Mega Man & Bass Review by: tornadocam - 9/10

Mega Man and Bass Remake
Mega Man and Bass was made for the Super Nintendo. However, it was not know to American gamers till the remake was made for Game Boy Advance. The Original version came out in 1998 and was only available in Japan as it was one of the last SNES games.  I believe, 5 or 6 years later the game was remade for the GBA. This falls into the category of the remake file. So, I will be reviewing the GBA version and comparing it to the original version.

Story: 9

The story was left unchanged in this version. King a new powerful robot has created an army of robot masters to take over the world. King's goal is to conquer the world and enslave the humans. Mega Man quickly goes out to stop King's madness and defeat his new King Robot army. Bass also goes out to defeat King because humans made robots. But Bass main purpose is to defeat King to prove he is the most powerful robot ever built. The two characters each with different goals head out to take down king. Each character discovers different things among the way.

I really liked the plot in this game so I was glad they did not tamper with the originals plot. The player can chose to play as either Mega Man or Bass. Each character will have a different story as I mentioned above. Mega Man goes out to stop King and save the Humans. Meanwhile, Bass heads out because humans made robots but its clear he wants to prove he is the strongest robot ever. I like games that have sub plots and different story lines. It reminds me of the Mega Man X games X4- X8 were you have a different storyline depending on which character you choose. Overall, I felt like this story showed creativity and introduced something new to the series. I give the plot (storyline) a solid rating of 9 out of 10. In my review of the original I also gave the storyline a 9 out of 10. So, no big change here.

Graphics and Controls 8

In the original game the graphics were very smooth and as good as it gets game wise. So, how does the GBA version compare to the original? The graphics and controls suffered a little bit in the GBA version. The colors and backgrounds remained unchanged in the GBA version. The sprites though look like they are a little bit off in this version. I have to wonder if it was because they were converted from the SNES to the smaller GBA screen. Sometimes Mega Man or Bass can look a little fuzzy. Also in some of the stages there is some lag that occurs. The original game did not have these lags. I want to believe the lags is due to this being remade from the GBA.

The controls also suffered a little bit. The original game had very smooth controls. In fact, I argued in my review of the original game that the controls did not get much better. This version's controls seem to be sluggish at times. It seems like it effects Mega Man more than Bass. But, even Bass seems more sluggish in this game then the original. Again, I wonder if that is due to the game being remade for a different system. The controls are still good overall just not as good as they were in the original. The controls are pretty basic in this version. But I was really shocked how sluggish the controls were. I would expect that if this was going from the SNES to older game boy versions. The GBA runs just like the SNES does. I thought they would have the same graphics and controls. The graphics and controls are different in the game. Do not get me wrong they are still good just not as good as the original version. Thus, I give the graphics in this remake a 8 out of 10

Sound: 8

The original version of this game had very awesome sound. The music was golden, the sounds the players and enemies make is also solid gold. The sound in the GBA version was still good but not quite as sharp. The first obvious difference is the music. The stage themes are still the same but do not sound as clear as they did in the SNES version. I still like the stage music in this game. However, I did notice some tingles in some of the stages. In fact, some of the stage themes sounded like they had been slowed down. I guess that was due to Capcom converting this game to the GBA. The players sounds has been altered slightly too. Mega Man's Buster no longer sounds like a cannon when the player fully charges it. It has bee replaced with a pow sound. It still lets the player know their shots are doing damage but I liked the cannon sound. Bass's sound was not really changed that much. His main weapon still sounds like a machine gun.

Do not get me wrong the music and sounds in this game are still good. I still found a lot of the stages to have awesome music. The enemies still make their sounds to let the player know they mean business. I just noticed some of the stage themes had been slowed down and some of the sounds changed. Due to the changes and slower pace of the music that brings the rating down just a bit. I give the GBA version's sound rating a good 8 out of 10.

Replay Value (Addicitveness): 8

Mega Man and Bass is a very addictive game. It has high replay value. It is often fun to play the game with a different character. I have played this game through as Bass and again as Mega Man. This remake is fun to play. But, I will be honest and admit I play the original game more than I do this remake. The original just had a special charm to it that is hard to duplicate. But when I can't play the original this is a nice substitute. The reasons I go to the original game more then I do this one should be obvious. The originals sound, graphics, depth and difficulty was just so special. Still, I give the replay value of this game an 8 out of 10.

Depth: 10

The depth of this game remained unchanged from the original. There are several items to collect. The player can also collect bolts to buy items as well. A lot of the items are hidden in stages so it requires the player to revisit stages. In fact, to get all the items several stages will need to be revisited more than once. You also have a side quest in this game and that is collect discs that contain robot master profiles. Another way this game has depth is you can chose who to play the through as. For me personally I like to play the game through as Mega Man and then play it again as Bass. Each character has their own strengths. I was glad they did not tamper with the depth in this game. I give the depth the same rating I did the original a 10 out of 10.

Difficulty: 10

In my review of the original version. I stated how this was one of the most difficult games I ever played. The only game I can think of that is harder than this game is Battle Toads. So how difficult is the GBA version. To be frank, the difficulty was not changed. This game is still difficult. There are so many ways this game is difficult. First of all the enemy placement in this game can be a nightmare. Enemies will hit you off the screen, come out of pits and hit you from behind. Second, the enemy shots do a lot of damage to your player. Some enemy shots will take take 6 bars off of your characters life bar ouch. The Robot Masters are also very tough to beat. A lot of the Robot Masters are very fast, have devastating attacks, and they are hard to hit. It should be noted that just like Mega Man 8 there are no energy tanks refill your life bar. You will loose lots of lives in this game you can count on that.

Another thing that adds to the difficulty is special weapons use a lot of energy. So you will need to use them wisely. Moreover, the items are in difficult places and are surrounded by traps. You will need to use creativity to get all the items. It should be noted that the difficulty is the same for Mega Man or Bass. So neither one has it easy in this game. The game does not really do a lot to help you out either. I really like games like this that test your skills, test your reflexes, creativity and a little bit of luck to beat. As it should be no surprise. I give the difficulty a 10 out of 10.

Overall rating: 9

The GBA version is the version that most America and Canadian gamers are familiar with. The original was a Japanese version only as it was one of the last SNES games. Some Players were able to play the original version. This version came out I want to think in 2003 or 2004. I will say this was a nice remake overall. However, it did have some issues.

The main issues with this game are the graphics and sounds. I want to think that is due to the game being converted from the SNES to the Game Boy Advance. On the other hand, I was shocked that would be a difference. The GBA players similar to the SNES so I do not know why the graphics and sound had their issues. My guess would be because the GBA uses a smaller screen and Capcom had to make tweaks to get it to work.

The original as I have stated several times had a special charm to it. The SNES version had awesome graphics and sound. This version had good graphics and sound but I could really tell the difference. The graphics at time especially the sprites seem to get out of whack sometimes. There are also some noticeable lags in the game that the original did not have. The controls can be sluggish at times, which can get you hit or knocked into a pit in this game. The sound is good but not like the original game. The stage themes are still unique but have been slowed down and some have tingles in them. I also mentioned Mega Man's buster shot sound effects had been changed. Due to the issues I still play this version but I find myself playing the SNES version more.

Now enough with the negatives lets look at the positives. Aside from the issues I mentioned above Capcom did a good job remaking this game. The plot, depth and difficulty were left unchanged. Those three really added quality to the original and they add quality to this game. I was glad to see those areas were not tampered with. The player can either play as Mega Man or Bass. Each character has their own strengths and not so great areas. A good example is Bass can double jump while Mega Man cannot. Mega Man can fire a powerful charged shot from his buster where as Bass has a machine gun like cannon. Basically what one character is not good at the other makes up for it. However, once you chose a character you are stuck with that character. This makes the game more fun as you need to play the game through using a different character.

In my review of the original game I gave the overall rating a 9.6 or a 9.7 games did not get much better than that. So how does the remake hold up? I give the overall rating a solid 9. The issues the graphics and sound have bring the rating down a little bit. To some gamers these are minor issues and are no big deal. If these issues do not bother you this is a good solid game overall. Especially for those that did not get to play the SNES Japanese version. So would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game. The GBA version is a great game for those that for whatever reason missed out on the original. However, while I recommend this game. I will also recommend that gamers play the original version too.

Happy Gaming and Blessings in Christ.
