Puzzle games are games that are sometimes often overlooked. However, some have become well known such as Dr. Mario, Tetris, and Puzzle League. Sega got into the puzzle game with Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. I will be comparing this game to other puzzle games. 

Story 7 

The happy Beans of Beanville are generally happy and jolly. They enjoy music and good times. Beanville boarders Dr. Robotnki's own city of Mobius. The mad doctor hates the music, fun, and jolly. So he invents a machine that will turn the beans into robots in his own words to do his dirty work. He sends out his Batnik army to collect the beans and challenge Has Bean to a puzzle match.  The player controls Has Bean as the goal is to beat the batniks to free the beans. Defeating Robotnik, is the only way to return the robot beans back to normal and destroy the mean bean machine. Can you save the beans and destroy the doctors plans or will the doctor get his way? 

Okay, puzzle games are not known for their plots. But this one has a decent plot. Having Dr. Robotnik invent a machine to ride the happy jolly beans is creative. When I first played this I thought for sure Sonic would appear but he is not even referenced. But giving the plot Sonic being brought in was not needed.  So 7 out of 10 sounds about right. 

Graphics and Controls 9 

The graphics in this game are very good. The colors of the beans and backgrounds were nicely done. I also like how the Batniks are their original colors.  The fortress reminds me of a Mega Man game. In addition, the sprites are nicely done. I really like the animation of the batniks and Has Bean. Not one time does the game lag either 

The controls are very nice  and seem to run smooth. I would argue the controls are on par with Dr. Mario. Sometimes puzzle games do not have the best control. Not one time do the controls appear to slow down, lock up or change speeds. Thus, I give the graphics and controls a solid 9 out of 10. 

Sound: 9 

The soundtrack in this game is amazing. If you are not careful it is so easy to get lost in the music and lose focus. I really like the music in this game. Unlike other puzzle games like Tetris or Puzzle League this one has a diverse soundtrack. After beating a few bosses the music changes. I really like that as it keeps one from getting tired of the same soundtrack over and over gain. I also like the sound the beans make when you get 4 of a matching color touching.  At the end of the day I give the sound a solid 9 out of 10. 

Replay Value: 8 

I had fun playing Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. It is a fun puzzle game to play. Of all the puzzle games I have played this one is one of the top ones. It offers something different. This is a game that you will want to play again and again no matter how many times you play it. I found this game to be very addicting.  I give it an 8 out of 10. 

Depth: 5 

Well if the game suffers in anyway it would be due to the lack of depth. On the other hand puzzle games are not known for their depth. Unlike Sonic, Mario, and Mega Man games there are no secrets to find. This game has no secret rooms, no secret items, and the stages are not long. However, unlike other puzzle games there is some depth here. The game gives you the option of adjusting the difficulty. I think that counts as some depth because you can play the game through with a different difficulty. There are also sub games to play as well. Giving the option of difficulty and sub games I think that should count for something. Therefore, I give the depth a middle rating of 5. 

Difficulty: 8 

Okay the game has an easy, normal, and hard difficulty. For general purposes I will be rating the difficulty on the default mode which is normal.Despite this being a puzzle game there is some difficulty here. This game requires you to develop strategies, reflexes, quick acting, creativity, and problem solving skills. I love games that offer challenges like that. As you advance the game gets harder and quicker. So your going to have to adjust. I did not start having problems until the 8th stage. 

It should be noted that it can be easy to lose in this game. The bosses if they match beans more than you are get a chain reaction you will get black beans dumped on you. Black beans block you and can fill up your bean jar quickly. Some bosses seem to enjoy attacking with combos Basically how you beat one boss may not work on the next.  I found the difficulty surprising when I first played this. Puzzle games I have played like Dr. Mario, and the Puzzle League series they do have some difficulty in them but you can go pretty far before that starts to become a factor. In this game you have to adjust on every boss. If you are too picky or get too greedy you will lose. So, I give the difficulty an 8 out of 10.

It was kind of funny how I started to play this game. On facebook I saw a post that said remember and it had this game on it. I remember playing this game in the mid 1990's. A lot of stores would have games out so people could play them. I remember playing this one a few times. But after seeing the remember post on facebook it made me think. I need to play this game. So I did and I enjoyed it. But I also found out some things about this game that I didn't know about when it first game out. 

The first being this game is basically an American version of the Japanese game Pyro Pyro. In Pyro the player has to match 4 beans of the same color in a row or get 4 beans of the same color touching each other. In the Japanese game the player has to go through 13 different characters to win. Sega took the characters and changed them into Dr. Eggman's (Robotnik's) badniks. Also they changed the plot to fit Dr. Eggman. I really like how they did that even if it is basically an American version of the Japanese game. 

Now, before I get into the negatives I will talk about the positives. I must say this is one of the better puzzle games I have played. The graphics are amazing, the sound is amazing, the replay value is high and the difficulty is right for this type of game. This game is so addicting due to the reasons I mentioned that you will easily find yourself playing again and again. I also like the plot as I mentioned. Having Dr. Robotnik try to rid the beans by turning them into his minions is something that Dr. Robotnik would do. In the Sonic video games and comics Dr.Robotnik would try to conquer the forest to use it for his own use. He would also try to imprison sonic and his friends. 

Now for the negatives. I was really hoping Sonic would make a reference or an appearence in here. When I first played this game when I was younger my first thought was okay sonic is going to be the liberator and save the day. He is not mentioned at all. Now under the plot I said sonic was not needed and he wasn't. However, it kind of feels funny that Sega did not put him in here. Like they could have put him at the end celebrating with the beans on their victory. Second, the game does have some features in it that makes you think sega could have been trying to rival Dr. Mario in this game. In Dr. Mario the player has to get 4 colors in a row  to advance. That is the idea in this game. Also there was one soundtrack that sounded similar to one in Dr. Mario. 

Anyway the negatives in this game are very minor and nothing to sweat over. Even if Sega did copy they made an awesome game here. This is a game that is fun for all ages from the young to the old. Also its a family friendly game so if you have young children this is a game you could let them play. I really had fun playing this game its a good game. So would I recommend this game yes I would recommend this game. I give the overall rating a very solid 9 out of 10.

My first review ever was “Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine”. A quirky little puzzle game based of off “puyo puyo” and released for the Sega Genesis in 1993 and for the Sega Game Gear a year later. I looked at the Game Gear one for my first review. But in this review, I will be looking at the Genesis version of the game. So, this is my review of “Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine” for the Sega Genesis. Story (6): The story gets a 6, mostly because it makes no sense. Eggman somehow got into puyo puyo, and Plans to turn the beans into robots with his robot machine. You, the random faceless character you were destined to be, must go through all 12 of Eggman’s robot’s to eventually reach Eggman himself and save the beans of puyo puyo! Graphics (9): The graphics looks some time was put into them. They’re very colorful, and have very good framerate. Also, no sprite flickering. (at least not from my experience with the game.) However, graphics don’t matter a lot in a puzzle game IMO. So they JUST miss out on a 10. Sound (9): The soundtrack for the game misses out on a 10 as well for not having a lot of tracks. But for what they’re worth, the tracks to this game are joyful to listen too! (And they have a lot more than the game gear port, while the game gear has about 3-4 tracks, the genesis version has about half-to-a-full dozen.) Depth (4): You thought mega man 4 had no depth? Well this game makes mega man 4 look like mega man……skyrim. (bad joke, lol) You go through 13 rounds of puyo puyo matches, and that’s it! There IS multiplayer and exercise mode, but that’s about the whole cartridge. But, once again, since depth doesn’t mean much in a puzzle game, I’ll go ahead and give it a 4. Difficulty (6): The game isn’t really brutal if you’re good, but if you aren’t, the last few A.I. battles will test your sanity. You might have a HUGE combo coming up, but a refugee bean comes down in the wrong place, and it blocks your combo, forcing you to work around it. But the refugee beans never work when YOU need them too. It can drive you to insanity. Also, with each match you win, the speed that the beans fall at increases. To the point that the beans become nothing but blurs. Meanwhile, the A.I. is just nonchalantly placing beans. Addictiveness (5): I wouldn’t consider this a very addicting game. It can be, but normally, don’t count on it. Main reason why I don’t find it addicting is because of what I said in the depth section of this review. (Go through 13 battles and win them all, that’s it.) Overall (8.9): Like I said in the first part of this review, this is a very quirky puzzle game. Doesn’t make it bad however. It just makes it a game that you should only play when you have a puzzle game craving, as this is a true blue puzzle game. I give this game an 8.9 out of 10. If you love puzzle games and Sonic the hedgehog, then give this game a go. You can find it the game gear port on the Nintendo E-Shop for a measly $2.99. Who knows? You may like it! This item is a home version of the arcade machine Puyo Puyo, which was conceived by Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) for their own home console. The game idea was acquired completely, and even the graphic design remains the same. It was packed in a nice story about the vile Dr. Robotnik (the villain from Sonic the Hedgehog). The home planet of Dr. Robotnik, planet Mobius is the setting of the gaming scene. The spiritual Dr. Robotnik has once again made a new invention. With this invention, the bean transformer which is able to transform the funny and lively beans from Beanville mini robot, he hopes to banish the fun and the music of his planet. For this reason, he sends out his robot to catch the beans and cram in a container. At this point the player is now, which has the honourable task to save the beans by it helps them to escape from the tanks. It achieved only when it brings together four beans of the same color. Then can they out locks are namely mysteriously from the tanks. Playfully, it looks like this, that the beans from the top down in groups of three in different colour combinations in your collection containers which occupies half of the pitch, fall off and any shot. You should be always working in one fell swoop now so many beans as possible, because this one injects the opponent who plays in the other tanks at once many black beans. These can then easily be taken and you leak more opponents of these, the own odds are higher. It is too slow so you have to fight soon with umpteen black beans because the opponent leaves nothing untried fill you with black beans. Should the containers are then filled to the brim, you lost the game. To overcome this not at all easy, you need a rapid response, forward thinking, and you should be able to understand the entire playing field. Stamina it should not lack but also the players, because the individual levels can drag immensely in the length. Only if you have these skills, you will succeed also all robots that are Dr. Robotnik to the page and even Dr. Robotnik himself to defeat and thwart his nasty plans. And even constantly highest concentration is required for the degree of difficulty of the game is pretty high. It is very easily of victory against the first robot it is increasingly difficult to win with every next. The beans are then faster and faster in the tanks, and also each of the robots with its special tactics to work that is always nastier the further you go to thwart your efforts goes. When Dr. Robotnik beans finally almost like raindrops fall so that each smallest error can mean already wide. So you can start not always from scratch there is, fortunately, a password which you can write down but for every level. All in all is Dr. Robotnik ´s mean bean machine can be completed over evenings and is a very fun and entertaining game. The story mode is very motivating because when you embark on this fun beans rescue operation you get the chance to defeat the Evil Dr. Robotnik once and for all. There is also a fantastic two player mode, having a two player mode is always a great feature in a game, such as this and extends its lifetime limitlessly Ultimately what really stands out above all is the nice background music, something that tends to lack in the arcade templates and I personally find enchanting.

This game features the villian "Dr robotnik" trying to stop the fun and jolliness of beanville for all eternity. In this game, you control a pair of beans descending down the field by pressing left or right on the d-pad to move the beans left to right, and hold down to make the beans fall atleast 15 times faster than normal depending on the speed. That is simple, right? No, you press buttons A, B, or C to rotate beans either counter-clockwise, or clockwise (controls can be edited in the options menu before you start your quest to save beanville). The music of this game is well composed for a 16-bit system, there are lots of SFX and BGM when you need them, however, there isn't a sound test. :( The sounds are great, too. ;) In the quest to save beanville, you need to fight through 12 robots with your bean saving skills in order to fight robotnik himself, but it isn't that easy, the AI of the CPUs are programmed a certain way, such as, "clumsy", "smart", etc. If you manage to fill up the third column of the opponent's field, you will win the battle and you will get a password to write down and you can fight the next enemy. However, if your 3rd column gets fill up, the dungeon collapses and you will have to continue by pressing start in 10 seconds, if you hit start during the countdown, you can continue right where you left off. Not pressing start during the countdown brings you to the high scores, then to the title screen sequence. Thanks to the password system in North America, the game is a lot easier to play and you'll play more often than before, like I said, there is 12 stages before you fight robotnik in the 13th and last stage. Overall, this game is just perfect for your library, it has great sounds, gameplay, etc. The game is easier than the original version of puyo puyo. The story is the most important part of the game, you are the hero, trying to save beanville and the world before robotnik puts a end into fun and music. If you actually own a cartridge of this game, you're lucky nowadays! This game is also featured on the 12-in-1 game, "Sonic Mega Collection", "Sonic Mega Collection +", and "Sonic Gems Collection". Buy any of those 3 game packed discs, they are the best compilation of classic games ever! :D
