and swing on a vine and press left, left, left, right, right, right, up, up, up and press Start + A but to do debug mode you go to Mushroom Hill Zone (on level select) and grab on to the thing that you pull down to get up to the platform (forgot what it's called) and enter the same code as in Angel Island Zone and press Start + A.
Now, this was the first (and only) appearance of Hyper Sonic :( but they didn't use him in any other game for some reason. The difference between Super and Hyper Sonic is Hyper Sonic cannot drown but Super Sonic can. Also Hyper Sonic is all 7 colors of the Super Emeralds and Super Sonic is only yellow. The graphics of characters and objects are really good.
Sega made a very good job converting these 2 games together and adding Knuckles as an available character, but the soundtrack is awesome. Listen to Ice Cap, Hydro City and Flying Battery. (sorry for splitting Hydro and City up, I needed to keep my spelling correct.)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       I will always play this game no matter what. Like Sonic 3, Every time Sonic fails me, I play this game. Not much to say here except it's AWESOME!
The main story is that Knuckles was tricked by Dr. Robotnik being told Sonic and Tails were evil and were trying to take the emeralds so Knuckles took them off Sonic, but in Hidden Palace Zone Knuckles helps Sonic and Tails get out and he tries to take the Master Emerald off Dr. Robotnik after Sonic tells Knuckles he was trying to get the Chaos Emeralds so Dr. Robotnik couldn't get them and he wants to give them to Knuckles. So that's the story.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     This game takes a few days to beat and has a save screen where you can save the game, but if you choose no save mode and speed run the game, it takes about 2 hours. Meh, took me weeks to beat Sonic 3.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         The difficulty is in the middle really, because it is easy and hard at the same time, the easy bit being the bosses, the medium bit is beating the game, and the hard bit being collecting all the Chaos and Super Emeralds. So basically the game play is easy, and the special stages are hard.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         So that's my review for Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and it took me ages to write up, so I hope you enjoyed it! Bye!

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 w/ Knuckles   gamefreak0814
Overall - 10
This game was fun without Knuckles as a playable character, but now that they added an entirely different set to it by adding Knuckles as a playable character, it's funner to play now. I still prefer going in as Sonic & Tails, but Knuckles story is pretty good too. This is definitely a game anyone should play. The controls are simple and the game is fun. Play this game!
Graphics - 10
Just like in Sonic The Hedgehog 3, I give this a 10. The graphics are amazing, especially during the emerald challenges. Knuckles glide looks exceptionally well for its time too. Every time you break a rock or something, everything just goes flying and there's no screw ups or anything in this game. Well done!
Sound - 9
Still...It does get annoying playing the emerald challenges with the sound on. The constant beep beep beep is the only thing that really annoyed me about this game. However I still find myself humming to the catchy tunes of each zone as I'm waltzing my way through robot crabs and attacking chickens. Sounds great!
Addictiveness - 10
I'm giving this a 10 mainly because I would play Sonic The Hedgehog 3 when I was little and would never stop, but with Knuckles...I'm gonna need glasses soon because I CANNOT stop playing this game. It's a fun game and you should play it at least once, because you'll get hooked.
Story - 9
With Knuckles as a playable character, you understand more of the story than in Sonic The Hedgehog 3. But still, Sonic you would've stopped Knuckles from taking your precious jewels in the first place! It's still pretty interesting.
Depth - 9
The extra levels make the game even funner than before. And going through as...You know what I can't tell you because then I'd be spoiling the surprise. However the game's pretty lengthy and it's one of the best I've ever played.
Difficulty - 9
The game is especially difficult when you play as Knuckles. The game is easier when you play as Tails. And it's about average when you play as Sonic. All around, the difficulty ranges depending on which character you choose. So I chose Knuckles, and I have to say I got at least 2 game overs before I finally got to the end of the game. Anyone who's anyone should definitely play this game at least once in their life!

Sonic 3 and Knuckles   VizzedGuy111
Guy's Review
Sonic 3 and Knuckles, yep this is probably gonna be a good review. The reason why is because I played the game and I was happy. Sonic Original and Sonic 2 are great games, but Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the cake on top of those classic games. I rated this game 9.5 in overall and here's why.
Let's talk about graphics first. The graphics are okay since in the intro, you see a 3-Dimensional Sonic and that was an okay graphics. Then you see 2-Dimensional Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles and it was okay too. So i give it an 8.
Now the sound. The music is quite impressive to music like Ice Cap Zone Act 1 and Angel Island Zone Act 2. However, the sound are pretty much what you might expect. Like the jumping sound and the spring sound. So I give the sound a 6.
Let's talk about the addictiveness. This is the fun part because I'm gonna tell you how likely you would want to play again. Well this game does have a score and a story. However, this game kinda focuses more on story due to playing the entire story but you feel like playing this game again for memories. So I rate it 6.
Now the story. This is the interesting part. I don't want to spoil the story but the story is pretty interesting.  The story is a little different so you may want to play the game to figure it out. I would rate it an 8.
Let's talk about depth. This game is basically Sonic 3 plus Sonic and Knuckles which mean this game contains a lot of content. There's also a collection of items for Sonic you can use to transform him but I'm not gonna tell about. I rate it a good 9.
Finally, let's talk about the difficulty. It's really hard to tell about the difficulty but you may get a couple of lives lost. Depending how well you play this game, this game will feel easy, but if you play bad (not to be offensive) this game can be a pain in the butt.  There's also the bosses in which they can be hard. Also you need to know how each level work in order to complete the level. So I give it a 6.
I'm finally done with this review so if you never play this game, go try it! It's pretty fun!

Review 5 Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic 3   mike345
I gave this game a 10/10 for two reasons 1.it gave me the chance to see what it was like to be super sonic and i was able to get all the emeralds because I couldn't get all when i was a kid. Also I was able to become Hyper Sonic by using the cheats
GRAPHICS
The graphics are perfect just like in the original Sega Genesis Console with the original game play of the game.
SOUND
The games Soundtrack sounds like the original game and the levels soundtrack is amazing it's like nothing has changed from the original game.
ADDICTIVENESS
At the start of playing the game I was really addicted to it and I would used to play it on the Retro Game Room every day.
DEPTH
The depth in this game is huge with the combination of Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 makes this games depth huge.
DIFFICULTY
The difficulty in the game is the difficulty combination of the two Sonic games,so I wouldn't say it's too hard or too easy but I thinks it's perfect for players that like platform games.
OVERALL
Overall I thought the game was great it will always be one of my favorite Sonic games on the Sega Genesis console.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles review.   Stevie 764
Here comes another game review from yours truly, me! ;)
The game I will be reviewing is "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" for the sega genesis, it is my most favorite game of all time.
How to play: You play as Sonic, the main hero who stops Dr. Robotnik once again but now you can also play with knuckles, such a handy feature. Also, there are 8 save files now, how lucky is that? Anyways, you start off with 3 lives, (just like most games) and you can earn extra lives until you hit 99, you can earn continues by going into any bonus/special stage and collecting 50 total rings in there, you can hold up to 99! O_O There are a total of 14 different zones, which makes it handy. Onto the review now.
Graphics - 10
As far as graphics go, it is really good for a sega genesis game, all the blocks, and the walls are colored nice and perfect, there are waterfalls and many other things, like lava, or other things. I give the graphics a 10.
Sound - 10
The sounds are still great, many sounds are taken from sonic 1 & 2, but there are many new sounds, and every zone has completly new music, although many sounds from past sonic games was recycled, atleast Sega has the rights for the music and sounds. I give the sounds a 10.
Addictiveness - 8
Well, I have to say, it is a great game, especially with the stuff in the game that keeps you playing it, I play the game an hour or more each day that I play it, so I would give the addictiveness a 8.
Depth - 9
This is a long game, and I got to say, it has more than 20 acts between 14 different zones. That would keep you playing, there is a secret to open up zone 14 if you meet a simple requirement. This game is big, considering that there are 14 zones in total, atleast the original sonic 3 gave mercy by putting in a save battery pack in the actual cartridges which helps out a LOT. You will need that save battery pack to beat this game without having to stress unlike sonic 1 & 2. I give the depth a 9.
Story - 7
The story is good, especially how the story goes. "Sonic and Tails find Angel Island and fly there, Sonic turns into Super Sonic with the emeralds he has and breezes right through, but hang on... *BAM* The force of the hit from Knuckle's digging causes Sonic's emeralds to fly out, all spread apart. A second later, you can't see any emeralds anymore, what happened to them? Find out for yourself."
I didn't copy that from a website, I swear! That was my opinion of how the story goes, and I do like the story. I give it a 7.
Difficulty - 8
I finally get a chance to talk about the difficulty! The game starts out pretty easy, but when you get near the end of the game, it will bring you to frustration land, where you can release all of your frustration there. If you don't have Super Sonic by the time you get to the Hidden Palace zone, (Zone 11) the death egg zone will pretty much be impossible without even cheating! It is hard, but fun for people who love challenge. (I like challenge) I would give the difficulty a 8.
Overall - 9.2
This game is totally recommend for sonic fans and people who have heard, played, or even seen a sonic game from a video, or whatever, pretty much everyone. It is a fun game, it is such one of the classics, and I still haven't even finished the game completly without any cheating, despite the random story twist and the difficulty, it is a great game. I want you to play this game sooner or later, because this game is a game you don't want to miss playing.
This has been a review from yours truly, Stevie 764. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you check out my other game reviews. ;)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles   bbryan217
I give this game a 10 because I loved playing the old sonic sega games and when I was younger, I had sonic and knuckles but I didnt have sonic 3. Now that I've played it, I've just love how sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles tie in together. The storyline of it all and how the chaos emeralds turn into super chaos emeralds is pretty good. I like how Tails gives you a hand in the game because in the original Sonic and Knuckles, Tails wasn't in the game and its kinda fun to now have Tails in there. All of it gets pretty addicting. So, again, I would give this game a 10.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles   dumlink23
Sonic The hedgehog 3 and Knuckles is my favorite Classic Sonic game and ill try to explain it here
Story:10
Sonic and Tails travel to a island that has mysteriously appeared in the ocean not knowing the island(Angel island) is actually a mystical island that uses the power of The Master Emerald to float in the sky.Knuckles the Echidna has been tricked by Eggman who was trapped here after sonic CD and has made Knuckles think sonic is there to use the Chaos Emeralds to steal the Master Emerald.Later after the Master Emerald is finaly taken from Knuckles by Eggman Knuckles,Sonic and Tails work together to stop Eggman from launching the Death Egg again!
Graphics:10
This game's got really great looking visuals for a Genesis it appears to blend Sonic CD and sonic 2's visuals together a bit and it looks great the ground,Sonic,Tails and everything else look really great.
Sound:9
The Music in the Original Sonic The hedgehog 3 without the S&K cartridge attached had some music inspired by Micheal Jackson(and yes we all know its true,a few of the songs have beats and sound the same)Aswell as the original credits theme was awesome but they cover those up and replace them, but i still love the full games music.
Gameplay:8
The game play is the same as Sonic 2 ya got the spindash and super sonic if you collect all the chaos emeralds(and Hyper Sonic if you collect all the Super Emeralds in the S&K half)The Super Peel Out isn't here though from Sonic CD.Also Tails can fly in game now and in 2 Player mode Tails can fly sonic around.Gameplay has improved a bit from Sonic 2.
Depth:10
In the original Sonic 3, the amount of levels there were it didnt even have as many levels as Sonic 2, it was so short, then you attached sonic 3 and S&K together and you get the longest Classic Sonic game!
Addictiveness:8
Eh its as addictive as a sonic game you will averagely play it and then probably practice to do your best normal stuff.
Difficulty:7
Average difficulty to a game not that hard and it gets more challenging as you continue
Overall: 10
This is the best Classic Sonic game in my opinion.
Its not too hard, its fun to play through, the music is great, the pacing is good and the visuals look great.
Probably my favorite Genesis game on the console.
Play it here and i hope you see why!

Amazing Game!!   Mr.SuperSonic360
SEGA has made some of the best games of all time, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles is no exception. This is one of my favorite Sonic games and my favorite part is getting Hyper Sonic. HYPER SONIC IS SO BROKEN!! Hyper Sonic can breath underwater and do a mid-air dash attack which not only counts as a double jump, but will make the screen flash white for a split second and destroy every badnick on the screen. Now I'm gonna quote a youtuber here "Hyper Sonic is pretty much God in hedgehog form." So yea, this is one of my favorite Sonic games of all time. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles review by 98Gamingstar   98Gamingstar
Today I am going to be reviewing one of my most favourite Sonic games of all time! Ever since I first played it I loved it. I'm only 11 so I did not get the chance to play it when it originally came out on the SEGA genesis / mega drive. However, a few months ago I was very bored and I was looking through the games for the genesis. After a while of wondering what to pick / play I chose this. I started to play it and I loved it. This review is hopefully not going to be to long but I am going to try and explain why I like this game in as much detail as I can.
-Graphics-
This graphics for this game are pretty much what I would expect to see in a classic Sonic game. Nothing has to much detail like in some of the later games. Perhaps SEGA should have made more like this. Anyway, it's nice to see some good 2D graphics for a change. I'm not saying I hate other 2D graphics, they just going be improved on. This on the other hand have sprites that are perfect. The background / scenery for each stage / level is also wonderful. If SEGA can ever be bothered to make this into a 3D game, I think it would look beautiful.
-Sound-
This sound in this game is some of the best sound in a Sonic game. I really like the way everything sounds. The music fits well with the levels and you can go into relaxing mode whenever you play it. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the music for the special stages as it is REALLY catchy and fits well. Those opening beats for it are just some of the best sounds for a Sonic game. The music for the file select is also really good and relaxing and is just what you need before you start the game. The sound for jumping and stuff also sound pretty neat and fit in with the whole cartoon theme nicely.
-Addictiveness-
This game is one of the most addicting games I've ever played in my entire life. I don't know what about it makes it so addicting. It just is such a wonderful game you just also wonder what will happen next, what the next boss fight will be, what the next level is going to be. From the moment you load up your first save file is the moment you become hypnotised to play this game until completed. If SEGA made more games this addicting I would well..I dunno what I would do but you get the idea.
-Story-
This game has a BRILLIANT story. I'm not going to tell you the story as there are cut scenes in it and you can work it out yourself. Although I can tell you the basic story : Basically Dr Robotnik tricks a red echidna called Knuckles into trying to kill Sonic and Tails or something. Anyway the more you play it, the more you get the story. The story is well written for a classic Sonic game and is not one that should be down graded or over looked. It makes you think what happens next and all that.
-Depth-
This game is a size I would expect for a classic Sonic game. It's quite a big game and you will be spending a lot of time playing the special stages. However the level design is very good and has lots of hidden pathways for you to explore. It offers quite a lot to do like getting all the chaos emeralds and completing the game with all the characters. It should last you a while. Unless you spend most of your day playing video games.
 -Difficulty-
This game is not very difficult to complete. Sure it might be hard if you have never played a single Sonic game before. Or if your playing it for the first time it might be a bit of a challenge. If you are someone who plays a lot of video games you will find it easy. The levels and boss fights are pretty easy to play through. The controls are easy to learn as well.
Well this is another review by 98Gamingstar. I hope you liked it.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles: Huge, Colorful and Excellent   janus

When playing Sonic 3, did you wonder why there were rings that weren't accessible? where had Robotnik's Death Egg crashed? what happened to Knuckles at the Launch Base? Well, wonder no more because you have your answer inside Sonic's best 16-bits adventure: Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

Graphics: 9/10

This game is HUGE – 34-bits according to Sega. This shows in the graphics.

They are a notable improvement from Sonic 2. Both Sonic and Tails and better-drawn and move more fluidly, both in the traditional left-to-right fashion and all around. Indeed, in Angel Island Zone, you can grab vines and go 360 degrees. In Hydrocity Zone, there are cylinders going up and down and turning on themselves, making you see all around the characters. Sonic and Tails' drawing is also much better inside Special Stages. They are in 3D like Sonic 2, but there is no lag when they are moving. Finally, Knuckle's drawing is also well-done. His special abilities (gliding and climbing walls) is done well and he can move 180 degrees with it, making you see his face in the process. However, I think his head is a little too square inside the Special Stage.

Each zone is very beautifully designed are better-drawn than in Sonic 2. In Angel Island, the first part has nice palm trees and tropical setting, whereas the second part (which was set on fire) has a blazing background. Hydrocity has water all around (including in the background) and there are many water fiends making your life difficult. Marble Garden has marble columns all around, Carnival Night is brighter and shinier that Casino Night (there's even a part where Knuckles shuts off the lights), the Ice Cap has snow and ice everywhere (although it's not slippery as it is in Mario Games) and the Launch Base Act 1 boasts a very beautiful image of the Death Egg (you also see it fly at the start of Sky Sanctuary). Mushroom Hill has bouncy mushrooms, Sandopolis has quicksand, hieroglyphics and heat that makes the background a little blurry, the Lava Reef has lava all around (yay for fire shield) and the Death Egg shows both the ship's circuits and the Earth below. The Flying Battery, Hidden Palace and Sky Sanctuary zones weren't as well-drawn – the background wasn't as detailed – but were better than Sonic 2 nonetheless.

Finally, Robotnik's machines (mid-act and end-of-act) are nicely drawn but also well-adapted for the zone. Angel Island and Lava Reef shoot fire, Hydrocity play with water, Carnival use the neon's energy to generate electricity, Ice Cap swirls ice and tries to freeze you and the Sandopolis had both quicksand and an ancient machine trying to crush you. Special mention for Marble Garden, where Robotnik actually flies into the background, the Hand at the end of Lava Reef that comes in front of you and Robotnik's ultimate creation in Death Egg 2, whose core is in the background before it starts trying shooting deadly Super Emerald beams at you.

Special mention to the Ice Cap, where Sonic starts on a snowboard and zips past trees. Watch out (seriously) if you're prone to seizures as Hyper Sonic (when you collect all emeralds from Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles) flashes in an unusual manner.

Music: 10/10

Along with beautiful graphics, Sonic 3 and Knuckles has an outstanding soundtrack.

For each act except Lava Reef, all second acts are a remix of act 1 and I thought it was a good idea. It gives a feeling of continuity unlike Sonic 1 and 2. Also, the music sounded well-suited to my ears. Angel Island sounded very exotic and tropical, Carnival Night sounded like a real carnival (and act 2 sounds almost like act 1, unlike other zones), Sandopolis has an oriental beat to it and Death Egg sounds very modern. The Launch Base music sounds serious and intriguing, hinting about something big happening, Sky Sanctuary sounds strangely epic (but sounds good all the same) and the mid-act boss theme sounds a little less goofy than in Sonic 3 (and has no wooden shoe tap dancing). Finally, Knuckles' theme is a little more elaborate without the wooden tap shoes.

Now, as unimportant as they sound, sound effects are important, and they are well-done in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. The springs sound bouncier, the shields' special attacks sound appropriate (fire/electric attack, water bubble bounce) and bombs (like Robotnik's preview boss at the end of Angel Island 2) sound realistic enough, with the whistling and all. Also, getting an emerald sounds more triumphant as the sound is a decrescendo. Finally, rock-breaking actually sounds like rock-breaking (and there is no lag like Mystic Cave's falling bridges)

Slight negative: the one-up sound was better in Sonic 3. Big plus: the end-of-game mix of all the tracks is better done than Sonic 2.

Addictiveness: 9/10

Thirty-four bits of video game is enough to keep you hooked up, and it's not only about the music.

All zones are huge and have plenty to explore. Unlike previous Sonic games, Special Stages are completely hidden and you will have to search carefully to find them. Granted, some are very easy to find, like Angel Island 2's very first one, at the end of the tunnel you go down of at the very start of the act. One-ups are also well-hidden; fortunately, you get Tails' help when he flies you up for those hard-to-reach spots. On his side, Knuckles can reach those places by climbing walls.

Crossing lampposts with a certain amount of coins still produces a star circle you can jump in. Depending on how much you have, you can jump in a slot machine and earn (or lose) coins like in Sonic 2 (although winning the jackpot doesn't create lag); a gumball machine where you can earn coins, a shield or a life; and a magnetic sphere stage where your earnings can increase quite a bit; try reaching the top if you can!

Story: 10/10

Yes, I put “story” because this game is really one continuous stage divided in several acts. Unlike Sonic 1 and 2, acts are not independent from each other. Since Sonic 2's Sky Chase Zone, everything acts have been logically following the other. Even Donkey Kong Country couldn't achieve such continuity.

At the start of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Tails is still piloting the plane and Sonic, still on his Super Sonic energy, which he loses when he gets knocked by Knuckles. After crossing Angel Island, he fights Robotnik in front of a waterfall and gets drop to Hydrocity. After swimming through, you get blown off to the Marble Garden. At the end of the act, the sun sets and Sonic and Tails  fly to the Carnival Night (the best transition). After partying, a canon shoots them to the Ice Cap, after which a tunnel leads them to the Launch Base.

After Robotnik's failed attempt to Launch, he crashes on the Mushroom Hill. Once Sonic foils his plans, he flies away in the Flying Battery (the Wing Fortress?). After foiling Robotnik's plans, Sonic then lands in (literally; he lands in the sand) the Sandopolis. After crossing the desert and the pyramid, Sonic falls into the Lava Reef where (before the boss of act 2) he falls right under the Death Egg engines. After beating Robotnik, the lava clears, revealing the Hidden Palace. After Robotnik steals the Power Diamond from Knuckles, Sonic teleports to the Sky Sanctuary. After defeating is metal nemesis, he narrowly escapes the crumbling of the Sanctuary and jump in the Death Egg. If Super (preferably Hyper) Sonic is in the team after defeating the Death Egg, then he uses the power of the emeralds to try and defeat Robotnik once and for all. When you do, you slowly fall back down on Tails' plane and give the Floating Island the name it deserves – the Power Diamond, when fully charged, activates the island.

Depth: 10/10

As I've shown in story, Sega managed to put up a very long and logical story to show Sonic's fight against the evil Ivo Robotnik. All zones (except after Lava Reef, since you don't have any Special Stages to look for) are gigantic and have a lot of treasures to be found.

But that's not all. The original Sonic and Knuckles cartridge could be opened and mixed with other games. By putting Sonic 2, you can play as Knuckles through the entire game. He can glide and climb walls (finding hidden one-ups), and when you get out of Special Stages you keep all your coins (but not your shield).

And when you put Sonic 1 (and pressed a+b+c+start), you could access a whole universe of Special Stages. It's seemingly infinite; I think I made it as far as stage 100 (a FAQ says there are 128). You can take the long way and do them all or get the perfect and skip 10 stages.

Difficulty: 5/10

In many ways, Sonic 3 and Knuckles is much easier than Sonic 2.

Compared to Sonic 2, you can restart your game at the last zone you died in keeping all your emeralds. And compared to Sonic 3, you can keep you lives (to a maximum of 99) and continues (maximum 14). Once you reach the Hyper Sonic Stage, touching the Big Rings give you 50 coins. Probably thanks to your shields, you need to double-jump without one in order to become Super/Hyper Sonic.

Speaking of shields, they can protect you from certain attacks (fire with fire, electricity with lightning. Be warned that opposite elements cancel out; getting in water with fire/lighting shield will put them out). That makes boss fights in Angel Island, Carnival Night, Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery and Lava Reef very easy. The lightning shield is a coin magnet so you can enrich yourself easily. Finally, each shield can make you reach high spots (especially the lightning shield), and the bubble shield give you air underwater. You also keep your shield when getting out of Special/Bonus Stages.

The Special Stages are also easier in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. They have less lag than Sonic 2 since you are on a small planet rather than an open-end half pipe. It's much easier to map the Stages, making it easy to get the emerald. The main challenge is to get all the rings (and therefore a 50k pts bonus); blue-colored emeralds are the hardest ones on that matter.

However those stages can be a challenge. The star balls make you move in reverse, putting you at danger to hit a red sphere. Also, the Sonic and Knuckles emeralds have yellow spheres that make you jump ahead; make sure to know where you are landing! Plus, the running accelerates the more time you spend in the stage (and the music accelerates accordingly). Fortunately, you can press up and start before you would normally.

In addition, if you are a completion geek, finishing the game with Tails or Knuckles will be challenging. Knuckles jumps less high than Sonic or Tails, making him follow inferior roads like in Angel Island. However, his ability to break rocks can reveal otherwise inaccessible secret passages. On his side, Tails only become Super with the Super Emeralds, making the way until Mushroom Hill hard. Also, the Marble Garden boss is also fought flying, but you can only hit it from under. That was quite a challenge for me at the time. Fortunately, Super Tails compensates his lagging behind by having Flickys (little birds) flying around and hitting enemies. Finally, since both have special abilities of their own (they can't use fire attack), they become Super/Hyper when they double-jump.

In short, Sonic 3 and Knuckles is a must-try for all video games nostalgics. It's huge, it's colorful, it has  a lot to offer, has an addicting soundtrack and offers four different ways to complete the game. And since you can save your game, don't worry about not completing it on the first try like Sonic 1 and 2. Finally, its lag-free two-player mode, completely different from the regular and which also offers time trials, will keep you busy for hours.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Sega Genesis/Megadrive) Review.   Eddy88
Sonic to the Max.
In 1993, Sega created Sonic 3... Of course, the 1st. Thing that the players noticed was that the game was pretty shorter in comparison with Sonic 2... Also, the Ending of the game didn't felt like a Ending... In another words: It was an Open ending. Deception? Maybe a bit.
But then, In 1994... Sega make the Sequel: Sonic & Knuckles... This cartridge came up with a system named Lock on: With this simple thing (Another cartridge slot in the upper part of the Cartridge.) the player could fuse games: So, Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles= a New Sonic game. The result was a real impact: A long game, more playable characters, more Emeralds, new transformations... The Dream of all Sonic fan of the Era!
Deception? What Deception? This is a master piece!... So, That Master piece (Named Sonic 3 & Knuckles) is the game that we're going to talk today... Ready? So, Let's Run thought!
History: The history is set just after the ending of Sonic 2. The Death Egg, build by Robotnik, is taken down by Sonic... The Robotnik's space station falls over a Floating Island named "Angel Island", the impact of the huge ship makes the island fall to the ocean... Amazingly, Robotnik survived to the fall. And he's helped by an Red Echidna named Knuckles... The evil doctor takes advantage of the Goodness of the inhabitant of the Island, and tells him that he just were escaping of two evil animals: A Hedgehog and a Two-Tailed fox. Knuckles believes on his story and decides to help the Doctor to get rid of them... Some days later, Sonic and Tails arrives to the Island (after hearing the rumors about Robotnik being still alive) but, the Red echidna attacks both, steals the Sonic's Chaos Emeralds and escapes... Our heroes chases him. And suddenly, then they find an Army of Badniks blocking their path. After defeating all, they figure out that Robotnik is still alive. To make the things worst: Robotnik is planning to steal the "Master Emerald" (the Island's main power generator) to power up the Death Egg.
So, as you see it's pretty long and interesting history. This might be the most complete history I've seen in the 16-Bits Sonic games. (9/10)
Graphics: If you have played the two (three, if we count Sonic CD) previous games. the 1st thing you will notice is that the Characters have new sprites. Also, the Backgrounds seems to had more details... Being far superior to the graphics of the previous games. The animations are smooth and some has nice details. (Like the characters making some powder clouds when breaking after taking a great speed) (9/10)
Sound: The music, just like the game, is a master piece. There's not two zones with the same music. Even each act has different music! (Which, usually, is a remake of the music of the previous act)... Launch base zone (both acts, Those voices saying "YO!" fits very well.) Hydropolis (2nd. Act) and Flying Battery (Both acts) are my favorites. Sound FX is the same as the other games (excepting by the Bosses explosion sound.) (10/10)
Addictiveness: The game addictive, Doesn't matter how many times you have finished it. You ever will want a bit more of it. (8/10)
Depth: Let's see: Sonic 3 alone has 6 zones, Sonic & Knuckles has 7... So, there re 13 zones in the game. (14 if you got all the emeralds)
also, Some zones have different kinds of traps and obstacles... Like puzzles or unbreakable walls.it also have three different kinds of shields, everyone gives the character some extras... So, As you see... This game offers a pretty good duration.(10/10)
Difficulty: Well, about difficulty... This game doesn't offer much of that... Figuring out how the beat the bosses isn't a challenge... If you lose a life, it will be because you got squashed or you felled into a pit. (6/10)
Final Rating: 10
This might be one of the Best Sonic games ever made. It can compete with Sonic 2 in terms of "Best saga game" if you're a huge Sonic fan... And you didn't played this game... You're committing a crime. So, Go and play this game. You will not get arrepented.

Sonic and Knuckles & Sonic 3   Marcmoney
Sonic and Knuckles & Sonic 3 is a great game to play. Unfortunately, my computer will not let me play Genesis games. Do not know why, but I keep getting this screen that has weird wavy colors moving diagonal. Anyways, Sonic and Knuckles & Sonic 3 is my favorite because you get to use Knuckles and Tails in it. :) I would recommend getting Sonic and Knuckles & Sonic 3, it is a whole lot of fun. :D

The best sonic game ever   EricCartmen
This is overall my most favorite sonic game ever why do I like this game because all the stages are great the musics spot on because none of the music sounds bad at all and was composed by my most favorite music composer Michael Jackson unfortunately Sega never gave him credit witch is sad because they should have gave him credit. The game is just great with 14 zones in it combining sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles you will get the best hands on experience on this wonderful game because its just amazing. No other sonic game is like this only sonic 3 and knuckles is the only sonic game with the super emeralds and hyper sonic its the 1st game were super tails comes and super tails has these flickeys that will help tails defeat the bosses much easier. Its also the 1st time we see super knuckles and hyper knuckles as he climbs faster and runs faster and glides faster and then threes hyper knuckles which is like super knuckles but i think he goes even faster than super knuckles. It also has my favorite hyper form and only in this game is hyper sonic witch he goes faster he has the power of the element shields he can bounce like the lighting shields he can survive with out drowning in water and he can jump like the fire shield. The games special stages are some of the most fun special stages in any sonic game I ever played. Overall the game is just fantastic and I recommend to anyone who has the time to play video games give this amazing game a try.

Sonic's first game made him a hero. His second, a powerhouse. This one made him a legend   acam
Ever since Sonic the Hedgehog pounded on a "badnik" for the first time, he has been nearly unstoppable. From dozens of video games, to several animated series, to even a couple of comic book series, he (like his former rival, Mario) has been immortalized in nearly all forms of media. Sonic's 3rd Genesis game proves to be one of his best adventures ever.
First, the graphics. All I can say is...beautiful, simply beautiful. Every pixel gives off the exact imagery it has intended to. Sonic Team even was creative enough to try to visually imply the passage of time between Sonic and Knuckles' stories.
The sound is amazing, too. Every ring chime to every "pop" of a badnik is utterly sublime. Also, the music is top notch and catchy.
With the four character selections, extended stories, and the 14 challenging Special Stages, you'll be playing this one for a long time!
The synopsis of Sonic 3 and Knuckles is this: After his "Death Egg" warship is blown out of space by Sonic/Tails at the end of Sonic 2, Dr. Robotnik ("Eggman") recovers it, but not before running into then-newcomer Knuckles the Echidna, Whom he tricks into thinking that Sonic and Tails want to wreak havoc on Knuckles' home, Angel Island in some way. Later, Sonic and Tails arrive to investigate the wreck when Knuckles ambushes the duo, stealing the Chaos Emeralds and starting the story. Now Sonic must fend off the Echidna, as well as stopping the good Doctor's WMD from re launching, all the while collecting the Chaos (and later Super) Emeralds.
As a final note, although the difficulty gets steadily harder as the game goes on, it stays at a good difficulty.

Let's talk Sonic here.   drago
Sonic 3 & Knuckles, probably my most favourite Sonic game on the Genesis. Scratch that, favourite Sonic game ever. I began playing it when I was young, my first Genesis game in fact. My Dad showed me how to play and I was hooked since then. We only had Sonic & Knuckles, though, another reason why this game is so special.
Using lock-on technology, unheard of at the time, and to my knowledge it's one of a kind, adding on Sonic 3 creates the Megadrive Masterpiece. Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I remember when I was about 8 or 9 when my Dad decided to buy Sonic 3 off of the internet. The addition of saving was a necessity for this game with a total of 14 Zones!

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favourite for a reason, it's as great as you want it to be. For one person, the game may just be another in the Trilogy, similar to the rest, another Megadrive Sonic game. For me, I see it as a grand adventure. There's a sense of meaning, story, tension, in this one to me. Sure, it may seem cliche, but let me explain what I mean.
Here's the story.
Eggman steals the Chaos Emeralds, okay, normal Sonic story. Except it's not. We see an immediate consequence of this right at the start of the game. Sonic and Tails both crash into Angel Island, normally floating in the sky but now floating in the Ocean. Will it float forever? Like any good Heroes, we won't wait too long to find out. Eggman manipulates a Red Echidna, Knuckles that Sonic and Tails had the Emeralds all along. And, of course they did, but not for the reasons of evil. Then, the chase begins.
This may seem like a simple story, and it is. It's what works here. Sonic doesn't need to be deep, it's okay to be simple. But what I love about this is how it portrays itself as more than just... That.
I may need to explain again.
As you go through the game, you can see Eggman's effects on the environments you pass through. Burning down the Rainforest on Angel Island, an attempt at launching the Death Egg at his Launch Base, what I presume used to be part of Ice Cap Zone.
Once you get through to Lava Reef Act 2, though, is when you get this feeling of urgency. I need to stop this Mad Doctor and foil his plans. He can't win, he won't win, he's Eggman. And Sky Sanctuary, racing the Death Egg, running as fast as your Legs or Propeller Tails will take you.
This sense of encouragement done all without speech or text. All of it through just playing the game. It's what makes this Story special.
The game's Graphics are a MAJOR step up from the past 2. For starters, the environments feel alive. Backgrounds, Foregrounds, Platforms, all exploding with colour. The shifting sands of Sandopolis, the dense forest in Mushroom Hill and the intense altitude of Flying Battery.
Environments that scream imagination like Lava Reef and Hydrocity. Both Zones break the norm of typical Lava and Water levels. New Ideas like Endless Mine, Carnival Night, Sky Sanctuary, Hidden Palace, Death Egg.
One thing about the stages is the transitions. Each stage shows how you get to the next. After Angel Island you fall into Hyrdocity, after Hydrocity you blast into Marble Garden, after Marble Garden you fly to Carnival Night and so on. I really love this idea, it's what gave me the idea of this game being a 'Grand Adventure.'
As I have said, with a Total of 14 zones and 4 Multiplayer ones on top of that this game is big. It may not be the longest game in the world, but it didn't have to be. 2 different stories that link together beautifully, showing how the greatest friendships evolve from a place of conflict, then into something richer.
All in all, I think I've gushed enough. I think I've said enough to show how much I love this game and how much artistic simplicity can go. This game is great, and if you haven't played it by now... C'mon already!

Sonic 3 & Knuckles.......   themojogamer75
Sonic 3 and Knuckles..... (though for the review I'll call it Sonic 3 complete) where do I begin. Oh yeah, the soundtrack! The sound track is SUPERB! There isn't 1 piece I don't like in this game! It's not as good as Sonic CD Japanese, but it's still pretty dang good! The replay value is great! Like in Metroid, you'll find things and new paths during your playthroughs! This game offers quite a lot of stuff! You can play the game as Sonic & Tails, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles! Thanks to this game we can play as Knuckles in the Sonic 3 alone levels and Tails in the Sonic & Knuckles levels. The game lastly offers a fair difficulty, getting harder the further you get! I will end off the review by saying this; as of now (and probably for a while assuming I don't get a better liking for other games, such as Sonic 2) this is my favorite video game of all time! The content, the music, everything is just perfect! So that does it! Take care and God bless!

One of my favourite 2d Sonic Games yet   Socky123
One of my  favourite 2D Genesis Sonic Games Yet!    That game is hard, however. But its addictive a bit. I love the soundtrack. Sad fact, that they removed Michael Jackson's remixes from original sonic 3.But its for the better I guess. Never really beat ed the game till the sandopolis zone. well. The story was success according to the previous games, which was just an "blank" story about Dr.Eggman looking for chaos emeralds and sonic need to take them all first. That's an story what I want. I love the new Sonic Sprite. As long as tails new flying animation. This game was hard to speed run. Even through the first stage as sonic. Graphics we're fabulous. I love the instant shield of sonic's
and long awaited,Tails flying ability. I don't like Knuckles gliding really, but its good. Its hard to speed run through the stages with Knuckles for some people. Special stages, these we're easier than Sonic 2. Overall, very good.

Sonic and Knuckles & Sonic 3 Cheat Codes

LEVEL SELECT

After the "SEGA" call, start a new game as any character. While in Angle Island Act 1, grab any swinging vine and, while swinging back and forth, enter left, left, left, right, right, right, up, up, up. You should hear a chime like you just grabbed a ring. Now, pause the game and push A. Back at the Main Menu, push up to reveal a secret option: "SOUND TEST". You will see all the zones and a sound test option hear. The small number under the Angle Island level means witch character your playing as. 00 Means Sonic and Tails. 01 Means Sonic alone. 02 Means Tails alone. And 03 means Knuckles.

DEBUG MODE

After entering the LEVEL SELECT code, go to Mushroom Hill zone and grab and of the pulley's found there ( those tall things that you need to climb by pushing down ). While hanging on one, enter left, left, left, right, right, right, up, up, up. Another ring chime will sound. Then, pause and press A. Go back to Level Select and choose the level and character you want to play as. Then, hold A and push START. Note: unlike the debug modes from Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, this time around, you have the option to reverse gravity.

Debug mode controlls:

Arrows: move.
A: reverse gravity as character/Change item in debug mode.
B: enter/exit debug mode.
C: place item/jump as character.

Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles or Super Tails
Activate the level select and debug. When you enter debug mode, create a monitor. It will have an "S" on it. Jump on it to get 50 rings and become Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, or Super Tails!

This is possibly the best Sonic game(s) ever made. It's definitely the best Sonic game(s) on the Genesis. Always loved Sonic and its Cyberpunk undertones.

Best Sonic game in history. There needs to be an HD version with features to play with original or updated graphics, as well as a real recorded soundtrack. S3&K has incredible level design and one of the best video game soundtracks of all time IMO.

Is there anyway to turn off the supersonic music?
thatsoundismine2 01-19-15 - 07:25 PM
if you want sonic to turn into the last object you were in debug mode, jump into a ring but go in debug just before it takes you to the special stage, then go back out(when you die you'll turn back)
thatsoundismine2 01-19-15 - 07:20 PM
In debug mode, try pressing jump and mode switch at the same time to make your character have a seizure/spaz attack!!
