An awesome party game to play with friends!
I remembered playing Mario party, it was a party with a bunch of minigames that you can play with your friends or by yourself, This series has came a very long way, and we are supposed to get a Mario party for the 3DS very oh so soon, So let's just take some time and review the first game of this amazing series! This is Mario party for the N64.
There really is no story to this game, much like some other games I have reviewed, mostly pirate games, I would make up my own silly plot like I did with some other games, But not this time.
Mario party is well, a party game as the name suggests, there are a ton of different game modes to play in and I will go through all of them one by one, In story mode, you and 3 other computer players compete with eachother through big game boards as you compete to collect the most stars by the end of game, In minigame mode, you can replay any of the minigames that you have unlocked through the story mode, And last but not least, there is minigame island, where once again you and three other computer players are on a map and you must complete each minigame in order to advance through the map. The game has a bunch of crazy game boards, one takes place on a birthday cake, one takes place on a huge island, and so on! The main highlight of the game though, is the multiplayer, In this mode you can play the game with 3 other friends and you can do just quite everything! The minigames, the story mode, yeah, you get the point. There are over 56 minigames in this game, and they are all very fun and enjoyable, They are all categorized by genre, like some minigames are free for all, some have one against three, etc. As for the characters, you can pick from Mario, Luigi, peach, yoshi, donkey Kong, and wario.
This game was released in 1999, and for what it is worth, It looks really really good! All the maps and worlds you will be exploring are big, cartoony, and bursting with color and atmosphere! I mean sure, the N64 was known for having "Blocky" games like smash bros, super Mario 64, etc, But that is the point! Besides, this was a cartridge based system! But anyways, as for the characters, they look really good as well! Mario looks like himself, Luigi looks fine, Peach looks good, Yoshi is cool, and all the other characters look awesome as well! The HUD when playing story mode is pretty self explanatory, All the contestants of the game are shown on the top 4 left corners of the screen, and It also shows you how main coins everyone has and all the stars that they have collected. I really like the level design though, really, Birthday cakes, huge islands, jungles, It is everything you come to expect from Mario!
The sound in this game is your typical Mario fare, but that does not mean it is bad! I mean sure all the songs are pretty catchy and all, And that is a really good thing, because this is what we grew up here! All the songs you will be hearing in each level really suit the mood of each level and just prepares for what you are about to encounter. As for the sound effects, they are OK as well, You get everything that you have heard in various Mario games, and that is pretty good as well! Heck, the game even uses character voices! Which means you will get to hear everyone talk every once in a while, and all the characters have great rememberable voices, which is even a bigger plus then usual! Except, some and I say SOME of the songs can get a little repetitive, but it is really no problem! Because the songs thereselves are extremely catchy.
You guys should already know how likely I am to ever play this game again, VERY likely! The game just has so much content that it blows my whole mind completely! Whenever I have a sleepover with any of my friends, I always made sure I had this game with me, you know so My friends can know how awesome this game truly is! In fact, when I first played the first 20 minutes of this game, I got hooked instantly! Because the game is tons of fun and should last you a really really long time.
You guys already know, this game is loaded with content and replay value! I mean, so much that your brain will completely explode at how much there is! The story mode consists of 6 main game boards to play through, so that mode with probably take you about 2-4 hours to get through, but the main highlight of the game has got to be the multiplayer, this mode lets you play with 3 of your friends as where you guys can do just about everything the single player lets you do! Story mode, free play mode, mini game island, etc. This is one of those game that will last you so long you won't believe it! A true main staple of the series!
Now to be honest here, the game is pretty easy, I mean there is a difficulty setting for certain modes, so you can practically adjust how hard you want everything to be! But some minigames are still pretty easy and don't require much skill to get past, but some of those other ones can give you quite a hard time! And that is OK, because people like me really like a challenge in certain video games, and that is for the best!
If you need a good game on the N64 that you can play with friends besides smash bros, I highly suggest you go with this one! I mean it has fun, charm, depth, and everything else you come to expect from a Mario game like this! I gave this game a 8.2 because how much fun it is and the amount of content it offers for you, So anyways, just buy this game! You will be highly satisfied! You won't be disappointed, just do it! This has been your favorite reviewer RedHotToddy, and I am signing off!

Mario Party Description: You know Mario can jump. You know he can kick Bowser's tail from here to the moon, but we bet you didn't realize that Mario is the biggest party animal on the face of the Earth. Nintendo is throwing the most insane bash to ever hit the N64, and you're invited. For the first time, you'll catch a glimpse of how Mario celebrates all of the victories he's had over the years. Mario Party is unlike any other game for the N64, and it just might be the best party game to ever hit the system. Mario Party is designed for 1 to 4 players, but it's not really a party unless you're playing with your pals. The festivities are based on a board game format, right down to the fact that players must roll a die to determine how many spaces to move. The fun starts when players land on different squares, because each space holds one of more than fifty different mini-games. These quick competitions determine who will earn coins and stars, and who will go home empty handed. The mini-games are spread over eight different game boards, all of which are not immediately available. Some of the games pit every man or princess against the others, some are two-on-two, and others are even three against one. The games are simple, but remarkably fun to play. One challenge is loosely based on "Simon Says," another involves a two-on-two bobsled race, and one crazy game makes one player attempt to cross a rope while the other three do their best to shake the player off. You'll find skill games, racing games, puzzle games --basically any type of challenge you could imagine. A good portion of the actual game boards are animated, with hidden dangers and special challenges scattered everywhere. Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Bowser, Yoshi, and Wario are all invited to the party, and each character has his or her own game board. Mario Party is fun for only one player, but to get the most out of this party-in-a-pak, you should play with three other friends. It's definitely the kind of game that will keep you up till the wee hours of the morning, so you might want to start catching up on your sleep right away.
