New Retro Mario Bros billythekidmons..
What do you think when you hear the words New Retro Mario Bros? Do you think of New Super Mario Bros? As in the largely successful game for the Nintendo DS that was later more or less ported to the Wii? Well I am sorry because this is not that game. This is more or less a graphical overhaul of the first Mario game (Mario Bros.) to look in the same way that the games on the DS looked. Overall they did a pretty good job. The graphics actually look pretty good.
The game looks really good and almost the same as the DS game. The only major difference is the fact that the character models are not polygons. Though I am glad that they did not try to go down that route just because Super Nintendo plus polygons typically makes the game look really bad, case in point Star Fox. If they would have made the characters polygons the game would have ran slower and looked messier. So instead they went with what I believe are their own sprites. They look pretty good too; Mario resembles what he does in New Super Mario Bros, as well as every other sprite. The backgrounds look exactly the same. They lack the same depth that was in the original New Super Mario Bros but they are a far step up from the original NES game. The graphics look nice and they do look like what I would think of the New Super Mario games if they were to be put onto the Super Nintendo. I just do not like how Mario sprints but that is not something to get down about.
The game has the same game play for the most part. Except for the controls are not as tight as I would have hoped. They feel almost loose; which is not a good thing for a precision based game. I am not saying that the game is broken with the controls by any means but they do need work. I would have either liked them to try to make it just like the original in terms of control; rigid, precise, and also easier to do pixel by pixel movements. Or do it like the new one; a little bit slippery, still very tight, does not allow for pixel to pixel because there is not any. Though they tried to go some where between the middle as well as making it up as they go. This did not really work for me because it is kind of like you are on ice, neither of the games control like that. I know because I played them a lot and they did not feel like they were on ice aside from the ice level. The game play is still Mario it is just more of his mutant cousin from the past and future. I just do not like where they took it in terms of the game play.
Just because the game has a little bit of a control issue does not mean that it is not worth playing though. It also does not mean that it is not classic Mario anymore. You just have to dig a little deeper to see that Mario is still very much alive in this game. Once you get into the new control and play style I guess I will call it then you can actually start to more or less enjoy the people’s hard work on this. They tried to make it as true as they could and the addictiveness (after you dig a little deeper) is there. It has all the fun of the DS game as well as all the fun of the original. The same feeling you get after you die in the original is there in this one as well. JUST PRESS START. You always want to keep going and once you get into it, it is hard to put down.
The game sounds good still. They more or less ported over the music from the DS game and put it into this one. This means that you will not hear any remixes of old favorites in a new style. Which I think is good because that could have given them another place to slightly mess up the game and I would not enjoy that. They also used a mix of Mario World sound effects along with the ones from the DS game. This gives it it’s own kind of flavor that is actually pretty good. I liked it a lot more than I thought in the sound department. That is one of the places that I am glad to see the job that they did there. Really it is good, the game is worth playing almost just for that.
The game is un necessarily hard because of the control issues. You will be sliding around a bit more than you should which can send you too your demise really easily. When you land you scoot forward a bit and that killed me off too many times to count. I dislike that. The game is also hard because that is how the original Mario was. The game was not made to be an easy game to run through in a few minutes, though the difficulty is upped a notch when you can barely get on the right path. That makes it go from fun and anger. To just you are mad because you died and it’s the games’ freaking fault. It makes it frustrating to play and that is not something that I want out of Mario. There is a game made for that. The game’s difficulty is yet another problem there is with the game, I wish that it were not so.
The game is as deep as ever though. Too bad that it is mucked up by all the other problems the fact that you will not want to experiment with how high you can jump, how fast you can beat a level, or how many enemies you can kill in a single bound is sad. Since really that was half of the fun of the two games that it is copying. The depth like the addictiveness is down there but you have to dig a lot deeper to find it. There are still the fun glitches to play around with and there is still those few moments where the game just does not seem fair. These used to be fun in the old game but it is not so here. The game seems shallow, especially without the addition of triple jumping or any of the New Super Mario Bros staples it just seems like they could have taken it further but they just did not. This part feels more or less half done.
There you have it, if you want to have a fancy looking game that is the same as the one it is copying but with bugs choose this one. Though if you really want something that is worth your time choose super Mario Bros all stars. The game is on there and everything is better. This game is sad to say more or less a lame excuse. Everything seems to be lacking in some small or major way. So here is the rundown.
Graphics: 10 – The game is sharp and really they did do a good job of making everything look like it does in the DS game. Though the backgrounds look significantly better than the actual characters and there are a few graphic glitches here and there, it still looks a head over the original.
Sound: 8 - The music is more or less the same as what you hear in New Super Mario bros. Which I do like but the thing is I would like to hear them at least try to make a new sound out of some of the old beats.
Addictiveness: 6– Controls. That is the main reason that this area, as well as all the other ones regarding the guts of the game are low. The game just does not play that great which makes it hard to really jump in and play.
Depth: 5 – The game is still as deep and full of secrets as the original it is just that chances are you do not want to find all of them because really the controls hold you back. I did not really want to play this game to death because of that fact.
Difficulty: 10 – The game is harder than it needs to be because of, well everything. The new art mixed with the controls just ruin what could have been a solid over haul. Not a good match with the game
Overall: 5 – Yuck. That is all I can say the game looked like it had a lot of promise but in the end it was weighed down by bad controls as well as slippery characters. The game seems like some of it was not really a focus and it shows. I wish that they would have taken more time and put in a little more love…

Retro Mario Bros. Hack luigi25
I have really been on a roll this year with a lot of game reviews. I've gotten to review quite a lot of games that I've been wanting to review for well over a year now. I've also had the chance to go back and edit some of the reviews I've already made. I wasn't happy with the way some of my earlier ones turned out. I don't know how many more I'm going to be able to keep doing. There are still some more new and old games I want to review and re-review soon. Retro Mario Bros. is another new review for an interesting ROM hack I have been playing for some time.
Mostly, it is a hack of the first Super Mario Bros. game, but there are some other elements thrown in from other Mario games as well. About all of the sound effects come from Super Mario World. Also much of the music for Retro Mario Bros. was brought in from that game as well, but there are also many tracks from Yoshi's Island. The levels are exactly identical to those from Super Mario Bros. on NES, but they have really been made over graphically. However, this hack has a lot of flaws with the gameplay and difficulty that I plan on discussing in this review.
Graphics 10/10: The graphics are defiantly one of the finer points to this game. The sprites and characters of Retro Mario Bros. look very 3-dimensional. The backgrounds and other objects are full of a lot more life and detail. They probably have even more detail and color to them than those in either Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island. Every stage has their own backgrounds that really make the levels shine. This gives the game way more variety than the version of Super Mario Bros. from 1985. Those levels looked so dull and lifeless compared to the backgrounds in this hack. You have: cloud levels, ice/snow levels, underwater levels, castle/fortress levels, etc. Retro Mario Bros. looks even better than the All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 1.
Music 10/10: As I already mentioned, most of the music has been brought in from Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. Although, the songs from Yoshi's Island sound even better in Retro Mario Bros. I guess maybe they aren't as repetitive in this game, and they even included music from the more recent Mario games. The sound effects are from Super Mario World, but the music for every level is different. You don't know what song you are going to hear next! This is a hack with a lot of musical variety, and all of it is very catchy. There are so many different themes, but the effects aren't that original. Still, I have to say Retro Mario Bros. has an excellent soundtrack.
Gameplay 6/10: The levels of Retro Mario Bros. are the same levels from the first Super Mario Bros. but with a few changes. To start with, you have an overworld map of each of the 8 worlds of the game. As already stated, the music for the levels has been changed also which give them more life. The goal is still the same. You have to get to the end of the stage before time runs out. Although, once you get to the end, you have a goalpost with a tape sliding up and down just like in Super Mario World. Mario also controls just like he did in that game. He can accelerate better and also bounce off of enemies in order to get a higher jump.
The player can earn a good many extra lives, and you have the option to save and continue after beating a castle. The only problem is with castle 6 (I believe). Upon clearing this stage, the game doesn't give you the save option. This makes the game feel kind of broken, and there are also some other problems like this as well. Anyway, the hit system is the same one-hit system from the first game. The only power-ups are the Mushroom and Fire Flower. There are also no checkpoints in this game. If you die on a level, you have to go all the way back to the beginning of the stage.
The difficulty also becomes a problem in this ROM hack. The most well known problem is level 2-3. There is almost no way to avoid being hit by flying fish on this level. They seem to pop up out of nowhere and kill you! Then you have to go back to beginning of the stage. Luckily, you can re-enter levels in order to get power-ups, but that only helps so much on levels like these. There are other levels that have this problem also. I don't like the random difficulty of this hack, and this is a big issue to an otherwise great ROM hack.
Basically, Retro Mario Bros. is just a modification of SMB1. There are elements brought over from games like Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. This hack does have some flaws with its difficulty which really becomes a problem, but the improved graphics and sound balance this out somewhat. Unlike the original, this game doesn't have a Hard Mode. When you beat the game, you just get the same ending from Super Mario World which doesn't make sense. There isn't much optional challenge to it either, but it's a pretty hard game as it is with some of the bad levels. When I take all this into account, I find the gameplay of this hack to be kind of a letdown when compared to the original SMB.
Story 6/10: The story for Retro Mario Bros. is basically the same storyline from Super Mario Bros. on NES. Bowser has kidnapped the Princess, and it is up to Mario and Luigi to go venture through the Mushroom Kingdom and save her. This is nothing new, and I kind of find it to be unimportant in this game. What really makes it feel even more cheap is that you get the same ending from Super Mario World. Why? This is a hack of the first SMB! It's basically a modified version of that game not SMW. This isn't that big of an issue, but it really makes it feel like there wasn't much thought put into the plot of this hack.
Content 7/10: Retro Mario Bros. is made up of the same 8 worlds from SMB without the extra Hard Mode. Each one of them has their own theme for this hack, and this was another one of the ways in which Retro Mario Bros. was an improvement over the regular Super Mario Bros. World 1 is a grassy area, World 2 is a desert, World 3 takes place at night with a starry background and music from Yoshi's Island, World 4 is a forest world, World 5 is an ice world, World 6 takes place in some kind of valley with mountains in the background, World 7 seems to be a bridge area with the underwater level 7-2, and World 8 is Bowser's World.
Each of the 8 worlds from Super Mario Bros. have been given their own theme and overworld map this time. This is quite an upgrade from the plain, dull, boring levels in the NES version of SMB! However, upon completing this game there really isn't anything else. There is no Hard Mode this time, and even though the worlds are given new life, there aren't any more options for players who have completed the regular game. It only takes a little under an hour to finish if you cheat your way through the game and don't die. The amount of content to this hack is kind of underwhelming when compared to Super Mario Bros. even though the 8 worlds have been given more of an identity.
Difficulty 10/10: The difficulty of Retro Mario Bros. is a big problem! It is full of a lot of glitches, mostly missing platforms. I find myself having to save state and backtrack through levels in order to get them to re-spawn. The enemy patterns are different, and they seem to all want to kill you a lot faster than they did in SMB. This is a game that is difficult for the wrong reasons. Then there is the infamous 2-3 level. A stage that has flying fish come out of nowhere and kill you making you have to re-start from the beginning. Why? Can I ask why there are no checkpoints in this game? You can go back to levels and power back up and get extra lives, but that doesn't seem to help on badly designed levels like these!
Level 2-3 and 7-3 both have this problem. The fish seem to come out of nowhere and hit you when you least suspect it. Their pattern is almost impossible to predict, and you don't know when one is going to hit you! You do get quite a lot of extra lives from the SMW bonus games at the end of the stages after grabbing 100 bonus stars. Players also get to save and continue after finishing one of the castles (except castle 6!). Although, for these two stages, this doesn't help much at all. These two stages could have been improved, and this is what makes this hack almost impossible to finish without save states!
The two bridge levels slow the game down a lot, and I have only been able to finish them with a lot of trial/error or by cheating my way through them. The rest of the levels aren't that hard, but some of the them aren't that easy either with the new way in which the enemies attack you. Beating Retro Mario Bros. is just plain hard! You really have to dedicate yourself to this game in order to beat it. I've rage quit on 2-3 more times than I can count! There are no checkpoints, and you can still only take one hit. That's what makes levels like these even harder. This is just a hard game, and the difficulty really affects the gameplay.
Overall 7.8/10: This was a pretty hard review to make. Retro Mario Bros. is a graphical overhaul of the original NES Mario game. The music is also better and unlike nothing else in any other Mario hack. This is a hard game to play, but it can be done. It feels impossibly difficult even after a lot of trial/error and memorization. The story/plot could have been better too, and I feel like there wasn't much effort put into that either. Retro Mario Bros. also doesn't have quite as much content as the original SMB, but I liked how every world was given its own theme. There are a lot of strong points and weak points to this game as a whole, but I guess the good does weigh out the bad. After all, when compared to a lot of other SMB1 hacks, this is one of the better ones.

New Super Mario Bros. Classic World Pacman+Mariofan
I think that the creator(s) of this game did a good job of re-creating levels from Super Mario Bros. on the NES, ripping graphics from New Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo DS, and transforming it into New Retro Mario Bros. I think that this was a GENIUS idea for a Super Mario World hack. I'll start talking about the graphics now.
The graphics in this game are very impressive, because almost every single thing in this game is re-textured in New Super Mario Bros. style. There are also very creative backgrounds too. They're easier to see when you grab the flag and walk your way out of the level. The whole screen gets really dark and you can PERFECTLY see the background (I've taken a couple of screenshots that you can view to see what I'm talking about). Also, the text was slightly changed. It's really colorful, especially when the screen gets dark.
Now, let's move on to the music. Most of the music in this game is from New Super Mario Bros. The creator(s) of this game had to remix lots of the songs from New Super Mario Bros. into a Super Mario World hack. The music is really impressive. I'll give you a couple of examples.
The very first level in this game has new music (it's the same theme that plays in the first level of New Super Mario Bros!). When I heard that familiar tune in level 1, I just KNEW this game was going to be good.
In the first level of world 2, the music is the theme used in the first level of Super Mario Land (in case you've never heard of it, it's a game for the Game Boy that is similar in a way to Super Mario Bros. for the NES). I couldn't help but smile when I heard this theme. It sounds so awesome in a Super Mario World hack!
In the second level of world 4, the music is the theme used in "Hazy Maze Cave" in Super Mario 64! WHOA!
Now, I'll talk about some other random stuff that makes this game good.
In the last level of every world, Bowser is waiting for you at the end, just like in the original Super Mario Bros. There is a switch waiting for you behind Bowser. I guess the creator(s) of this game couldn't make it an axe, but it's still good.
After you press the switch that gets rid of the bridge that Bowser is standing on, he falls into the lava. You press this weird green orb to automatically walk to victory.
After you start walking automatically, Toad is waiting for you. There is a speech bubble above him that says, "THANK U!" Then, you unlock a pipe that warps you to the next world.

Overall: Well, this is my review of Super Retro Mario Brothers. I had given the overall of this retro game ten. This retro game resembles New Super Mario Brothers. The background soundtracks are highly similar and grasp the exact tune from New Super Mario Brothers. Super Retro Mario Brothers offers a decent amount of content, but not as much content. Each world in this retro game are short and highly simple. I dashed through world one like a cheetah. Mario and the enemies own giggly appearances. It is somewhat difficult to tell Mario's size apart. Anyways, the story constantly begins when Bowser
must capture Princess Peach. Bowser is allowed to resist it, well, that is the way I gander at it. Mario must rescue Princess Peach from the idiotic dinosaur named Bowser. Wish Mario good luck!:D
Graphics: This is the paragraph about the graphics. Super Retro Mario Brothers has decent graphics. The only unstable problem about the graphics is Mario, every enemy, and every object and item that had originated from New Super Mario Brothers seriously stand out, too much. Other than that, the graphics are just perfect and highly stable. The graphics for the maps are decent, but they aren't exactly perfect. Most of the graphics are swell and as decent as many other retro games.
Sound: The background soundtracks are actually swell. Most of the background soundtracks resemble ones from other Mario video games and mostly New Super Mario Brothers. Off that subject... Many of the background soundtracks grasp a catchy tune, as similar as New Super Mario Brothers' background soundtracks. Most of the background soundtracks grasp a decent speed when active.
Addictiveness: Super Retro Mario Brothers is an okay retro video game, but not perfect. It isn't a retro video game I would constantly play, unlike Super Mario World. I constantly play Super Mario World. Anyways, Super Retro Mario Brothers isn't seriously addicting, but I may play it another time period. Since this retro video game isn't such an addicting retro video game, this is the end of my short paragraph.

Each world is extremely short and simple to complete, the courses are highly simple, and since the courses resemble the ones included in Super Mario Brothers, it is simple for me to complete these courses exactly like a cheetah because I memorize most of the courses included in Super Mario Brothers. The depth is decent and may be long if you aren't such a skilled Mario player.
Difficulty: Well, Super Retro Mario Brothers is an extremely simple retro video game. I breeze exactly through the courses included inside this retro video game included inside the Retro Game Room. I attempt to discover many hidden areas and warp zones. Although, I don't often use the warp zones to skip over the other worlds in range of the current world and the world between the warp zone pipe I choose. I am seriously awesome at this retro game and I constantly avoid attacking the enemies included in each course.
Anyways, this is the end of my review including Super Retro Mario Brothers. If you decide to give this retro game a go, I highly recommend it and good luck playing!:D

Neat Little Homebrew King-Giga
When I first saw this game I wasn’t sure about playing it. Though it was rather similar to New Super Mario Bro’s i’m really glad i gave it a chance. It plays alright for what it is but I beleive if it was polished up a littler more it could be something really awesome !
As far as I know the game plays a lot more like the DS version instead of the Wii Version. The graphics are pretty cute as well and fit well with the backgrounds and over all it’s a fun little game.
Graphics 9Graphics earns a nine because they look very nice. Everything fits together well and the sprites are nice looking while still keeping an
updated look. They don’t look messy or any thing which is very good ! Everything looks natural. I would have given it a full 10 but I ran into some glitches here and there that seemed to be graphical related.
Over all most of the over world appears to be custom work including the sprites and it’s always lovely to see something fresh and new like that !
Sound 10 I adored the music it was like a retro version of the New Super Mario Bros music, and it never got annoying. I enjoyed hearing each track for each level and it was really fun to see what song would be next. The music is very cheery and delightful to listen to.
Addictiveness 7The game can be a little difficult to play but it’s not terrible. It does have me wanting to play even more than the short run I had played so that’s always a plus ! I think a lot of people will probably enjoy this game. I have a feeling this is going to be a game i'll be playing a lot as well !?
Story 6The Intro was rather short reminiscent to the older games. It hs the normal story that most of the games IE, Save the princess and defeat the bad guy type of thing. ?It's pretty straightforward. You move from level to level beating bad guys until you get to the flag.?
Depth 7The levels aren’t very long at all their rather short which surprised me. There seems to be plenty of levels within the game so there’s no shortage of that. I hadn’t gotten very far so I don’t know the total amount of levels within the game honestly.
Difficulty 8Difficulty gets an 8 due to the fact the game can be rather difficult in parts. I played it with a controller so it was probably a lot easier for me. There are no hold items like Super Mario World had and that can make things difficult. You only get 2 hits if you have a power up (Fire Flower, Mushroom ) Instead of Three if you had persay the fireflower in Super Mario World.
Still it’s not bad but it worked it’s not the same as New Super Mario Bros which can make it rather difficult.
Overall I give the game a Solid 8 for being a quirky little homebrew that I enjoyed a lot more than I ever thought I would have. With a little polishing this game could really be awesome !

First of all I never knew this game existed .So I will explain a bit back in 2006 Nintendo successful ds had a game called new super Mario bros . Which was successful very successful on the handheld or plat former . So apparently who ever had this game went hmmm what would happen if that game was released 15 years earlier on the snes . That was a question nobody but the deveploer asked then he came up with the solution retro Mario bros. Anyways lets get into this game

honestly this wasn't not just a map change this was a full texture hack. While these graphics are not exactly the same as the ds game it does resemble it . Honestly I think the Mario sprite was directly taken from Mario and Luigi superstar saga for the gba . Anyways all though it seems like it was ripped considering this was a Mario world hack I'm very impressed with these graphics it was different than kazio world or all those other Mario hacks. So I give it a 10 its not ds perfect quality but it does do a good job of resembling it .
Sound again this was to resemble Mario bros ds . The main sound compartment is all of the recongizeable Mario jumps and what not . Soundtrack Some Songs were directly taken from Super Mario World The Rest of the Soundtrack is meant to be like the Mario bros for ds and overall I think the person who made this game did a good job resembling the Mario bros ds soundtrack. the sound its not perfect but certainly close so I give it a 9 its a little off
Addictiveness Honestly I thought this Mario hack was gonna play like junk and boy was I wrong this game is just accurate enough into the Mario series every thing that made Mario bros fun to play is here and enjoyable . I have to give credit to who ever made this hack I'm surprised it played well and true to the series addictiveness gets a 10
Story well this was meant to resemble Mario bros ds So the story would be the same bowser has kidnapped princess peach and you play as Mario kick bowser and his minions butt to rescue peach . Only difference other being the graphics is the intro is different . So story gets a 6 just a different intro that's all
Depth This really offers a texture version of Mario bros ds on the super Nintendo so you should have every shortcut bosses items and what not if I am correct . Honestly like other Mario games it will take a long time to beat because it has so many levels depth gets a 10
Difficulty again I'm surprised this played very well the person or team deveploing this hack had to knew Mario world and the series inside out really I found the game to be well balanced in ai difficulty and the controls work perfectly as planned only thing is the level finish part of the game is a little off and it does not have the same theme as the ds original . Anyways difficulty gets a 5 well balanced for Mario fans or players
Final Verdict I'm really happy I played this I thought it was gonna be junk cant really blame me there because most home brews I have seen or played was terrible . This game however turned out to be excellent I really like it . I give the game a 9.7 its a really neat hack

XD you can play New Retro Mario Bros in play*dot*rom*dot*online if you wanna play it! ============================ Wath is New Retro Mario Bros??? ============================ New Retro Mario Bros is an ramake of the classic and nostalgic super mario bros! but.. its maked in the super mario world engine! it have new musics! and it have remastered levels of classic super mario bros! ============ Overall 10/10 ============ game is not bad! its very amazing! good gameplay,and good level design! of course! its an ramake of mario bros! this is why it have an great level design! i tath loved this game! amazing gameplay! and good level design! =========== Graphics 8/10 =========== For me,graphics is not too cool! But. Graphics is very good! but... Not too same with the NDS (Nintendo DS) graphics! mario need an new spr ite! an bit like of the NDS graphics! (Ps. Im dont hating this game) But, removing this the graphics is great for this hack rom!
=========== Sound 9/10 =========== great musics! tath is not amazing but its great! it have the NDS musics and some mario world musics! the creator of this game used some mario world musics why,some types of levels dont have in the NDS version! =================== Addictiveness 4/10 =================== i tath not played too much times why for me,this game is new! i never see it again ;-; ok,i know wath this hack is not new! but i see it in this year my dudes
