Maru's Mission Review by: totaldramaman2 - 2.1/10

Maru's Mission review
Oh crap, THIS game. Maru's Mission for the Game Boy. This game was made by Jaleco, a slightly obscure gaming company that made a ton of random games. A lot of these games have been released for the Virtual Console on Wii and 3DS recently, and this would be one of them. So, if it was released on VC, it must be good, right?

     --- You chose... poorly. ---
Maru's Mission starts out with a really good song, maybe what you might here if Mega Man and some Chinese game were crossed together. Then... it sounds like a bootleg NES game. These sprites are all screwed up. Maru looks okay, the girl looks out of place, and the villan looks like it should be in a pirate game. Wait... he doesn't have a head. Stage 1 begins with a seziure-enducing "INSECTOR" sign. Is that supposed to be Inspector? Seriously, wouldn't care if the letters were slightly misplaced, they could AT LEAST learn how to spell. The graphics on Maru are actually better than I thought. He actually looks at the screen when he stops, nothing I would expect from Jaleco. Graphics have nothing to do with quality, however. You can't walk in through taller grass, and if you hold down A, you can float. Oh yeah, you just freeze your walking sprite when you fly. So, you shoot litte stars everywhere for your weapon. If you heat a tree stump, these little smoke clouds come out of it, which seems to be health. Just from this stump, I went from 200 to 351 health. There's also these things that looks like the boomerang-weilding rats from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. UGH, I keep hitting these these bean things that make the screen flash like mad. SEZUIRE TIME!!!

--- Deceving graphics strike again. ---
That bean made me blast through the level all the way to the boss, which is comparable to the cannons in Kirby Mass Attack, where you go past everything until you get to a certain destination. The boss is called Eyeclop. He says something about saving... Cori. Dancing in a field of odd names is the same as this game, just without the good part. The graphics on this scene are impressive, but wasted by the slow text. Seriously, there's one letter per SECOND, and each letter makes a sound. Eyeclops's floating ability is ruined by the faxt you can do the same. His weird electric attack can be EASILY dodged by this. Oh gosh, SEZUIRE TIME!!! The screen flickers constantly here, which is extremely annoying. Seriously, I'm playing this at 11:10 at night, in a room where the only lights are the screen, my TV, and some coming from the kitchen. This guy gives a RIDICULOUS amount of damage on each hit, explaining the huge amount of life. Seriously, does it really have to flicker THAT much? I swear, I'm devloping elilpsy from playing this! The only time you can hit Eyeclops in when his eye is open, and that's when he does his electric attack. Seriously, I might as well just watch Eletric Soilder Porygon, that Pokemon episode that gave 25,000 kids a sezuire! Oh, and guess what happens when you defeat him? SEZIURE TIME!!!

--- Jaleco, your eyes must have a bad frame rate. ---
Eyeclops gives you some ninja star item when you defeat him. Weird, his eyes blink at every letter. Stage 2 gives you some weird bean that gives you a wave attack that rakes up the whole row of the screen. This Maru clone comes out eventually, and he's nearly impossible to defeat him. Wait... Game Over? BACK TO THE TITLE SCREEN? ...YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME, that Maru clone gave like 20 damage per hit, you don't get life re-fills aftter you comlete the stage, no. You have to do all six stages on ONE HEALTH BAR. There's not even some password, I honestly wouldn't mind if the password was as big as Metroid's, or as slow as Inpendence Day's, at least have an extra life, or some kind of continue code, like holding Left+A to begin in the beggining of the world you're in from Super Mario Bros! Okay, I refuse to risk my sight any more, so I'm done with this game. If you're not bored to death, I'll see you in my next review.
