Metroid Fusion Review by: Oldschool41 - 9.8/10

Another Old School Game Review

Time for another Old School Game Review!! This time I'm reviewing one of my favorite Game Boy Advanced Games. Metriod Fusion. The last Metriod Game in terms of story progression; the game offers a fresh new look to our favorite Space Pirate Hunter: Samus Aran. While the game lacks the Graphics and Boss battles send in Metriod Prime 1, Metriod Prime 2: Echoes, and Metriod Prime 3: Corruption; Metriod Fusion looks fantastic for a Game Boy Advanced Game, while still having your good old fashion Charge Beam, Missiles, and Morph Ball style gameplay. Here is a breakdown by each category.

Graphics: For a Game Boy Advanced game; Metriod Fusion looks fantastic. Despite the fact that the first level (space station) doesn't pop out as much; once you get down into each Sectors, the graphics for each Sectors look unique and individualize. When playing in Sector 1, you get the feeling like your playing a classic Metriod Game; only with much more depth in the background particulary when you see the individual monsters eyes light up, appearing as if they are stalking you in the background. When playing in Sector 2, you actually feel like your playing inside a large forest surrounded with large catepillers (later on hornets). When playing in Sector 4, you feel like your inside a large lake with individual "pools" filled with shark monsters that use these "pools" like their own breeding grounds. Later on in the game; Sector 3 feels like your playing inside a large ocean beneath those individual "pools" that truely deserve the name as the "Water level". When playing in Sector 3, you feel like your inside a large volcano with visual simmering heat that burns you if you enter the room. Later on in Sector 3 you get the sensation that your "swimming" inside a large volcano with actual lava (and sometimes that lava erupts if your not careful). While playing in Sector 5, you feel like your inside a large deep freezer and you sometimes feel like your playing a level in Antartica and you might end up freezing to death if your not careful what room you enter. While playing in Sector 6 you feel like your inside a dark cave with so little light that you sometimes can't figure out if the monsters are in front of you or where they are. One thing that I should point out is that when you see some of the damage on the doors, or the cracks in the walls (particually in Sector 6) really adds some more graphical depth to the already stunning graphics. Overall I rank it a 10.

Sound: Out of all the games that I've played on Vizzed or on my Game Boy Advanced; Metriod Fusion has the most unique sound bits. I can honestly say that the music overall is really well script. The music can start out slow while you play through each Sector, then all of a sudden you hear an emergency warning and the music starts to pick up. What I would say is the best part in terms of music, is how the music adds to the graphics. When playing in Sector 5, the music sounds "chilly", "crisp", and almost "frosty"; adding more cold to an already cold enviornment. When playing in Sector 4, the music sounds very fluid; adding to the presence that you are in an Aqua Enviornment. When one of the Emergency, Time Limit parts the music is fast paced, adding to the mood that you need to get out or your going to die. Overall I give the Sound a 10.

Addictiveness: Metriod Fusion is a very addictive game. The fact that you can enter one room, kill all the monsters, leave, re-enter, and then kill the same monsters you already killed seconds ago, makes the game great for someone who just wants to kill stuff over and over again. The Boss Battles are unique and different. When you kill a boss, you take pride in the fact that your newly acquired suit parts are going to come in handy later on in the game and make you feel so badass. The common enemies you face all have unique ways of damaging you; wheather it is using a beam weapon, raming you, fireballs, or slashing you; adding a variety of ways to either kill or avoid them. Overall I give the Addictiveness a 10.

Story: Metriod Fusion has a great, intense story. Picking off from when Metriod: The Other M ending. Samus Aran is exploring Planet SR388 with a couple of memebers from the Galactic Federation when they encounter a monster. After killing the monster; a yellow cellular-looking creature appears where the creature was just killed. Not knowing what the thing is; Samus attempts to kill it, but her attacks don't seem to do anything. Just before she can think, the creature lashes onto Samus, infecting her. Not knowing what just happned Samus leaves SR388, enters her ship, and forms up with a Galactic Federation fleet. Disaster stucks however as the unknown creature somehow makes its way into Samus' central nervous system, causing her to be knocked unconcouiss and her ship crashes into an asteriod field. Luckly her ship activated the auto-inject system and Samus survived as was brought aboard the Galactic Federation ship. When the Galactic Federation workers discover her, they find that the unknown creature has multiplied itself causing yellow blobs to pour out of Samus' body. Quickly the Galactic Federation fleet treat her, but doing so they had to remove large chunks of her suit; but with no sort of cure, Samus was most likely going to die. Luckily, someone discovered a cure and injected Samus with Metriod DNA as the Metriod feeds off the unknown creature, now called X parasite by the Galactic Federation. The Metriod Serum worked and the X parasite was completely gone; but in the process Samus appears almost "Metriod-like" and instead of her iconic Orange Mechanical Suit; she gains a Blue, Metriod-like Suit. After she recovered, Samus heads to a place called the Biological Space Laboratories Space Station (called simply BSL); where an explosion was rocked the space station, and Samus attempting to get the removed peices of her Power Suit. Using a new, less iconic spaceship Samus lands on the BSL Space Station and is told by her new superior (which just happens to be a computer) to head toward the explosion site and investatge. Samus is told that because of the fact that she now has Metriod DNA she will no longer be infected by the X Parasites, but the drawback is that she can now be killed by Ice is she comes into contact with an Ice Beam or a Frozen Enviornment. Entering the site where the explosion took place to discover that the same creature from SR388 is outside the capsule. Samus kills it and discovers that the Yellow X can now heal her. Samus heads toward the Navigation Room and is told by The Computer that a large amount of X Parasites are gathering in a nearby location, but is told to get a Missile download first before heading to the X Parasite gathering place. Samus downloads the Missile upgrade, heads toward the gathering place (killing other X infected creatures in the process), and encounters a large creature that is more difficult to kill then the other X Creatures she had faced before. Samus kills the creature and absorbs a large X Parasite which ends up holding the Morph Ball Upgrade and Samus can now use the Morph Ball ability. Samus heads back to the Navigation Room and is told by The Computer that the X Parasites have infected the Sectors Capsules and that they are using the particular enviornment to use them to reproduce. The Computer tells Samus to head to Sector 1 which is Planet SR388 Type Environment as the X are a major issue in that area. Samus heads toward toward the Sector Capsules and after getting onto the elevator an explosion erupts and shockenly another Samus appears, knocks out the elevator, and destroys the doorway you just came. Samus; only heaing the explosion enters Sector 1 and defeats the X there and gains the High Jump and Morph Ball Bomb Ability from another X Boss. Samus heads back to the Navigation Room and is told by The Computer that the Samus look a like caused the explosion that realised the X Parasites. Calling it SA-X; The Computer tells Samus that the SA-X is the infected peices of her Power Suit, recreated and mimicing Samus at full power. Samus is also told that the SA-X is equiped with the Ice Beam and to run away if she encounters the SA-X to run as the Ice Beam would kill her. The Computer tells Samus to head toward Sector 2 to unlock Security Gate 1. Samus heads to Sector 2, unlocks Security Gate 1, gains more abilities, and encounters SA-X, but luckly SA-X doesn't notice her and leaves the area. Samus is told to head toward Sector 4 to fight and kill another X Parasite Boss, where upon killing the creature gains another ability. Samus is then told to head to Sector 3 to download another ability and encounters a rogue Security Bot, but before she can finish kill it, the Bot flees. Much of the story repeats like this so I'll just post the important plot elements. At some point in the game Samus is send to download the Varia suit, which will allow her to survive in harsh enviornments thus negating the side effect of the Metriod Serum. But before Samus can download the data, an X Monster ends up downloading the Varia Suit; transforming into a more Monsterous version of an X Parasite. Upon defeating it, Samus gets the Varia Suit. Later on in the Game, The Computer sends Samus to find survivors that have been detected inside the Space Station; but Samus discovers that they are only alien creatures (which look like 3 Monkeys, a Dodo Bird, and a baby bird.) At some point in the game Samus is told that SA-X can most likely be injured by a Plasma Beam weapon, but that it will take sometime before the Plasma Beam can be download. However, later on Samus ends up fighting a "Chozo" creature and gains the Plasma Beam Weapon. Later on Samus is told to fight against a Military Weapon called "Nightmare". In one of the hardest battles in the game; Samus defeats Nightmare and unlocks the Gravity Suit. After beating Nightmare, Samus is told that the Security Bot from before has been found and is killed. While traveling back, Samus discovers a Metriod breeding lab and later on finds the SA-X trying to kill the Metriods, but it becomes stunned when 3 Metriods lash onto it. Samus escapes the Metriod Breeding Lab just as the Lab is injected from the Space Station and explodes, kill the Metriods and SA-X. The Computer tells Samus that she had defined orders. The Computer then tells Samus that the SA-X that was destroyed was not the only one; in fact their are about 10 SA-X on board since they reproduce asexually. The Computer tells Samus to leave the area quickly. Samus then ends up facing Ridley, defeats him in another intense battle and gains the Screw Attack Ability. Samus heads back to the Navigation Room, but she downloads the Diffusion Missile weapon, completely upgrading her Missile Weapon. When she arrives at the Navigation Room, The Computer tells her that her mission is complete and that she can leave the Space Station. Samus is then told that the Galatic Federation intends on capturing the X Parasites and SA-X's and turn them into weapons. Shocked by this Samus attempts to leave the Navigation Room, but The Computer has sealed the area preventing her from escaping and activating the Self-Destruct system. The Computer then tells her that activating the Self-Destruct system won't kill all the X Parasites and that she should cause the Space Station to collide with SR388. The Computer then reveals itself to be designed after her old dead boss "Adam" and opens the Navigation Room doors. Samus heads toward the control panel to cause the Space Station to collide; but an SA-X stops her from activating the control panel. After a fierce battle, the SA-X is defeated; but leaves the area before Samus can absorb it. Samus activates the control panel and heads to her ship, but a surviving Omega Metroid erupts and attacks Samus, nearly killing her. Just as the Omega Metroid is about to kill her; Samus is saved by the SA-X who she had just defeated before. Since the SA-X is equiped with the Ice Beam; the SA-X wounds the Omega Metroid, but the Omega Metroid kills the SA-X and allows Samus to absorb it; gaining the Ice Beam and a Orange Colored Suit. Samus kills the Omega Metroid and escapes just in time before the Space Station crashes. Overall I give the Story a 10.

Depth: The one part of Metriod Fusion that is lacking is depth. Yes you can get upgrades to your Health, Missiles, and Power Bomb; but once you collect all the upgrades; you don't have much to do afterward. Overall I give the Depth a 7.

Difficulty: Metriod Fusion at least to me is very tough. Bosses like The Security Bot, Nightmare, Ridley, SA-X, and The Omega Metriod are some of the hardest bosses to beat if you don't have a lot of Missiles and Health. But after those 5 bosses; the other bosses and minor enemies are not tough to beat; but they are still unique and fun to kill. Something I should point out as because we are playing on a Keyboard, you can only hold down 2 buttons. So lets say your aiming upward to shot missiles at Ridley; he injures you, forcing you out of your shooting spot. Because you can't move, aim, and shoot all at the same time it can become very difficult you those types of fights. Overall I give the difficulty a 10.

Closing Arguements: Overall Metroid Fusion is a great Game Boy Advanced Game to play with amazing graphics, challenging bosses, and an intense story. Overall I give Metroid Fusion a 9.8.

I hope you guys enjoy my review and if you have any questions please feel free to post below in the thread. Thank you for reading!

Metroid Fusion Game Description

Metroid Fusion is the direct sequel to 1994's Super Metroid. The game begins as Samus Aran is sent back to planet SR388 to assist a Biologic Space Labs investigation team. While on the planet's surface, Samus is infected by a previously unknown parasite, known as X. The X parasite nearly kills Samus, but fortunately she is saved by a vaccine made from the Metroid she saved on Zebes. Shortly thereafter, an explosion rocks the Biologic Space Labs. Now Samus must investigate the Space Labs, which are orbiting SR388.

This game is similar, in terms of gameplay and structure, to the classic side-scrolling Metroid games. The game consists of a large inter-connected environment. As Samus learns a variety of new moves and weapons, she is able to explore new areas of the Space Lab and unlock the secrets of the X parasite.
