NASCAR 2000 Review by: Barathemos - 7.1/10

NASCAR 2000 Review
NASCAR 2000 is another NASCAR game that I have played many times and have enjoyed quite a bit. NASCAR 2000 was released first on the Game Boy Color, not the Game Boy advanced, which I reviewed yesterday, which makes the game so much more different than the other ones. This game however, isn't really that good based on the other games for the NASCAR games released in the early 2000s and the late 1990s, so I actually didn't rate this so great. Thankfully, the game wasn't that bad and still did have many high points.

Graphics: 4
This is where I am really going to hit this game hard. I'm just going to be completely honest, this game looked bad. Not awful, but still bad. Based on some other NASCAR games and other racing games on the Game boy color, this was quite honestly a pretty dang big disappointment. When I first started the game, I just kinda didn't know what was going on. The option screens are bland and hard to look at, and I didn't want to spend any more time selecting what I wanted to play than I had to, so I didn't. When I finally was able to get passed that and get on to the game, I was taken aback. The game looks choppy and has badly pixelated cars, grass, walls, pits, and everything else in the entire game. Things just don't go well at in the game, and I was really mad about the fact that I was about to play this game and write a review. After about 25 minutes of painfully playing the game and looking at the screen, you get used to the graphics and you begin to not think that it looks so bad. If it hadn't been for the notes I had written down when originally playing the game, I probably would have given the game a slightly higher score with this, maybe a 5 or a 6, but because of my first impressions, I just couldn't give the game a higher score. However, I liked some of the ending such as when you win a race, the graphics and the animation looks pretty good. That was my favorite part of the graphics and why I gave the graphics a 4.

Sound: 6
Strong suit for this game? Well, kind of. For what you're getting out of the game, the sound isn't really that half bad. When I first listened to it, I was just kind of like meh, this sounds kind of like any other 8 bit music, but just not with the attracting factors that you were able to get with so many other games. As soon as you start up the game you can hear that you won't be getting anything special. When moving past the home screens and the select screens, the music is just kind of elevator music, made to be in the background that you want to get out of as quickly as possible. When you finally get to the in game, the music isn't actually that terrible. It's kind of upbeat and is meant to get you going along the track as fast as possible, which it does a pretty good job at. What I enjoyed most was how while the music was pretty repetitive, it sounds like it doesn't repeat all that much. Along with the music, car engines, crashes, driving into the grass and into the walls, sounds mediocre. The car engines weren't really something anyone could get right back in these years, and they did a fairly decent job being able to not make it sound like its dying. Overall the sound was probably one of the best parts of the game, and that's saying something, so I gave it a 6 out of 10.

Addictiveness: 4
As I stated in my review yesterday, I find NASCAR games to be very addicting due to how much you want to get new times and complete every single track as fast as possible. Sadly however, this game is not addicting, and doesn't have the traits that I would normally find in a good NASCAR game. The simple fact about this game is that it isn't the standard type of good NASCAR game. It isn't that fun to play, is hard to look at, and doesn't keep your attention. With other NASCAR games where you want to set best times on all sorts of difficulties, setting a best time on this game isn't that important to me, and isn't that important overall as a game. I just don't want to keep playing this game, and right now, I don't want to even write this review because I just had so little attention for it overall. The game is just so slow and hard to play, and I can't just keep going at it over and over. When I tried to play it enough of write this review, it was hard, and I had to try it over and over. Overall, it just isn't fun to play pretty much at all, which I find amazing saying its a NASCAR game, which I normally love to play. This is why I only have the game a 4 out of 10.

Story: N/A
Just like yesterday's game that I reviewed, they isn't actually a story that you follow though out your course of playing the game. All there is is trying to win all of the races in all of the difficulties and on all of the tracks. That's pretty much it and is why I gave the game a Non Applicable.

Depth: 6
Here is yet another problem I found with the game, for a NASCAR game, they isn't exactly a whole lot of depth and a whole lot to do. There aren't quite as many tracks or anything like that and what even. The game just kind of stops and nothing else really happens. You do the same tracks over and over and nothing else. Naturally you can play the game on harder modes or easier mods or whatever you want to do, but they aren't near as different in difficulty as any other NASCAR games, which just quite honestly doesn't want me to jump around the difficulties to see what is better. The lack of things to do in the game just don't add much to do and doesn't add anything fun to do to take up any of your valuable time. I didn't like this much about the game and did give a big weigh down on what should have been in this NASCAR game. This is why I gave it a 6 out of 10 overall, there are things to do, but not enough for me to love it.

Difficulty: 4
I like a moderately difficult NASCAR game, and this does have some of that, but the changes in difficulties that you would want to have just aren't there and don't make the game all that fun to get better at. When a game starts out this easy and just gets really hard out of nowhere, you don't know what happens, and the game sucks. That'd pretty much a major flaw about this game, it doesn't ease you into the game, it just makes it hard and harder as it goes along. Because of this crazy difficulty scale out of the game made me decide to give the game a 4 out of 10 on difficulty.

Overall: 7.1
The thing about this game is that, despite so many crazy flaws that you have to work through, the game isn't that terrible. Yes the game wanted me to stop playing and play a quality NASCAR game, but I can't be too hateful. The game did have some good quality such as a favorable driving physics to the game, which I did enjoy, and did really make my game review a lot better overall. Because of the fact that there are a good amount of good points, and because I'm a nice person, I decided that this game deserved at least a 7.1 out of 10 on my rating scale.
