NASCAR 98 Review by: zanderlex - 8.5/10

The Original NASCAR Game

When I was growing up, I had a bunch of different racing games. I had Mario Kart, I had an F1 game, and of course, I had NASCAR 98. This was the first racing game that I put any real effort into because it was the most realistic game that I had played at the time, it used real drivers, cars, and tracks. It was the first game made for NASCAR and I thought that it was really cool.

I can still remember the first day that I played the game all these years ago. It was nighttime and I was doing really bad, finishing in the bottom every time. I didn't like losing like this so I had thought about giving up on the game. I soon learned that I was doing bad just because I was tired because starting the next day I began to win every race that I was in. This was the first time I had really been introduced to NASCAR, and if course Jeff Gordon, and because of that game, I sort of fell in love with the sport. I like the game because of the nostalgia and such, it was one of my first few Playstation games and it has to be one of my top 3 PS games.

As for the graphics, well they aren't that good. Its a game that came out more than 10 years ago and it's not like its a sequel like a 4th or 5th installment, it's the very first game of the series. Because of this, the aspects of the graphics were just beginning to be worked out and even though they looked good, especially for a racing game, bit ultimately there was a lot more that could have been done to make the game look better. My overall grade for the graphics section is a 7 out of 10.

As for the sound of the game, I could say pretty much the same as I had for the graphics. The basic sounds of a racing game can clearly be heard such as the engine roaring, the occasional crash and such. However, aside from those, there is nothing that is really notable when it cones to the sound. There is basically no music, but that's fine considering it was an old game that was the first of the series  my overall grade for sound is also a 7 out of 10.

When it comes to the story, there isn't much considering it is a racing game, however there is something similar to a championship season where you take control of the wheel for a NASCAR season and try to win as much as you can. That's basically what you really do in NASCAR so that mode is spot on. Foe the story, I am going to give this game an 8 out of 10.

As for the addictiveness of the game, there is a lot to do, even though it is just the first game of the series. There are 24 drivers that you can control and a bunch of tracks that you can use. This might seem like a small amount, but every race is different and may leave you surprised. Take me for example, there was this one track that I loved and I always played on that track with either Gordon or Martin. The track was easy and I won every single game without ever getting bored. As for this section of the game, I also give an 8 out of 10.

As for the depth, the game is fun to repeat each track over and over, but when you just look at the numbers if how many drivers and tracks there are, there just isn't that much. That is okay though, seeing it's the first game in the series. Right now, I give the depth a 7 out of 10

As for the difficulty of the game, the game is not difficult at all, however there might be a few tracks that will be difficult to get a hang of. If you learn the controls right away and you find one or two tracks that you like, you will have no problem with the game. My grade for the difficulty is a 5.

For the overall feel of the game, some people might not like the game because of it being so old and such, but I really like the game and I feel that some of you would grow to like it as well if you give it a try. My overall grade for the game is an 8.5.
