Flicky Review (Sega Genesis) metroidhunter72
NOTE: If you have never played this game, play it NOW. You are missing out.
Years ago, when I was little, I went shopping with my mom at Wal-Mart. I found this box laying on the floor in the toy section, and it was a Plug n play game. It consisted of 6 Sega Genesis games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, Dr. Robotnic's Mean Bean Machine and Flicky. I bought it, started it up, and played the games all day. I tried the games in order of how they are listed, and Flicky was last. It may be childish, but I still love it.
GRAPHICS: 8
Of course, the Sega Genesis didn't have super advanced graphics, but you can still manage to make out everything that's on the screen. You can tell the difference between the chicks with and without glasses, what the enemies are, and the words on screen.
SOUND: 9
The music is great! The songs are repetitive but catchy enough so that you won't get annoyed by them. The jump sounds resemble a bird tweeting, which makes sense since the main character is a bird. The enemies don't make any noise, but you will hardly notice. The music in the bonus rounds has got to be my favorite, I don't know why, I just always liked it and still do.
ADDICTIVENESS: 10
I still play this game a lot, I don't care if someone thinks it is for little kids, it is still fun. There are plenty of levels so you will keep playing until you give up or win, and always are trying to improve your high score to get extra lives. It's very satisfying to throw a plant at a cat and knock out two at the same time, you just fell like saying AWWWWWWWWW YEEAAAAAAAAAH. And just when you start to get bored, a bonus level comes on where you have to catch the falling birds in a net. This game just never gets old.STORY: 3There isn't much to say about the story, it seems like it is about a mother bird trying to save her babies from cats and lizards. There are two kinds of levels, the regular and the bonus rounds.DEPTH: 7Just like any platformer, most levels are the same, jumping around collecting items and/or trying to get to a goal. This is a bit different, you have to collect all the birds and bring them into the door. The level ends when you collect all of the birds and bring them to safety. The bonus levels add a bit more depth, but the game is still mostly the same throughout.DIFFICULTY: 4The game is pretty easy, as it seems to be aimed more towards kids then teens/adults. The levels get harder and harder as you go on, and eventually different enemies start to appear. The controls are easy to learn. Any button makes you jump besides the D-pad, touching an item will pick it up, and if you jump it will throw the item, which can kill enemies. Birds are collected the same way and have to be brought to the Exit.OVERALL: 8.5I love this game so much, I just wish that it offered a bit more then what it does. Lacking a story, it is a lot more fun then you would expect it to be for a kids game. A few tips: bring all of the birds into the exit at once, this will earn you much more points. Also, try to beat the level in under 20 seconds for a bonus 10000 points. Thanks for taking the time to read and rate my review, have a nice day!

Budget game at best becerra95
Another game I played through the plug n play, Flicky. It was mixed in with Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, and Dr Robotnik Mean Bean Machine. I used to play this game quite a bit with Mean Bean Machine and it was really fun. Does it still hold up these days or is it just another nostalgic take that my mind is playing? Story: 6
There’s not much of a story. You’re a Flicky trying to rescue the chicks from hungry cats called “Tiger” while avoiding the felines and Iggy the iguana that come after you. You lead the birds into safety of an “Exit” door and prevent them from falling to the prey. The story isn’t much but it’s at least a simple one to take.
A 6 out of 10.

The game was made during the genesis rise and it was pretty basic. The cats and birds look like… well cats and birds in a simple 16-bit console. I’m not sure what they were thinking since the game is seven years old by this time. The arcade version still looks a bit better than the port that came out for the Genesis. The backgrounds look a bit worse than the original, I don’t even know how? Overall, it’s still a good looking game but it’s lacking behind big during that time.

The soundtrack is very limited. I’m not even sure what they did but it’s more high pitched and screechy than the arcade. It’s not much of a Sega sound it’s just high frequency and screeching chirping sounds that’ll hurt the ears if wearing headphones. The music is cute and cheerful but you’ll get sick of it eventually.

The game offers no content other than the original arcade mode and bonus stages. Collecting chicks either one at a time or collectively for bonus points is all I can see that matters if going for a high score. The quicker you get them to safety, the higher the bonus score. The bonus stages usually is just Flicky catching the chicks with a net and gives extra points for the score. Earning enough gives you an extra life and that’s the only viable thing I see. It really has nothing else to offer.

Game is fun at first trying to get the highest score and all but you’ll get bored of it eventually. It just feels like a budget game the more I review about the game and it might had been back then… you’ll lose interest immediately if not going for a high score. I mean a casual play once in a while is fine too but the addictive is
A 6 out of 10
Difficulty : 7
The game is no means difficult. Like I said, it feels like a budget game but it doesn’t have a difficulty of one. Losing a life is practically a mistake of your own and can’t blame any cheap AI or anything. If all, it’s just an easy game to play with little hassle.
It’s a 7 out of 10
My final thoughts… the game feels like a total budget game. It lacks content, it’s easy, the graphics are behind compared to other games made in 1991 or before like Sonic the hedgehog or Altered beast. It’s cute yes and it’s enjoyable but you’ll put down the controller once you get a game over or beat the game. It’s more of a rental than anything if we’re talking about 90s era video game trends.
