Slayers (translation) Game Description

"Slayers" is based on an manga series of the same name (also known as Lina the Teenage Sorceress). The heroine of the manga (and of the game) is Lina Inverse, a seventeen-year-old girl who can use magic and is also proficient with the sword. Lina particularly likes money, and often robs rich people and hunts for treasure. She also has a sense for justice - if a village or a town is in trouble, Lina will do anything to protect it and to fight the bad guys! In the game, Lina is knocked down after a fight against mysterious attackers, and is found by the inhabitants of the nearby village. The trouble is, she can't remember anything! When she meets her long-time companion Naga, their first objective become to investigate the goblin attacks on the population, but Lina's ultimate quest is to regain her memory and to find out who or what has attacked her.

The game is a traditional console-style RPG with towns, dungeons, random enemies, and turn-based combat viewed from first-person perspective, in a Dragon Warrior fashion. The characters can attack physically or use special attacks. Lina can also cast various magical spells. You cannot travel on the world map, but "jump" to various locations instead. The game features anime-style cut scenes.

Slayers (translation) Review by: DARKANINE - 8/10

The slayers reveiw(snes)
Notes before the reveiw-
I played a different and MUCH better translation
I haven't beat the post game yet
I'm not a huge fan of the anime

Ah the slayers its a interesting game based on a pretty good anime about a group of adventures trying to slay monsters to get gold as well as save the world from the monster of the week

Story-7
The story is about Lina inverse, the main heroine of the anime she is knocked out in the middle to nowhere with of course, amnesia she is then took into a village by a man who then makes her kill goblins and then a hydra where she meets with Connie and Naga who minor characters from the OVA's as you go through the game you learn that a lot of people hate you or are scared of you for a unknown reason near the end of the game you find out that your Lina is...a...ROBOT! well something like that more like a golem or something and you find the real Lina all and all the story was interesting with quirky dialog that feels very much what you would hear in the anime
My main issue with the story is the main characters of the anime feel almost show horned in
Gourry the second main character(and my favorite "bada**" character) isn't in the game till near the end...very near the end and Zelgadis my second favorite character doesn't join you're party till the second-to-last boss...*facepalm* I should also mention this game uses a quest based progression style of story telling, one guy makes you do a quest after its done you get a cut scene telling where you need to go next, sorta like FF3 it should be noted that enemies don't drop gold or even items so the only way to get gold is the quest

Gameplay-8
Its pretty basic turn based battle with a symbol based choose command (again played a different and better translation)which can be a little annoying at first but quickly becomes basic especially since characters will just be doing basically the same thing each battle
Lina(fake)-Attack/fire ball/ranga blast
Lemmy-Chaos slash
Amelia-Defense lower/Resurrection
Zelgadis-Ra tilt
Real Lina-Dragon slave
Gourry-nealing slash
ect
It should also be noted that resurrection heals 9999 HP and only uses 10 MP

Graphics-8
The sprite work isn't compelling but does the job I suppose Lina looks like Lina Gourry looks like Gourry, but the enemy design is actually really good enemies look really in-place in the slayers universe, the overly cartoony mixed with threatening anime design its great, one of the cool features is the characters in battle portraits change on certain events such as take damage, attack or die

Difficulty-5
The game was rather easy with the basic strategy of lower defense+spam attack since no character has a low attack stat, even the support characters have decent attack oh and all your final party characters(amelia, zelgadis, gourry and real Lina)start on level 99 so the only person you need to level grind is Fake Lina,Lemmy and Slyph which is nice

Music-7
I ambit,I don't remember any music from the game but none is painful so I guess it's not bad

Depth-7
The game is fairly long shorter then FF but around the perfect length I guess, since I was starting to get a bit bored of it before the final boss and the game has a meaty post game with the true final boss, one of the cool aspects though is the country system, each country sounds like they could be countries with names like the coastal union or the kingdom of seirun

Addictiveness-8
I was hooked early on but it suffers from LOOK AT THE GUIDE syndrome which hurt it also the final dungeon made me wanna quit since it was a 8 floor maze with kinda strong monsters but still a pretty addicting game

Over veiw-
Don't play the translation in the RGR its terrible download the Matt's messy room translation
also you may need to know a little bit about the anime,at least the first arc since characters like Gourry and Zelgadis are a bit shoe horned in but still its a fine game that is very underrated

Uh... doesn't seem to load back up after you save... plus the untranslated saving/loading system is a pain.
