Kirby's Avalanche Reviews

Overall 8.8    Graphics 7.7    Sound 8    Addictive 8    Story 7    Depth 6.3    Difficulty 6

7.8
An intersting clone of puyo puyo.   RedHotToddy
I have never been a big fan of puzzle games that much, except for that one game I reviewed for the Game boy advance called puyo puyo fever, But just then, I found this underrated gem of a game called Kirby's avalanche, This game seems to be a mix between Kirby and puyo puyo, But does that really mean this is a bad game? Hmm...let's just find out ourselves! This is Kirby's avalanche for the SNES, Let's get this one started!
Story-7/10
The main plot behind this game is that one day in dream land, everybody is getting excited for some sort of competition held by king dedede, this is called the ghost trap avalanche, Kirby has decided to accept his challenge, thus, he then travels through the forest to compete against all of his friends and foes in this big competition.
Gameplay-8/10
As like all puyo puyo games, these colored globs called puyos are falling from the top of the screen and thus, you must get them to disappear in order to send "Trash" to your opponent's room, The more puyo you make disappear, the more trash you will send to your opponent's room, Whoevers room is full and loaded with trash first loses, thus the opposing player wins. The controls are pretty simple, You use the A B and X buttons to turn your stacks of puyo, and you press the D-pad in order to move the pile. There are 3 different game modes in this game, There is the main story mode, in which you lead Kirby on a quest to win king dedede's ghost trap competition, P1 vs P2 mode, where you can play the game with a friend, and last but not least, there is the practice mode, where you can just practice your puyo puyo skills by yourself. One thing I like about this game is that all of Kirby's friends and foes from the previous games appear, and those people include Whispy woods, waddle Dee, Meta knight, that snowman guy, and so on.
Graphics-8/10
This game was made way later in the SNES life span, 1995 to be exact, and for what it is worth, It is pretty good! I mean of course the game is colorful, I mean the whole game is centered around stacking COLORFUL blocks! Haha, as for the characters, they look pretty good as well, Kirby looks fine, king dedede looks good, and yeah all of Kirby's friends and foes from his previous adventures are here as well, And they look better then ever! The HUD in each match is pretty self explanatory, It shows your score, your room of puyo, your incoming trash, and that is pretty much it. For a game that was made way later in the SNES life span, this is pretty good!
Sound-7/10
Right off the bat, you get some little tiny kid yelling out "Kirby avalanche!" But oh well, The soundtrack in this game is rather OK, but the best part of the game overall is that all the stages use remixed versions of some songs from previous Kirby games! For example, one level in particular uses the butter building song from Kirby's adventure, and this is remixed very decently, but as for the actually sound effects, they are your typical fare to say the least, you get booms, disappears, thuds, and heck, you even get some and I say SOME character vocals here and there, but they are very quiet and brief.
Addictiveness-8/10
How likely am I to play this game again? That is a tough one to say the least, It really depends on If I am the kind to actually play puzzle games alot, Nah! Just kidding! The game has quite alot of charm and whatnot to make you come back for more and more, and one instance of this is the practice mode, As I trained and trained in the practice mode, I have gotten way better at making combos and just playing this game in general!
Depth-8/10
The game itself is pretty long and offers quite alot to do, first of all, there is a 2-player versus mode where you can challenge your friend to puyo-stacking, and I remembered playing this mode quite alot with my best friend back then, and the main story mode itself is only like 12 stages, so It will most likely take you 30 minutes to get through that! And last but not least, there is a practice mode where you can brush up on your puyo-stacking skills by yourself, and that mode works out pretty well to say the least!
Difficulty-6/10
The game should not really give you that much trouble actually, I mean there is a difficulty level and all, But in the end, the game just comes off as very easy even at the harder difficulty levels, Never once did I have trouble on any levels at all, okay maybe that pesky 9th level, But the game never really gave me that much trouble after that, and that is for the best!
Overall-7.8/10
If you need a good puzzle fix, or heck, even a Kirby fix, then I actually would recommend this one! I mean, it does have quite alot of depth of fun factor to it to keep you coming back for more and more, and that is pretty good! I gave this game a 7.8 because how much the game offers and how it stands up by itself considering It is a puzzle game, so anyways, that has been Kirby's avalanche! This has been RedHotToddy, And I am signing off!

Avalanche Warning   tornadocam
November is upon on us and that means Winter is one month away. However for some places November brings the first snowfall and that can mean avalanche. Except today I will not be talking about the weather event. Today, I am going to be reviewing a puzzle game called Kirby's Avalanche. Lets see how this game compares to similar games.
Story: 8

It is time for the annual Avalanche Championship Tournament in Dreamland. King DeDeDe was the previous champion and Meta Knight was the champion before King DeDeDE. Kirby enters the event hoping to become Dreamland's new Champion. However, it will not be easy as Kirby must defeat several characters. In addition, he must go up against the previous two champions King DeDeDe and Meta Knight. The player controls Kirby in his quest. To do so you must match or get 4 beans or marbles of the same color to connect . Also you must make your way to the championship round by going through several characters.

Okay, I actually like the plot here and that is saying a lot because most puzzle games are not known for their stories. But this one has a creative story to it. Having a puzzle championship is kind of creative it offered something new to the Kirby Series. In most Kirby games its usually Dark Mind or Dark Matter as he is sometimes called invading Dream Land. Another game saw King DeDeDe try to raid kitchens in Dreamland. It actually feels like a Kirby game with all the main characters in it.  I give the story  good solid 8 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 9

The graphics are very good for this type of game. The beans or marbles are very bright and colorful. The sprites match the characters very well. Also the backgrounds go along with the different levels. In fact, the graphics are almost the same as another similar game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. I will get to that in a little bit. I think the graphics are pretty good considering unlike other Kirby games there are not any long stages in this game.

The controls are pretty good and moving the beans/marbles is actually easy and smooth. That is pretty much the only control in this game is trying to control were the marbles land or match. Not one time does the game have a lag to it. In some puzzle games lags are common. But not this game. Overall, I give the graphics and controls a 9 out of 10.

Sound: 7

The soundtrack in this game is very good.  The tunes I find to be relaxing for this type of game. I have found puzzle games often have relaxing tunes which is good, considering you have to concentrate sometimes. The sounds the game makes when you advance, lose, or match marbles is very good.

However, they are some parts of the sound that could have been better. The announcing voice changes as you go to different characters. The change in voice can actually give a scratchy sound. Sometimes the voices get soft and loud. I don't know if that was done on purpose or did the makers of this game have different voice actors. Either way the announcing voices could have been improved. Thus, I give the sound a good 7 out of 10. The scratch sound of the announcers brings it down a little bit

Replay Value 8

Kirby's Avalanche is a fun game to play even though it is a copy of Pyryo Pyro and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Machine. It offers its own spin to those games by including Kirby Characters. If your a Kirby fan who doesn't like a game that has Meta Knight in it. Also this is a game that offers something different than typical Kirby Games. This is one of those games were its fun and can be relaxing at the same time. I find myself playing this game when I want to take a break from my other favorite games.

Depth: 5

Like Most puzzle games the game suffers somewhat in lack of depth. As I have explained in my other reviews. When I think of games with high depth of I think of Mega Man, Mario, and Most Kirby Games. In those games there are secrets to find, different paths to explore, items to collect and the stages are usually long. In this game there are none of that. However, there are some depth to this game that keeps it from getting a low rating. The main thing being there are 13 characters to get through 16 if you include the 3 training levels. That can take awhile especially if you lose. So this is a game that despite there being no long stages it takes awhile to conquer. Second, some of the puzzle battles can take a while especially once you advance. So I give the depth a middle of the road rating of 5 out of 10.

Difficulty: 6

The difficulty in puzzle games is hard to rate sometimes. For some people these games are easy on the other hand some people might find these games difficult. I tried to rate this game from neither an easy or hard point of view. The game does try to help you out by letting you try three tutorial stages. These stages you learn how to blend the marbles and the game gives you techniques you can use to help. Still there are some difficult parts in this game.

The beans/marbles are random so you have to make do with what colors your given. Also if you start getting your box full of marbles the pace picks up. If your opponent gets an avalanche it puts you in a tight spot that will require skill and creativity to get out of. The bosses (characters get harder as you advance just like in DR. Robotnik's game.  I really did not start having problems till I got up to the 10th boss. As I hinted above if your box gets full the pace picks up. Well, that is true also as you advance. The last 4 characters the pace really picks up a lot. This game requires you to adjust your strategy and techniques a lot to advance.

I give the difficulty a 6 out of 10. Its not a real easy game but not real hard either. However, as I stated there are some things that can make this game a little difficult. But its the right difficulty for a puzzle game. The game challenges your skill, creativity, and quickness. But at the same time the game is not too difficulty that once would easily get frustrated.

Overall rating 8.4

Kirby's Avalanche came out in the mid 1990's one year after Sega released Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Yes that is right Kirby's Avalanche is a copy of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. But both games were a copy of a Japanese game called Pyro Pyro. Sega took the Japanese game and used their characters. Nintendo couldn't use Mario because they already had the Dr. Mario puzzle line. So they changed the characters into Kirby Characters. The result was Kirby's Avalanche.

Despite this game being a copy of other games it is still a good game to play. Kirby's Avalanche is a good puzzle game that is fun for people of all ages. I really had fun playing this game. It seems to offer something new to the Kirby line while keeping the same characters. The story for this type of game was neatly designed. The colors are very clear and are not fuzzy at all. The graphics for the most part are nicely done. The themes in this game is very good. The difficulty is just about right for this type of game.

However, there are a few negatives in this game. The main thing being the announcers voice. It seems like Nintendo hired different voice actors for this game. Now in a game like Mario, Mega Man that would be fine since you have a lot of different characters. But in this game I am not sure if that was needed. Plus why does the voices get soft and loud. That never really made sens to me. The thing that is kind of annoying is the scratch sound in the voices. It makes me wonder if this game was kind of rushed  a little bit. What I mean is did Nintendo feel like after Sega made Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine that they had to get a similar game out quickly that they didn't test the sound out? When this game came out Nintendo already had or was making Donkey Kong Country Series, and Yoshii's Island. Even though the game is good I think the sound is kind of sloppy at times and it could be that Nintendo rushed to get this game out. I also wonder if maybe Nintendo put more time in their other projects when it came to sound.  Those are really the only  negatives in this game. To most gamers these would be very minor

Overall i give the game an 8.4. Its a solid and fun game to play. This game is fun from the young to the old. It would be a great game to introduce a child to. It is also a good game for adults to play as well. This game can be addicting as you advance. The negatives I mentioned may not bother most people. This game has a lot going for it. I must say Bust a Move, Dr. Mario, Robotniks Machine and this game are my favorite puzzle games to play. So the question is would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game. It is one that I think you will enjoy and have fun doing so. I highly recommend it. So in summary 8.4 sounds about right.

Magestix, this is not tetris....Nicovaldez, this is a clone on puyo puyo, a very popular block dropping puzzle game in Japan, and Mean Bean is the same. Mean Bean in my opinion is the best though, because of the nostalgia of Mega Collection.
