Mega Man - Googie's Mega Mix Game Description

This was Googie’s first attempt at MM1 hacking, this hack throws Mega Man in all new different levels that are more challenging than the original levels. There’s also some text changes in here too. So if you’re up for a Mega Man challenge, try out this hack. There’s also some minor graphics editing in here too, like the weapons and energy capsules were change into capsules from Mega Man 2. Enjoy.

Mega Man - Googie's Mega Mix Review by: tornadocam - 6.5/10

Mega Man Mix
Time for another review. This time I will be reviewing Mega Man Gooies Mix. Mix is a hack of the original Mega Man game also known as Mega Man 1. Mega Man I was the first Mega Man game. It was the debut of Mega Man. Mega Man would go on to be one of the popular video game franchises of all time. So it should be no surprise they are a lot of hacks out there. Lets see how Mix compares to the original game.

Story: 9

The story was left unchanged from the original game. Dr. Light and Dr. Wily are two of the world's top scientists in the field of Robotics. Both win awards though Light wins more. The duo makes 9 robots. Proto Man, Rock, Roll, and 6 other robots. These robots are designed to help humans. Rock & Roll are lab robots. One day Dr. Wily took the 6 robots and reprogrammed them to try to conquer the world. Rock having a sense of Justice is converted by Dr. Light into the super fighting robot Mega Man. Dr. Light sends Mega Man out to stop the carnage.

Okay the first game's plot was not as good as some of future plots. However, it is decent and does a good job introducing the characters very well. I think it is a simple plot that establishes Mega Man pretty well. So I will give it a 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 6

Mega Man 1 had nice colors to it. The problem was the glitches, bugs and fuzziness. This version has different colors. The colors go very well with the stages. I really like how the stages are more clear than the original game. The sprites are much improved from the original game. Some of the glitches have been fixed which is nice.

However the controls have not really improved. Mega Man Gooies Mix still suffers the same problem the first game had. The controls feel sluggish at times other times they go to fast. Also it seems like they are times were the game lags just like the first version. I was really hoping with the graphics improved. The controls would be improved too. But that is not the case here. As a result I can't really give the graphics and controls a higher rating than a 6. It is a slight improvement from the original's graphics and controls.

Sound: 7

The sound was left unchanged. Some of the tunes are very memorable. Elec Man, Ice Man and Fire Man's themes are my favorite from the original game. Enemy shots sound okay and so does Mega Man's buster. The problem is the first game had tingles in the sound. So I was curious to see if this game had tingles. Other Mega Man 1 hacks I have played did away with the tingles. Other hacks to me is what the game should have sounded like. But this version uses the same sound as the original. So yeah they are still tingles in the sound. That really hurts the rating. I give the sound a 7 out of 10. They are some good tunes but it is not like other mega man games. Also as I stated other hacks of the original game did away with tingles. Why this version still had tingles I do not know? Maybe the maker was using older software.

Replay Value and Depth: 5

It is always fun to play Mega Man games. I enjoy playing Mega Man games. But I will be honest I did not have as much fun playing this game as I do other Mega Man games. Other Mega Man games and even some hacks have a lot going for them. A lot of the great Mega Man games & Hacks have very good graphics, controls, music, depth, and the right difficulty. This version to me felt like I was playing Mega Man 1. I really did not think there was a huge improvement from the original game. The original game was alright it wasn't a horrible game. It is just that it had some flaws in it that hurt the replay value compared to other games. That is the main problem with this version. It still has flaws in it that I put it just a step above the original game.

Surprisingly the depth was left unchanged from the original game. There are still a few secret items to collect. However, Mega Man I was not known for its depth. Mega Man 2 established the tradition of Mega Man games having high amounts of depth to them. Mega Man I and this version do not have that many branching paths like futue mega Man games did. They also don't have a lot of secret areas. Now with that being said the stages are pretty long in this game just like the original version. So it will take a while to master. Thus, I give the depth a middle of the road rating 5 out of 10.

Difficulty: 10

Well the original game was difficult mainly due to the glitches. In the original game it was so easy to land on a platform and fall through. Other hacks corrected that problem. So how does this version's difficulty rank? Well this game was brutal for the right and wrong reasons. I will start off why this game is difficult for the right reasons.

The stage layouts have been changed. The maker or makers of this game put in lots of pits and spikes. Not to mention enemies often hang around them waiting to send you to your doom. I died a lot falling into a pit or getting hit by an enemy landing into the pits. Spikes as I stated are plentiful in this game so you will die a lot by spikes. The enemies in this game just love to gang up on you, and knock you into the pit. Moreover, the enemies shots do more damage than they did in the original game. The bosses move faster and their attacks pack a punch.

On the other hand the game is difficult for the wrong reasons. To add to the difficulty is the issue with the controls. It is so easy for the controls to be sluggish sending you right into a pit. Also they can change speeds and cause Mega Man to move way too fast. This will also get you hit or into a pit. It is really hard to judge how far you need to jump in this game. The issues with the controls make that very tricky. It felt like I was fighting the enemies along with the controls. It is never good when you feel like your having to fight the controls.

Therefore, I give Mega Man Mix a 10 out of 10. I like games that offer a challenge, require skills, creativity and luck to beat. To me that makes conquering them an accomplishment. But I like games to be difficult for the right reasons. While this version has some of those good reasons as I mentioned. It is also difficult for the wrong reasons. Controls should never ever contribute to the difficulty of a game. But in this case they do big time. I think of my favorite Mega Man games that were difficult it seems like they earned their high difficulty rating. This one seems like it cheated to get a high school again due to the wrong reasons.

Overall: 6.5

Mega Man I was not a horrible game but not a good game. The game just had too many flaws. Other hacks of Mega Man I fixed those problems. Some of them that I have reviewed I have gave decent/good ratings of 8-8.9. So how does this version compare. Well to be honest not much different from the first game. This version feels like it has nothing new to offer and it still has some of the problems the first game had. But before I get into the negatives I will start with the positives.

I really liked how the backgrounds in the stages were changed. It seems like a lot of the colors are just darker versions of the original game's colors. I really liked that because it corrected the fuzziness the first game had. Second, I really did not mind the stage layouts it was like the maker or makers were trying to bring something new to the stages. I also like how the platform glitches were for the most part fixed. In addition, I also liked how my favorite themes from this game were not changed.

Now for the negatives. Despite some of the corrections this game had its flaws. The main issue is the controls. If the makers could fix the glitches then why could they not fix the controls? The controls are the same as the original game. One would fee like they were fighting the controls in the first game. That is the main problem here. I really expected the controls to be better. It makes me wonder of the makers were using older software. Also the game still lags in certain spots. The depth was not changed from the original game. I played a few hacks of the original game earlier this month. In those versions extra stuff was added. This version not so much. I also did not like how the controls and lags added to the difficulty.

Overall I give Mega Man Googies Mix a 6.5 out of 10. It is slightly better than the original game which was probably a 6 out of 10. Nothing really horrible but nothing special. I do not feel like the game is a huge step above the original game. Yes, I stated the problems had been fixed. But this game still has too many flaws for it to be a higher rating. Would I recommend this game? Well I will let you be the judge of that. If you like to play Mega Man games and your a novice player then you will probably want to play this. Sometimes its nice to go back and see were things started. On the other hand, they are better Mega Man hacks out there of the original game. Not to mention other Mega Man games/hacks are so much better than this. I will say this if your the type of player that gets frustrated easily then stay away from this one. Again I can't really say yes or no if I would recommend this game. So yeah 6.5 sounds about right. Not a real horrible game just nothing special. If the issues were corrected this game would earn a much higher rating.

Blessings in Christ and happy gaming
