Don't be a tuna head! Rescue the cheerleader, save the world!   endings
Maniac Mansion is a point and click gamethat was ported to the NES, simliar to comptuer games of finding the hidden item. The developer was Lucasfilm, and they made some pretty good games.This might sound like a scary Resident Evil type game, but its anything but. The only maniac here is a mad scientist, and he's really just kind of dumb. The titular mansion is the highlight here, and location to all your wanderings inside and just around the grounds.
You play as young red-haired (Archie-esque)high-school heartthrob Dave and two of his six friends, on a mission to rescue a cheerleader. Sandy is Dave's girlfriend, who was kidnapped by weird Doctor Fred in his creepy mansion on the hill. The Dr's crabby wife, Nurse Edna and their son, weird Ed, are also present. There are a lot of "ED" things in this game, it reminded me of "Ed, Edd and Eddy" tv show. Anyways, the Eds have Sandy, or rather, Dr. Fred does. If you don't save her he will use his machine to suck out her brains!  There is a cast of supporting characters, and while its not especially deep, it seems to me its meant to be making fun of cheesy horror movies. You will have to make use of your various team mates and their own special skills they bring to get by theconundrums of the mansion and ultimately beat the game.The puzzles are more logic oriented, and many times out of the box thinking saves the day.  The graphics are not so great, even at the time this was released, the characters were of limited animation, although the sprite size is large and easy to see.
Your first screen is a blue background and some faces of Dave's pals, to select who goes with Dave. It looks fairly underwhelming, fortunately the game has a lot of colors and location once you're in it. You can choose any two pals, the only difference between them what they bring to the table. One writes novels as a hobby, another does photography. Some are musically inclined, some fix things.  The game does a good job of telling you in a sentance what each teen's talents are - except Jeff. I don't think Maniac Mansion tells you directly, but if you play as Surfer Jeff, is a phone repairdude. So now you know.All of these skills can be used in the mansion at some point, and some even link in to how many endings you can move towards. All the kids have their own theme soundtracks that occur while you are playing as them. These themes are often the only music in the game, aside from certain moments, but fortunately these tunes are really, really good and in a wide variety of genres. Micheal's track is all funk, Razor's is punk, Syd is 80's new wave music with lots of keyboard. I particularly love Dave's song, and excellent modern updates of it exist on Youtube. Glorious!
The blue-faced residents in the mansion might be scary to younger players, but the game is more B-movie shenanigans than trying to scare you.  A lot of the situations are played for laughs, and the dialog or text is full of humor. If you find it funny or not will depend on if you like the B-movie type plotting and the sheer randomness of a game with:
  • talking aliens who yearn for fame and rock concerts, and fake fruit
  • pitch black rooms where you have to find a light switch first - nothing jumps out at a you, ever
  • nuclear reactor cooling out in a backyard swimming pool
  • a guy who may or may not be dead, dressed as a mummy
  • the phrase "Don't be a tuna head" is so popular, there is a Tuna Head arcade game in the mansion
Anyone in your party can pick up and trade the dozens of items in this game, and part of this sort of game is weeding out what is an unneccesary, distracting item to the story (red herring). The items are scattered all over the house, some hidden, some you have to get ingeniously. Such things litter the area as cheese and chainsaws, keys, a hamster, a hunk-o-matic machine, paint remover or a pepsi can (yes, the brand), records, Tvs and Tentacle Chow. The sprites for the game can be a bit overcrowded, especially in areas around the kitchen, and it can be a bit tricky to navigate your cursor over them. All kids can use their talents to help beat the game, and there are multiple endings which stem from the kid's special abilities, making the games play differently depending on who is in your party. That being said, there are a few odd combinations. Having both Razor AND Syd, both musicians, is redundant as they will both have the same skills.  Jeff the surfer is rather dull, as he is a weaker form of Bernard - who can fix anything and Bernard has small fits of fear that add comically to the story.
I like the highschoolers have puzzles in the mansion that only they can solve, so if you run into something and are unsure how to use it, it just might be something you can't access with the group you brought. There is a lot of trial and error in a game like this, with the somewhat clunky choices like "USE WATER ON PLANT" or "GIVE WATER TO PLANT" kind of interpretation to commands that can be a slight hinderance, and the small graphic details for some items can be tough to spot out. Maniac Mansion ts definitely not for everyone. Some items are rather conventional, (use paint remover to remove the paint stain!) others are tricky or 'how was I supposed to know?'. This could be aggravating as you won't know what do to next. While its rare, another thing that can make the game unpleasant is your highschoolers can get killed in game, although fairly difficult to do. Nothing is shown, one moment they are there and then theres a grave with their name on it outside the mansion! This still pretty unusual to see, as the cause is very specific and always related to reaction to a player action- as there are only a small handful of ways to do in a party memeber. You can also have an instant game over if you mess around with the nuclear reactor too much, this again, trial and error.
Graphics: 6
There is nothing really pretty here. Some rooms look wild with their paint, but it works with the strange denizens of this house. The character sprites being large help make the proportions of the house seem right (doors, the grandfather clock, etc), the dining table), but others seem off, such as the super tiny grate outside. Some items are hard to see, and don't stand out, that could be intentional as its a hunt n find type of game, but come on game, help us out a bit.
Sound: 8
So many of the players have memorable themes. And if you don't want to listen to it, just shut off their music (each kid is equipped with it). The other random songs are not as good (save for some records), and for things like the cut scenes of what the Eds are up to, but its all pretty memorable. The sound effects are pretty weak. The running faucet, the alarm, it works, but I think both could have been done better.
Addictiveness: 8
Now if you hate point and click games, you won't like this. It might seem slow and boring. I like this game, and I like being able to play with the other specialties and see how they resolve the situation in different endings. Different resolutions, alternate endings (good and bad) there is a lot to this game, if one wants to dig through the items and sink their teeth into it.
Story: 6
Not particularly great, but I'll give it a pass based on B movie hokey plots. The Ed family is pretty dysfunctional, the aliens range from maniacal to misunderstood. I wish more had been given to any of the player characters for personality and likes, only Bernard, Razor and Syd seem to show any situations of liking or disliking things differently than other kids. Especially wish Dave had more personality, despite being the leader, he has no skills of his own. BRING IT DUDE, ITS YOUR GIRLFRIEND.
Depth: 9
So much to see and do! Some things that aren't important to beating the game still have uses you can do in the game, such as the high pitched record shattering a vase, using the package to make friends with Weird Ed. There are a lot of red herrings, but thats what makes these games have charm, using your noodle for figuring out the riddles to solve the game.
Final Score: 9.4
This might seem to be high, but there is a reason this game is a cult classic. It  even got a TV show (Sadly not very based on teh game, despite a few characters).  The excellent, no, superb themes for the teens is strong and memorable. The multiple endings add replay, as does the time it takes to figure out what items can be used for.
Maniac Mansion is not particularly long once you figure out what to do, and can be fun to replay quickly with other teams to see how they end it. Some of the house become allies, some will always throw you in the dungeon. But this is a fun madhouse I don't actually mind being stuck in for awhile.

Maniac Mansion - NES   iN008
Maniac Mansion for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Review by iN008 as requested by Jordanv78.
Maniac Mansion was developed by LucasFilm ( or LucasArts as we know of the company today ) and developed by Jaleco USA.
LucasFilm at this point at this point had made some games for the Atari systems... which this game is a port of.
So I hope you will give it a though for a game to play-though, now time for the review,
Maniac Mansion really shouldn't be overlooked. It really offers more than I expected from an adventure puzzle-solving game,
In-fact if it wasn't for Jordan I would have overlooked the game myself, but thanks to him I really have found this little gem!
If you ignore the fact its a port from an Atari... ( ohh god Atari are so bad ... ) don't start that with me... because although
Atari weren't know for their mind boggling games they did have some hidden gems amongst them..
So lets get down to the scores and ratings;
Graphics ;
 Score : 8/10    Rating : Great!
Sound ;
 Score : 7/10    Rating : Good.
Addictiveness ;
 Score : 3/10    Rating : Poor.
Story ;
 Score : 5/10    Rating : Neutral.
Depth ;
 Score : 8/10    Rating : Great!
Difficulty ;
 Score : 5/10    Rating : Neutral.
Overall ;
 Score : 6/10    Rating : Good.

Now to talk about each category in detail,
Graphics : 8/10
Now I know what your thinking, eww how could you even think of rating these graphics so high! They are just horrible...
Well... It is easy, I feel it would be wrong to demote the score for a game which was actually a port from an Atari console...
Not good enough? Well to be perfectly honest, I love the charm of the designs, it fits the more low-budget movie theme you get as you play.
If you rate everything on the way it looks you wouldn't really go and rate the eye-sore shoot-em ups now would you...
Now If I'm going to be honest I feel as if a little more attention could have been put into the graphics but wouldn't the ruin
the game? If everything was to be big sparkly and eye catching would you notice the key on top of the glass chandelier? No I think not,
the simple graphics of this point and click horror styled game helps you play which is by far worthy of the rating alone, but now for another
reason each character you see is unique and distinguishable, each character you control has his or her own look and that's a definite yes-yes! Another thing I shall quickly mention before moving onto sound is the references seen within the game here is the two I saw within the graphics, in Ed's room you can see an X-Wing model which is an obvious reference to LucasFilm's very own Star-Wars movie series, the other reference can be found in the green tentacle's room you will see the two large speakers, these are THX sound speakers.. And guess what... LucasFilm developed the THX high-quality sound technology... talk about self-promotion...
Sound : 7/10
I'll admit it, I like in-game music for almost every game and sometimes I feel I shouldn't even rate the category at all, but
that would defeat the point of doing this review now wouldn't it? Each character has a CD player which each of which play a specific song relative to the character which literally fits into their design. Turn your CD player off and everything goes silent... Adding to the atmosphere.
Not to mention some of the sound effects for interacting with objects are spot-on, for example go to the kitchen once inside the mansion and turn the faucet on, what does it sound like? A tap running that's right! What it should be.
Another thing to mention is if you go upstairs and into the right room you go into a music room, you can play the piano... yup... and what did you know... music comes out! Shocking right?
Now go to the downstairs living room, play the old radio... creepy sounds... honestly the list goes on, the sounds are top-notch but still not perfect!
Addictiveness : 3/10
This is one of the few games that manages to get me to play for a unusual amount of time, there is nothing to attract you to play again,
and it doesn't help the story doesn't really get you into the same mind-set as the character... I must save... and so on... but at least
it managed to get me to play for a good chunk of time and even got me to do this review! So I cannot say much more about addictiveness
so I'll get on over to the next subject...
Story : 5/10
As I say previously the story doesn't get you into the characters mind-set and to be honest it feels a bit cliché, the slightly...
but not really... generic save the damsel in distress. This kind of story-line had been used countless amounts of times in gaming
and had even in 1990 become a dry story-line to use. But at-least they used a twist to the generic save the day game... they made
it a horror-styled ( slightly comical ) game, which is quite unusual even in these days... so a meteorite crashed near the home around
20 years ago... the arrival of the Edison aliens.. And more recently the girl name Sandy ( the damsel in distress ) goes missing
so Dave ( Pretty generic name *cough* ) plans to save her recruiting two pupils from his school ( whom you get to pick ) to aid him
in his quest.
Depth : 5/10
I wasn't really sure what to put for this category, but here goes nothing.
The game offers a bit of exploration which is pretty critical for saving your damsel in distress Sandy. You can play two ways,
Wonder around and take it slowly learning how the game works as you go along, or cheat... by following a guide.... which... just
ruins the feeling of accomplishment... Moving swiftly on.
Difficulty : 5/10
As stated in the depth category, the game can be played in two ways, using a guide or exploring yourself to get that feeling of
accomplishment. Now lets face the fact, puzzle solving games aren't for everyone ( which is more or likely a deterrent for some
players ) but I do recommend trying it for the simple fact... It isn't too hard but can make you think for a while.
For example when I first played the game and got into the kitchen my character whom had collected vital items for what I had to
get done first got caught and locked in the dungeon. So I learned from this experience to not give one character all the items
and instead give the items to each character whom I'll move to different rooms to do the tasked needed in order to save Sandy.
In retrospect I feel as the game will make you learn from your mistake which is why I have rated it a 5/10 for a neutral difficulty
Overall : 6/10
So here we are at the conclusion,
This game is a must play for the puzzle solving player / enthusiast and even novice puzzle players as it really does feel like
a classic. The game offers a decent experience and really can make you think, the horror aspect which really doesn't scare you
could make you feel as if you can continue and complete the game without losing... So I dare you to go play this game as I was
and even make your own review because I would love to see what other people have to say about the game. I wasn't even expecting
so much from this game and it actually surprised me.. So please give it a go I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
And as always, thanks for reading my review, please give me any tips for future reviews or even review request
as now I am accepting all games to review without refusal!

If You Haven't Played Maniac Mansion...Play It Today!!   kramer4077
Thanks for reading my review of Maniac Mansion for Nintendo! --kramer4077
Overall: 10/10--Since I found this website I wanted to review Maniac Mansion!  It is truly an original awesome RPG!  I must have played this for dozens of hours in the 90s as a child trying to beat it.  The first time I turned the game on I even had difficulty opening the front door of the mansion!  But I was probably 8 years old, so cut me some slack  This game takes a lot of strategy to beat and it is so much fun to play!  If you've never played Maniac Mansion...now is the time!!
Graphics: 9/10--This game has very unique graphics.  A very creative cartoon-style mansion and characters are in this game.  You control the game cursor with your NES gamepad.  At times it's a bit tricky to get the cursor to click exactly what you want, but otherwise graphics are cool!
Sound: 10/10--The music is unforgettable and will be stuck in your head for a lifetime!  I could hum Syd's theme song right now if you asked me to.  There are plenty of realistic sound effects and eerie music as well.
Addictiveness:  9/10--I played this game a lot as a child.  I couldn't beat the game then.  Since I know how to beat the game now, I don't play it quite so much, but it is still a favorite of mine!  There are multiple ways to beat this game using different character combinations.  After you beat the game one way, it's fun to try and use different characters and beat the game a in a slightly different way!
Story: 10/10--You begin by choosing your characters in addition to Dave.  Choose wisely because each of the other "kids" has special skills .  To beat the game I recommend getting someone who can fix the phone (Bernard or Jeff) and one of the musicians (Syd or Razor).  There are other combinations of "kids" you can choose to beat the game though.  You then go through the game telling the "kids" what to do and where to move with a cursor.  As a young child I went through the mansion picking up every single item there was, but you mainly need the keys and a few select items to get through the game (can of Pepsi anyone? :-D)
Depth:  10/10--As previously mentioned the "kids" have different skills, so there's more than one way to beat the game.  That is, until you come to the end when you need to go through the same process in order to beat the game.  There is also a seemingly endless amount of items to collect as you go through the house and it's fun to play the game just trying to pick up every item that you can!
Difficulty: 10/10--This game is very difficult to beat.  I never beat it as a child.  I finally beat it when YouTube came out and someone posted a video of how to beat it.  This isn't your typical Mario-style game where you just follow the level until the end.  This game requires you to run through a mansion multiple times using gaming-skills to determine what the next step toward beating the game is.  You need to collect keys that unlock certain doors in a different part of the house, as well as use items from one room in a totally different part of the mansion.  The difficulty will keep you thinking as you make your way through this Nintendo gem!

Maniac Mansion is Massively Impressive   Zircron Swift
At an earlier date the company LucasArts, the same company that made Curse of Monkey Island and several Star Wars spin-off games, was known as LucasFilm. This company has been around since 1982, just before the great Video Game Crash of 1983. The company worked hard to create games for Atari and they normally get great feedback, but due to some postponing issues Atari had with its home computer version of the console (The Atari 800), they were unable to release some of these games for that home console officially until 1986. In 1987, they released Maniac Mansion initially for the Commodore 64 and Apple II, although it did find its way into the Atari ST at later dates. In 1990, the NES port was released.
You know how Earthbound made fun of all the traditional RPG and science fiction clichés? Well, in a sense, this game does that, but for horror. The games story was based on B-Movies (low budget films) and horror films, and the mansion in question was based on the main house at Skywalker Ranch. If game designers put the effort to base the mansion in the game on a real life mansion, then there must clearly be a lot of inspiration about this game. When that happens, the end product is normally a very interesting game to play. Now, I have never heard of this game before, but apparently some people regard it as one of the best NES games around. If it's so great, how come I never heard about it? Well, let's have a look.
As the game starts up, it gives you a little back story. 20 years ago, a meteor crashed by a mansion. That's it. You see a little meteor crash by a mansion as a cut-scene, which is nice to see, seeing how rare they are in NES games. Then the lights of the mansion light up bit by bit in time with the music. This all adds up to be a very impressive opening screen. The music is awesome, the graphics are great, and the way the lights are turned on in time with the music really creates a feel for a horror setting. Even though this is a late NES game, it's still a very impressive sight to see. I also like how the text just swirls in and does weird patterns. This is a game that clearly has a lot of work put into it.
So as you start the game, you are greeted with even more awesome music and a character selection screen. That song is Dave’s theme. You can pick between 7 different characters, like Jeff, the "Surfer Dude", or you can pick Razor. She is a musician. There is also your stereotypical geek/nerd Bernard, Michel the photographer, Syd who wishes to start his own band and Wendy, who is a pro at writing things up. Each character has certain properties that will help you in your quest. And yes, they do all have their own unique and awesome sound track like Dave. You need to pick three kids to play as (well, two, as Dave is selected as default), and then hit start. You’ll notice you need to navigate that arrow to move around the screen instead of using the D-Pad or Select to select options like many other games. That's because this is a Point and Click game, and I dare say one of the first around at the time.
Ok, the story is that Dave’s girlfriend, Sandy, has been kidnapped by the mad scientist Dr. Fred, and has been taken to this mansion. You just simply have to rescue her. Depending on what characters you choose, you solve the game differently. The best part about it is that you have to work out how to beat the game with those characters. It isn’t immediately obvious what you have to do and how you do it. There is no one way to solve this puzzle of a game, and that’s pretty advanced for a NES game. Actually, this game was very ahead of it’s time, as it was originally on the Commodore 64, making it all the more impressive. The characters interact with each other as they discuss what to do. Again, depending on what characters you pick, the opening when you begin the game will be a little different, like how Michel says he saw a horror film where four kids explored a haunted house, but can’t go much further than that, indicating something terrible happened. That’s just hilarious, seeing how they are going to do the same thing.
The game starts of very easy in terms of puzzle solving. Dave even says you should look for a key under the door mat. Again, this is quite funny to poke fun at the cliché. There are a total of 12 options to interact with all the items in this game. They are all self explanatory; however, using the commands themselves can be a little confusing, like open. Sure, simple enough, but it’s what you can open with that option that throws me off a little. Sure, it opens doors and stuff like that, but would you think to open bushes? No, I wouldn’t have either. You can’t use the “use” option on lamps and such, it has to be “turn on/off”, which makes sense, but you have to be quite literal in this game. Apart from that, pretty much everything makes more or less perfect sense. There aren’t much excessive things that would make you think “How the heck was I meant to work that out”, because they do make sense when you think about it. Each player has a CD player, which you can turn on and off to control the music. That’s a nice touch.
Another thing I love about this game is that it has cut-scenes during the game. This is one of those rare games that have cut-scenes in. They might not be as impressive as the Ninja Gaiden ones, but it’s up there. The game is also time based, and you have to react to those cut-scenes when they happen. You can run away from the people living in the house, and they could be walking around and spot you, and capture you. Again, this is quite advanced for it’s time. How you react to those cut-scenes can determine how the game plays out. It is also possible for you to die a number of times. The fact that there are so many variables in this game it’s amazing it came out so early. You can also get little jokes here and there, like if you try and use the “use” option on the toilet. Its little things like that that makes a great game.
The music is a mixed bag. Yes, the music is simply amazing in every aspect; the eerie music that plays when you meet one of the residences of the house creates a mood like that of a horror film. Each and every one of the characters music is awesome to listen to and tells us about that character, and there is a great variety of styles to listen to. However, it does get annoyed every now and then. I’m not sure what it is, but the music gets on my nerves sometimes. The music fits the character, not the surroundings, which is what I’m used to. Listening to some good and cheerful music when in a house with blood on the walls and moving tentacles isn’t really the most appropriate music to listen to. It just doesn’t match the surroundings. However, I will admit, it’s not so annoying that I want to turn it off. After a while, it starts to lose its annoying factor (somehow…) and starts to sound great again. I’m not ever sure how that works, if I’m honest.
The graphics are great, if a little cheesy. The blood of the wall looks like it could be made off Microsoft Paint. It is, however, a nice touch seeing the blood pour out of the fridge. Why is the blood orange instead of red? Sandy looks like the stereotypical damsel in distress, and everyone living in the house has green coloured skin. The detail they put in the background is pretty nice. This serves well in a Point and Click game, where you are looking around very nook and cranny. These most often work a little like red herrings, but at other times this serves it purpose as a think you can move or open. The tentacles look a little disgusting and there’s a mummy with glasses on. It’s clear they put a lot of detail into this game.
I love how about a quarter of the game is full of useless stuff. I’m almost certain that the chainsaw is useless, as I fail to find any “gas” for it, and there is a point you can press a red button, which I wouldn’t recommend doing unless you saved first. The navigation around the screen can be a little bit of a pain and can be slow. It also requires patients and trail and error, as the first time you play this you might get captured in the first five minutes. It would require a fair bit of creative thinking to get all the way to the end, and a fair bit more to explore all possibilities. There is also a can of Pepsi in this game, no kidding. Isn't it weird to see a brand name in a NES game?
Overall, I give this game a 9.5/10      This game is truly remarkable in every sense. It was well ahead of it’s time and set the bench mark for future Point and Click games, with surprisingly a lot of replay value. It’s clear where the humour comes from the Money Island games, and you can see close resemblances to those games. Yes, the two games were created by the same company, but it’s glad to see they didn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken. If you don’t like puzzle games or Point and Click games, then you won’t enjoy this very much. However, for those who love a good puzzle, then this is one of the finest from the NES. A hidden gem worth knowing about.

But when a sweet young cheerleader named Sandy disappeared into the basement, boyfriend Dave knew it was time to take a look behind the good doctor's door. Your task is to help Dave choose a rescue team and guide them on the wildest, wierdest mission your NES system has ever seen. The storyline depends on the individual talents and quirks of the team members you select, and no matter how many times you play, the outcome is never quite the same. Sometimes it's puzzling, sometimes scary, sometimes downright funny, but it's always, always a challenge.
