Maze Invaders (prototype) Review by: Singelli - 9.5/10

If Walls Could Talk...
OVERALL RATING: 9.5/ 10

If walls could talk, I am sure they would be talking about this game.  ;)  Now, before anyone goes crying foul for my overall rating, take the time to read my review, as I explain each category and how I think everything comes together to be much higher than the actual average.  In truth, I usually bring my overall score down if it is too high mathematically, but I enjoyed this game so much that I just could not justify downgrading its awesomeness.

You would think that a game which seems to take its roots from Pac- man could not beat the original in like- ability.  While classics have their charm, I chose to review this game because in my opinion, Maze Invaders is much, much more fun that Pac- man.  There are tons of creative mazes to work your way through, the graphics are extremely colorful and cute, the variety in enemies and maps and walls is impressive, and the game itself is downright addicting.  If you want to spend a few hours playing an awesome arcade game, this is certainly one to try.  Gather delicious fruit, shoot persistent enemies, avoid blood- thirsty bullets, work your way through shifting mazes, and get to a green door all before the timer runs out!  Everything Pac- man was missing, this game has.

GRAPHICS: 9/ 10
It probably seems like there is not much to say about a game's graphics when the game consists of mazes and Pac- man like creatures. However, I found this game's graphics to be pretty stunning, all things considered.  Most of the maps were on black- ish backgrounds, but unlike many arcade mazes, each map had its own set of very distinct colors.  The color set is very bright and bold, amazingly without being obnoxious.  Even though some colors pop up repetitively to help the player recognize wall types, there is enough creativity in the development of the game that the repetition is hardly worth a second glance.  Each maze feels fresh even after you have died and re- started a few times.  I would bargain that the only map which gets old is the first because it has no special features and any player who has did once knows what is in store for them.

Aside from the actual colors, the character sprites are fairly well designed.  The pixelated feel that you find in most older arcade games is certainly minimized in this one, putting the game head and shoulders above many of its competitors.  The protagonist in and of itself is pretty cute: a bright blue circle with droopy eyes and a little red protruding nose.  Unfortunately, the red eyelids are usually set in such a way to make him look sleepy or sad, which is a bit of a bummer.

The enemy sprites are what impressed me the most, to be honest.  Just to name a few of them: there are enemies which looked like ninja stars and consistently and smoothly spin, block- like objects which shoot bouncing bullets, and 3- D rectangles which spin around each other.  The latter was the most stunning in my opinion because it is hard for me to imagine such a small sprite being able to so accurately depict such an animation.  All in all, this game is full of eye candy, and I absolutely loved the visuals!

SOUND: 7/ 10
Like the visuals, I did actually love the sound effects as well.  The reason I did not give them a vote of 9, however, is simply because most sounds were exactly what you would expect, and lacked creativity.  That being said, the game noises never annoyed me or subtracted from the game experience.  One of the most unique aspects of the game is that the game music ONLY plays while your character moves.  The cute, uppity tune stops on a dime whenever you do, and for some odd reason, I LOVED this aspect of the game.  It took me awhile to notice it because I just wanted to keep moving and I had to step back and realize that strategy required sitting still for a few moments on occasion.
Most other noises were pretty predictable.  There is a small 'glomping' thud noise when you capture some fruit, a 'psssh' sound to alert you of a new enemy spawning, a ringing bell when you are almost out of time, typical shooting noises, a quirky spiraling death song, and finally, a noise that occurs once you beat a maze and your points are totaled.  The only noise I thought was a little unique was the last one I mentioned.  For some reason, the noise did not fit the general expectation, and I am not sure why.  I think it is because the noise sounded like it was moving 'up' in pitch and tone, when the clock is actually winding -down-.  It sounded more like a 'level up' beat, but I guess that is not too inappropriate considering you are moving forward into the next level.

ADDICTIVENESS: 9/ 10
I loved this game so much that I almost rated it a 10.  However, I am sure that at SOME point the game would get dull. I played it for a few hours without this happening though, trying different routes so that I could encounter different mazes.  I just love how the mazes are all connected and so you essentially can choose mazes you like to complete once you start getting accustomed to which doors lead to which mazes.  There were also SOOOO many of them that I found myself encountering a new maze almost every single time I played.  Thus, there was always something for me to discover, and I can say beyond the shadow of a doubt that I will be returning to play this before the Christmas break is over. Nearly everything about it is appealing in my opinion, and I would be shocked if there were many gamers that disagreed.

Story:  N/ A
There was none, so there is nothing to say about it.  Not even doing any research yielded in any results, so if there IS one out there, I apologize.  Hungry blue guy competes for a full stomach?

DEPTH: 7/ 10
Again, this category is always the hardest for me to rate.  I realize what the category description says, but when I think about something's depth, I usually think about its defining features and abilities.  For example, people can have depth or they can be shallow.  The same can be true for games I believe, and so this is how I always feel inclined to consider this rating.  I sort of went for a compromise of the two this time.  The game has PLENTY of maps to explore, but there is not much depth to it (my perspective).  Every map has essentially the same goal, but certain maps have certain challenges an some challenges are harder than others.  Since you can choose which order you complete the mazes in, it is hard to feel as though the game gets progressively harder.  Sometimes you hit a really easy map after many difficult ones and you feel relieved to catch a break.

There are many ways to get points including eating fruit, beating the level with a quick time stamp, and shooting enemies.  The problem with the last option is that it is so unnecessary that I often forget it is even an option, so this detail lacks depth as well.  It would have been nice if the game developers had put the shooting ability to more use.  Also, if I understand the intro shot to each maze, there is a watermelon in each maze that provides a ton of points, but I could not figure out how to manifest this watermelon.

However, on the plus side of my perspective, the game has an amazing resume of variety.  There are around ten opponents, at least 30 maps, and around 5 various wall types.  The sheer number of combination this allows for is impressive.  Plus, unlike many arcade games, the fruit are randomly generated so that they are never in the same positions twice.  Thus, some levels can be really easy one time you play, and then much harder the next time.

DIFFICULTY: 7/ 10
I do not know that I would ever call any game like this 'difficult'.  As far as actual controls go, they are not frustrating once you get past the first 30 seconds of the first map. For some reason, every time I started this game, the little blue guy wanted to veer off towards a bottom corner instead of going where I actually intend for him to go.  Otherwise, the game is all clear steering!

I personally am a huge fan of all the variety within the game, as I have mentioned before.  This variety adds difficulty to the game simply because it allows the player to strategize in more ways.  For example, there are at least two types of red turnstile walls.  You can push these to rotate and change the maze, and/or these walls might rotate randomly every few seconds.  These can be used to more quickly get to fruit (there are ten pieces in each maze) and progress through the maze, or as quick shields to enemies which can not shoot through walls.  There are wide blue walls which you can pass through, but enemies can not.  I enjoyed this type of wall the most, as it allows for quick and safe escape in many cases.  However, I did learn the hard way that staying ON the wall does not mean you are safe from harm.  Haha!  There are also 'roving' walls which move like snakes.  These were sometimes hard to predict though they follow a set path, and these created openings and then closed those openings just as fast.

Not only did a variety of wall type add to the game, but so did the number of enemies.  Each enemy has its own property and when there are many types in the same maze, you have to remember what they can and can not do in order to react appropriate.  The most basic kind of enemy for example, looks like a ninja star and spins around the maze. You cannot destroy it by shooting at it, but you can freeze it in place for a few moments.  Some blocks shoot bullets that bounce off walls and around the maze, while other enemies' bullets destroy walls.  Yet other ammunition does not have any special ability at all and simply kills you if it comes into contact with you.  Most of the guys who can shoot you can be destroyed by your own bullets, but not all of them.

Thus, as I said before, being able to play this game effectively really comes down to -knowing- the game. You only get three lives to start with, and it takes a LOT of points to get a new life.  You have to be patient, thoughtful, and careful to make it far, but such qualities are ones I enjoy in a game.  The game certainly takes more time to become accustomed to than its parent game.... that is for sure.

One of the only things I do NOT like about this game, which makes it a bit harder, is that there is no visual for the timer's count down.  The ringing noise goes off when you are running out of time, but this is the only indication that your time is drawing nigh.  You die several seconds later if you have not gathered all the fruit AND escaped through a green door.

In conclusion?  This is definitely a game I would recommend.  It is fun, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, and (aside from the sound effects), it is quite creative.  The randomness and variety are a tremendous plus to this game, giving it high re- play value.  I am not sure how many times I would have to play it before I got bored of it, and I am sure that if I ever DID get bored of it, some time away would have me wanting to come back to it for more fun.  I am in love with it, and it is definitely on my 'keep' list.

Note to self:  I should make a layout that I use only for my reviews...
