|Pokemon Topaz (silver hack) Review by: Postman3
This one's a slam dunk!
OVERALL, I would say this is the best Pokémon game on the Game Boy Color System. Something awesome about it appeals not just to me, but all Pokémon trainers. Pokémon Topaz is a stand-alone adventure. There may be a few minor dialog mishaps, but it will not be enough to ruin your game. Do not be put off from playing Pokémon Topaz. Give it a chance and the brilliance of this unique version will reward you.
You first start the game much like Pokémon Silver except your character looks like a cross between LT Surge and an old mad scientist. The hacker restructured many character images including your rival and gym leaders. As for the quality of these graphics, I would say they are on par with Pokémon Silver.
I really like the music and sounds. They are a virtual carbon copy of Pokémon Silver. I have always enjoyed the music in Pokémon games so on my review it always rates a ten. The sound quality is also quite as good as Pokémon Silver is.
I started playing Pokémon Topaz in early July. Then I started playing it every day. Something about this version of Pokémon makes every other game I own take a back seat to it. It was my July game of the month. I did not touch another game until after catching Groudon. Pokémon Topaz is now the game I think about on the way home on the bus. This terrific hack is now my prime gaming endeavour.
It is a little different. The starters are the Generation I selection. I picked Charmander. Squirtle or Bulbasaur probably would have worked better though. There are different "obstacle Pokémon" that block your progress until you battle them. I would suggest catching them because they are strong. The Johto gym leaders have been supplanted by Kanto ones. Misty was especially tough. It took much training to beat her. I do not know what I will find when I reach Kanto though. I will just have to keep playing.
The creator rearranged the first six towns to open up the game a bit. I rather get the feeling this is going to be another long, epic Pokémon journey complete with more surprises along the way.
On one point, this one seems easier than Pokémon Silver does. That would be the Master Balls provided at every Poke mart free. It will not take such a long time to catch a Pokémon now. Catching your team is much easier, but you still have to raise them. Some rare bug Pokémon only appear during the Bug Catching Contest. You still have to use Park Balls for that. As I mentioned before, you face the Kanto leaders first. I must warn you, the gym leaders all have evolved Pokémon with super strong attacks. Be prepared or prepare to be frustrated.
In summary, this game has been good to me so far. If you are in the market for a good game to while away the afternoon, I suggest trying Pokémon Topaz on for size.
