Sonic? In 3D? On the Genesis? Too bad it sucks...   Itachi9695
It's been a while since I did a review, and considering last time (Which was November, by the way) I reviewed some of Sonic's best games, I decided it was time to review the worst. Without further ado, let's jump into "Sonic Rage Month"...oh boy. Before I begin this review, let me just preface this by saying I am a HUMONGOUS Sonic fan, in fact, Sonic is my favorite series of all time, but even I'll admit that he does have his faulty games, this one for example. Also allow me to say that, no, I am not a classic fan only, in fact, I really enjoyed the Adventure games, and a lot of other 3D Sonic games. That being said, this is not one of them. It was Sonic's first step into 3D (Well, technically) and it was...well, here's the review.
Graphics
Let's get what's probably the least important aspect out of the way, the graphics. To be honest, this game's graphics aren't terrible, but they're not great either. The game claims to be in a 3D perspective, but it’s really just an isometric point of view. For those of you who don’t know what isometric means, you can look at a few other examples, Q*Bert and Marble Madness, but it’s pretty much just 2D when looked at from a view looking diagonally down. It’s tough to explain, but just look at the game, you’ll know what I mean. Anyway, the sprites for Sonic, the Flickies and some of the enemies look ok, but the sprites for Tails and Knuckles look especially bad, to me anyway. The levels do look pretty good, but these compliments won’t save the nightmare.
Sound
I must say, the music in this game is simply amazing! It’s probably, no scratch that, it IS the best part of this game. I really like Green Grove’s music as well as just about every other zone’s music. Some of this game’s music was remixed for Sonic Adventure, which makes the tracks so much better. Green Grove was used in Windy Valley, Panic Puppet was used in Twinkle Park, and there may have been others, but I’m not sure. Oh, I almost forgot, the boss them for Sonic 4: Episode 1 was an unused boss theme from this game, but enough about this game’s great music. Let’s move on, shall we?
Addictiveness
This game isn’t exactly one you’re going to want to come back to that often unless you want to show people how bad it is. One of the things that might keep people coming back, other than that, is the music. Then again, you can just look it up on YouTube, can’t you? Another would have to be the level design itself; there are multiple pathways and areas to explore. You might find a shield or other power-up, a Tails or Knuckles special stage, or just a neat little bonus. But even all of this can’t convince me to go back to this game often.
Story
This time, the game’s story is actually explained at the beginning of the game. Eggman has gone to the Flicky Island and kidnapped all of the Flickies, turning them into robots. (Sound familiar?) Sonic was on his way to visit the Flickies and when he found out what Eggman had done, he decided to start freeing the Flickies himself. As you probably noticed, this plot is pretty much the same thing used in the
classic games as well, give and take a few minor alterations. I’m still not quite sure how Tails and Knuckles got there though. Anyway, it’s pretty basic; it’s just there to give you a motivation.
Depth
As I said earlier, the level design is very much catered to exploration, so be sure to go everywhere you can. Some areas contain power-ups or other items. The newest addition to the power-ups however, is the Homing Shield. If you see this thing, grab it and hold on to it for dear life, it will make your experiences with this game a lot easier. So basically, this was the first Sonic game to feature a homing attack.
There are 7 Zones in the game. (8 counting the Final Boss, which can only be accessed by collecting all the Chaos Emeralds) There’s Green Grove, Rusty Ruin, Spring Stadium, Diamond Dust, Volcano Valley, Gene Gadget, and Panic Puppet. (Alliteration for the win) Each Zone has 2 Acts and a boss fight, just like the other classic games. You can also find either Tails or Knuckles as well, however all they do is allow you into Special Stages if you pay them 50 or more rings. (Note: You can pay them over time as well) The Special Stages are probably the easiest out of any Sonic game I’ve ever played. You run across a bridge, collect rings and avoid spikes.
Difficulty & Gameplay/Controls
Since the controls are the main source of difficulty, I’m combining both sections for this review. Since this is a 3D environment, you can make Sonic jog in all eight directions. (Because you’ll never actually run) You can jump using either the A or C buttons. This time, the spin dash is used by pressing the B button. However, controlling Sonic in this game can be a bit of a pain, considering how slippery it is. It’s way too clunky, oh and while I’m at it, you’re controlling Sonic in 3D with a D-Pad. This alone makes the controls just a little more difficult.
(To me, that is) I feel like I have to traverse the world very carefully and slowly because of this game’s control. Another source for difficulty is the isometric point of view. You can look at a jump and swear you made it, but instead, you completely miss the platform. Trust me, this gets really frustrating in later levels.
Overall, I think you should steer clear of this one if you’re not a Sonic fan, believe me, it won’t help. If you’re curious, I won’t stop you, but I think this is probably one of the worst Sonic games ever made, but not quite the worst. I’ve heard that the Saturn version looks better and I may try and check it out for myself if I ever get the chance. The rest of this month will be filled with more Sonic games that I never want to see again. I will be reviewing a few more games this month ending with what I believe to be the worst Sonic game ever created. Until next time, peace!

Sonic evolved into 3D!   MitsuriZX
Sonic 3D Blast is Sonic's entrance to the world of 3D gaming. It is an old game, but it's 3D!(Maybe.). The problem with this game,is that the 3D is not actually in fact 3D. It's just a nice effect to the game that allows you to see Sonic from an isometric diagonal aerial view. But still, this kind of graphics is quite good,it probably surpasses the graphics of many other games on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.
Let-me tell you about the Story : Dr.Eggman is up to no good again,he invaded the Flickies Island, and captured all the Flickies. He trapped those Flickies inside evil robots, and they apparently work as an energy source. Sonic's job is to free all the Flickies from inside the Robots, then he has to guide them to the Warp Ring, where they will be safely sent back to their own dimension. The soundtrack in the stages is not actually bad,it's just repetitive. I should say, this game also has a Sega Saturn and a PC Version, and the soundtrack in those two versions are amazing. But in this game...not so much amazing.
Anyway,It is basically a Sonic Platformer, with a twist : you can move up and down, left and right. This means that the world is much more open ended than most Sonic games. After you successfully rescue some Flickies, all you have to do,is reach the final Warp Ring, which is marked with a "X" beneath it. Once you get there, you finish an act. Once you reach the third act,you have to face Dr.Eggman, and if you defeat him,you will then advance to the next world.
To keep things fresh,Tails and Knuckles also appear in this game, but they're not playable. Once you find them, pay 50 rings, and you will be sent to the Special Stage. In this Stage, you have to collect a certain amount of rings while avoiding spikes. If you manage to complete the challenge, you will be awarded a Chaos Emerald. That's typical for a Sonic game. If you beat the final boss in the final world while you have all 7 Chaos Emeralds, you will be sent to the true final boss,
This game also features some new power-ups and features. There is a shield that allows you to execute a homing attack towards an enemy. To do so,jump, then jump again in mid-air. There are also Dash Spin Pads which allows you to instantly speed up and pass through hard places with ease. There is also this feature that whenever you jump on a spring, there may be somenthing good farther in the air. You can't reach it,but if you have enough Flickies, they will make an attempt to get the item for you.
Once you collect a certain number of Continue Medals, you will get yourself a new, sparkly Continue. As long as you have Continues, you can continue your game, even if you have no lifes. The first worlds are very easy, but the last ones...they tend to be annoyning,or simply challenging. There are many shortcuts and secret areas in this game,it will do you a lot of good if you find those.
Sonic 3D Blast lives up to it's name, being a completely different experience from other Sonic games.I hope you have a Blast with this game,in 3D!Have fun!

Sonic 3D Blast review for the Sega Genesis!   G@mehe@d
Sonic 3D Blast was released in 1996 for the Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn. The game is a technical achievement but the gameplay is mediocre in several ways. Like the fact that Sonic does not run fast is a disappointment, and searching for little birds gets boring quickly but the graphics are crisp and clean and the music is upbeat and at least adds some excitement top the game. Let's take a closer look at this game.
STORY: The story is similar to most Sonic games, but this time it's a little different. Dr. Robotnik discovers mysterious birds called Flickies. They have the power to travel different dimensions through large rings. Robotnik captures them and puts them inside robots to search for the chaos emeralds. One day Sonic goes to Flicky Island where the Flickies are, and he discovers that the his little Flicky friends are trapped inside robots. He then goes to rescue the Flickies and goes to destroy Robotnik. On his mission he must also retrieve the 7 chaos emeralds. He can find them by visiting Tails or Knuckles and giving them 50 rings so that will take you to a special stage. There is a bad ending and a good ending, I'm not going to spoil it for you, because that's something you'll have to find out.
GRAPHICS: The graphics push the Genesis capabilities to limits. With fluid animation, lush scenery and smooth visuals. The one thing I have to criticize is some of the level designs. Some of the level designs do not belong in an isometric game. For instance when you do little tedious jumps, its hard to tell if going to land on the platform or not. Still I like the fluid animations and smooth visuals.
SOUND: The soundtrack is complex and upbeat, and the sound effects are like the original Sonic games. There's not much to say on this section but I will tell you that the sound is great.
ADDICTIVENESS: Unfortunately the game will only really interest the hardcore Sonic fans. The game was not addicting and I got bored quickly. Finding Flickies gets kind of boring after a while and the stages are very long.
DEPTH: Sonic 3D Blast has plenty of long levels 7 zones with 3 acts in each of them. There is also those fun special stages. They could have added a super Sonic. That would have made a motivation for collecting the chaos emeralds instead of the " good ending".
DIFFICULTY: The game is fairly easy but attacking the enemies is a nightmare, and doing tedious platform jumping becomes frustrating. However the controls are solid are easy to get used to.
OVERALL RATING 7
The game has quality graphics and sound, but it gets boring after a while. The game would disappoint people with it's mediocre gameplay but the graphics will impress many.

The Dark Age of Sonic?   KurisuKaname
Welcome to the GOLDEN ERA of Sonic The Hedgehog. The 90s are known as the best years for Sonic Games, but what if I told you that wasn't entirely true? Here is what I call the first "Dark Age of Sonic.", between 1995 and 1998, many bad Sonic Games came out, with a drought of good games, after Sonic & Knuckles. These games include but aren't limited to... Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic R, and this game, Sonic 3D Blast. But is this game really that bad? We shall find out today! Let's go back to 1996 and try out Sonic 3D Blast or as it's known in Europe. Sonic 3D Flickies' Island.
Graphics:
The graphics are pretty good by SEGA Genesis standards. With some cutscenes that are basically just... pictures, with a bit of text underneath. Honestly though..I found nothing that bad. The game is in an isometric standpoint with.... Basic Sprites. Honestly, I don't mind the graphics of this game at all, therefore I'll give it a 6/10
Sound:
Unlike the rest of the game, the sound is pretty dang good. Not as epic as The Sega Saturn Version released AFTER this one. But the sound is pretty much spot on, as expected from a Sonic Game, with my favorite track being the Second Boss Theme (There's two, that basically alternate). Though the final fight theme is...not so good. It's too subtle and doesn't really resemble music. I can see what they were going for but honestly, the fight already fell flat without the lack of a true final fight track. Therefore on sound I give this game an 8/10.
Addictiveness:
This is where things go down hill...The game's not addictive, in fact there's little chance I'll want to go back and finish the game again. It just comes off a bit annoying, like most of my reviews I use the Difficulty Section to describe Gameplay, so I won't plague the review with a long as long can be Addictiveness Section.
Story:
The story... I should rate this higher, but for once in a Sonic Game, it's pissed me off. Here's how it goes. Dr. Robotnik finds Flickies' Island and apparently finds out that The Flickies are a great power source for robots, he then kidnaps and traps them. Nothing new right? (Though I wish they explored the concept of Flickies' Island again) Well here's the thing... I'd be fine with it if I didn't get through with all 7 Chaos Emeralds. To find a mediocre Final Fight, and a EXTREMELY mediocre ending, to which the WRITING made me cringe. "No one messes with my friends, see ya!" That's basically all Sonic says, before the game tells you Flickie Island is at peace, blah blah blah, honestly I think they should have scrapped the text based scenes, like previous sonic games but...NOPE! Either way, not too good, not too bad either, but the ending grinded my gears enough to rate the story a 3/10.
Depth:
Depth... A lot of people who haven't reviewed or haven't read the requirements for depth when reviewing, will rage about my rating for this, because it's a Sonic Game but...it's nothing personal. The game just has no depth, you go find five random enemies (That's right, most stage hazards aren't even enemies), beat them take the Flickies, keep them safe, and get Chaos Emeralds. Chaos Emeralds are a side thing you can get for The Final Fight but... Honestly that's it, not much depth. 4/10. Nothing personal, just not much depth.
Difficulty:
Here we go, this rating may be high but it's not entirely a good thing. Let me explain, the game is originally meant to be played as an isometric game on a D-Pad...that is not only uncomfortable to play, but seemingly impossible, luckily emulators let us use analog sticks but... The game still seems...slippery. You spend a lot of time just trying to find the few enemies in the stage, to then defeat and get Flickies' from, the sad thing is that most of the time, you don't find any enemies, most stage hazards are just....random stage hazards. But of course now that you have flickies following you, if you get hit, they scatter, and any place you get hit, is the WORST PLACE to pick them up, especially when they decide they love jumping around in a pit of LAVA! But the absolute worst part is depth perspective. It's bad. It's terrible. UCK! The boss battles are a mess because I can never tell if Robotnik is low enough to hit, about 9 times out of 10! The special stages on the other hand...They're easy, oh well. But with all of this said, The difficulty gets my rating of...7/10.
Overall:
All things considered, how much did I enjoy the game? How would I rate it after all of this?... This took me a moment, the game's not terrible but it's kinda bad, it's worth trying to see if you like it at least, so I guess I would give this a rating of... 5/10.

Sonic 3D Blast Review   acam

Sonic 3D Blast Review

Time for my review of Sonic 3D Blast (also known in Europe as Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island) for the Sega Genesis. For some background, this game was released in 1996 and was developed by Sonic Team and Traveler’s Tales. My opinion of this game, unlike previous entries, is not high. In fact, this game is a mediocre Sonic title at best. The following review should help explain why.

The graphics score a 10 because they make up one of the few positives that this game has. There’s just something about seeing 2.5 dimensional waterfalls and isometric cliffs that makes me smile for some reason. Sonic, the robots, and the Flickies look okay, but Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik just do not look right. All things considered though, the graphics are certainly the high point of this game.

I really can’t do a full review of this game without talking about the controls. They’re just that irritating! First of all, the game is set on an isometric plane, so the game’s controls are angled diagonally. What that means is that not only would jumping be very awkward for the player, but when you would spin dash, you would bounce around all over the place in a manner reminiscent of Sonic Labyrinth. The scheme really comes back to haunt the player when they’re trying to collect Flickies. This is mainly why difficulty gets an 8.

Sound gets a 9 because it’s so plentiful and lively. The ring, jump, and spin dash sounds are all there. The reason why the score that I gave this category is so high is found in the quality of the music. The music in this game is so good that it is often taken and remixed for inclusion in later Sonic games. Examples of this can be found in Sonic Adventure as well as Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

The game’s depth and addictiveness score a 3 and 4, respectively. I put both categories in this paragraph because they kind of tie into each other. In other words, if a game lacks depth, I am less likely to play it again. Anyway, other than completing the main game and collecting the Chaos Emeralds, there is really not much else to do in this game. Considering this game’s terrible controls, there is no real reason to come back to this game in the interest of improving your score.

All and all, this game is a rare moment of mediocrity at the end of what is remembered as the golden age of Sonic the Hedgehog. Would I play this game again? Occasionally, I would if only to listen to the awesome music.  Well…that’s all I have for you I guess. Until the next post /review.

Sonic 3D Blast Review   Jynx
When you think of Sonic's transition into 3D, you think Sonic Adventure, right? Well, that's just not the case. Sonic's first "3D" game was Sonic 3D Blast for the Genesis. There is a Sega Saturn version, and from what I know it's better. Still not good, but much better. I would review that game, but the Sega Saturn isn't on Vizzed. Hint, hint.
When you start the game, you're greeted with a cutscene that's.........meh. Sure, maybe it was mind-blowing at the time, but this game was released well after Super Mario 64. But, hey, it's the Genesis. I'll give Traveler's Tales some credit.
The story is.......................gooooooooooooooood. So basically, there are these mysterious birds called Flickies and Doctor Robotnik finds them and put them into robots for some reason. I don't know, maybe he just feels like irritating Sonic. So Sonic decides to kill all the robots to free the Flickies. Do robots die? I don't know. The thing that confuses me is that in Japan and Europe it's called Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island. That means that they're on there own island, away from where Sonic lives. So why does he care?
So what you have to do is kil- smash the robots, get the Flickies, put them in the ring, on to the next section of the act, do the same thing, on to the next act, rinse and repeat. Sounds simple, right. WRONG. You see, the game isn't actually 3D. It's in an isometric view. It's basically 2D that gives the illusion of 3D. It's used in other pretty popular games like SimCity 2000 and RollerCoaster Tycoon. But this game is mostly action based. That means it's near IMPOSSIBLE to hit enemies. OK, maybe I'm exaggerating, but still. The isometric view means the camera is so weird. Oh, and the controls suck too. There very slippery, and they use a D-Pad. So if you're gonna play, not that you'd want to, play on the Saturn with an analog stick controller.
The music actually isn't that bad. Heck, the Green Grove music is iconic. I actually have no more to say about it.
So Sonic 3D Blast is not a good game. It suffers from slippery controls, horrible camera, and a stupid story. Sonic 3D Blast gets a 4.7 out of 10. Lesson learned. No action game should have the camera of a game with and isometric view. Except Super Mario 3D World.

Sonic 3D Blast - More Properly Titled, Sonic 3D Bore.   EmosewaRepus
The year is 1997. It was official. Magazines, news, and the entire Sonic the Hedgehog fan community was abuzz with hype. Because the next iteration in the iconic video game series had been announced. There were trailers, articles in popular gaming magazines, and the game looked amazing. It wasn't just amazing, it was breathtaking. It was completely unique, and it would be the hedgehog's first journey into the third dimension. It was... Sonic X-Treme, for the Sega Saturn.
There's alot of history behind Sonic X-Treme, such as it's early test version called "Sonic Mars" that was developed for the Mega Drive... and I'd love to go into all of that, but that's not what this is about, so I'm just going to cut to the chase. The design team, headed by Michael Kosaka, was not having a good time developing the game. SEGA demanded that the game be available by the upcoming Christmas holiday season, to be accompanied by the cartoon's christmas special (An X-Treme X-Mas) but that was not enough time. With constant script reworkings and engine switches, the game was dissapointingly cancelled.
But Sega still needed a Sonic game for the holiday season. And they still wanted 3D. And... they got it. But it was a load of crap. Welcome... to Sonic 3D Blast, known in other countries as Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island. Also note that upon X-Treme's cancellation, the Christmas special was renamed Sonic's Christmas Blast. The change was soul-crushing for many Sonic fans. Because they all knew from early on that 3D Blast could never live up to what was going to be Sonic X-Treme, and it probably didn't, based on early demos for the game that can be downloaded on to your PC right now.
Sonic 3D Blast is a deadly combination of poor concept and poor execution. Basically, the game revolves around Flicky's Island, where small, mysterious animals taken from SEGA's early 80's arcade game "Flicky" (that also made an appearance in Sonic's first title, 1991's "Sonic the Hedgehog") live. But they are in danger, and they've been turned into robot slaves. It's now your responsibility to destroy the robots, free the flickies, and guide them to the magic ring that somehow means their salvation.
Not only is the plot bad, but it's a DIRECT COPY of not only a pre-existing Sonic game, but Sonic's FIRST game. It pretends to be new and different, but it' actually a remake. Or rather, a de-make. This was a horrible decision on the production team's part, because now Sonic 3D Blast has to live up to the original game- something that no game since has been able to do. Sonic 3D Blast takes out everything that made the original game fun- it took out the platforming, it took out the addictive gameplay, and what you're left with is basically a polished turd.
Basically, you run around a 3D world stomping on baddies copied from the original games, and rescuing the cute little animals contained within. You then guide them towards a magic ring, where you drop the animals in and move on to the next stage. Then you lather, rinse, and repeat. You essentially do the exact same thing, over and over again over the course of 14 stages. Now, keep in mind, this gameplay is already tiring by the end of the first stage. I want to puke just thinking about having to defeat all 14 stages... which I actually DID in order to give the game a fair review.
If there's any one redeemable quality, it's the graphics. They far surpass any other game on that system. But it does not justify the price of 20 Viz. If you want pretty, shiny graphics there are plenty of other options on the RGR. Look at games for the N64 or the Sega CDX. NOT at the Genesis. So now that you've heard me rant about this game, why don't I hop on over to the main points of an RGR Review.
DIFFICULTY: 6
I can hardly call this game difficult, because it isn't. The only truly difficult aspect of the game is trying to find all of the Flickies. What earned the difficulty score of 6 was how difficult it is for you to sit through the entire game without smashing the keyboard against the desktop in frustration. How difficult it is to tolerate the irritating controls, and the repetitive, stupid gameplay. How difficult it is see the words "Sonic 3D Blast" anywhere after playing that game without my eyes melting at the sheer horribleness of this game. It sucks. THAT. MUCH.
DEPTH: 5
Okay, so 5 is a pretty decent score, but depth in the case of this game is *NOT* a good thing. Because don't get me wrong, it takes awhile to beat... but it' boring as hell. Therefore the longer they make this game, the worse that the turd known as Sonic 3D Blast smells. 14 stages of pure stupidity.
STORY: 1
I think I made it pretty clear what I think about the story. It's uninspired. It was ripped off of something else and the story wasn't that good to begin with.
ADDICTIVENESS 0
I swear, I laughed by arse off when I was trying to select the Addictiveness score from the drop-down menu. I had to give it a 1 because you can't go as low as zero, but if I could rate it a zero, I would. It was barely addictive enough for me to want to play the whole thing let alone play it again.
GRAPHICS: 8
As much as I hate, hate, HATE this game... the graphics ARE impressive. It makes full use of the technology that exists with the Genesis and graphics-wise, it is far superior to any other Genesis game I've ever played. So I gotta give the game chops on that one.
OVERALL: 2
This game is boring, stupid, repetitive, a knockoff, and it's just all-around bad. Don't waste your time on this stinker.

At the "Press Start" screen, press B, A, Right, A, C, Up, Down, A (Baracuda), then press Start. The level select menu will appear when you begin a game.

This game is like a mix beetween wat SM64 would've looked like if Nintendo didn't care about graphics crossed with Kirby's Epic Yarn REAPETITIVE!!"We got the mmagic yarn!" line (3 thumbs down man)

This game could have not been there was somthing called the Saturn (Sega Saturn) and it could have been called "Sonic Xtreme" but it was cancelled because it wasnt able to compete with SM64 and Crash
