Ganbare Goemon 3 - Shishi Juurokubei no Review by: Totts - 9.9/10

Ganbare Goemon 3
"One of the greatest action/adventure games on the system"

Gambare Goemon 3 was the third, and quite possibly the best, Goemon game to appear on the SNES. A combination of platform style action, and Zelda style adventure, it was very fun to play.

Control: 9/10

The controls were, for the most part, decent. Move around with the control pad, jump with one button, attack with another, use your special ability with the third, switch weapons with L&R, and switch characters with select. Each of the characters played slightly different, so the controls changed a little depending on who you are using at the time, but they were overall easy to use. There were a few things that could have been better though. For example, trying to jump from peg to peg with the hoola hoop was often time consuming and hard.

Graphics: 10/10

The graphics were very good. The characters were large and easy to see, and a lot of detail were put into them. For example, each one of them has their own idle pose, such as Ebisumaru wiping his face with a handkerchief or Yae brushing her hair out of her face. These little things made the game a lot more visually appealing. In addition, the large variety of backgrounds were all nice looking. Finally, the battles fought with Goemon Impact made good use of Mode 7 and, as a result, look fantastic.

Music & Sound: 9/10

The different music in the game all sounded quite good. The different levels and towns made use of a variety of songs. These usually fit the particular area well. Like the first two Goemon games for SNES, the music sounded like a combination of traditional and modern Japanese music.
The sound effects were also decent. However, there were a few problems. The main one was the sound the three male members of your party made when getting hit. When wounded, they make a very weird, and very annoying, noise. Yae, at least, sounds pretty good, since she actually sounds like a human. Other than that, though, the rest of the sound effects were fine.

Story: 10/10

Since the story is in Japanese, a language I'm not familiar in, it would be unfair to rate this. However, from what I gathered, the story is the following. Wise Old Man, the scientific helper of Goemon, builds a time machine in order to go chase women in other times. However, Ebisumaru's evil twin sister Bismaru is planning to use the machine for her own devious plots. So, Goemon and his friends have to stop her. The story progresses through the game with various dialogues and cut scenes. Unfortunately, I can't understand any of the dialogue in the game. The cut scenes are often amusing and bizarre, so at least those are entertaining!

Gameplay: 10/10

The first two Goemon games on the SNES were pretty much action games with some influences from adventure games. This one is almost completely opposite. This one is really an adventure game with some action game parts to it. As a result, this one has a lot more depth to it. No longer can you just run through the overhead town areas in order to get to the next action sequence. In this game, almost the entire thing is played on the overhead screen. In a Zelda like fashion, you travel through different areas, battling enemies. When you reach towns, you must talk to the populace in order to get clues and find valuable items. The different castles and dungeons in the game are played in the side scrolling action manner of the previous Goemon games, but even these are not straight action. In order to progress through these dungeons, you have to figure out puzzles, use the different characters in certain areas, and solve various other things. If you want to get through this game, you need to have both good reflexes and a sharp wit.

One of the strongest features in this game was the ability of having four characters at your disposal. However, unlike the previous games, these are available to you at any time after you get them. In fact, it will be necessary to keep switching characters in order to get through different areas. Each one has his or her own weapons and special abilities. Goemon, the main character, is fairly well rounded. His special ability is rather useless, but he has one of the best weapons, the pipe, and can eventually use it as a grappling hook kind of device. Ebisumaru, Goemon's fat friend, is essentially worthless in battle, but has the ability to shrink in order to get through small areas, and use his hoola hoop to hook onto pegs jutting out of walls. Sasuke, the robotic ninja created by Wise Old Man, is small and quick. His weapon has pretty short range, but he has the ability to bomb through certain walls. Yae, the pretty green haired female ninja, is slightly slower than Sasuke. However, her ability to turn into a mermaid in water is vital for reaching underwater areas. The inclusion of four different characters made the game a lot more interesting and fun. Having to constantly keep switching in order to use each ones' abilities at the right time gave the game a lot more variety. However, there was the problem that the characters were rather unbalanced. I ended up using Yae for almost the entire game, except for the places where I had to switch, because she seemed like the best character overall. Some of the characters, especially Ebisumaru, you will probably never use unless you absolutely need their abilities to proceed. This is not a major problem, but it would have been better if the four characters were more balanced out so you would use each one equally.

Aside from the overhead and side scrolling areas, there were several other modes of play. Like in Gambare Goemon 2, there are several bosses you have to fight in the giant robot Goemon Impact. In amusing, yet cool, mode 7 battles, you must control the giant robot in order to defeat other giant robots. Its very Power Ranger-esque. In addition, there are a couple areas in which you are in ''chase mode''. You must control all four of the characters at the same time as they run away from various enemies. This can sometimes get complicated and difficult, but not too bad.

There are a couple other new things that were added to this installment of the series that were nice. One of which were the Moneki Neko ''Fortune Dolls''. In previous Goemon games, these dolls were used to give you better weapons. However, in this game, your new weapons are permanently given to you throughout the course of the game, so these cats have a completely different use. They act exactly like the Pieces of Heart in the Zelda series. There are many of them scattered through the game, and every time you find four of them, your life bar goes up. Finding them all was not necessary (although it would help), but finding them was a fun challenge. Another nice new feature was the ability to gain and pilot a mech during the game. Looking similar to Magitek Armor from FF6, the mech allowed you to reach certain areas and defeat enemies easily. Also, you can eventually gain new weapons for the mech, such as a flamethrower and ice beam, which are used for a variety of situations.

One final thing that made this game great was the large amounts of humor in it. Even if you don't speak Japanese, the many visual jokes will probably have you laughing through much of the game. And if you DO speak the language, you will be able to actually read the jokes, and probably have an even better time.

However, as great as this game is, it still has some problems. One of which is the fact it is rather short. Completing this game should only take you a few days, which is a lot shorter than other adventure games, such as Zelda. While it was a much longer game than any of the previous Goemon games, the fact is that they were action games, where as this one was an adventure, and so should have been longer. Another problem was the lack of mini games, which were very abundant in the first two titles. About the only mini games in Goemon 3 were the simple ones you needed to do in order to gain the characters various powers and items.

Finally, perhaps the biggest problem is that if you don't speak Japanese, you will never get through this game on your own. If you are not familiar with the language, make sure you have a FAQ handy for the translation.

Challenge: Medium-Hard

The game, like the first two, was fairly difficult. However, in this one, the difficulty comes from both solving puzzles and beating hard action areas. Still, the game is easier than the first one, and while providing ample challenge, is not exceptionally hard.

Overall, Gambare Goemon 3 was one of the most enjoyable games on the SNES. If you ever get the chance, I'd recommend giving it a try. While the large amount of Japanese text may deter some English (or any other language) speaking gamers.
