Mega Man Battle Network 5 Team Colonel Review by: chaoscontrolx - 9.7/10

Battle Network 5. The real Network.
With each Battle Network installment, (Excluding 4 that is) each game has to improve on what the others have lacked in right? That's just the inhabitant way of video games no? Well you're completely correct. That is exactly what this game did. Even compared to the brother game, Team ProtoMan, this game is much better than the last. In most aspects, it does it's job to complete what others have failed. Now let's jump into Mega Man Battle Network 5: Team Colonel!

Plot: The plot of this game is exactly like it was in Team Protoman, but with a little more flavor text and interesting dialogue. Think of it as Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past. Two different games but Ocarina of Time has more flavor and engaging things. Now let's summarize this guy up.

Taking place after Battle Network 4, a scientist name "Regal" from the previous installment makes an organization named Nebula. Like we haven't had enough of those yet... His plan is to take over the Internet or "Net" and surprisingly he succeeds. Or at least he would've with one vital object. Lan's Pet.  So now what? Is the game over? Of course not. Because we have two guys (and a bunch of others) whose names and Lan and Mega Man! Anyways, the Official Net Battlers devise a strategy. One that involves gathering a team of members and their Navis and working together to liberate the captured areas. Sounds fun right? Well... Yes and no... But that's something for another category. On their adventure, Lan and MegaMan ask and recruit many members and their powerful/useful Navis! Some better than others from TP, and some worse.

Well now. Not such a problem there now was it? Great. Now I can cover the big guys. First and foremost, let's cover the Game Play.

Game Play: Now you may be asking. How does this game compare with the rest of the franchise or even Mega Man Zero for that matter? It's a Mega Man game so what's up here? See, Mega Man Battle Network has a different style of game play. It is played through virus busting and Net Battles with other Navis. It goes something like this.

So as Lan, you run through the real world. You can find clues to progress the story, buy stuff, talk to other humans and challenge Net Battlers, and jack in to the internet to many electrical appliances. Now that's where Mega Man comes in. When you jack in, MegaMan, your Personal Net Navi is sent into the internet. Unlike Lan, you run in the cybernetic world and encounter viruses which can be quite annoying to get past unless you are stocked up on Sneak Run. It's no contest that being in the real world as Lan is much more bearable.

Now let's get started on Natbattles. When you are MegaMan, 5 or more random chips are set in your folder. You can chose a number of chips depending on the code, and the chip itself. For example, if you have 2 sword chips, you can select them together. However if you have a sword and a cannon, you can't select them together if they aren't the same code. If a chip has a * code, it can go with any chip. So strategy is a huge factor in this game. You need a good sense of it if you are ever going to get far. This also applies to Net Navi battles. They are generally harder to fight then viruses so you will need some good strategies, let alone chips.

Another thing is, types. Similar to Pokemon, Navis and viruses alike may have special types. With each type, comes a weakness of course. The most common type match-up in existence, Water - Fire. Use a water chip on a fire chip and double the damage! Just make sure you have good accuracy. They are generally faster too.

Well we got Net Battles covered... But wait. There is one thing I haven't covered yet... Yes. The glaring thing that makes this the black sheep of the series. The liberation missions. Remember how I said these missions are a good and a bad? Well, it takes a certain mind to like this game. Take Zelda 2 for example. That game and it's extreme difficulty compared to this and it's liberation missions.

I've heard that these missions are a direct turn off for some. Also that it's the only reason people find this game infamous. It ended up really bad on some of people's lists, but if you can look past that you can find this game really good. Ok... Let's cover this one up.

So basically, you and your team of Navis have to liberate the red panels using special moves or by simply liberating one panel. You must destroy the dark panels and destroy the darkloid himself. After doing so, depending on how many phases you took compared to the target faze you may get a chip, and SP chip, or zennys, the currency of this series. Not so complicated right? Wrong. You have to do this perfect with a great strategy. Get every corner right or you might end up being deleted. Don''t be afraid to use Order Point (the points need to use special moves) by all means, but don't overuse them either. They are essential to the game and it's hard to go without them. Of course if you are a pro you can 1 turn-liberation the whole thing on problem. However like I said, if you are a pro.

Addictiveness: It's completely addictive and everything adds up. Mostly. I can see why most find this game very playable. More than 4 of course but not as much as the others seeing as the liberation missions can be turn-offs. Making this installment less addictive than most of the most. With an original concept such as this however, you can't go wrong. That is why this series still lives on in our hearts today. This category is left a bit short however because the the stuff that make this game addictive will be left for the Depth. I recommend you try this game out if your looking for a good retro game that will leave you hanging for more.

Depth: For a Battle Network game, this hasn't really added anything new that 4 hasn't already covered. But for the new generation of BN games, where things go, there are Double Souls, and of course Liberation missions. Double Soul is a mechanic that involves MegaMan's soul connecting with each of his teammates. Allowing him to make himself a basic copy of them with a compatible chip. Take Knightman for example. If I were to use a cracking chip, the "Unite Button" would appear and I could press it to become a KnightMan version of Mega Man, allowing to use KnightMan's charge attack.

But wait. I'm forgetting something else aren't I? Yes I am. How about oh... Everything obtainable after beating the final boss? It all gets deep from here. More liberation missions, More SP chips and DS chips, dark chips, Navi Battles, programs. So many factors to consider. it's unbelievable. Every battle Network game offers so much more when you complete the first game. So if you loved the depth that is contained in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, this won't fail you at all!
Also admittedly my statement in my previous review was contradictory to that of this, but I was blind to the depth this game really had to offer.

Graphics: The MMBN game graphics have always been outstanding for their times. But ever since 4, the graphics are so much more now. They are much more detailed, colorful, and interesting. Take the first 3. While they were great graphics, some of the backgrounds were a bit dull and boring. The graphics and backgrounds in this game are much more lively and engaging. Just take a look at the cybernetic world and the bosses!

Difficulty: This game isn't that hard. I can seriously say that with a straight face. It's disappointing really. Especially for a Mega Man game. The only real challenge I get is from the Final Boss. And even then it isn't the hardest thing I've seen. it's just how the Battle Network series flows I guess.

Fairness: This isn't on their... What is this category? This is a category based around the liberation missions. I must take a note of this. So, let's take the Net Navis from Team ProtoMan and Team Colonel. Look at Napalm Man. Now look at Tomahawk Man. Napalm Man has a ridiculously, an insane amount of range. About of to 5-6 squares ahead. Now for Tomahawk man. His move is a lot wider. Not nearly as far though, That;s not fair is it? Well actually it is. Now take a look and Colonel and Protoman. Proto Soul's charge attack is wide sword as if his special attack. Now for Colonel, his charge attack has infinite range and his special  attack has better range than wide sword. This for that am I right?

Look audience. If your going to try out a battle Network game, start off with Battle Network 5. It's one of the best BN games to date and you will be highly satisfied. While Team ProtoMan was a great game, it just doesn't hold up with that of Team Colonel. Playing this game will definitely give you a run for your money. So get on your computer and play the heck out of this game!

Mega Man Battle Network 5 Team Colonel Game Description

Lan and Mega Man return in the fifth entry to the Battle Network series of games. In this sequel, a mysterious group is distributing Dark Navi chips in the hope of corrupting Navis worldwide. Lan and his friends must storm the Dark Chip Factory and put a stop to this problem before it becomes any worse.

The game uses an RPG style over-world in which Lan and Mega Man navigate and interact. In the real world, you control Lan, and can interact with objects and talk to people. When you need to enter cyberspace, you 'jack-in', and take control of Mega Man. Mega Man must also battle viruses in addition to navigating through the internet. This is done with a combination of action and turn-based battle, where you select powerful chips to give you an edge each turn, then use the chips and dodge shots in realtime.

The game also features Liberation Missions, which are a more traditional turn-based style of play. In this mode, you must 'liberate' dark tiles on your way to confront the boss. Liberation Missions play somewhat like a complicated game of chess, with the player actually fighting the battles between the pieces.

Unique to this version of the game is the ability to play as Colonel partway through the story. The game can also link up to Mega Man Battle Network 5: Team Protoman to trade and complete your battle chip collection - certain chips are only available in one version of the game.

Z-Saber can be obtained two ways: one as the prize for the sixth liberation mission for completing it within eight phases, and the other is for getting through the door in Nebula Hole 4 that requires you to have a non-customizer HP of 900.

Man... Tried disconnecting my internet connection than spamming chip trader assuming it wouldn't save unless reconnected. When I didn't get what I wanted after a ton of spam I exited the game without reconnecting. Reconnected and restarted but it saved -
