Mighty the Armadillo in Sonic 1 (Knuckles Chaotix Sprites) Review by: Mohammedroxx3 - 8.5/10

Another sprite hack with a few modifications and secrets...
Well, hello everyone! looks like I'm finally in the mood to make another game review for today! And I hope I'm able to continue making game reviews everyday and I'm beginning to feel that making game reviews are actually pretty fun to do while you are helping the site right at the same time so I hope to keep up this pace of making reviews everyday. So it looks like I made another review for another sprite hack of Sonic the hedgehog.

I remember making a game review for a hack of sonic the hedgehog before that also had Mighty the Armadillo as the main playable character. But this hack isn't really as modified that much like that other hack with mighty the armadillo as the main character though. But only the graphics of that hack and green hill zone was mostly modified though. But not modified so well. So the things that were changed in this hack of Sonic the hedgehog was that Sonic was replaced with the forgotten character, Mighty the Armadillo, and some of the badniks had their color slightly changed, Dr. Eggman's color was slightly changed and also the title screen was changed but I will talk more about that in the graphics section of my review.  So some of you reading this may or may not know who Mighty the Armadillo is. Well, he is a forgotten character that first appeared in a game called SegaSonic the hedgehog. He has also appeared in a few other games like knuckles' chaotix. I have heard in some wiki and sources a few months ago that when they were first creating Sonic the hedgehog, they have also had the concept of Mighty. Specifically Armadillos instead of hedgehogs. And then they decided to pick a hedgehog instead of an armadillo. I'm not 100 percent sure if thats true though. And then they mentioned that they reused the concept in SegaSonic the hedgehog and knuckles' chaotix. Well, at first I didn't believe it at all, but when I looked a little closely in to Mighty the armadillo's appearance, I sort of got a little convinced, but I will mention more about that in the graphics section of my review. Also like Sonic, tails, and knuckles, Mighty the armadillo is also fast. But I'm not sure if he's faster than Sonic or not. Mighty is also in the chaotix group, he is friends with Vector the Crocodile, Charmy the bee, Espio the Chameleon, Knuckles the echidna, and Sonic the hedgehog. And his best friend is Ray the Flying squirrel, An even more forgotten character than Mighty the Armadillo. And probably whoever is reading this might not even know who he is but I don't blame you. I don't know Ray the flying squirrel that much myself. lol. And I believe Mighty the armadillo and Ray the flying squirrel probably appeared in several comics, but those comics aren't really well known though. Alright, now let us talk more about this hack of Sonic the hedgehog! :)

Gameplay:
 8

Well, not so bad. I guess it's okay. Their are a few things that were changed for the gameplay. The first thing I noticed was the physics! When Mighty started running down a hill, he actually moves faster instead of being at normal speed! So the physics was sort of improved I guess! Also another thing I noticed is that he can spin dash too which would be useful in some cases! You can simply spin dash by holding down and tap A, B, C while your on the ground. The more you tap the faster he blasts off when you release him! And I'm sure you all already know this by now, lol. Also when Mighty ran in to the parts of the wall that are usually breakable by rolling into them, he actually was able to break through it like knuckles without having to roll through it like Sonic! And one really cool thing that most of you may not be aware of when playing this game is that Mighty can wall jump! Just go to the wall you want to jump on, then jump while sticking near it and then press the jump key again and he will jump off the wall! Also if you hold up and right while you do it, you will just jump up the wall and if you keep doing it, then it is as if your climbing the wall like knuckles! Except he goes up the wall much faster than knuckles! And you guys might be thinking, "How is that even so useful?". Well, I thought the same thing the first time I tried it out but then as I was playing around with it, I discovered a few crazy things you can do to skip through most parts of a level! Well, not all of the levels but a few of them. Like if you go to Marble zone, in all 3 acts, their is usually this huge wall, just wall jump up the wall to tell your reach the top and then run to the right on top of the wall and jump off it and then you have skipped most of the act! But be sure to have some rings with you before trying this because their is a huge chance that you might land on something that will lose all of your rings. You might land on lava or a badnik but simply jump out of it in to safety afterwards and recover some of your rings and then just continue the level like normal and you will realize that you have finished it a lot faster than normal! That is also possible to do in Spring yard zone and a few others! But I'm not really here to mention all of that though but I might make a walkthrough for this game in the future so stay tuned! Yup, and I guess his jumping height might be the same like Sonic but his jumping height does seem slightly higher due to the slightly small rolling sprite of Mighty from knuckles chaotix which I will talk more about in the graphics section of my review that coming right up! The gameplay still didn't get a high rating in my opinion because their are only a few acts that has these special secrets from mighty's wall jumping abilities. And thats it for the huge gameplay portion of my review! :)

Graphics:
 8

Well, finally, looks like it's what you have been waiting for. First I will talk a little about the graphics of this hack of Sonic the hedgehog and then I will say the strange discoveries I have noticed. So the graphics and the gameplay is what was mostly changed in this game. I have already talked about the gameplay so now lets talk about the graphics. So I have noticed something a little odd. Most of the badnik's colors were slightly changed to light red and even some elements in the game were also changed to light red. Also Dr. Eggman himself was really changed. His mustache is red! lol. I don't know why that was changed but I guess it was meant as a slight color improvement in the game. But it's not that much of an improvement or difference from the original though but I guess it looks alright. And as for the title screen, it was also changed replacing Mighty the Armadillo instead of Sonic. He looks sort of heroic I guess. He also looks sort of childish, younger, and excited but thats not really a bad thing though. I guess it's sort of cool! And the animation of him in the title screen is sort of funny but it's alright. And now lets talk about the Mighty the Armadillo sprite! As mentioned in the title of the game, his sprites are from another game he appeared in, which is knuckles' chaotix. And now, the really strange thing here. Going back to what I said earlier about me being more convinced that he was a reused concept when Sonic the hedgehog was being created, the reason why I was more convinced is because Mighty looks really similar to Sonic! I'm not joking, just look at his sprites. Look at the way he stands, the way he runs, the way he's idle, the way he loses his rings, the way he dies! It all looks really similar to Sonic! Didn't you notice that? It's as if, Sega drew right on top of Mighty and recolored him to Sonic! Also when Mighty rolls in to a ball or jumps, his sprite is slightly smaller than Sonic so he looks like his jumping height is slightly higher than Sonic but I'm not sure if thats true though. And other than that, everything else appears to be the same like the original Sonic the hedgehog. Yup, thats all for the graphics section of my review. The gameplay and the graphics were the only things that were changed so I'm not sure if I will be detailed in the rest of my review but I will still try my best though!

Sound: 9

Well, the sound is pretty much the same exact thing like the original Sonic the hedgehog, but I got to say, it's honestly better this way. All other Sonic hacks with changed background musics turned out pretty bad most of the time in my opinion. The original is always the best in my opinion but only for sound! All sound effects and background musics in this hack was unchanged. But I do love the original sounds over all other remixes and changes in other hacks but I honestly don't know how to describe it. All the background musics pretty much match their environment well. Like green hill zone is all happy and relaxing. But I'm not sure what else to say here, thats all for the sound portion of my review I guess.

Addictiveness: 6

Well, the game is somewhat addictive. Not very addictive though. Like at times you might be in the mood to play around with mighty's wall jumping technique though other games would be a lot more addictive than this game though. Not really that much special things in this game that would make me want to play it again. Well, thats all for the addictiveness section of my review I guess.

Story: 6

Yup, you already know what I'm going to say here. Same old story. Dr. Eggman is using innocent little animals as a source of his evil inventions and it is up to Sonic the hedgehog Mighty the Armadillo to go and stop him from his evil doings. Not much to say here, the story is just to simple. Thats all for the story portion of my review.

Depth: 8

I guess this game does have a little depth in it. Too bad I over-killed all the information about this part of my review in to the game play part again. But I guess some fixed physics, spindash and wall jumping, and Mighty appearing in the title screen would give the depth a bit of a high rating. Though not that much, but it's pretty good. Thats all for the depth.

Difficulty: 6

Well, thanks to the special ability of wall jumping for Mighty the Armadillo, you can skip over marble zone like knuckles, and maybe even some of the other parts of some acts and zones too. But he doesn't really have this advantage over all the other zones. So mostly the difficulty would be the same thing just like the original Sonic the hedgehog I guess. Usually goes from easy to hard. And I guess it would make sense, right? I mean if you were to hear "Green hill zone to scrap brain zone", then I'm sure you know what I mean. And I really hate labyrinth zone in my opinion, lol. Always end up drowning because I just can't find any bubbles and then a short and easy break in Star light zone but then drops back hard in Scrap brain zone. Yup, thats all for the difficulty, I guess.

OVERALL: 8.5

Not a bad game! It's something fun to try out for a short while I guess. Thats all for my review! And YES! I finally reached over 2000 words!!! Yay! I hope to keep my reviews this long or even longer in the future! Thanks for reading and I wish you all an awesome day! :D
