Mega Man CD reviewIn 2014, a hacker known as Tomaitheous created a hack of the Blue Bomber's first game, Mega Man on the NES. The hack is called Mega Man CD, and it was made for the Turbo Graphx CD. How is this hack compared to Mega Man on NES? I'll tell you by making this review.
Graphics: 7/10 For the most part, the graphics in Mega Man CD are unchanged from the original. However, there is one major difference between the 2, and that's the title screen. Mega Man CD's title screen has a really interesting background, with Mega Man being in the center, and the robot masters being shown in capsules. It's far more interesting than the black background found in Mega Man for the NES. Other than the title screen, there's barely any differences between this hack's visuals and those from Mega Man for NES. Overall though, the graphics are still good for TGCD standards, so I'm giving the graphics a 7 out of 10.
Sound: 10/10 One of the first differences I noticed between the NES original and this hack was how amazing the soundtrack sounds in this version. Whether you're listening to the Dr. Wily stage theme, or you're listening to one of the game's other amazing remixed songs, Mega Man CD's soundtrack will blow you away. The only TGCD games that come close to having soundtracks as amazing as this game are the Ys games. For these reasons, I'm giving the sound a perfect 10! You won't find better music for the system.
Addictiveness: 8/10 Mega Man CD provides the same platforming action you'd expect from the series. As you progress through the game, you get to use abilities of the Robot Masters that you've beaten, and you can beat those robots in any order you want, which adds to the game's replay value. In addition, there's a great amount of variety between each level, with everything from a fire level to a winter themed level, Mega Man CD's levels are diverse and fun to play. Even someone such as myself who isn't a huge Mega Man fan can enjoy the gameplay in Mega Man CD. For these reasons, I'm giving the addictiveness an 8.
Story: 5/10 Mega Man CD's storyline is the same as in Mega Man for NES. Basically in this game, Dr. Light and his assistant Dr. Wily build 6 robots, known as Cutman, Gutsman, Iceman, Bombman, Fireman, Elecman, but Dr.Wily decides to use them for world domination. So Dr Light is forced to fight back by having his greatest invention, Mega Man. Can Mega Man defeat Dr. Wily and his robots? That all depends on your gaming skills. Compared to other video games, Mega Man CD's story is mediocre, for that reason, I'm giving this category a 5.
Depth: 7/10 In Mega Man CD, there are 10 total levels to go through. Six of the stages have the 6 robot masters (which you can complete in any order you wish), and the other 4 are part of Dr. Wily's Fortress. Each level can take a decent amount of time to complete, even if you're skilled at Mega Man games. In addition, there's an easy mode in this game, so if you play your first playthrough on easy mode, then replay it on normal mode, then it adds to this game's replay value. While there are games out there with more content, I'm still willing to give the depth a 7.
Difficulty: 8/10 Mega Man games seem to give me a lot of trouble, and Mega Man CD is no exception. Whether you're fighting the games brutal bosses, or going through the game's challenging levels, you're bound to have a hard time beating this game, unless you're a Mega Man expert. By no means is this among the hardest games in existence, but it's still very tough to complete. Because of that, I'm giving the difficulty an 8.
Overall Score: 8/10 If you haven't played the original Mega Man, or are simply wanting to have the same gameplay experience on a more advanced console, then Mega Man CD's a good game to play. With an incredible remixed soundtrack, good visuals, a good amount of content, and an easy mode, this is a perfect hack for people who aren't used to playing games from this series. Overall, Mega Man CD gets an 8 from me.
