Jester's Challenge Game Description

Jester's Challenge is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by MarkeyJester featuring a simple maze-like level hack which extended into one of several proof of concepts.

As soon as the ROM is loaded Sonic is dropped into a level called the Param Zone. Jester can be seen in many locations in the maze and when you press B while standing next to him an arrow will appear above his head directing you to where you should go. At particular points he may have short messages to say like "You're on track!".

Most of the normal monitors from the original Sonic 1 are present as well as two new monitors. Monitors with red and blue arrows inside will change the stage layout when hit, and hitting monitors with a snowflake in them will freeze the entire stage or thaw it out if it is already frozen. Wind turbines can be seen in the background at the top of the maze and as Sonic proceeds further downward in the stage things get hotter as the pallette changes and heat shimmers indicate an inferno in the background. When everything is frozen the heat shimmers aren't there, the turbines stop moving and Sonic's breath can be seen. Motobugs appear in many random places in the maze.

Once the player reaches the end of the maze, there will be something big and suprising waiting for him/her, however, the only way for YOU to find out what "it" is, is to play right through it, good luck!

Jester's Challenge Review by: Mohammedroxx3 - 9/10

A brain popping hack!
Well, hello everyone, it's me again with another game review. I'm surprisingly starting to make game reviews almost everyday now. Making game reviews are very fun while it requires lots of effort and I hope my pace in making reviews almost everyday stays like this or becomes even faster. Anyways, let us start talking about this one heck of a stressing hack!

So from the title of the review, you might expect some great hack, or maybe an extremely hard maze or puzzle. Well, this hack is actually a maze, a very hard maze! But yet a short game with only one level. And surprisingly this is a hack of Sonic the hedgehog! I'm actually surprised that this hack is called "jester's challenge" and that it is a sonic hack. Also unlike other Sonic the hedgehog hacks, this hack is completely changed! Or at least almost completely different form the original. As if Sonic's is in a complete different world! Normally you expect sonic games to all be simple running. Well, not always easy but definitely not something like a puzzle or maze. Definitely a huge maze or a puzzle is not a sonic the hedgehog type of a game. But a great hacker decided to create a huge maze for sonic to go through. And I got to say, this is not a bad game, not bad at all. This is one heck of a unique Sonic the hedgehog hack. And this hack is an unexpected type of game for Sonic. So once you start the ROM, it right away just says "PARAM ZONE" and then Sonic just comes falling right in to the maze. No intro, no title screen, no nothing!

Gameplay: 9

Well, the gameplay of this hack is pretty well done I guess. Sonic doesn't really have any new or special signature moves in this hack. And he can't spin dash either. All he can do is just run, jump, and while running you can press down to roll. Sonic's running speed is about the same like the original Sonic the hedgehog, but the real thing that was changed is his jumping height. He jumps a lot higher than normal which can be useful in some cases for jumping in a maze like this. If he had the same jump height like the original Sonic the hedgehog, then it would be pretty difficult for Sonic to go through most parts of the maze. Other than that, Sonic is pretty much the same like himself. Now, lets talk about the maze. As you would expect, the maze is very hard and challenging, it might take a very long time to complete and after you complete it, there is a little surprise that I can't spoil. In fact after you have been playing this game, you might start thinking this game as stressful but just because this Sonic hack stressful doesn't mean that you have to rate the game bad. Unless the game is hard from glitches and things like that. But this game doesn't seem to be glitchy at all! In fact, I didn't see a single glitch while I was playing this game! That shows that the person who made this game is one heck of a skilled hacker who has put lots of effort in to this hack! It's almost flawless! This is a really hard maze though, it took me about 30 to 40 minutes to complete this hack. Afterwards, my head felt like it was about to explode like a balloon from how hard this maze was, but now I'm trying to soothe my head by typing up this game review. Also the only things in this maze is just Sonic, a strange looking creature (which I will talk about in the story portion of my review), lost motobugs from green hill zone, and some breakable TV. The only types of TVs are just the one that gives 10 rings, invincibility, speed shoes, and a strange monitor with a red and blue arrow that changes the maze layout and another strange monitor with a snowflake that makes the environment on fire or very cold. Which is really cool! And the music changes whenever the environment of the mazes switches from hot to cold or vice versa.  And that is it for the gameplay section of my review.

Graphics: 8

The graphics are not bad! Not bad at all actually! I like how the maze is dark and purple while sonic and rings would blend in the color of the environment of the maze. Also when you destroy a snowflake monitor, the environment freezes! Plus sonic turns more whitish and you can see his breath! Very cool! Also if you destroy the snowflake monitor again, it switches back to hot and when you go all the way to the bottom of the maze, the environment goes on fire while everything blends in!  And that shows lots of effort for the graphics! Also shows the potential of the sega genesis graphics. Amazing! Also I have seen that some of the springs are white instead of yellow. And if you destroy the speed shoes monitor, sonic's shoes would start to sparkle! And that actually shows that you have speed shoes on! Yup, the graphics are pretty well done, and thats it for the graphics portion of my review!

Sound: 7

The sound is alright and it does match the environment well. Well, sonic's jumping sound effect and destroying a monitor or motobug sound effect is the same like the original. At least that shows that your playing as the "real" classic sonic from sonic the hedgehog though your in a completely different world. While everything else is completely changed. The background music is alright, though it can sometimes be annoying and stressful when you repetitively keep hearing it while your trying to solve the maze. At least when you hit the snowflake monitor, the music would change when it gets cold or hot but there are only 2 different background musics. Also the invincibility background music has changed. All of the background musics match their environment and they sound a little tempting, challenging, uncomfortable, and stressing but thats how a hard maze is supposed to be like! And that is all for the sound portion of my review!

Addictiveness: 9

Well, I got to say that this is one heck of an addictive game alright! You will just have that tempting feeling that you just want to finally beat that maze and find out what will happen in the end! You will never get off your seat to tell you finish the maze! It gives you the feeling of excitement! You will here the following words in your brain as you play this hack, "Must! Beat! Maze! Want! To! know! what! happens! next!!!" Yup, no kidding. I warn you, this is very time consuming! Play this game at at your own risk. I recommend you only play this when you have lots of freetime! Don't say that I didn't warn you, and thats it for the addictiveness section of my review!

Story: 7

Now is were things start get exciting a bit, though the story is sort of simple, I mean it's a lot more exciting than the same old "It's up to Sonic to go and defeat Dr. Eggman!". Something different for once. I doubt this is a spoiler though because it comes at the first second when you start the rom. Though the ending is a spoiler so I won't say the ending. So what happens is that there is no intro or sega screen. Nor is there a title screen, it just immediately says "PARAM ZONE" and Sonic arrives falling down in to the maze. And then a strange looking creature comes and says that this is his challenge and he has to go through the maze. He also mentions that it's a pain killer. But there is no time limit and you can collect rings. And that creature doesn't look that evil but a little strange though. In fact, at several places, you will meet him again, then he will bring out a sign that says "B", and when you press B when you meet him, he will tell you what direction you are supposed to go to. So he does help you out a bit and at times he might say, "Your on track!". Yup, so the story is sort of more exciting than the original, so it doesn't deserve such a bad rating. And thats it for the story section of my review!

Depth: 10

Well, this game sure has lots of depth and takes almost an hour to beat (for me), or maybe it might seem even impossible to beat! There is a huge maze, a strange creature who helps him at times, poor motobugs lost in the maze, monitors, rings, changing environments and much more! Though all of the other previous sections already explained the depth. So I'm not sure what to say. Thats all for the depth portion of my review I guess...

Difficulty: 10

This is a very hard maze. It's not so easy to describe the maze from how hard it is. You meet the strange creature, he tell you to go left, then later on right, then down, then up, then... AH! too much! Also hitting the red and blue arrow monitor changes some of the maze layout which can lead you to your path, you mislead you depending on were you head too. Not sure what else to say here. Thats all for this part of my review!

OVERALL: 9

Well, this is a great game! Thats all for my review folks! Thanks for reading and good luck playing this maze! (Just don't play it. I warn you, too much addiction.) I wish you all a great day on vizzed! have fun everyone! :D
