Secret of Mana is just one of those classic RPGs that breaks the mold on the genre with the introduction of fresh and new ideas. You begin as a young boy from a small village named Potos, and as you are having some mischievous fun with your friends one day, you end up falling from a ledge. You are able to find an efficient path back to your village, however you discover that it is blocked by tall grass. Nearby, you discover a seemingly useless sword that you decide would be sufficient enough to cut through the grass so that you can return to town. Little does the boy know that claiming the sword has triggered a series of events that would change his life; and alter the fate of the entire planet forever.

Gameplay: 8/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
One of the first RPGs ever to feature real-time combat, Secret of Mana has paved the way for countless other RPGs of its genre. The overall functionality of the game works great, and you are able to choose from a variety of magics and weapons to suit your playing style. You are also accompanied by two other characters in which you can customise their combat stances, but it is also possible to have a friend play along with you. This was another major breakthrough in the genre, as there had never been any notable RPGs for a console that were anything other than single player at the time. The storyline is fairly generic, and although there are a few surprises, it mostly sticks to a linear and predictable plot. Regardless of the storyline, the game offers a decent amount of personalization and delivers challenging tactic situations that require quick reflexes. Although the gameplay style fails to achieve its full potential, the open-ended playability is enough to keep you grinding until the end.

Controls: 4/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
The only word I can use to describe the controls is 'forced'. Despite the intuitive battle system, it is easy to lose footing during combat by getting in the way of obstacles and other characters. In order to switch between weapons and magic types, you have to maneuver through a series of menu wheels for all three characters individually. Even though you can control the combat style of your party members, the artificial intelligence seems off balance, and they can often pose more of a hindrance than support. Switching between menus while trying to fight a battle in real-time can get frustrating very quickly, with the added frustration of trying to keep up with your party members while you are at it. The frame rate lag from excessive animation during large battles is no consolation to the issue, and without progressive grinding the enemies can easily come to overpower your entire party as you advance. If you do plan on playing the game all the way through, I suggest you prepare to invest a lot of time and patience.

Graphics: 7/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
The graphics appeal to the same classic style one would expect from an SNES game, but the artwork tends to be more colorful and vibrant than what one may be used to with this genre. The slight anime-style sprites and settings really seem to compliment the overall theme of the game quite well, and are an important addition to the gameplay experience. My only issue with the graphics is that they are sometimes recycled throughout the adventure, and the resolution quality is poor in certain areas. Still, they were well implemented considering the generation in which the game was created.
<><><><><><><><><><>
Sound: 7/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
The music scores are well composed, and in most instances suit the theme of the game well. The sound effects are in sync with player action, and provide a pleasant addition to battle and menu navigation. However, as you continue farming experience in the same areas for extended amounts of time, the music becomes repetitive. Regardless, it is still appealing to listen to and proves to be somewhat memorable.
<><><><><><><><><><>
Overall Score: 7/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
In conclusion, Secret of Mana is a fun and addictive Action/RPG worth playing for those familiar with its genre. It can take some getting used to, and the dialogue can be bland, but the experience is still worthwhile. If you are able to play this game with a friend, it can be confusing at first, but I find that the sense of teamwork and companionship exceeds the effort. Although this particular game in the series is mediocre in comparison to its successors, it is still noteworthy. I would recommend Secret of Mana to anyone interested in playing a decent hack-and-slash adventure in their spare time.

This beautiful, classic action-RPG is unfortunately more flawed than fans will admit   bsnowotter
First of all, I want to admit upfront that while this is the sort of review that could potentially cause upset feelings from die-hard fans, it is my sincere opinion that because of the epic greatness of this game and also because of its strong nostalgia-factor, some of its flaws are swept under the carpet, and it is those flaws I want to draw some attention to.  It's time we take Secret of Mana off its pedestal, examine it a bit more critically, and admit there are some areas where it missed the mark.
But first, let me acknowledge the game's strengths:  Possibly the best soundtrack in videogame history, the best cooperative action-RPG for the Super Nintendo, a great story, a great world to explore, great touches of humor, and a deep combat system including helper characters controlled by decent AI, a deep magic system, and gorgeous graphics.
So what are my gripes?  First and foremost, the game-play baits and switches on the player, it promises a cooperative RPG experience, but often boss fights incentivize the player to repeatedly pause the game, choose which magic spell to unleash, select the target of the magic spell, and unpause the game only long enough to watch the magic spell be unleashed.  When the magic animation is over, the player pauses the game again and the cycle repeats.  If you have two players at controllers while this unfolds, one player will probably be stabbing at the boss only to have his experience be repeatedly and annoyingly interrupted by the magic-user.  What was promised to be an action RPG feels more like a turn-based series of magic spells.  This cycle would be eventually ended if not for the ability to refill one's magic meter, allowing the boredom to continue.
My second complaint is admittedly even more minor, and it has to do with the hit detection and the special technique system.  First of all, there is a percentage-based combat system which makes performing a combo on an enemy impossible, after each hit the player is forced to engage in a hit-and-run pattern, waiting for his strength to refill to 100%.  If the player wants to add even more time-wasting to this already slow system, he may charge his special technique gauge.  Special techniques often consist of multiple attacks strung together.  The only problem is that these attacks do not chain themselves together into a combo reliably, and the most one can hope for is to lump more damage into a single attack.  Where is the temptation to do so if in order to use this attack, one needs to run from the enemy even longer than normal?  You would probably beat the enemy quicker if you just attacked at 100%, rather than wasting time charging and reducing your walk speed.
Thirdly, the hit detection often seems wonky, and enemies may be struck with an extremely unrealistic delayed reaction, when the player swings his sword and a few seconds later, when the enemy is ready to react, it bounces backwards and damage is displayed.  This is yet another absurd occurrence that yanks the player out of the otherwise immersive experience yet is ignored by gushing fans who rate the game a 10/10 when in fact it falls somewhat short of that lofty rating.
If you haven't played the game, by all means do so and you will probably love it, but be warned it may not be as perfect in every way as you have been led to believe by the two other reviews I read on this site.

Secret of Mana Review   M4g1cW4rr10r
The SNES was kind of like the breaking moment when RPGs were made. Sure, there were a few on the Nintendo Entertainment System already, but there were quite a bit here that almost make up a fraction of all SNES games. Now, back in 1993 before Square and Enix joined together, Square created a well known RPG for the Super Nintendo called Secret of Mana. But there's probably a sepearate half of you that don't know Secret of Mana between Square's numerous amount of RPGs. However, one way or another, I've heard some bad stuff about this game. Just what lies behind the box that holds the game? A cartridge, sure, but I mean the issue. I guess let's just figure out for ourselves.
Gameplay:
At the start of making your character's name, you notice some letters look the same, numbers as well. This is ridiculously annoying, but the stupidity doesn't stop there. You notice there are quite a lot of obstacles obstructing your path. And since they look a lot like the background, this isn't fun. You also notice that in this game you cannot swing wildly with your weapons. You must wait until your energy is charged 100% to attack again, otherwise your damage will be reduced dramatically. But before I get into more, let me explain what's going on. You and some people go outside the village looking for treasure, when you fall down the waterfall and find it. Once you return to the village, you start getting bullied by the guy who took you out with him from the village looking for the treasure. Because, you know, when you don't know what to do, blame the guy who pulled the sword you were looking for. It makes a great antagonist. Then you go and fight your first boss, Metal Mantis. You realize very quickly that he combos you with heavy damage before you can even get back on your feet. Thankfully, you cannot die in this fight, but it just seems to stupid to have a boss you can't defeat, yet the game deliberately lets you win.
After you defeat this 'epic boss,' you're banished from your village. I'm really starting to think that kid is the antagonist of this game... you can now never return to your village, because why? Apparently you'll be followed by monsters if in the town. Because cute little bunny rabbit slimes are so threatening. Don't they have any weapons? You get more weapons and partners along the way that you can change how they act, but I'll think I'll just talk about the controls and let you figure out the rest yourself. When you open up your menu, you have a ring menu that shows your weapons, but not your other stuff. To find these, you must press up or down. Now, while this doesn't seem like a problem, they give you no indication whatsoever. Some arrows or something would be nice. The controls feel awkward. Whenever you fight, your attacks randomly hit or miss, and you just roll around without any reason why. When you try to dash, you can only go straight, and there's barely a reason to do so with all the twists and turns and obstacles. Like I mentioned, enemies can combo you to death in mere seconds if you're not careful. If you're unconscious, consider yourself dead, as you'll take more damage when in this state. The areas are very well designed and nice to look at. One thing that really bothers me though is whenever you enter a new area, the game freezes for two seconds then starts the music. Ugh, let's just get this over with.
Graphics: 9
The graphics look good, but I hate how letters and numbers look the same on the stat menus, and the obstacles blending in with the background.
Sound: 9
The music is very reminiscent and nostalgic, but again, I cannot stand how the game pauses for a few second to load the music whenever you go to a new area.
Addictiveness: 6
Unfortunately, this is one of those games where you have to grind a certain room for about 5 hours to beat just a single boss. I don't like doing this, but if you don't do it, you will die. And this is one of those games that start you from your last save point from the menu, with no continue.
Story: 9
The story is about how a hero wielded a legendary sword known as the Mana Sword and slayed the evil of this land, but now it's returned, or something along those lines. Along the way, you must restore the sword's power in order to defeat this evil.
Depth: 8
You can upgrade your weapons and magic separately for each character, which I thought was pretty cool. I also liked the ring menu's style and all the customization you could do for technical stuff.
Difficulty: 8
Like I said, the controls are very irritating and hard to get the hand of, and I especially don't like how the bosses can defeat you without any trouble, no matter how strong you are. All you need to know is everyone and everything in this game wants your head on a silver platter. You will have to constantly grind to achieve victory in this game, and even if you choose to use revives on your allies, revival items aren't cheap in this game.
OVERALL: 8.1
Don't get me wrong, I like this game, but it just has those issues that really take you out of the game and make you want to throw down your controller in rage. Secret of Mana went on to be it's own series, but that's besides the point. Until next time, I leave you with this review.
Do YOU want me to review a certain game?
PM me for suggestions!

Secret of Mana... The role playing game that blew everything else out of the water. (With a lot of help from Final Fantasy....) You play the role of a Boy who found a legendary sword and has to save the world!!! (duh) This was originally made for the snes CD add-on but Nintendo cancelled that and left CDs for the 6th and 7th generation. And the 6th generation had!!! uh we'll get to that when davideo releases a Gamecube emulator in 2020. So you are actually playing a game that had about 40% cut out from it. So on to my review... This game has amazing graphics for the time. However, if you can max it out and its widescreen... well it has more of a 8-bit feel to it. The music is great but gets annoying as all tracks are pretty much reused. The game is very addicting with simple to understand controls. The story could use a little polish but otherwise is great. The depth of it is just amazing. With such an open world to explore. However the game would have had a 3 in difficulty if not for Spiky Tiger and the Mantis from the beginning. Overall though Secret of Mana has much to give. Now if only Seiken Densetsu 3 was released in the US... we'll get to that another time.

Secret Of Mana Review^.^   deggle
Hey guys it's me with another review on one of my favorites on the snes so let's get started
Graphics 9: This games graphics were really cool looking like when you see a waterfall it would run down perfectly there were no glitchy things going on. All of the monsters looked well made and had their own expressions when attacked or not like the rabbits smile and look as if they are about to cry when they get attacked. All f the bosses looked very epic and some even weird and creepy. Every area you could explore was very nice too see it was like you were in the game looking at the things your character was seeing ranging from castles to dungeons and caves. Overall the Graphics were a big part in this game.
Sound/Music 10: The beautiful soundtrack in this game was too good to be true. The music in this game in general fills up the surrounding environment to seems like you would hear that music playing if you went to a place like that. Every area had it's own fun/sad music playing to fill up the mood there was no battle theme so instead the area theme played correctly with that type of place and song played perfectly while fighting monsters. The boss theme was really awesome while fighting with a boss theme would make you anxious (Well it did for me) and scarred on what too do. Most of the villages had a fun filled theme which made them fun to go to. Even buying items and Sleeping had their own great melody with them. Overall without the music this game would be really missing the fun and would be boring.
Addictiveness 9: I would play this game a fourth time cause it was so much fun listening to the story fighting in all of the fun action filled battles. All three of the characters have great stories on how they met up and how to you can you can get them. Completing all of the quests was a really fun part. And traveling to every different piece of the continent was grand.
Story 10: Okay so the story starts out with you naming a your character it's always a male so for now i'll call him Derrick(the name i always give him) So you start off with Derrick and two other boys from a village searching a treasure so your crossing a log over a waterfall and you fall in. You find a sword and it tells you something important you go back to the village they want to banish you cause you now own the Sword Of Mana which was protecting their village and now monsters are attacking. One of the kids with you get's angry and starts attacking you and you both fall into a pit. Which has your first boss battle after defeating the monster you are banished and you meet a knight who tells you to find this place. Okay just saying this story-line was amazing I loved it so much
Depth 9: This game offers a ton of Exploring, Quests, and Summon Hunting if you don't know what Summon Hunting is it's when you search out looking for potential spirits who will help you on your journey giving you the ability of magic. There aren't many Quests in this game but when you do get one you'll have a blast completing it. a fun thing that the games gives is the Weapon Level system too level up a Weapon you need an orb that corresponds with that kind of weapon it transforms the weapon until Lv.9 when it has full power and is really strong. To find orbs you need to find special chests are do special things or just fight a boss for one. This game gladly offers you tons of things to do and play always accept.
Difficulty 8: Even though this game seems pretty easy from the start it gets really annoying right after the first boss fight which i suggest you get to level.3 before you fight him cause he is hard. and the game get pretty obnoxiously hard after that fight with him. the normal monster will still be pretty easy but then all of a sudden you will engage a trap battle with really hard monsters that will most likely make you waste all of your items or kill you really fast. So note when playing this game try to level up as much as you can because this game is really hard and most monster and boss fights will destroy you in seconds before you can do anything.
Overall total: I suggest this game to all ages 12+ for you to get the concept more easy. This game is co-op so you can play with two of your friends as well. Naming your character if you want the old default names Boy main character Randi   Girl either Marle or Purim and the second male asset is Sprite Popoie or Wedge
So hope you all enjoyed this review I know I did writing this.

This game is a decent game.  I did not get far but the game was fun while I played it.  The graphics were good for a old game the music in my opinion were godly,  the story was fun especially getting the sword,  the difficulty was hard like the big monster, the overall game it not very addictive that is why I did not play it very long.  Overall the game was fun not very catchy but since I love swords and rpg's I had to try it and I liked it I guess...  Overall I would recommend this to anyone because maybe they will like it more then I did.

pretty decent   mscoral
This game is like i said in my title, pretty decent. The overall game play is pretty addicting. its slow at first, but just hang in there and you'll get to the fun hack and slash eventually. The fighting isn't turn based, making it pretty addicting, because it doesn't take up too much of your time when you just want to complete a quest. The story line is unique in some ways, but also repeats a little bit from other story lines, including the very popular mana structure. The difficulty in this game is in the beginning, pretty easy, but it gets much harder as you go on (obviously). I died the first couple times trying to get out of the village you start out in. The controls to access your inventory took some getting use to, but eventually you will get the hang of it. Overall, i give this game a 9.4.

@rickyroo. Both games are good, be more tolerant... If I had to choose which game I like better I'd probably choose this one, but Chrono Trigger is nice too.

If anyone ever asked me, "What video game would you want to live in?" I would either choose this game or Chrono Trigger.

You can actually string together combos in this game by switching characters and attacking before the damage shows up. If done correctly the damage you see will be the total of all 3 character attacks.
