Mega Man 64 also known as Legends   tornadocam
I consider myself a Mega Man player. I have played the classical Mega Man, Mega Man X, Hacks, and the Legends series. Mega Man 64 also known as Legends were released on the N64 and Play Station 1. The first version I got was the Play Station version. I did not get the 64 version until later that is because I got the N64 years later. I will be for the most part comparing this version to the Play Station Version.
Plot- The world is surrounded by more water than before. The world is desperate for resources. Diggers go into the ruins built by ancient humans, yeah this takes place centuries after this game came out, these ruins are filled with reaverbots who attack anyone that goes inside them. The main job of the diggers is to retrieve refractors which can be used to make electricity, power machines, among other things. Mega Man Trigger is of mysterious origin. He is taken in by a digger family and becomes an archaeologist as well as a top digger. He lives on an airship but the family he lives with crashes on Kattelox Island. Mega Man Trigger must get parts for his ship, defend the city from pirates and hopefully discover things from his past on who he actually is. He must also discover the secrets to Kattelox Island.
Okay, The plot is not changed from the play station version since both versions came within a few months of each other just on different video game systems. It should be no surprise that the plot is the same. When I first got the playstation version I thought this is a different game its something new. There is no mention of Dr. Wily or Sigma in this plot. A few years later when I got the N64 version I felt the same way. Thus, I will give the story a solid 9 out of 10.
Graphics and Controls- The main difference between this version and the Playstation version is the graphics. The Playstation version had awesome graphics. The PS graphics were colorful and the controls were amazing. When I got this version I was curious to see how the graphics would compare. Well lets just say this is were the 64 version suffers.
There are times during the games the graphics get fuzzy on the N64 version. This is true in some of the ruins. It can be hard to see sometimes. At first I thought maybe this was my game cartridge so I cleaned it. The fuzziness did not go away. Sometimes on this version the colors could get a little fuzzy if you are visually impaired like me that can create some problems. However, when there are not any fuzziness in the graphics, the graphics are rich and colorful. Therefore, it makes me wonder if Capcom trying to get a new Mega Man series was rushing this version to expand it to the Nintendo only audiences.
The controls are alright although I did have problems when it came to the using the camera angle. It just seemed like a few times the camera did not want to turn the right way. This can cause you to get hit. The PS version did not have this problem at all. The fuzziness and the camera angle issues cause the rating to suffer a little bit. I give the graphics a 7 out of 10. The reason I do not give them lower is when the graphics do work they are nicely done.
Sound- Both this version and the PS version have the same soundtrack and sounds. The tunes especially in different parts of the city are amazing. Some of the underground themes are nicely done and fit the ruins stages very well. The sounds the enemies make is nicely done it lets you know their attacks are dangerous. Mega Man's buster sounds are also nicely done and lets you know your weapons/attacks are doing damage. The voice acting is also nicely done in both versions. Since both versions use the same sound. I think its fair I give this version a solid 9 out of 10.
Replay Value- Mega Man Legends on the PS is a fun game that you want to play through again and again. This version is a fun game and I have played it a few times. However, I keep going back to the PS version the most. The main reason is the graphic and controls issue. That makes me play this version less esp since it can mess with my vision at times. If that does not bother you than yes this is a game you will want to play through again. In fact, I would highly recommend you play both versions. In my opinion. I give the replay value a 7 out of 10.
Depth- Like most Mega Man games this is were the game really shines. It has a lot of depth. In fact both the N64 and PS version of this game have the same amount of depth. You will need to explore all ruins to get all the items, power ups and weapons. In fact, be prepared to do a lot of backtracking to get everything. Also a lot of the stages take a long time to complete. There is also a lot of side games you can play in this game. Keep in mind you will also need to go back to the ruins to collect money to power up your weapons. I have played both versions of this game and both took me over 50 hours to complete. It is a game that you will have to play a little every day to get everything. Due to the amount of time it takes to complete this game. I give the depth a solid 10 out of 10.
Difficulty- I had a hard time with the difficulty rating for this version. The PS version was difficult for the right reasons it required skill, problem solving, solving puzzles, and the enemies were the right difficulty as well as the boss battles. The battles not only test your skill by reflexes as well. I think I gave the PS Version a 9 out of 10 or something like that, its been a long time since I did the PS review of this game.
This game has a lot of that as well. The enemies can gang up on you, certain battles test your skills, and there are lots of puzzles to solve. Some of the boss fights are very though. However, it also seems like the game is difficult for the wrong reasons. The issues with the graphics can cause you to get hit if your not careful. Also the camera issue can cause enemies to be able to sneak up on you or hit you from the side before you can get the camera angle to work. It is also so easy to not see an enemy around the corner and you end up getting suckered punch. If you are low on health you will die. Unlike other Mega Man games once you loose all your health energy that is it its game over.
I really struggled with this but at the end of the day I give the game a 8 out of 10. The PS version earned its difficult rating. This one kind of earned it for the right reasons, but also for the wrong reasons as well.
Overall- Both Versions came out in late 1997 early 1998. Just a few months from each other. Kenji Infunit who co-created Mega Man and Mega Man X stated that he wanted Legends to be a new Mega Man series. Its obvious to see that Capcom was really trying something new here without Wily or Sigma being in the game. The PS version was doing okay but the classical Mega Man and X games were outperforming this one. In my opinion I think Capcom released this on the N64 to try to sell the game and also to try to get the only Nintendo crowd to play it. That is why I think the N64 version may have been rushed some.
Again, this is just my opinion, but the PS version is the superior version of the two versions of this game. The PS version just has better graphics and flawless controls. This version would be very good it was not the graphics and control issues. Now, maybe if you do not have vision problems these issues will not bother you. If they do not bother you than this is indeed a great game. The plot, sound, and depth are the same in both versions.
I give the N64 version a good 8.2 out of 10. I wanted to give it higher just like I did the PS version. The graphics and controls issues brings the rating down for me. Despite the flaws I have with this game it is a decent game. Its something different and new. If you do not have vision problems you should not let the flaws with this game deter you from playing it. On the other hand, would I recommend this game? Yes I would but I highly suggest you play the PS version first before playing this one.
In summary, this version is not terrible. I just had a hard time playing it in some spots due to reasons I mentioned. Outside of those flaws this is a good game and a nice version. I really think had Capcom not rushed this game it would have been so much like the PS version. Anyway, this concludes my Mega Man 64 review.

Mega Man Legends Review   Marcmoney
Overall - 9.5
Mega Man Legends also known as Mega Man 64 (as what it is called on the Nintendo 64) is one of the greatest Mega Man games I have ever played.  There is finally a Mega Man game that is 3D instead of 2D, which I personally think that all the Mega Man games that are made in 2D seem to be very hard and very complicated.  In this game, it is more like an adventure and it is a lot easier to avoid enemies.  I really like playing this game a lot because of its story and that you can move around instead of moving left and right.  I remember playing this game a long time ago when I was little and I would get to the part where the ship crashes and I would not know what to do.  After playing it now, I am pretty much half finished with the game and I love it.  I guarantee you that this game is a whole lot of fun than any other Mega Man game.
Graphics - 9
The graphics really got a lot of tension because it was a lot cooler and made it look more fun.  I like the effects in the game with the shooting and the items.  It really suits the game.  You can even change your blaster color (I do not know how) by applying any stats upgrade like attack, energy, etc.  You will not know what color it would be, but I had a red and green before.  Other than this, the graphics for everything else is amazing.
Sound - 7
There were some sound issues in the game (the emulator is not the responsibility for it).  The background music was very good, but when it comes to a scene where there is a conversation going on, the people's voices seem to be a little low toned and there is a little hard to understand.  Other than that, the sound effects really kick it off.  The sound effects sound like it would be back from the old games.  I really enjoyed it.
Addictiveness - 8
This game can be addicting some of the time.  Since I loved playing it, I would play it about 3 to 4 hours, which can happen on some of the day per week.  The game is a lot of fun.
Story - 9
The story is pretty cool from the start.  Mega Man is in a building and either tries to get something in there or tries to escape.  Anyways, once Mega Man finally gets out of there and goes into Roll's ship, they seem to be having some issues with the engine.  It starts to stop and they suddenly crashes into an island.  It is up to Mega Man to help with the island and fix up the ship.  This is not really a good explanation, but it is the just of it.  During game play, it is more interesting.
Depth - 10
This game has a lot to offer.  For instance, you can find interesting items that you can give to Roll to make interesting weapons.  Another thing is that you can get items to upgrade your primary weapon into making it stronger.  Also, the game play of the entire game is very interesting.  There are so many things to explain in the game that makes it fun, but this is all the basic things.
Difficulty - 5
The game is a 50/50 on the difficulty.  I think that in some parts of the game, it is easy and some of it can be very difficult.  On a count of how far in the game I am, it is straight on easy like it would be in the Normal difficulty, even though you can choose the difficulty in the game.  The enemies are simple, but some of them can be hard.  The bosses are what you need to focus on because they can damage you very badly.  I would recommend getting items that will help you in the game.
Wrap Things Up...
Mega Man Legends is a very good game to play.  I highly recommend trying this game out if you have not already.  It is very fun and a lot of Mega Man fans would enjoy playing this. :)

I couldn't resist...   Dewybmt
I just...couldn't stay away. Now I feel ashamed because...I love this game more than any other game. Yes, this is my favorite game ever. And I only want to sing it's praises JUST this one time. The game of my childhood AND one I STILL play to this day. Where to begin...
Megaman legends is a game that has sort of a story in it's very existence. First of all, yes I know this particular version I'm reviewing is megaman 64 but it's really a port of megaman legends. There's nothing different. But this game is sort of stuck in a stalemate between being well known and forgotten. It was the first megaman game to be brought into the 3d universe and how sad it was that this was too far fetched for most people. The fan base that grew with this game was small compared to the rest of megaman but it was strong and dedicated. Anybody who's played this game most likely shares my sentiments. But I think I can take it a bit further. Here's the deal with this game.
Story: The entire setting of megaman legends from the get go is rather amazing. While the game has it's own story to play through, there are many instances where a bigger world is pictured and referenced. Possibly the strongest point to this game is this one aspect. The sheer amount of life that can be FELT within everything and everyone. There's nearly limitless room for speculation and many little comfy details allow for a level of immersion that's intensely rare these days. You really feel the world that the N64 is supposed to create. That video games create.
Your heart-warmed eyes are first greeted to the scene of the main character whom you play as. Megaman Volnutt. A young digger found and raised by Barrel Caskett, grandfather of Roll Casket, your mechanic and the one who named you after her favorite fictional hero. Now, excuse me and my interruptions once more but this right here is one of those details. The very fact that a character fictional to us to also fictional to them nails another board on the bridge between the game world and the real world and brings us a step closer to the characters we play. Anyways. Your journey starts in a dark, mechanical tower as Megaman narrowly escapes an over-the-top and rather comical death trap set to protect a large refractor they've been searching for;
A crystal of varying size and color containing large amounts of energy that are used to power machines, seeing as you live on a flying ship you can see why they're important. The very first minutes of the game are utilized escaping this dungeon by battling through the reaverbots, mysterious and dangerous mechaniloids taking residence in ruins to protect the relics hidden within. These machines, by just existing, create a great level of depth and intrigue in the in-game history and potential. They come in any number of sizes and shapes as though they adapt to their surroundings. Curious for machines.
After (thinking you) defeated the boss reaverbot of the tower, you fall off the entire thing and are saved at the last minute by Roll who brought your ship, the flutter, around just in time. With a mocking wave, you're off. The victory is short however as the engine of your ship goes haywire, your power source malfunctioning, and you find yourself crash landing on a nearby island called Kattleox. With no other choice remaining, you take residency on this island and search it's many ruins for refractors and relics to repair your ship and further your adventure, as well as your own goals, as well as take an interest in a great mystery beneath the island. With pirates tailing you around and increased activity of reaverbots building up the suspense of the once peaceful island, Megaman is getting into more than he bargained for. But what's really beneath the island?
Did I make it sound fun? I hope I did. Some people would say the game doesn't play half as awesomely as I described it but I had to have gotten this inspiration somewhere! Now that you're caught up on the events, how would you like to know how the game plays?
Gameplay: Megaman legends has one thing about it that bugs people. How the game plays. I say they're crazy. Megaman legends is complex in this category though. For the most part it's all in how much faith you can have in it and how much you're willing not to give up on it. I personally love the controls because they give you a beautiful thing. Complete and utter control.
You are the one who decides everything from where exactly the camera is pointing to where Megaman is firing to HOW he moves. You're given three ways to move. You can turn in place which makes you a stationary target and centers the battlefield around you. This allows you to survey the area around you and be precise while tasking you with managing multiple targets at once. It's not as bad as it sounds really. The most unlikely scenario however. While you're stationary, you are able to lock on to enemies which makes you more accurate. You can only lock onto one enemy at a time.
You can move freely in any direction while the camera stays focused in one. Whenever you stop moving, megaman will re-adjust himself to look in the same direction as the camera. You can turn the camera while doing this and re-center it around Mega but it's unnecessary as it's actually more helpful to have the camera in one place. This allows you to keep a frame on your target(s) while navigating, albeit blindly, the area around them. When you are doing this, you are able to attack so long as you are running within a 180 degree radius. Which is fancy talk for if you're running left and right around or straight forward at your target. You won't be able to shoot if your back is facing them. This is also helpful if there AREN'T enemies as far as you can see but you want to be cautious.
The third way to move is strafing. Hitting L or R will automatically make Mega run left or right which is very important for all scenarios. While strafing, you can always fire and your shots will fly towards the center of the camera at the moment. You can turn while strafing which lets you move in a circle motion around your enemies which allows you to keep a steady aim on them while on the move. Simple, yet effective.
There are also a few special movements you can do. Little things that add a lot of extra control. You can perform a dodge roll which lets you quickly evade to the left or the right. During this dodge roll, you have a quick frame of invincibility which can be used to save you from countless attacks. A very important feature to learn.
The second is Sidling. You can make megaman do a very small slide left or right which can be very important for long range precision instead of trying to run back and forth obnoxiously. The third action is the ability to turn 180 degrees quickly. You can completely reverse the camera and the direction megaman is facing to have control of the full 360 degrees around you. Like I said, this game is all about control.
I know that took a long time and a lot of space but that's really the biggest thing about Megaman legends' gameplay that I wanted to go into. Just about any complaint people can have with the game will most likely revolve around the concept of MOVING...well, maybe that's not entirely true. There is one more 'problem'...
Difficulty: I know it's sudden to bring this up but this will be quick. Megaman legends is sadly a very easy game. Even on hard mode, while it is still a challenge and all it can be easily nullified by the insane amount of control you have compared to the enemies. But somehow, and this might just be me, but I think that in itself is an UPSIDE. The game really shows you the effects of your skill and precision with the controls. As long as you ignore how you can circle strafe just about anything...moving on!
Graphics: Okay, so it's a 64 bit game and there's not a lot to say in that regard but I'd like to credit this game on a few things they did. First of all, the game has pretty and colorful textures on just about everything. It gives personality to all the people and enemies and it can be a bit cute as well. If you can get past the fact that it's somewhat anime-styled.
The second thing I want to say about the graphics, and this isn't even really a graphics thing but a modeling thing, is how beautifully they did with the interactivity of the people and environments. You are most definitely not the only thing up and at 'em. This is another of those life-giving details. Megaman legends was possibly even ahead of it's time! There are any number of things moving around and doing things other than you and with how open and alive the game already feels, this can even make the game feel epic with almost breathing enemies all around you or a single enemy facing you down or a giant machine nearly off in the distance for you to topple! It's really hard to explain, but with an open mind you can easily see what I'm talking about in the game itself. Give it a try!
Sound: Now this is both a slightly controversial detail, and a very important detail. It's controversial because there is one difference between the N64 version of this game and the PS1 version. The voice quality on the PS1 version was a good bit better than on the N64 version and the music was a bit faster. However, I think these are both negligible details. Just though it was worth mentioning.
Really what I want to say about the sound is that it's like no other game before or after. The music is phenomenal and all the tracks are practically orchestrated. The music has a style you can only recognize in megaman legends but these styles are often inspired by great classical tracks. The final boss theme is Little Fugue in G Minor. That's class right there. The music is in a genre of it's own really and beautiful tracks they are. The soundtrack is almost worth a platinum release. For me anyways.
The sound effects are LITERALLY nothing I've heard in almost any media. Unique, satisfying, exhilarating and fitting to say the least! It's as simple as that.
The voices COULD have used a little work in some areas but at the same time in others they can be perfect! I suppose it's all in the actors you hire but I always love listening to this game.
Depth: Have you ever thought Zelda was the leading side-quest simulator? Maybe. But let's introduce contender number one. Legends one that is! Yes, Megaman legends has side-quests. Optional, lengthy, though actually surprisingly few. They're all very entertaining though and are more than just Get X for Y and the like. Bringing gosh darned hope to a young girl in the hospital for Christ's sake! Pardon my language...
But other than the side-quests, let it be known that Megaman legends once more wants you to be the leader here. Where you'll find most of your new special items and secrets will be various hidden rooms around dungeons but also in the big ruin. The big ruin is just what it sounds like, a free-roaming ruin you can enter that's connected to many places all over the island. There are many reaverbots and even more treasures waiting down there if you're willing to risk it. And there's even a sense of progression as points you may not access early on are unlocked as you obtain a certain weapon. I mean a single certain weapon really but nevertheless!
Addictiveness: There are at least 10, 20 save file locations or so for megaman legends. I've already looped around them all from how many times I've taken it upon myself to play this game. Call me crazy, but there's an addictiveness to this game that comes entirely on how truly fun it is just to play it. Me? Well the difficulty and length of the game add up just nicely enough for me to still have it in my N64. I hope it's the same for you guys.
Overall: As you can see, I am a huge fan of this game and it's sequel. I nearly cried when the third game was cancelled! But I will continue to remain faithful and with all the things I've said here, I hope you see why, I hope you might feel the same, or at least understand. This is a great game with nearly everything balanced out perfectly. It's the kind of game you have to go into with more than the intent to beat it. You have to want to 'play' it. Don't look towards the goal. Watch the road before you. They say the point of the adventure is not the destination, but the journey itself. Let's hope when they make another Legends game that they, that everyone remembers this.

Megaman Legends... I mean 64   legacyme3
Megaman 64. What a classic.
I remember when I first played it as a child. I actually played the original on the playstation.
It was called the Legends series.
Some fans will look at this game and think it's a great game by Nintendo, and others will shake their head, saying the playstation version was better...
I myself stand on neither side. This game is a fantastic port of the original, and the only thing the PSX holds over it, is that Legends 2 was also on the same system. As few can say, I have beaten both Legends 1 and 2, and I would have attempted on 3 (even if it meant buying a 3DS). However, as Legends 3 was canceled, I no longer have intentions of purchasing a 3DS.
Anyway, enough of my ramblings. It's time to review a game.
Graphics - 8
Megaman 64 will forever be known as the series first foray into the 3rd dimension. This expedition however, is not a failure. You grow to enjoy the blocky textures and the odd shading at times. It may not look perfect, but such is the charm of the game. Megaman 64 was one of my own first games in 3D, and I played it far more often than any game at the time. The best graphics I feel are found near the end of game when you get to the final boss. The ending scene is also fairly decent. Not the best, but a great start.
Sound - 9
Kattleox Island has such amazing sounds. I personally love almost all the sound heard in the city (your main hub for the game). The sound isn't perfect though, and is often delayed. Sometimes you will get hit by a car, fly in the air, and hear the impact a little after the fact. Luckily, it doesn't take away from the fact the Cartridge is very limited in what it can do. In fact, I'm surprised they fit as much of the sound track on as they did. This is a case of getting a good score out of a little place on the cart.
Addictiveness - 9
It's been many years since I first played it, and I go back to it every so often. I will never tire of the citizens of Kattleox, nor the peril they all face. I play this game again and again, and every time I feel like I enjoy myself a little more.
Story - 10
You are a digger. You crash land on an island in the middle of nowhere. You need to find a way off the island. This means going underground and finding the pieces you need. It's not that simple though. Along the way you will face many a peril, including the wacky and comical Bonnes, the robots they concoct, and a crisis that could destroy the island... forever. It's the best you could have hoped for back then... and they delivered.
Depth - 8
There's a good amount to do if you choose to go 100% on it. You don't need everything to beat the game, but if you do, you will find a lot of really cool stuff. I won't spoil it, but there are several gadgets and things you can get on your second time through :)
Difficulty - 5
It's a lot easier with a game pad, but if you don't have one, some of the stuff you have to do can be absolute torture. I'm saying 5 based on the N64 version I have here at my house. The game has it's moments, but at the end of the day, the game is still very very easy.
Overall - 8.9
This game has aged well. It's still a classic everyone should play. I hope every day that Legends and Legends 2 get released on the PlayStation Store, but as of yet my prayers are unanswered.
There's so much I wanted to say about it, but most of it you really need to find out for yourself. If you have yet to play it, play it. It's worth your time.

Does anyone know a good setup for an Xbox 360 controller? The default one is rather confusing
Calder17 05-07-18 - 12:49 AM
Double- Clicking isnt working and youre stuck using the lousiest most uncomfortable default controls. Game crashes like a Beetch too. Enjoy :)

Not bad, some minor differences between PS1 and N64 versions, but not bad.

i cant use the control pad, and its not just for this game either
Shard_Flame132 07-11-14 - 10:07 PM
You can't double-click to change the controls, Just suck it up and deal with your defaults...You can find a good way to make it work without too much finger pain. :D

Someone, somewhere should make a hack that has a character select, won't crash, and plays faster.

this looks horrible, megaman is a 2d platformer not a 3D RPG looking shooter

left cnrl is shoot. I got this 1 to work by using 1 of the alternative emulators in the top right og the load box. Try them if the main 2 don't work,

For some reason every time I play this it goes like 5 times faster than I think it should be going.
