Mega Man 7 Refit Game Description

Introducing “Mega Man 7 Refit,” a ROM hack which makes Mega Man 7 a little more like those old NES classics in a few minor, but significant ways:

Shorter charge times mean you can fire more Charged Shots more often! Teach those robots a lesson!
Increased invulnerability makes scooting across spikes much less tricky! Just don’t take too long!
Refreshed graphics, such as fonts which harken back to those old NES classics! It’s so old… it’s new!
Is there more? You’ll just have to play it and see!

Mega Man 7 Refit Review by: tornadocam - 9.2/10

Mega Man 7 Refit.
Mega Man 7 was the title that brought the classic series to the Super Nintendo. It was a hit for Capcom and the game was infamous for its great graphics and awesome music. Mega Man 7 came out in 1995 for Japan and came out in the USA in 1996. The SNES was still at its peak when this game came out. Mega Man 7, though is one of my favorite all time games in the classic series line. I bought this game right when it came out. It is still my favorite to play and I enjoy it to this day. Mega Man 7 Refit is a hack of the original game. So lets see how this one compares to the original.

Story: 9

The Story was left unchanged. After the events of Mega Man 6 Mega Man captured Dr. Wily. Wily was sentenced for his crimes and goes to jail. Wily though knew there was a chance he would get caught someday. So the doctor had a backup plan. If he was away for a while new robots would activate and begin to search for him. That is what happens new Robot Masters activate and attack the city. Mega Man is called to the scene but he soon sees the robots bust Wily out of Jail. Dr. Light tells Mega Man to follow Wily. Along the way Mega Man meets Bass and Treble two new robots. Just who are they, what is their purpose and who made them. Mega Man heads out to stop Wily again, defeat the Robots and find out who is Bass as well as whose side is he on.

Okay I liked it the plot was not changed. Mega Man 7 had an awesome plot. I personally thought 7 was one of the more detailed plots in the classic line well except for Mega Man V for Game Boy. I really think the game did a good job of introducing Bass and Treble. I also like that there is some mystery and suspense involved. So since the story was left unchanged it gets a solid 9.

Graphics and Controls: 10

The graphics were for the most part left unchanged. Now they were a few minor changes. The font size in the text is much bigger. I personally liked that not that there was anything wrong with the original texts. Also Mega Man sprites when he is charging up move fast that is due to the buster not taking so long to charge. Other than those two things the graphics are the same. I think Mega Man 7 had some of the best graphics of the SNES games. The backgrounds are amazing and so are the colors. The Sprites are amazing too. I really liked how the graphics just seem to come together in this game.

The Controls have been changed a little bit. Mega Man does not take as long to charge. So when you want a charged shot you can do it faster. Mega Man 7 had some of the best controls. Mega Man moves run very smooth. This is how controls are supposed to be, no lags, no sluggish controls, and no changing speeds. I give the refit version a 10 out of 10 same as the original version.

Sound: 10

Did I mention how Mega Man 7 had the best soundtrack in my opinion of the classic series? Well it is true. I liked every theme in this game. Freeze Man, Cloud Man, Slash Man, Turbo Man and all Wily stages are my favorite themes. The tunes are just that good. Also the sounds in the game are amazing. Mega Man buster sounds cool when he fires it. This lets you know your buster fully charged packs a punch. The sounds the enemies make are also nicely done. This is how sound is supposed to be in a game. This hack did not change any of that. So again I give it a 10 out of 10.

Replay Value: 9

I had fun playing this game. This game is very close to the original game. Except for a few changes. One of the changes though brings the replay value down a hair. What brings this game's replay value down a rating is the difficulty being changed (more on that in a bite). I really liked Mega Man 7 original difficulty. I thought it was just right. So I will be honest I play the original version more because its the original. With that being said this game is a close second. Therefore, it gets a 9 out of 10.

Depth: 10

The amount of depth was for the most part left unchanged. Mega Man 7 (Original) had a lot of depth to it. They were bolts to find for currency, secret items to locate, hidden rooms, and very long stages. The original game took a long time to beat. It is a good thing they give you passwords. I really liked the depth in the original game. It was fun to have to go back to every stage to get the stages secrets. Also the longer stages made the game more enjoyable. This version really did not change that. The only thing is the secret items are easier to find. In the original version it required creativity. This version still requires that but its now obvious were the player needs to go. Still at the end of the day I give the depth a 10.

Difficulty: 6

If Mega Man 7 refit suffers its due to the difficulty being toned down a lot. The original game was difficult but doable. In the original game the difficulty require problem solving, reflexes, creativity and a little bit of luck to beat. The original game was challenging but in the right way. I want to think I gave the original an 8 or a 9 in terms of difficulty. This version is basically an easy version of Mega Man 7.

The game still had its tricky spots. They are still lots of pits and spikes galore in this game. One slip up and you will die. Also enemy placement can still be a problem in this game. A lot of stages enemies will gang up on you. In addition, a few of the bosses can really challenge you.

But, the game does a lot to help you out. First of all, Mega Man's buster no longer takes that long to charge. This can clear out enemies in a hurry. It also gives the player a huge advantage in boss fights. Speaking of boss fights, bosses take more damage than they did in the original game. So if you can dodge the attacks and use the faster quick charge. You will have an easier time. Moreover, the hidden items are still hidden but this version gives you clues were to go to find them. I should also add Mega Man has more invincible time after getting hit. This allows you to get into tight areas longer such as going over spikes. I noticed in this game that enemy shots do not hurt as much in this game.

Due to this reasons it brings the difficulty down somewhat. As I stated the original game had the right difficulty in my opinion. Now to some gamers this would not be an issue. In fact to some it could be a relief. But for me I like games that challenge you. It makes beating them feel like an accomplishment. Since the game still has trick7 spots I give it a 5 out of 10. Middle of the road rating seems about right

Overall Rating 9.2

The Original Mega Man 7 was a blown away type of game it was that good. It is still one of my favorites to play. This game was a fun game to play. It maintained a lot of the original's feel mainly in the plot, graphics, and sound. Though this game did have some negatives. I will start with the positives.

I will start off by saying I am so glad they did not change the story in this game. Mega Man 7 had an awesome and very detailed story to it. So there was no need to change anything. The graphics and sprites only had minor changes. The sound was just amazing I often paused the game so I could listen to the music. I found the music to be upbeat and so relaxing. I was concerned that the controls might have been altered since this is a hack. I was wrong the controls are smooth just like the original game was.

Now for the negatives. I really do not know how I really feel about the secret items being more obvious. They are not in plain view but the game has hints were you need to go or look for the items in. It doesn't really make me want to lower the rating. But it kind of seems like it takes a little fun out of having to look for them by searching the stage real good. The main negative is the difficulty being lowered. I know some gamers would not mind that. Some would probably be relived that the difficulty was toned down. I though did not really like that. It seem like it took some charm that the original Mega Man 7 had. I felt like I was playing a simple hack of an original game. They are hacks of the original games called Simple. In the Simple hacks the difficulty is very easy. That is what it seems like it was here. Enemies do not hurt as much and buster shots do a lot of damage. Another thing that I found missing was the recoil of the buster was gone. I liked the recoil in Mega Man 7 it reminded me of Mega Man IV for Game Boy's recoil. The recoil lets the player know their shots are powerful. So It was a bummer to see that be done away with.

Overall rating a 9.2. I give this hack a solid 9.2. Despite the games negatives it is a real solid hack of the Original game. It makes me think the maker of this hack took time to develop them. They could have just done the difficulty better. On the other hand maybe the maker was trying to make this a more easier version for those that found the original tougher.  I had fun playing this game. I would also like to note the negatives in this game is probably not negatives for everyone. Some may even see this game as an improvement. Not that the original needed to be improved. You should not let my negatives discourage you from playing this game.

Would I recommend this game? Yes I would actually. I think this would be a good game to introduce somebody who has never played Mega Man games on the Super Nintendo too. It will give them a great idea on how the controls work.. I would even argue this would be a good game to introduce somebody to the Mega Man franchise to. This is a good starting game for new players. Also if you enjoyed Mega Man 7 so much like I did. This can still be a fun game to enjoy as well. Overall, I think this is a good game and one people should try.

Blessings in Christ & happy Gaming
