Diddy Kong Racing: Review Balloon   Fireproof
Diddy Kong Racing brings me back to the good old days when I was told by my mom to take the trash out and I saw a shooting star for the first and only time in my life. Standing there in front of the dumpster I wished for the new Diddy Kong Racing game that just came out. Shortly afterwards, my wish was granted and as a child I sucked at this game so bad but it was well worth it. Diddy Kong Racing is the Rare version of Mario Kart Racing consisting of Rare characters like Diddy, Conker and Banjo. The game offers a cool competitive counterpart to the Mario Kart game with an actual world you can explore and different race tracks you can venture to. If believe that Mario Kart was the only real good racing game of it's time, you are sorely mistaken. Diddy Kong Racing opened a new door to racing with an exciting racing environment unlike the Mario Kart series.
Graphics: 9
Eye-catching is probably one of the best words to describe this game's graphics. Each race track was detailed and offered variety. As you raced each track the scenery would change as you progressed back to the start line. Personally, I liked that the race tracks were, for the most part, big but they also offered cool changes in scenery and it felt more like a world instead of a racetrack. To add to this, each level felt new and unique which really helps to keep your interest up in the game. There's also a cool world you can roam around in that you could explore that took you to all the different race tracks of the main game.
Comparing to Mario Kart 64 I'd have to say that I prefer the race track designs and scenery of Diddy Kong Racing over Mario Kart simply due to Mario Kart's limited designs. Mario Kart's levels never really offered anything different as you progressed except that a few race tracks offered some change, however, Diddy Kong's race tracks offered quite a bit of difference between most tracks. In Mario Kart, Rainbow Road just felt like it would drag out forever but there aren't any real scenic changes as you raced around your lap. I also felt that the items in Diddy Kong Racing seemed more detailed.
Sound: 10
In this game I really enjoyed the music. I found that each race track song fit perfectly into the race track and it really helped get you into the game. The sounds and music was something that helped bring you to the edge of your seat while fighting your way to first place. Who wouldn't like something that grabs your attention and pulls you in? If I were to compare this to Mario Kart 64, I'd have a really tough time deciding which I liked better. Mario Kart also offered many cool songs that helped bring you to the edge of your seat. These 2 games really stack up to each other in this category. I also enjoy the fact that the boss songs added a level of excitement that Mario Kart did not have so there was something more to look forward to in Diddy Kong Racing.
Addictiveness: 10
Can you play for only a few minutes? I wasn't able to. There were times I'd find myself on the game for hours without a break even if I'm stuck playing the same course repeatedly trying to come in first place. The game is just addictive and to a new player you might find yourself checking the time after 5 minutes and see that 3 hours has passed. This was how my world was back in my younger days. The addictive aspect also pulls you in with having the ability to play as a Plane, Hovercraft or Kart. It's cool that you can play the same tracks using different vehicles. This was something that was done way before Mario Kart did.
Other aspects of the game also pull you in. You can battle friends with the game's battle mode or you can play a race. Playing this against friends increases the competition and makes it even more fun. I've always liked playing with friends or using a multilayer aspect because it's much more difficult to play other people than it is to play NPC. The cool aspect is that the game offers plenty to do and see which makes the game a lot of fun. You can't go wrong with a game like this.
I can also see this game being a great choice for a Vizzed competition. You're able to race and compete against other players with the multiplayer feature as well as there being time for the time trial game. I think this could be a lot of fun and get people into playing this game more. I don't think too many people see the value in this game especially since everyone is used to playing Mario Kart.
Story: 6
Surprisingly, there is a little bit of a story for this game. The cool thing about this game's story has you venturing to the different worlds to compete in each of the races. When you've raced in each door of the world you're able to fight the boss. Eventually, you're able to able to fight the Evil Wizpig who is trying to take over Timber Land. The cool thing about this is that you don't expect a story from most racing games because there usually aren't any. Compared to Mario Kart, there is no story there.
Depth: 8
Diddy Kong Racing offers a lot for players to explore and unlock. With all the features in Diddy Kong Racing you will stay entertained and have tons of things to do.
1. Many scenic tracks that lay the main foundation of the racing game, These offer cool designs, extra routes, cool items and some are playable with different vehicles.
2. There are 3 different vehicles you are able to play as.. airplane, car or hovercraft. Hovercraft are the only vehicle you can use on the water tracks but you can usually play as airplane or cars on most other tracks. This is pretty cool and it's not offered by any other games.
3. Different colored balloons offer different items to be used in your racing. Green will give you traps. Blue will boost your speed. Red allows you to fire rockets and the rainbow balloon allows you to create magnets. Much different from randomized item drop from Mario Kart.
4. You will encounter different bosses as you play the game. This is also unique and stands out from the Mario Kart game.
5. You're able to unlock other playable characters which wasn't available in Mario Kart until the Game Cube release.
6. Multiplayer mode allows you to race friends and family
Difficulty: 8
To someone who is first starting out you may be overwhelmed by the A.I. in certain areas of the game. It's not necessarily easy to play but once you've practiced and earned some experience under your belt, the game becomes increasingly easier to play. Some bosses offer you a good challenge and winning isn't always going to happen. You may be faced with trying the same track or boss many times. On top of that you're going to lose against the final boss several times before you finally figure out a strategy to defeat him. You're also going to need to get used to the different balloons, especially if you're someone who was always used to Mario. Balloons give you items but they aren't randomized like they are in Mario Kart. You will need to be a little more selective with what you choose and how you use what you have, otherwise you may fall behind.
Overall: 10
Overall, I enjoy the game. I like the game's graphics and I think they did a really great job when working on them. Tracks are somewhat scenic and provide a good sense of variety. The game's music is nothing less than good. There is a great sense of the track taken into consideration when applying music and sounds. I like that it helps pull you in a bit, especially when fighting the bosses. The game is absolutely addictive, at least for someone who has never played it. You will definitely strive to finish the game. There's a cool little story behind the wheel of the game. It gives the game a sense of purpose and adventure on top of the racing.
When it comes to the depth, there's many things you can do. This helps in maintaining the addiction if you're playing. Nothing is too repetitive except for maybe losing on the more difficult tracks. To some the degree the game is a little difficult and it will take some getting used to with the game's controls. You have to learn to operate the car, hovercraft and airplane which all 3 have a different feel to each. Each track also adds to this so some difficulty will take time to get some experience under your belt.
If you play Diddy Kong racing, it's worth it. Compared to the Mario Kart it isn't as popular but I think it's just as good if not better than Mario Kart of the N64. There were several things included in this game that helps make Diddy Kong Racing stand out but unfortunately there isn't many games of the series either. I think that if Rare had kept a game like this going they could have competed with the Mario Kart series head to head. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I'd give Diddy Kong Racing a 10 because it's worth it.

"Hello there! This is for you"   WorldsBoss
Well now, where can I begin with what can only be described as the best gaming experience of my childhood? This was a game that was forever living in the shadow of the much loved Mario Kart franchise, so many people may take one sweeping glance and think "oh, it's just another karting game with various items to give you an advantage over other racers" however I can assure you there is much more to this game than meets the eye.
While I admit it may sound like just another cheap Mario Kart knockoff, this could not be further from the truth! To highlight just a few features present in this game that trump other games in its genre; the presence of a story mode is a very welcome addition to the karting mix, and while the story is not all that in-depth, it is still something that sets it aside and really allows this game to shine. It is also important to remember that, as with Mario games, this was originally targeted towards a younger audience so the story had to be fairly easy to follow. Next is the ability to play in one of three unique vehicles; an aeroplane, a hovercraft, or a normal kart. As far as I am aware, Diddy Kong Racing is the only karting game available to this day to have such an option! It isn't just a gimmick either, the vehicle you select (changeable by talking to an NPC in the main hub, but restricted to certain worlds) actively changes the style of play, so it is down to the player to decide which vehicle is best suited for which racetrack in order to get the best time. Yet another feature present in this game is a passwords section, making the races a lot more customisable. If the CPUs are too easy for you, then there is a password to make them harder, so this game can literally provide dozens of hours of extra playtime even after the credits roll.
If you've always been the type of person who avoids karting games due to the rather luck-based nature of the item selection process, then Diddy Kong Racing might just be the game to get you back into the swing of things. Items in this game are obtained from different coloured balloons, and each colour corresponds to a fixed item (for example a red balloon will always give you a rocket to shoot at other players) which removes the element of chance, but still provides the proverbial glue to keep the game entertaining. The power-up function keeps strategy to the items though, for example if you collect 3 blue balloons you will get a super powered up turbo boost which will be much more effective than the use of three non powered-up boosts used separately.
Graphics:
I have given this section a 9/10 because, at the time of it's release in 1997, these graphics were truly cutting edge. A lot of effort has clearly been invested into adding nice little details to impress players, and given the fact that it is a Nintendo 64 game I think it has stood up to the test of time reasonably well.
Sound:
Probably the greatest game soundtrack I can think of, even to this day I still find myself humming along to some of the tunes from this game from time to time. It is just so catchy and just about every song can really engage you in the racing environment and spur you on towards that coveted golden balloon! It just had to be a perfect score of 10/10 here.
Addictiveness:
As I mentioned previously, this game has a HUGE amount of additional content with which to stay very occupied for many hours. I would say that all of these features make it a very addictive game if, like me, you are a big fan of karting games. From boss battles to time trials, this game has it all, so once again it gets a perfect score of 10/10
Story:
Being generous and giving it a 6/10 here. While the story itself isn't exactly mind-boggling, I have to give Rare credit for actually providing us with a story to follow here. It does make the world of difference.
Depth:
This category only gets a 9/10, simply because the only place I can fault it is the simplicity of the story itself. However, as stated previously, this game had a target audience of children under 10 so I really shouldn't be too critical of that. Besides, when I first got my hands on this game at around 7 years old I had no complaints about the story, so it's all retrospective I suppose.
Difficulty:
This one was a little hard to put a figure to because to be honest the game can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be. There are options available to make it harder if you're up for a challenge, but equally it can be made easier if you're struggling (both via the passwords system from the main menu). Of course if I was rating the game's difficulty without any of this password business, I recently played through the whole game again and it wasn't until fairly late in the game that I really started to struggle, so the game gets a 5/10 from me here.
Overall:
I can't rate this game highly enough! If you have never played Diddy Kong Racing before then I urge you to give it a try. It was even recently re-released on the Nintendo DS due its immense N64 popularity, so surely it's worth checking out!

amazing n64 racer   evilcon09
hello all you lovey space cats welcome to my review on diddy Kong racing on the n64 this is arguably the best racing game on the n64. this game got a remake on the ds but some of the characters are replaced with some donkey Kong characters due to some of the characters are owned by rare which got bought by Microsoft (blame them for screwing up some your best games if rare made them)
the story for the game is: timber Tigers mum and dad are away on Holiday while timber is left to guard the island he invites his friends to keep him company and having fun till the evil Wizpig shows up and tires to take over the island so it up to timer and his friends to stop him
the game play is a kart racing like but you can not only drive a kart but a boat and a plane too. it also has some mini games like the egg stealing from 3 other players and a boss race. you can pick a track with either the car boat or plane  but not on every course those. the boss races is more of a point a to point b race. the bosses are hard to beat but wait till you get to wizpig he will make mince meat out you if you screw up just once  on his races. one thing i forgot to say is the power ups where the player hits the same balloon color while holding the item can be powered up 2 time ranging from max boost to 10 missiles
the good bits  of the game: giving players an a choice to pick between a car plane or a boat. fun courses to race in. power ups can be stacked up. the music is amazing, cheats are plentiful
what i didn't like about the game is the bosses they feel way harder than they should (don't get me wrong i love a hard boss but they feel harder than usual boss battles) also no sequel cause of bloody Microsoft sorry about that
Overall its a very awesome game check it out thanks for reading the review and hope to hear from you cats soon

Legendary!! N64 Game   austinmccrea123
Diddy Kong Racing !!
I chose to do this review today because it's such a legend.
Anyone that owned a Nintendo 64 should have owned this game.
I honestly cannot think of anything bad about it, even if I tried.
As usual I will give my personal opinion about the game and then break down my ratings.
Keep in mind that my opinion may differ from yours, other then that happy reading.
Dude, this game has so much to explore and so many challenges / ways to have fun it still blows my mind.
I know most people say Mario Kart was the bomb but Diddy Kong Racing was the nuke!! ( if that makes sense ) .
Everyone I knew as a kid had this game. It's full of amazing characters, levels, and with so many ways to play it
makes itself an instant classic. " Cars, Planes, and Boats OH MY ! "  Over all I gave this a 9.9 Rating.
I would have given it a 10 but c'mon, there is no such thing as a perfect game. Although this one comes really close.
Graphics: 10

Talk about visually appealing, Diddy Kong racing is incredibly well done.  Major props the the designers and animators.
For a Nintendo 64 game, Diddy Kong Racing set an amazing standard for graphic quality. I would even argue that its
graphics are better then Mario Kart, but that's just my opinion.  Textures such as water, sand, and snow are really nice.
its just a very colorful and imaginative game all around.
Sound: 10

The sound quality is just as good. With every character having multiple noises for certain reactions.
The sounds of the environment are on point. The vehicle noises are also really pleasing to my ears.
OH! And who can forget the awesome music. This game is filled with so many great tracks its just crazy.
Addictiveness: 9
I could easily play this for weeks with a couple friends and never get bored. This game has a ton of levels to race on.
Plus the battle mode is really well done. Hell, even the story mode played in single player is fantastic.
I wish they could make a second one for the present day consoles. Nintendo Switch maybe?
Story: 9
The story totally fits the game style. Collecting points from competing in races until you have enough to do the boss for that area.
The boss races are pretty great too, they gradually get hard with each one you complete, and the all have different settings from each other.
I don't want to throw spoilers in here so I can't elaborate to much about the fine details.
Depth: 9
The variety of options makes this game what it is really. With multiple vehicles to choose from Diddy Kong racing brought a whole new aspect to racing games for the console. Single player story is really fun.  Multiplayer races and battles keep the experience really fresh
I would recommend this game to anyone !
Difficulty: 8

Now, personally I didn't find the game to be super hard. In fact, I don't think it's supposed to be. It's challenging that's for sure but not mind numbingly difficult or anything along those lines. When I was a kid it was much harder to beat the story. As an adult it's a cake walk for me
but a fun cake walk none the less. It's just a really good balance.  I wouldn't change a thing.
Well this concludes my review for Diddy Kong Racing. A big thank you to all those who took the time to read this.
Any comments are appreciated, as long as they aren't too harsh. NOW GO TRY IT OUT!!

Classic   Turtle96
I played this game when it came out when I was just a kid. Still love playing it at 19. You pick a character to start your quest to defeat an evil pig by winning many races in different worlds on the island. There are even some mini games. Just when you think you beat the game by beating the boss and spending so much time on this hard journey, you are tasked with going to a whole other place of races. IN SPACE. So now its like a part 2 to the game where the difficulty is much harder than before and you win races in order to get to the boss which is harder than before. The entire experience is great. The graphics might not appeal to alot of people but that doesnt matter. It was a gem of its time in my opinion and you should definitely check it out. The story may be a little plain but no big deal, enjoy!
