Donkey Kong Land - Perfect for Your DK Needs.... On the Go!
Ahh, this is a game I haven't played in years! I still remember the first time I got to borrow Donkey Kong Land from a kid on the bus and I spent hours playing it. I never beat it, but I still had a ton of fun. If I remember correctly, this was actually the first Donkey Kong game I played besides the arcade classic. It surprises me with the amount of people that don't know what this game is. I was just browsing through vizzed and I thought of this game and I figured I might as well review it while I'm still in the mood. Read on as I review Donkey Kong Land, a faithful look-alike of Donkey Kong Country.

Graphics-9- The graphics are, in a nutshell, Donkey Kong Country's graphics re-done to work with the Gameboy's extremely limited color palette. Despite the lower resolution of the Gameboy, Donkey Kong Land still delivers the pre-rendered graphics and it looks darn near the SNES games. If you've been paying attention, you'll notice that I find these graphics to be very appealing - and they are! I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this is one of the best looking original Gameboy games out there (Of the ones that I have played.). The only complaint I have is that some of the enemies have a darker palette and it causes them to blend into the background in some levels and possibly cause an unintended death for the player.

Sound-8- The sound in this game is a wonderfully done port of most of the songs in Donkey Kong Country. You've got the secret area theme, the Congo Jungle theme, and more. It all sounds great in 8-bit! I personally really like the secret area theme in Donkey Kong Land. It almost sounds as if it were destined for the Gameboy's sound hardware.

Addictiveness-7- Um.... this is a Donkey Kong game. Name a Donkey Kong game that isn't addictive? Even Konga and Jungle Beat are addictive games! This game is no exception. It's got that fast pace that the Donkey Kong Country games are known for, and the action is simply sublime. This game is great on the go as it provides the same experience that you get at home playing Donkey Kong Country.

Story- It's the same deal as with Donkey Kong Country; you are trying to beat all the levels and bosses so you can beat King K. Rool so you can get your bananas back and have "Fun, fun, fun til your daddy takes the T-Bird away". This game doesn't require a story; the real charm lies within the gameplay. Moving on.

Depth-6- I was going to rate this as a "4" but then I remembered that the game actually does have some decent replay value. You have the regular levels to run through, but then you can also go back and pick up any K.O.N.G. letters scattered about the levels that you may have missed. I don't personally try to get the K.O.N.G letters unless I can get them in one smooth run through the level as this isn't a game that I typically try to replay the levels in until I 100% every part. The K.O.N.G. letters are mainly more significant to completionists.

Difficulty-6- The game starts out at a relatively smooth and steady pace but by the time you reach the second world the difficulty increase starts to intensify. It's just like the Country games, which are known for their very high difficulty. When I was younger I remember I spent hours trying to beat the Ship world because it was so hard for me. The game would definitely be a hair-puller for some people.

To sum it all up, the game is basically a handheld port of Donkey Kong Country. It's an awesome platformer complete with great controls, fun gameplay and a killer soundtrack. Returning to this game after so many years I realize it is just as fun as it was when I last played it. I recommend this game to any Donkey Kong fan that hasn't played it and I also recommend it to anyone looking for some fast-paced platformer action that you can take with you wherever you go. Donkey Kong Land gets a 9.3 out of 10 from me. Peace.

In a modifiication of Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong teams up with his buddy Diddy for new adventures and gorilla antics. Facing high-flying pigs, killer bees, and reptilian Kremlings, the simian duo swings back into action on the Game Boy. The two Kongs each have similar abilities when compared to the SNES game. This game isn't exactly a remake of DKC; for instance, there are new levels and enemies, and Candy Kong does not save your game: instead you must collect all four Kong letters.
