Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack Take VI
Time for another review and in this review I will be reviewing MM 4 Ridley Hack VI. I will be comparing it to the other hacks of Mega Man 4 and comparing it to the original game. Mega Man 4( Original Version) was a very popular video game that came out in 1991. It is regarded as an all time classic. In fact, the game is often ranked in 100 top NES games of all time.

Story: 9

Like most of the other hacks so far of MM 4. The story has not been changed at all. Mega Man seems to be enjoying peace after the 3rd defeat of Dr. Wily. In fact Dr. Wily has faded from the world's mind. Suddenly new robots are unleashed upon the world. Dr. Cossack appears and claims he is tired of the world not recognizing him as a top scientists. He has created 8 new robot masters and challenges Mega Man. Mega Man sets out to get to the bottom of this. Who is Dr. Cossack and is he really the bad guy here? Is an old foe pulling the strings? Okay, as I stated in my other reviews I liked MM 4's story line. It showed creativity, had mystery to it and offered suspense. So as such my rating will not change. I give it a 9 out of 10.

Graphics & Controls 8

The Graphics are pretty good for a hack. I like the colors they seem to go with the stages very well. Now the backgrounds have been changed in the stages. But even with the changes they go together with the colors. The sprites are very good too. One thing I was glad to see was they fixed the lags that occurred in Ridley Hack V. So that is a plus right there.

The controls are a lot more smooth compared to Ridley Hack V. However, there is one spot in this game that the controls slow down and in that particular stage one might find themselves fighting against the controls. The good news is that was the only spot in the game (rain stage) I noticed it. Ridley Hacks I, II, and V had some issues with the controls. Thus, I give the graphics and controls an 8 out of 10.

Sound: 5

First of Why oh Why did the makers of this game change the soundtrack. Mega Man 4 had a very awesome sound track that made on want to pause the game just to listen. Ridley Hacks I-V did not mess with the sound. But whoever made this version changed the sound. The Robot Masters stages have been switched, again what was the purpose of that and why was that needed. In addition, to changing the robot masters soundtracks. The tunes have been sped up. The tunes being sped up creates tingles in some of the themes. Mega Man's Buster and enemy shots have their same sound. Some might not find a problem with the tunes being sped up and switched. But to me it causes the game to suffer. Thus, I give the sound a 5 out of 10. Mega Man's buster and enemies shots being left unchanged keep me from giving it a lower score.

Replay Value: 6

The Replay Value was hard to rate for this game. The controls being fixed is a plus. But of all the Ridley Hacks of Mega Man 4. I will probably play this one the least. The sound being changed took a lot of fun out of this game for me. Mega Man games are known for their music and to me a good game has good sound. Moreover, the depth and secret items have been removed in this game. Mega Man games are also known for their depth and it was disappointing to see the secret items removed. Despite the games flaws I did have fun playing  the game. Its a Mega Man game and Mega Man games are very fun to play. However, I will probably play this one the least. Its not the worst hack out there and its not the worst Mega Man game. The flaws just put a damper on it. So I give it a 6 out of 10.

Depth: 6

The Depth in this game is so-so. The stages are long so that adds a lot of depth. It will take a while to master the stages and the game too. The stages have been drug out to make them longer. There are robot masters weapons to gain so that always adds some depth. But the secret items and power ups were removed in this game. The secret items and extra power ups made Mega Man 4 a very fun game. Most of the hacks that I have played have also kept the secret items. So it was disappointing to see those removed. Why were they removed? Did the makers of this game think the stages were long enough that they no longer needed the secret items. Of the hacks I have played I would say this one's depth is hard to rate. Removing the secret items really hurts the rating. On the other hand, I think it deserves higher then a 5 because of the longevity of the stages. Therefore, I give the depth a 6 out of 10.

Difficulty: 10

What can I say this game was brutal I mean very brutal. This game was back to Ridley Hack I and II difficulty. Enemies take a lot of shots to kill so sometimes its best to just avoid them when possible. Also when enemies hit you it does a quarter damage to your health bar. So about 4 hits you are gone. Enemies just love to bury you in this game as they often hit you from behind, will fog you, and will often come in bunches. You can easily find yourself cornered or swarmed in this game. Also enemies will sometimes wait in ambushes. It is so easy to dodge the other enemies being going good and then have an enemy pop up from a wall or out of nowhere. To make matters worse is the there are pits galore in this game. I would say of the Ridley Hacks of MM 4 this one and I probably has the most pits in them. So expect to fall into a pit at some point in this game. Spikes are more common in this game so you will get poked to death in this game. The Robot masters weapons pack a punch when fighting them. Also the Robot Masters have been sped up. Even the slower ones are fast in this game.

So yeah I died a lot in this game. I got a lot of game overs in this game. But the difficulty is the right kind of difficulty. This game will challenge your skills, creativity, problem solving, dodging ability, and it requires a lot of luck as well as patience . I like games that are challenging like that. However, some players may find this game too difficult. So if you get frustrated easy then this game might not be for you.

Overall Rating 7.8

I really had a hard time rating this game. The game did have some good points to it. But at the same time the game had some serious flaws. Its certainly not the worst game out there. Nor is it the worst hack I have played. But its not in the league of MM4 (original version), MM 4 Simple version, or even Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack IV. The original and other hacks were very very good. When I think of giving a Mega Man game a lower rating. I think of the worst Mega Man game I have played, which they are not that many, like Mega Man II for Game Boy. When I think of giving a Mega Man game a high rating. I think of the best Mega Man games I have played like Mega Man 7, Mega Man IV, MM V, MM 5, MM3, and MM4. This one feels right in the middle.

Before I start with the negatives I will start with the positives. The controls being fixed was a huge plus in this game. It fixed the problems that MM 4 RH V had. So that was nice to see. I also liked the colors in this game. That was nicely done and showed some creativity. I also liked the difficulty. This time the game was difficult for the right reasons. I like games that really challenge you. So to see this game be very challenging was a bonus as well. Moreover, the story line being the same was also a bonus because the story line did not need to be changed.

Now for the negatives. As I stated under the sound section. Why did whoever, make these change the sound in this game. Mega Man 4 had a perfect sound to it and the other hacks did not mess with that. So what was the purpose here. I found myself wanting to sometimes just mute the sound in some spots. Second, why did they remove the secret items and power ups? I understand the stages were long. But still it seemed like removing the secret items took a lot of the depth out. Mega Man games are known for their depth. So again what was the purpose. The other Ridley Hacks had the secret items in them. Maybe the makers of this game thought the stages were long enough and items were not needed. But MM 4 RH IV had long stages and the secret items were still there. Also while the controls were very good. There was that one spot were the controls slowed down. In fact, I thought my game was fixing to lock up on me. That is the only spot it occurs so that is good. Still, though having the game almost lock up is no fun.

So while the game had some good points and its certainly not the worst Mega Man game I have played. This game had a lot of flaws compared to the other Ridley hacks of MM 4. I hated that this game had flaws. Because it started off like it would be an excellent game. I was excited to play this game at first. But then when I saw the flaws it kind of took the joy out of it. Don't get me wrong I had some fun playing it. I just think with this games flaws I will probably go back to it the least.  So the question is would I recommend this game? I will let you be the judge of that. If the sound being changed and the secret items being removed does not bother you. Then by all means play this game and enjoy it. So if your that type of person then yes I would recommend this game. If your like me and more of an old school gamer then probably not. In addition, this game is mainly for novice or veteran players. This game is brutal in terms of difficulty. This is a game you would not want to introduce somebody to Mega Man too let alone Mega Man 4. If you get frustrated easy or want to introduce somebody. I recommend playing Mega Man 4 simple, the original Mega Man 4, or Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack IV. Those games are very doable and will not cause you to get frustrated. Plus they would be great games to introduce somebody too.

In summary, I give this game a 7.8. I don't think it deserves high as I stated when I give a Mega Man game a high rating I think its in the same league as the ones I mentioned. When I give one a low rating I think of the worst Mega Man game I have played. This one felt like being in the middle. Its not the worst but not the greatest as I have stated several times. So I think 7.8 is about right for this game
