a Classic I don't care much for classgame
sigh *drinks from imaginary flask* it has to come to this sadly, reviewing a game I didn't like playing
Gameplay and Story: It's the classic video game plot, girlfriend gets kidnapped, all because the leader of this gang wants to Lee brothers knowledge of Martial arts (seriously is that it?), so Billy and Jimmy do some fighting (but if you play together in some cases you have to fight over the girl and the winner gets the girl....in real life she would be horrified over this and wouldn't go with either sibling) brother defeats leader and he and the girfriend live happily ever after....until Double Dragon II the Revenge
Graphics: Yes everything is a slight improvement from the NES version but it's a coin-op game of course everything is going to be an improvement here, hell those big muscly dude that are taller than the person you are playing as actually look more human than like monsters (though did one of them have to look like the hulk?)
Soundtrack: it's just okay but I feel I heard part of it somewhere else before like for a CBC related thing that retro winnipeg did but it probably just sounds similar
Addictive: I played it as much as I could when I was ten but after the NES stopped working not so much, probably because a year later we got the Genesis (and no Double Dragon was not among the games we had with it) I didn't get to play the game again until I discovered emulators
Depth: There are 4 missions in this (yeah I guess the arcades want to make these as quickly as possible so others can play...at least that's what I think
Difficulty: I gotta tell you, the controls were the worst part of the game, I probably had more patience when we had the NES version in the house (yeah we had an NES briefly because I guess my aunt gave it up when the nest became empty) actually I don't remember who gave it to us or where my dad got it from. Why is it that I had more patience when playing video games than I do now?
Post Review Follow up: I get that this is considered a classic and one of the first side scrolling beat em ups but I didn't really care for this title, maybe if the controls were better and I could feel the blows more easily I would feel something for this but I don't I don't wish to hurt my fingers doing all this I shouldn't have to mash the game pad...or my keyboard. However I will give this one props, Double Dragon walked so that Streets of Rage could run
This Concludes my review and this is my last review of the tour, see you in January....however the reviews may be limited because I still gotta work, I don't know when I return to work after Christmas but I will have some reviews pre-written though to save me some time because writing reviews this time around took quite a bit of time and energy (if the song ratings didn't)

Double Dragon Oldschool777
Overall=9
This is one of the games that was a mainstay in any arcade. The music drew you to it,you knew the music when you heard it. You are Billy Lee,out to rescue your girlfriend from the Shadow Warriors,a bunch of scumbags that need an old fashioned beat down. The controls were simple but offered a lot of depth. You could throw simple punches,jump kick and of course the deadly elbow strike. You did have slowdown when a few sprites were onscreen,but it is forgivable,this was 80's tech after all.
Graphics=9
The graphics were good and sprites were pretty huge and detailed. The motions were smooth and well done. The game would slow down when a few were on screen but that was a minor nitpick. At times that slowdown was helpful. The characters looked distinct from each other and it was pleasing to the eyes.
Sound=9
The sound was a treat from the opening hook,to your girl being punched in the gut,to you making your own law,the music just made want to fight. The effects were good and you would cringe a bit when a knife found its mark in your chest.
Addictiveness=9
The action was tight,the gameplay simple and direct and the game basically mapped out what a good side scrolling beat 'em up should be,a butt whopping good time. Plus the game has received new life in the form of Double Dragon Neon,a homage to a great game.
Story=5
The story is simple. Bad guys took your girl and you need to smash some heads in to get her back. You did not need a complex tale to enjoy the game,just walk to the right and kick some tail.
Depth=5
The game is simple,just beat the snot out of the bad guys,but the controls were a little stiff and took getting used to,but once you learned the moves,you would often play with an enemy just to see what else the Lees can do.
Difficulty=8
The game starts rather easy and starts to go into a bit of platforming which the game is not the best at,but was serviceable. The enemies start to multiply and ratchets up the slowdown and once bosses were beaten,they became common enemies to beat later. The bosses are a challenge and the slowdown can hurt or help you. You even had palette swaps of yourself as an enemy and they had access to your fighting style. If you want to kick it,'80's style,grab your quarters,a coke,and kick some butt and rescue Marian!
