Moon Patrol (Atarisoft) Review by: Totts - 9.2/10

Moon Patrol
Moon patrol, another timeless classic of video game history for the C64, and also by IREM Corp., probably one of the most iconic game forging companies out there (just think of R-type). It is therefore only right and proper that a short report to this game is to find on to Vizzed's pages. Or is there someone about disagrees? No? Good! Then lets begin.

I played this game very often and very much like Moon patrol in the 80´s arcades. Hmm… When I think about it, I have to say that Moon patrol could inspire all players right away because the gameplay was or is still very simple, but very entertaining for this reason, just like Mario is simple, yet highly engaging. The technical performance is simply sensational time standards. Yes, the game had scrolling and the same two whole levels. It was, then, called Parallax scrolling. The foreground scrolls faster than the background, creating a spatial illusion that suggests us the satisfaction that the mountains in the background seems to be really far. A major improvement on other games of the time then was the scrolling introduced to us by IREM Corp, in this groundbreaking shooter Defender, we were faced with the delights of highly technical graphics for the time. There was also the picture of moon patrol which was really much more colorful and much nicer than the previous games, who have only black backgrounds. Moon patrol can indeed be regarded as one of the best games in this country now bygone era of arcade games.

What should you do but actually play Moon patrol! As I said before, the game is really simple. You control, as a player, one moon buggy, from a side on perspective, on the rugged lunar surface and must reach a starting - from point A to point Z. This task being of which is of course not so easy, that should be obvious to everyone, the very long way with many common obstacles is provided. A crater in the Lunar soil or carefully designed mines must be skillfully skipped, and the other rocks or approaching enemy objects such as UFOs must be pulverized by means of two guns attached to the stroller. A cannon with shorter reach is aimed forward and the other with the larger reach upwards. Now, one might think that the game is very simple, since jumping over holes and blowing and shooting everything away is a somewhat mad fashion should not make things too difficult. I can deny this is the case, however, because the dangers are not only so well thought out and cleverly positioned, that they actually occur in a way so that you can really face problems. There is, in the orignal arcade version only however, a warning system consisting of three lights, that make things easier. The upper light flashes then is expected to enemy attack from the front or top, flashes the medium, then you rest on a minefield, and flashes the lower, then it is attacked from behind. Fortunately all sections act as checkpoints, so you do not always have to do everything from scratch at the point of an untimely and sudden death when it hits you. When the sections E, J, O, T are completeed you get extra points if you stay within a certain time limit. You collect these letters until you reach the end of section Z, you must then try your luck in Championship mode. In the original arcade version I have never so far, I must for my sins, unfortunately and most humbly confess. But this is an excellent implementation, and for the Commodore 64 and Atarisoft, who is responsible for moon patrol, as blisher of Defender. At home at least one can play thisgame on a simpler level than at the arade. This home implementation does not have the Visual warning system, that I mentioned of above of the original, however, what's is not so bad in itself and technically it is naturally adapted to the processing power of the systems. But just as fun and happy as the big arcade brother makes you.

Moon patrol is a pioneer of all video games and you should know this game definitely at least by its name, because without these old games there would be no final fantasy, perhaps even no R type! or have mercy on our sins, world of warcraft etc. So let us all pay homage to the gracious ancestors of video games and keep them in mind in the future as we play fondly with its 'off spring' in the form the the modern beautifully innovative and interesting games, as Defender was designed with the same love, care, dedication and passion and was a masterpiece of its time.

Moon Patrol (Atarisoft) Game Description

The moon is under attack from a horde of aliens, and you must stop them in your armed buggy. Drive along the surface shooting the aliens and avoiding their bullets. The surface is not flat, there are craters and rocks to avoid contact with, and landmines on the surface. Flying saucers create new craters when they crash. The 25 restart points are letter-coded.
