Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time Reviews

Overall 9    Graphics 9    Sound 8    Addictive 6    Story 6    Depth 10    Difficulty 8

8.1
An outstanding puzzle-adventure, fit for all ages!   realplayer109
A game is indefinitely a piece of art, created to immerse the player in a bit of experience, deaths, and a sensible story. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time does all three. Released in 2003 near the end of the GBA's life cycle this was a masterpiece containing not only fluid gameplay, however, empowering visuals and sounds unimaginable for the specifications the system upheld.
-------------------------------------------
Please note that my reviews contain three categories: which are Graphics, Sound, Gameplay. If you need extra information on any of the scores given above please let me know and I'd be happy to give you more detail.
-------------------------------------------
Firstly, we will discuss the graphics. They are outstanding, and the animations are completely smooth and show by frame by frame detail of the character itself. Speaking of which, the animations allow for fluid gameplay making the jump cues safe and reliable.
It definitely shows aspects of great delight throughout the entire game. All sprites, including the backgrounds, have some sort of detail visible and generally look interesting enough, though it doesn't divert, or distract your eyes from focusing.
Adding to this: GUI elements have a gracious style to them and often aren't derelict, looking abstract and meaningful and contains subtle differences depending on the character you are playing as. It is a great, and ambiguous feat and it shows that a lot of energy went into the game as a whole.
However, as with all categories, there are flaws. Personally, I believe that the title screen and inventory menus are plain, only showing bare fundamentals with some sprites not even appearing correctly. It looks rushed and rigged. It doesn't seem smooth like sand at all.
Even though that is true, the presentation also matters in this case, and it is clear that the game blows it out of the park. It is very clean and subtle with dialogue scenes containing a huge amount of grace and fixture with concurrent themes of colors throughout the entire game. Completely amazing. It is always cut-throat and never once delivers a poor, unexplainable graphic. (Aside from the ones talked about earlier.)
That is why the game deserves a score of 9 for the graphics.
-------------------------------------------
Next, I will discuss sound.
On a huge amount of GBA games, the sound is a great issue for me, most developers do not care about it and instead use it last minute. However, Prince of Persia is a game done right.
The sound in this game can often be used as audio cues designed for patterns, or events such as opening doors, and collecting items. It can help with fixture and structure in the design of the game while also keeping at a pace.
Adding to this, it builds an atmosphere, using it to fit the theme, and style very well and often has such a good time doing it. Its overly obsessive soundtrack is catchy and hooked on nicely.
Contrary to this, I do feel that some tracks are very rough and edged, and looping is a serious flaw when it comes to switching characters. The musical structure of the songs do not feel valid, especially during boss battles or similar cases. It can really damage an experience.
Overall however, I do agree that it is a widely accepted tone and it honestly drives the game for me, several instances have created suspense, tension, and fear, which is awesome.
This is why the game deserves an 8 for sound.
-------------------------------------------
Thirdly, I will discuss Gameplay.
This is the most important category by far, a good gameplay can often be a saving grace, and suffice to say, the controls on this particular game are pretty tight.
Controls are used in the normal manner where the D-Pad is used to move, A to jump and B to attack. This should be standard on all platforming games. They are easy to pick up, use, and play. A new addition into this game however is the ability to rewind. Rewinding can often be helpful espiecally avoiding the poor game-over and checkpoint system often seen as brutal, but we'll get to that.
The Prince is who you play as (though you will eventually meet Farah, another playable character.) and will have to venture through room after room solving puzzles along the way. As stated before, the mechanics are tight due to the animations being smooth and fluid forcing a wide scheme. The puzzles can be legitimatley hard to solve, though this is mostly because of the sizes of the rooms themselves and finding how to actually perform them.
The Sands of Time is also another aspect of this game. The Sands of Time can be used on peculiar objects, such as statues or beings to cause events. This is very confusing as there is no indication of when to use it or it could be wasted. One thing to note, is that some stages do not allow you to progress without obtaining a Sands of Time item. To be completely honest, it is useless outside of that as well. You are obliged not to use it outside of battle which is really annoying, especially when it is quite powerful.
An interesting concept arises meeting Farah for the first time, and evolving puzzles where both characters are used with their own specific abilites is quite nicely done and the switching is easy using the select button. What I didn't like however was that you were obliged to only switch at certain locations that could've made puzzles a lot easier to complete.
Lastly, I just want to talk about how much I love the idea of the scrolls. What they are is basically collectable mechanics, such as double jumping, sliding, rolling etc. They add achievement and depth to the game while also making collecting them a heroic action.
-------------------------------------------
Overall, I'm giving this game a solid 8.1. It impresses me greatly because of the story and the fact it has a fully automated loading and saving system not present on many games. The gameplay is good, the graphics and sound are even better, albeit at the cost of bland GUI elements, but honestly, you will never find something as unique as it.
Or... at least for now, anyways.
