The Santa Clause 3 - The Escape Clause Review by: Eirinn - 4/10

Not bad for a Santa Claus game
Okay, so Games with Christmas themes don't have the best record of being great, and games featuring Santa Claus as the main character have an even worse record, but they say there's an exception to every rule, and I have set out to find that exception. And so it is, that I found and tried The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. A game based on Disney's third installment in the "The Santa Clause" movies, and as we all know, a game based on a movie is rarely good, which means the odds of this game being good are practically non-existent, right? Christmas Game + Santa character + movie game = yikes. But hey, this could be that one real exception! I mean, it is based off of the semi-entertaining third installment in a so-so triology that stemmed from an awesome movie (boy, that went down hill fast, eh?), so maybe some of that holiday goodness will rub off on it.

The game starts in the North Pole (Shocker, I know), and since I was utterly unimpressed with the movie and so only saw it once, I can't recall the name of the Village, therefore, I shall hereafter refer to it as "Christmas Town", because it fits, and well, "Christmas Town" just sounds cool.

Anyway, you start in Christmas Town, and you must travel from point A to point B without depleting your health meter. Pretty basic stuff, or it would be, were it not for the twist! The twist is...well, come to think of it, there is no twist. I guess it is that simple.

However, as with any good platformer (and every bad one that I can think of as well), there are those pesky items scattered everywhere, that you really should try to collect, but you don't have to. Mario has his coins, Sonic has rings, and Santa has his Milk and Cookies. Surprised? You really shouldn't be, it's Santa we're talking about after all.

Then there are the enemies! Who could possibly hate Santa Claus you ask? Isn't it obvious? Snowmen! Yes, evil Snowmen throwing snowballs. Huh, maybe that wasn't so obvious after all.
There are more than the legendarily fiendish snowball launching Snowmen though, there are also Ice Bats(?) and toy robots that attack the elves, among a few others.

Finally there are the side quests. Mini-games, if you will. The first has you controlling an elf who must gather all of the parts needed to assemble a toy or some contraption. These items however, once completed, never factor into the game in any way.
Next, you will fly the sleigh, delivering presents to the good little boys and girls, and coal to the bad ones. Now this is the very idea behind Santa Claus' existence, why then does this seem to be such a rare occourance in a Santa themed game? This particular mini-game is where most of your fun will come from in this game, as you get to fly Santa's sleigh, and drop pesents/coal into the houses where needed, while avoiding freezing gusts of wind. Dropping Presents and coal while flying, instead of going down the chimney? Santa must be behind schedule this year. In any case, it's actually an enjoyable little mini-game.

The controls are simple: A button jumps, B button attacks, R button uses a gift you've picked up, and D-pad moves. That's all you really need to know. Now, on to the ratings!

Graphics: 5/10
Average.

Sad to say it, but the GBA is capable of so much more graphically than this game offers.

The sprites are unnecessarily rough around the edges, and lack greatly in variety. The elves all look the same, and there are so few enemies sprites that you end up seeing the same ones repeatedly. The only really decent sprite would probably be the Cocoa that Santa drinks to warm himself up (replenish his health), as it's somewhat animated.

The level designs and backgrounds are what really saved this game from getting a worse score for graphics than it did. The levels actually give the feeling that it's Christmas, unlike many Christmas games that assume snow is enough to achieve a Christmas atmosphere. This game actually looks like it takes place in Christmas Town. The downside being that all of the levels soon begin to look alike, until you get to the final episode or two maybe. Still, there is enough good here that I can overlook that much.

The cutscene graphics of course, are all done in still scene clips of the movie. Now if they only made more sense. But that's a matter of story, not graphics. They look great actually, so add some points for The Escape Clause on that one.

So, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause is pretty much on par with the typical seemingly rushed Christmas game, graphically. Cool with most Christmas game graphics? Then you'll be fine with this one as well, but as a GBA game in general, they aren't impressive on any level at all.

Highlights:
-You managed to read the negative comments on the graphics

-Cutscenes look really good!

-Manages to capture the look of a Christmas story

Sound: 5/10
Average.

I'm being really generous here, but at least the audio isn't too annoying.

The Music is repetitious at best, but at least it's almost decent for an older handheld game. Almost. You may not be turning the music off, but if your speakers are busted, don't worry, you aren't missing too much. This is what I would call 'Take it or leave it' music.

The sound effects are okay, I suppose. Nothing to note, but nothing to fuss about either. I would say they are average, as is the music. The best sound effect would be the "Mmm" that Santa/Scott say each time you grab some milk and cookies, which is good, since you'll be hearing that a lot.

Again, typical stuff. Nothing good, and nothing bad. Perhaps you'd be better off playing some Christmas tunes of your own while playing the game.

Highlights:
-The sound isn't bad or annoying

Story: 3/10
Bad.

The story follows that of the movie, which wasn't that great to begin with, but it wasn't bad either. Maybe I'm just comparing it to the first one too much. In any case, you won't be wowed by this game's story. In fact, if you haven't seen the movie, you probably won't really have much of a clue as to what's going on at all; they really do that bad of a job conveying it. "Oh look, it's Santa! Hey, who's that blue guy? And who on Earth is Laura??" Yeah...you really need to watch the movie first. In fact, there are even nods to the first movie here, which is pretty cool. Still, the lack of story here is a shame, considering there are some twenty-four levels. With that many levels, there were plenty of chances to squeeze in some cutscenes and story segments in general, rather than giving the player a half-understandable clip of movie, and storyline addition every three or four levels. I understand we don't expect much story from a Santa game, but there's no excuse for such confusing and scarce story scenes when you're following a movie's plot word for word. Sadly, there is nothing good to be said for the story here, but that it exists, if only in part.

Highlights:
-There is a story

Depth: 5/10
Average.

There may be several levels, but they all play the same, and, for the most part, they look the same. And with only one mode, there isn't much to speak of by way of depth. One thing it has going for it in this category is the inclusion of the mini-games.

Not much variety at all, but it does have plenty of levels and a couple of mini-games, along with an ability to collect items, and try for 100% completion.

Highlights:
-Mini-games

-Collectable items

Addictiveness: 2/10
Terrible.

I'll probably never touch it again, but as Christmas games go, this one is alright. It doesn't offer much, but you won't be playing it much, since Christmas time only comes once a year anyway. I'll still keep looking for a good Christmas game, and hope that the game industry pulls through for me on this one.

Difficulty: 3/10
Very Easy.

I can't say that I found much of a challenge here at all, but at least it won't cause you to rage or punch your monitor anytime soon. The final (and only) boss fight is interesting, and offers a small challenge, but not much of one. You should beat it in a play or two, and the same goes for the mini-games. In fact, the entire game is pretty much a quick playthrough that you'll beat on your first try. That's a good thing, since we only have a short season to play it in.

Highlights:
-As easy as a Santa Claus game should be

Overall: 4/10
Poor.

Yeah, I have a bad history with Christmas games, and this one failed to come through for me, and provide me with a pleasant Christmas gaming experience. It wasn't all bad though, I enjoyed the sleigh mini-game, and it did manage to keep me entertained for a few minutes at a time, and managed to make me feel like it really was Christmas time. So despite the low score, and lack of good things to say, The Sants Clause 3: The Escape Clause, isn't a total bust. It could be a lot worse, like some other Christmas games out there.

In the end, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, is a mediocre game at best, but if you insist on playing a Santa game, then this one could be worth checking out. It at least feels like a Christmas game, and not just a game with a guy in a red suit, like many other Santa games. Is it worth your time and Viz? No, not unless you just need a Christmas game to play, if so, this one could be considered. And let's face it: most of us do play Christmas games in December, and despite the inavoidable disappointment, we remain gluttons video game punishment. At any rate, the game is what it is, and it sets no higher expectations than it meets. It screams: "I'm mediocre, and I'm Christmas themed!", and that's exactly what it is, and I can respect that.
