Resident Evil 4 Review by: sonicthehedgeho.. - 10/10

"An old rookie returning to the life of madness after so many years"
1998...So long ago.....we've lived through and passed around the work rookie and smile knowing how we've grown from that phase; but, there's on rookie whom can't ever do that no matter how much he tries, and it's the Ex-R.P.D police officer Leon S. Kennedy. It's been a long time since that nightmare in the now desert wasteland  Raccoon City after being called to sterilization to rid the world of the apocalyptic threat of the T-Virus...with that it was though that the underground shady company umbrella had crumbled down after realizations of how critically dangerous they would be to the world after having lowered all stocks in business, they were presumed to  be...dead. 16 years have passed since our experience with that horrendous incident, now we begin a new story with our protagonist now working for the government and sent to a strange land in order to find a certain person. Mysteriously when we enter this village we can tell things don't seem that right about this place and open reaching a villager and almost killed it brings us into what we know as a life-and-death scenario yet again. After so long it's time for our survivor from the Incident beforehand to go and rescue this person while dodging the enemies we'll find along the way. It's time...for another evil uprising and the time to purge it!

 _________________________________________________
   __ Bringing a new looking style to the beloved series after years__/

   It's all too familiar on how the looks of the Resident Evil worlds are like, that old-style camera angle and detailed background walls/flooring *cough cough...burger kong cough cough* but this is the first game in the series that moves away from that format into the more generic third person shooter type mechanics and though it's not a creepy this way to me, there's no way I can deny how beautiful this game looks when playing through level or watching the animated cutscenes. I'm sure you're sitting there drooling on yourself as you wait to find out what I mean so why wait as you'll just feast your hunger out on me so I'll move forward to giving you those examples but be warned just because this is a new format for the way things will look doesn't mean it's lost the scary resident evil feel behind that concrete laying in the corner of the building.

    {Village}

    Ok laugh at me if you will but the village is actually my favorite out of the areas in which you adventure through, most of it because of the scenery as while you're undetected you can see these "Villagers" stacking up hack with a pitchfork and near chicken coops for eggs. It's a nice way to give you a feeling to how this place would be like if the people here were normal (which I'll describe what I mean later on). One of my favorite things in RE4 that you can do is if you see a wooden door you can actually shoot at it and it WILL break apart and be destroyed if shot at too much, simple?, yes even though it's just one little thing I enjoy it a lot as it shows how much a series has grown when most of the time you shoot a door and it will just have bullet hole in it. It's a really nice area to look at and relax in as it reminds me of things you would see in the 1880's with all the wooden architecture, a very lovely area to be around (though sounds strange when you consider what's happening there haha).

    [Graveyard/Church Area]

    Probably my second most favorite area in this game for how mystifying and eerie it is, between the broken tombstones and abandoned church ahead of it. This place just wreaks of wonder and creepy factor mostly for the fact that it's a church setting and you wouldn't think much of it but then you see the rundown look of it and almost prison like feeling behind it due to the fact that it's use by a religious almost satanic type group. You'll be solving puzzles in here between risking your life from those "villagers" that will be waiting for you on the other side of the door. Strange yes but very nice when you get to actually experience it...if you like a misty type atmosphere.

    *Laboratory/*

    One of the more memorable areas as this place reminds me of something you would've seen at the Umbrella Labs with benchtables covered in blood or some even still having corpses on them, and this area also contains one of the more annoying/tough enemies in the game similar to Leech Zombies except even worse. It looks like a mutated human with long claws and "jaws" type teeth and they will take forever to kill if you destroy them by just randomly shooting them as they can regenerate body parts. The creepiest part about them is when you kill them they grow rapidly while pulsating and explode; however, their legs keep moving forward for a while (similar to a chicken running around after it's head is take off).  Very mysterious and interesting for the fact that it reminds you of the past and keeps the fear open.

    This games graphics are still great to me even to this day, of course it's not as beautiful as let's say something like Metal Gear Solid 4 or something that came out much later in the gaming generation. The voice acting has improved even more since Resident Evil 0 and not almost seems flawless which is nice for people whom had issues with that so I can't help but give the graphics a 10 out of 10.

     {New music hues and forms, creating a refreshing and dark soundtrack}

    If you're worried about the music from trailer music or from how the game looks and plays now, I'll tell you, even though it may not live up perfectly to the original 4 games...it's far far FAR from bad to the accompanying gameplay. It's still very ominous and sets the mood straight for the adventure ahead of you and I'll admit even though I only enjoy a few songs on here compared to how much I love from the classics, there are still some I enjoy which I'll describe right now.

    (/) Music and Sounds () (Village)

    As you first enter the village like said above you'll notice the people here aren't normal and will try to murder you right as you're in their sights, and with the rushing and continuous beat it gives you that rush inside of your body like you're actually being chased as you reach for cover in order to attack in safety. While you look for any clues or items that will help you progress through the levels of this land in hope to find the person you're looking for or even find some sign of life in order to find out info on your mission.

       [.] [:][::] Regenerators ]:[ ]:::[ ].[

    Ok to experience this song in its glory you have to play the game or watch part of the game with these enemies because it has a slowly beating tone that gets creepier as the song goes along but then you have the enemy that makes a sound which goes perfectly with the music as well since it has a: "huhuhuheeeeee, huhuhu heeeeee" which sounds like someone who's trying to breath while their throat is sore, clogged, and your nose is stuffed up. It makes it sooo bad and messed up to hear especially if you play the game around midnight with the lights off.  just...ugh getting quillshivers when I think about it but it works well for the kind of game that you're playing so thumbs up!

    **Saving Area/**

    Everyone remembers the feeling when you finally find a saving area, that theme finally comes in and you feel relieved but also kind of worried at the same time (depending on the specific game since some are relaxing or still creepy) and this game fits into the Resident Evil 0 or Code Veronica stands as it is very relaxing more so compared to Resident Evil 2 & 3 as you have a nice constant and peaceful tone and while you listen it almost sounds as if you have an operatic type humming in the background. It's nice to listen to and get away from the horror's that you see and though I don't prefer it over 2 & 3 it's much better than 0 in my eyes so still a great job!

    Once again it seems the sound department has pulled through for the mood of the game, and though it's not as successful as the games prior to it I'd still say it's worth listening to when you play the game so the sound I'd say I could give a fair 7 out of 10.

     [Bring a new meaning of Evil to this same amount of fun]

    If scepticism decides to tear you away from this release with other things this game has been talked about or shown, then the best thing to do is try it out for yourself...sounds simple and some answer that anyone would give you right? True True I won't deny it; but, it's honestly not a lie as when I first saw this game I figured: "eh it's nice  but I miss the original camera angles and fighting" Oh it was such a bad idea to think that it wouldn't be good for those reasons, as it's definitely far apart from the PS games however, this time it's in a good way as it still maintains the gameplay fun that you love but creates a whole new atmosphere for newcomers to this series, between the fighting and the way you look around in areas. The story also creates a well-earn addictiveness value, since it brings back one of our favorite RE characters from the very popular Resident Evil 2...Leon S. Kennedy and you can tell he's definitely changed (and not just in his looks) in the way he acts and fights being more calm and condensed  about his fears and worries for partners so you'll definitely not be bored of this game when you first play through and even several times afterwards as well. Many other characters comes back from older games as well or even just ones that we've heard about, I won't spoil anything for you since that would be cruel though I think I can tell you that one has a Red-dress and the other is a buffed knife-wielding man whom for some reason detests Leon. Now what else besides this could possibly make this a best seller for you? Let's get into that as well.

     ~Extras~

    For games to have a lot of things to do or leave things to earn even after beating the game it makes it a huge seller point as you'll want to play the game more and more for that reason and one of things this game has is lots and lots of unlockables. For example if you beat the game once you'll have the option to playthrough the game again on your save file but this time you can choose between two costumes: "Special" or " Normal" and since I'm a big fan of Resident Evil 2 I always prefer using the Special costume since it's basically a redesign/updated look to his R.P.D costume from the second game in the series, which I LOVE seeing as it gives you that classic feel while playing something completely new. You can also unlock 2 new game modes from beating the game once already one of which is a short mini game and the other is a survival type gamemode which is nice to play if you want break from the normal story mode. Weapon unlocks can also be found inside these games which creates even more playability to be able to test out these new features.

    That's all I can say for the addictiveness so if you want something new but still have a good RE feel behind it or don't prefer the older games and want something new that'll play better for you this should definitely be a great pick up/starting point so I have to say the addictiveness is a 10 out of 10.

    /____ Having to face another disaster with an unlucky cop from before_____

    It's been 6 years since the devastation that occurred in Raccoon City alongside having it being sterilized by government orders, forced to leave the R.P.D our protagonist begins a new journey to find the so called presidents daughter and is sent out to a strange village area in Spain. Following the pathway and coming across the town he enters a home to ask the locals for help on his mission with finding the girl, after a negative dispute from the caretaker in which he tries to kill you, it's decided that you must use any force necessary to make it out of the village in order to continue your search for her. After a short while in game you'll run into some old friends and enemies that will definitely share some words and info for you specifically one woman in red will help you from the village leader making a nice appearance for old time fans. Later on he'll be injected with a virus that will affect him from attacking on individual and can devastating hurt him at random point during his adventure...what will happen to Leon? Can he truly save the presidents daughter and make it out alive? Well pick up that controller and give it a try because you'll certainly be interesting with each footstep inside that you hear. Great job and story so I'll give this one yet again another 10 out of 10!

       |_|Lots of fun, whole new style, still having much to enjoy|_|

    I've already stated a few things that can be earned in this game from doing certain requirements but know I'll go into more reasoning of what those things are in this section. First off we know by now that RE2 can be finished in 2 1/2 hours while 0 can be done in 7 hours....but what about RE4 is it shorter or more page worthy than the past 2 games listed? The answer is that it definitely has more inside the game and it's split into chapters to make the game more complex and interesting, it has 5 chapter usually each with 4 sections and just one of those sections could last a 20min~1 hour or longer depending on how well you know the game or if you've just started for your  first time, this is already a great sign as it shows you won't just beat the game in an hour and think....ok...was that worth the 25 or 30$ that I payed for it? Not only that but this game also includes many secrets and weapons to fool around with: between magnums, mine launchers, or shotguns you'll definitely have a wide variety to chose from so your specific playing style can be satisfied. Now I'll go into more detail about what I said in the addictiveness section.

      !Unlockables!/!

    When I was talking in the addictiveness section I stated that there was a mini-game as well as a survival type mode that could be played once you finished certain requirements and those 2 are called: Assignment Ada and Mercenaries with each one of them sure to be a time sucker when you're needing a rest from your average gameplay on story mode.

     ~~ Assignment Ada ~~

    This is actually a shortened version of an upcoming extra release on the PS2 version of this game called "Separate Ways" where you'd play through the whole game as Ada Wong, a survivor of the Raccoon City Incident. In this version however you're just brought straight into one point of the Separate Way's gameplay and are ask to retrieve 5 plaga samples located around the map and once you've done so you've finished this mode which could take around 20~30min based on your gameplay abilities.

    XX~ Mercenaries ~XX

    This mode is basically a timed shoot up and survival campaign wherein you run around areas located in story mode that are shortened down to arena type style and the entire point is to rack up the largest amount of point in order to achieve a 5/5 star ranking which will net you unlocks (same as the game above). You're given 2:00 to slaughter and earn as much as you can before it goes out and there are Hourglasses you can collect to increase your time remaining or give you a point combo based on how many people you kill in one time. While you play the game Leon is the only person you can play as during the beginning but once you at least get through the levels you can earn each new characters which ranges from: Leon, Ada, Krauser, Hunk, and Wesker. It's fun to play if you want to just attack without having to think about where you need to go or other things.

    As you can probably tell from this huge section there is A LOT to do in this game without it getting tedious or just snoozable so I can't help but deny that it's worth of a 10 out of 10 for depth.

     X_x_X Same fear of death as before when you plow through this quest x-X-x

    What about the difficulty in this game now? We all know that conserving ammo was essential to the success of the previous titles alongside maintaining your health so does this game offer that same effect? Sadly...that question's answer is a negative no as it's chock full of ammo and herbs along the way so you won't really know the feeling of being dragged down with the minimalist amount of health/ammunition possible (unless you're going blazing glory into this game).  However! This doesn't necessarily mean it's lost all of its difficulty factors as there are several points in the game where you could be hanging by a thread due to enemy types and events, like the regenerators that I mentioned before in the sound section.
    But there are also even more enemies that are just as deadly like...oh I don't know...how about Chainsaw Villagers? Yes these are in the game and at points you can even run into a couple of them and if they get to you well then you might as well throw the gun at them and hope it discharges into their eyeball because there's no way to save yourself if they get way too close and attack you as you'll become a pumpkin without it's top on, that isn't enough for you...well then how about Gatling gun enemies which can make you go from a safe green amount of help almost all the way down to red. Lots of surprises on enemies will occur in this game so don't get too cozy with your ammunition just yet. Now....even though I don't really like slamming a game down I'm going to have to bring up a new point here that has made a lot of people detest this game in one way.

    ~ Quicktime Events ~

    Yep that's correct these rotten things that people loathe in today's gaming world were introduced in this game, now you may look at me and say: "well hey...what's wrong with that? it feels good to dodge something and use those buttons at that time to create suspense and a nice view!" to which I can't disagree with you there...but that's for portions in the game like a laser segment where you jump based on what buttons you need to press in order to make it out alive without getting diced like sushi. I'm  personally ok with these sections but it's when we get to a certain point that it falls apart....cutscenes.
    Yes sadly when you watch some cutscenes you'll be asked to do quicktime events which can save or kill you depending on if you hit those buttons, to best use this issue I'll quote a youtuber on this matter "oh cool a cutscene *lays controller down* I guess I'll just leave this here and... *enemy thrusts towards you* ..WHAT holy shotgun pellets! You're kidding me I'm just sitting here watching a movie skit and you're going to throw this at me?" I couldn't laugh and cry more at this segment because it's true but also very sad that this was implemented into the game. Sure it probably had good intentions but I don't believe anytime inside games should you be forced to do button prompts within a few seconds in order to progress through the game.

    Normally when I would've rated this game I would've given it an easy 6 out of 10 for it's difficulty but after that last issues I talked about...I'm going to have to raise it up 1 more on the assessment of "Unfair" difficulty leaving the score with a 7 out of 10 for a "Unfair" segment.

    Now that you've seen this horror are you willing to continue into the fear of death and possible decapitation at the hands of villagers and bosses, or will you throw it aside in order to rescue this woman from all perils and continue home with a mission well done. The only question is...can you survive this horror once more...or will the fears from that incident 6 years earlier shake your comfort of accepting this mission? You'll just have to rush ahead and try your best, and hope this is the last evil you'll face...the last..Residential...Evil. *Drops dagger on floor and shoots front camera on Vizzed* ......Sonic57+Pokefreak2014tm
