Flash in Streets of Rage 2 Reviews

Overall 9.2    Graphics 7    Sound 10    Addictive 7    Story 8    Depth 4    Difficulty 7

8.3
Bare Knuckle II in a Flash   tornadocam
Bare Knuckle II also known as streets of rage 2 was a popular beat em up game for the Sega System. The game has been remastered several times. Also there are several hacks of this game. The Flash is a popular comic book hero mostly associated with the Justice League. As his name applies he is very fast.
Story: 8

After the defeat of Mister X leader of the crime world things seem to have returned to normal in the city. Suddenly a new outbreak of crime returns to the city. Mister X also kidnaps Adam in revenge for his defeat. He also hopes to lure Axle and Blaze into a trap.  Axle and Blaze get Adam's kid brother Skate, and Axles world champion wrestling friend Max to take down the crime organization. However, they also get help from the Flash a Justice League Hero to help them too. The Flash sets out to help his new friends, and bring Mister X to justice.

Okay, the story keeps up with the original. The only big change was the story was changed to tie the Flash into it. I personally like the idea of getting some of the justice league members on this type of game. When you really think about it, it kind of suits them find. The main issue I have with the story is how did they contact the Justice League and how did they get the Flash to help them. There are several possibilities here that could be explored. Its like the story is missing something. Still very good plot so I give it an 8 out of 10.
Graphics and Controls 7

The stage layouts have not been changed and the stages backgrounds are the same. That is very good because the stages as well as the backgrounds did not need to be changed at all. The original game had some of the best graphics for a Sega game. Moreover, the colors have been unchanged as well.  The sprites are also left unchanged. Basically the graphics from the original game have not been changed.

The controls in this version kind of suffer. The Flash is really hard to control at times. It seems like the controls got away from me a few times for being to fast. I know the Flash is supposed to have very fast speed. I guess that is what the maker was aiming at. But instead they could have made the Flash's moves seem faster. Instead you just move the control pad a little bit and you end up going father. It can be frustrating at times when you need to slow down to clear out enemies. The Flash's punches, kicks and use of weapons controls well. Therefore, I give the graphics and controls a 7 out of 10. The graphics part alone could get a 9 or a 10. The hard to control controls brings the rating down some
Sound: 10

The sound in this game is amazing. The music is very relaxing and upbeat at the same time. The original game had some of the best music. So it was a good thing that was not changed. The enemies sounds they make when they are hitting you or attacking you is awesome. I also like it when you knock out an enemy they moan or scream. The sounds the flash makes when he hits an enemy sounds like the original game. Nothing was changed in this version of the game. It would have been hard to top the original when it comes to sound so I am glad nothing was changed. Thus, I give the sound a perfect score of 10 out of 10.
Replay Value: 7

The Flash version is a fun hack to play and it is awesome getting to play as the Flash. I really like the idea of bringing in the Justice League here. I would like for other Justice League members esp Batman to appear in this type of game. However, I find myself going back to this game less than I do the other Bare Knuckle hacks. Is the game a bad game not at all !!!. The main problem is the controls can be frustrating and this is a very fast paced game. The controls kind of bring the replay value down some in this game. The game has other issues too that hurt it. But again I want to stress this is a fun game to play and one you should try just beware of the issues. I give the replay value a 7 out of 10.

Depth: 4

Well this is a beat em up type of game and most beat em ups have little depth. This version is no exception. When I think of high depth games I think of Mario, Mega Man, and Kirby games. Those games have lots of items to collect, power ups to find, secret paths to explore, and a lot of stages require coming back too. Bare Knuckle II and its hacks do not have anything like that. You cannot revisit a stage, you do not have secret areas to find. However, there are a few things that keeps the depth rating from being a zero. A lot of weapons can be used in this game. Often times the weapons are hidden under objects. The most common weapons are a pipe, sword, knife, and ninja weapons. Also some of the stages are long which requires time to complete. This is a game that will take a while to beat. I give the depth a 4 out of 10. I mean its not like other games I mentioned so it does not deserve anything higher than a 5. On the other hand there are some things going on here such as the stage length that keeps it from being a zero. So 4 out of 10 sounds about right.

Difficulty 7

The difficulty in this game was hard for me to rate. Compared to other Bare Knuckle hacks this one was not the most difficult. On the other hand this game did have some tricky points. The main thing is like the other Bare Knuckle hacks as well as the original game is enemies. Enemies just love to gang up on you. A lot of times enemies will jump down from the roofs, come out of of the ground, hit you from behind, and often attack in numbers. In addition, some of the bosses in this game can be a pain to beat. Those reasons are the right reasons on why the game is difficult.

However, the flash can move really fast so you can clear out enemies in a hurry and rapidly advance in this game. But, as I mentioned earlier in this review the Flash's speed can work against you at the same time mainly due to the controls. The Flash can really move in this game and the controls can be hard to handle at times. It is so easy to just need to advance slightly only to go farther and get suckered punched by an enemy. Another thing that happened to me while playing this game is I ran right into the boss and got surrounded. I just moved the control pad just a little bit and ended up going to the boss battle. The bad thing was all the enemies followed me. So I had to deal with the boss and like 10 other enemies at the same time. Yeah that was a difficult situation. So that can happen a lot on this game. Also the game does try to help you out as well. Weapons can easily be found the sword and pipe are the best weapons. As those two can allow long range attacks giving you the change to knock out enemies if your surrounded. In addition extra lives are common in this game. So if you need a 1-up you can easily find one.

I give the difficulty a 7 out of 10. The enemies and bosses drive the difficulty up. But what also adds to the difficulty is the controls. On the other hand the game does a lot to help you out. So yeah, I think 7 out of 10 sounds about right in this game.

Overall 8.3

When I first saw this game and that the Flash was the main fighter in this game. I was intrigued by it because I thought it would add something new and different. I have played a lot of the other Bare Knuckle II hacks such as Robo-Cop, Knuckles,  and Mega Man. So I was interested on what this version would be like. I must say this game does offer something new and different. The game does have some good things going for it but unlike the other hacks and original game. This game does have some issues.

I really like the idea of bringing in a Justice League character in this game. I would love to see that done more. I hope the makers will use other Justice league characters. I mean the Justice league fits well in this game since they are crime fighters. I also like the idea that this game offers something new. It is so easy to forget your playing a Bare Knuckle II hack. It gives the impression you are playing a different game. I also like how the sound was left unchanged in this game. Moreover, the stage graphics that made the original game a huge hit was left unchanged in this game. The difficulty is about right for this type of game.

Now, this game does have a few issues. While the plot is very good I would have liked to have seen how the Bare Knuckle Team contacted the Flash. That could have been explored more. The main issue with this game is the very fast controls. I have covered why the controls are an issue enough in this review. I understand that the Flash has Sonic the Hedgehog Speed and that is his main power. I also get why the maker made the Flash very fast in this game. However, the controls just got lost somewhere. I think it would have been better if they made his moves faster than the other characters. While I said the difficulty is about right in this game. Some of that difficulty comes from fighting the controls.

Overall I give the game an 8.3. I had fun playing this game and despite the issues this game is one that you should try. To be honest some gamers may not even bee bothered by the issues in this game. Would I recommend this game? Yes I would recommend this game. But, I think this game due to the controls should be played by people who has played these type of games. Due to the issues this game may not be one you want to introduce somebody to Bare Knuckle to. I recommend playing the original Streets of Rage 2 (Bare Knuckle II) game before playing this one for beginners. Overall, I think despite the few issues this is a solid game overall.

Happy gaming and Blessings in Christ. I hope you take time to play this game and give it a try.

when i first saw this, i tohught it would've been like the DC heroes SoR2 hack (just sprite swaps) BUT this was insane, not only does flash replace axel, but his speed was incorperated into the game really well. i had a blast playing this :)
