Shark! Shark! Featured Review

Shark! Shark! Review by: GenesisJunkie - 8/10

Shark! Shark!
(Overall) Shark! Shark! was released in 1982 for the Intellivision and is one of the very few original games made for the console. A good majority of the games made, not just for the Intv but for all consoles of the time are just rip offs of other console games or arcade classics. Intv had very low expectations for this game, they put it out thinking it would be a fun game for the young kids. To their surprise Shark! Shark! became one of their best sellers and debatable the best game for the console.

I hope you are in the mood for sea food, and you better not save room for dessert! In this game you are a very tiny fish in a big fish's wold. You have to eat the fish that are smaller then you to grow and try not to get ate by the big fish. The biggest baddest fish in this pond is the shark. He is big, black, and very, oh so very hungry! So eat up and try to keep your tail fin out of the mouth of a large ugly fish that wants nothing more then to have you over for diner.

Shark! Shark! has been ported to consoles like the XBox 360, PS3, and a ton of Plug 'N' Plays. This game has seen more Flash game clones then any other. Anyone that plays alot of Flash games is sure to run into a clone of Shark! Shark!.

I give Shark! Shark! an overall of 8, but we will talk about that more at the end.

(Graphics) The graphics are very good in Shark! Shark!. There are quite a few different different colors in this game.

The background is water (of course, what else would you want it to be?), there is a sea floor with some plant life and bubbles that come up from the ground every little bit. everything looks very crisp and colorful.

What color are some of the fish? You are yellow, there are blue, yellow, pinkish (maybe red), brownish and the shark is black.

You can tell what most of the fish are, which seems to be a rare thing when talking about games from this time. There are lobsters, jellyfish, and seahorses just to name a few

Now, I do have one problem with the graphics in Shark! Shark!. Would you like to know what it is? Why in the world is the shark black? I don't think I have ever seen a black great white shark, have you? The shark should have been ether white or grey but its black.

If you can get over black sharks, the game has great graphics. I  give it a 9.

(Sound) If you play alot of games from this generation then you can probably guess what it sounds like. There are really only two sounds in the game. One when you eat a fish and one when the shark is getting ready to come out and when it is on screen.

It really has average sound effects for a game from this time. If sound is the most important thing to you in a video game then this game and most of the games made in this generation are not for you.

If you need some tunes to go with your game, find a fast song that you like and pump it up in the back ground. I like to play Rise Above by Black Flag when I play.

Like I said before the sound is average, it gets a 5.

(Addictiveness) I could play Shark! Shark! forever. This game will get you hooked (fish pun lol).

The game is very simple and easy to play. Being easy to pick up and play and being a blast really makes for high addictability. You just want to keep getting bigger and bigger and try to beat your high score, its so hard to put down!

Really if you are a fan of arcade style games you should have no trouble playing this game all day long. I give it a 10. Perfect score, good job little yellow fish!

(Story) There is no story for this game. Do you really need one for a game that is about a fish that eats other fish?

Ok, you say you need a story? You are a gold fish that is dropped into a lake that is full of big scary fish. You have to eat your way to the top of the food chain and make your way back home to your nice little fish bowl. Is that good enough for ya?

Really most games from this time don't have stories, I don't count off any points for not having a story for these kind of games.

(Depth) There is not a whole lot of depth. There are only a few different fish and one screen. Yet again this is common for games from this time.

Shark! Shark! lacks a bit in depth but really makes up for it by being so fun. Depth gets a 5.

(Difficulty) Its not a safe place for such a small fish and you will find that out very soon if you don't swim fast! At first the game is hard because most of the fish are so much bigger then you and there are not many fish to get to grow. After you start growing the game gets easier and easier.

Shark! Shark! has a very good amount of difficulty. It is hard enough to keep playing and not to much to make you give up if you die. If you swim fast and watch out for the shark you will be ok.

I give difficulty a 7. For me 7 is the perfect score. Not to hard, not to easy.

(End) Shark! Shark! is a true classic. This game has been almost forgotten over the years though. It has some problems but what game doesn't?

Any fan of this era of video games should give this game a try. Even if you are not a fan of the golden age of video games you should still at least play it once. It really is a game that is fun for the whole family.

If you can look past its little problems, this is the perfect game. I hope you have enjoyed the review. Remember keep and open mind and an open mouth but just watch out for the shark!
