Mega Man Xtreme Review by: Hidden Phantom - 8.2/10

Megaman Xtreme: Remake...sort of...
This is a game that I debated if it even existed, until of course, I found it buried deep under the piles of mediocrity in the Retro Game Room.  And now, having played it, I believe that it deserves at least some credit, more than it has to this date, might I add.

Graphics: 8
This game, at first glance, may receive a mocking form of criticism by those who compare it to Megaman X, or even Megaman games remade for the Gameboy Advance.  This, of course, is a Gameboy Color game, and the graphics for this game in particular are pretty decent, surpassing many, many Gameboy Color games I have played.  Overall, they are pretty good, but they still have flaws.

Sound: 9
This game has terrific sound.  The original soundtracks of Megaman X are included (which I praised GREATLY in my past review of X), all in the classic and signature Gameboy fashion.  Honestly, they did a good job taking a master soundtrack and implanting it into a Gameboy Color game.  Plus, they even have Zero's theme.  How greater can you get with soundtrack?  Ok, you can get better, but not MUCH better.

Addictiveness: 7
Meh, this component wasn't rated very high because I played it, shut down my computer, and haven't played it since.  I guess how little of a remake it is of the original Megaman X compels you, when given a choice of X and this, to pick the original.  They say that the sequel is never as good as the original.  The Mega Man franchise shatters this concept, but let's change it to specifically a game and it's remake.  There, that works now.  This game just doesn't make you want to play it...again.

Story: 10
The story is pretty cool, I must admit. (Doesn't come CLOSE to rivaling Megaman Zero's story, but that's a different review)  Basically, data from Mavericks from the past that X has already beat have returned and are wreaking havoic...again.  So, it's up to X to travel into the cyber world thingy and beat them into submission again.  Well, four of them. On hard mode the other four make an appearance, and in Xtreme mode, you battle all of them.  However, the best part of the story by far is that in the first stage, when you fight revived Vile, you can beat him first battle!  So satisfying!

Depth: 7
This game has a stage select screen with only four bosses for two out of three of the game modes.  So yeah.  Not a lot to offer there...the only BIG thing I have to complain about is the auto save shining pillar thingys.  They are annoying if you get stuck in a bad position in the stage, and have messed up my game by putting me in a bad position twice now.  So annoying.

Difficulty: 8
This game is pretty difficult, mostly due to the lack of a dash key, good controls in terms of reaction time, and poor accuracy for the mega buster.  In all, this is a pretty difficult game, but not hard enough to stab you and laugh as you fall to the ground. (That's Castlevania's job)

So, overall, this is a pretty decent game, but you should probably stick to Megaman X for the time being.
Hope you enjoyed!

how do you unlock zero scramble?
ARedLetterDay 05-01-13 - 05:58 AM
It isn't a remake - it actually takes place in the series. Thus, you can't say play the "original" Mega Man X and say it's better, considering it's two different games.

because the game is for the GameBoy Color, that must have been the only color they could give them
