Dino City Featured Review

Dino City Review by: supersonic44 - 7.5/10

Dino City, why aren't you remembered?
This game needs to be played.  I'm sorry, If you haven't played this game, play it now.  It is, in my opinion, a great game.  I'm not that only one that thinks this too.  Many game review sites gave it favorable reviews.  Not only that, Internet reviewer JonTron thinks highly of it, and "rather likes it."  But, what makes this game good?

Story:
The story this game offers is nothing new or great.  Upon entering their dads lab, Jamie and Timmy find a Science device.  They touch it, and enter a Dino city, and they need to get back home.  See what I mean?  The story isn't revolutionary, but it has a nice family friendly feel.  (On a different note, right before the title comes up, a screen with so text comes up saying "Timmy entered the TV world after he touched his dad's science device."  Am I the only one that thinks this is hilarious?)

Graphics:
This game's graphics are VERY nice.  Backgrounds change from day to night, the animations are nice, and the game gets really creative at times.  The ice level is a real standout.  Not only that, but the enemies are kinda creative.  What other game has an enemy where you jump on it and it springs you back up and it doesn't die?  And that enemy be called Trampo?  As a minor complaint, the kids shown at the end look nothing like their in-game sprites.  Also, there is the occasional typo.  A small complaint, but it's worth taking off points for.

Sound:
This game has some nice music to it.  Tops theme is a standout to me in this category to.  Unfortunately, as nice as the music is, you aren't going to be humming it on your way to work.  Again, the music is nice.  But, it doesn't hold a candle to other games on the system, like FF III.  The games actual sounds are forgettable.  The life-up noise, the death song, and the enemy kill noise are all stocked and cliche.  The music is nice though.

Depth:
Believe it or not, this game has something more than just being a platformer.  You can choose your own adventure!  Kinda.  At the end of each level, there are two doors.  A red door and a yellow door.  The red door is harder to get to, but leads to you to a bonus stage.  Kinda like Super Mario Land.  This really increases replayability in ways that many other SNES games do.  Not only that, but the game can get quite hard.  For a game marketed toward kids, I'm surprised that the game is so difficult.  If I played this as a kid, I would've rage quit mid-way in.  There are infinite continues though, so that's nice.

Interesting thing:
This is a movie tie-in.  Don't believe me?  Look up adventures in Dino-City on IMDb.  It's a piece of crap movie though, and a rare case where the game is better then the movie.

Overall:
This is a nice game.  It gives you that nice family-friendly feel, sorta like a Mario game.  Is it perfect?  No.  But it's a fun way to spend an afternoon.
