Castlevania: Circle of the Moon Review   cooldragon1990
Unlike Aria of Sorrow and Harmony of Dissonance I never really played this game on the actual console itself. I did play a little bit of the emulated version off of Vizzed a long time ago, but for the most part, my playthrough and time with this game was blind. I played it last and boy was it an experience. I didn't make the mistake of saying it's not as good as the others (even though that technically is true) cause I did play it last, coming from the much simpler games on the Gameboy Advance. This wasn't a bad game and it was quite fun despite being a little harder.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Graphics: This has slightly compressed graphics. It isn't as polished or smooth as Aria of Sorrow but areas are quite bleak and atmospheric. Since this is the first Castlevania for GBA (if one doesn't count the GBA port of the original game) so they probably didn't get some things right. I can still tell what things are and it still looks good.
Sounds: This has in my opinion the best soundtrack of the portable games. I personally like the Machine Tower song this game has. It's an annoying area and this version of the Clock Tower levels that Castlevania is known for, and I like a few other tunes.
Addictiveness: This game was quite a challenge compared to the others, but I wanted to play further. I personally stuck through with it, but it is different. If you play it last like I did, it could be very jarring. Despite this, I stuck through with it, and it was very addictive. I just had to collect every last Card in the DSS system (more on that later) and fill out my map just like I did in the others. It will be a while till I play the game again (at least from the beginning) but I will try some of the other modes that unlock once beating the game.
Story: Having played this game last, I can compare this game slightly to Harmony of Dissonance. I don't know if Harmony of Dissonance has any relation to this or it was intentional, but it has a similar plot. A trio of Hunters go to a castle with a friend that acts progressively jerkish as time goes on. The Master/leader is captured (Lydie was captured and held hostage in Dissonance) and Nathan must do his thing to save the world from Dracula. It even has a similar twist with said friend. It's the standard Castlevania plotline.
Depth: This game offers quite a bit of things to do. It is quite long (I went purposefully out of my way to collect and grind for things. This clearly slowed down my progress) and offers a decent length campaign.
Difficulty: Here we go, I won't lie this is the hardest of the GBA trilogy of games. Everything except Abilities and Subweapons you get from other enemies, in other words, drops. You grind for items, armor and cards. In terms of being Castlevania, it is the closest in modern terms to the original game. Enemies send Nathan back a few feet if hit and like to edge guard. This is a term from Super Smash Bros, that I penned here, cause some nasty enemy placements on edges hit you if your aren't careful. There aren't any pits for instant death, but it can be very annoying to make your way back up.
As there is no shop, you have to be a lot more careful with getting hit and can't Superman your way through enemies as much. If you are opposed to grinding, I hope you are good at dodging enemies. You get everything from drops. I would easily say that the early portions of this game are the hardest. To make up for this, some enemies give you cards for the DSS system. These are the games magic spells or perks that make your game easier. These can be stat boosts, summons, or elemnental protection. The best summon arguably is the Lightning Bird Summon. This makes most of the bosses a joke (including the final boss) but the catch is summons and one other attack uses a button combo and in the thick of things it can be stressful to pull off.
This is one of the few GB Castlevania games that I know of that has a bonus area. The Battle Arena is similar to the Pit of 100 Trials from Paper Mario Thousand Year Door (only 17 rooms instead of 100) which throw harder versions of enemies at you, leading up to a tough fight for arguably the best armor in the game. It's just as hard as the Pit, with some easy rooms and some mean rooms.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Final Thoughts: Just because a game is hard, doesn't make it a bad game. It would be nice to progress in games, but just cause it gives you a challenge shouldn't make you avoid it. This game is clearly the hardest modern Metroidvania game and should be played before the other games. (Unless you're a rebel like I am)
I enjoyed it, but there were some moments that gave me trouble. I had barely any good healing items mostly focusing on defense and luck as I would rather take a lot of hits then dish out high damage. This might not be how you play the game. With a good soundtrack (the best in the portable GBA trilogy) and a nostalgic throwback to the original game, this game should be played.
Remember, my one bit of advice to you is that challenging or difficult games doesn't make a bad game. If you aren't progressing in the game, then maybe figure out a different strategy. If you are playing emulator and don't mind resorting to save states or rewinds then you can always rely on those.
I give this a 9.7.
I am simply way too generous for my own good. I rarely rate games low. Just think of this as a fun Castlevania game.

Castlevania Circle of the Moon Review   XxEzraxX
The Castlevania series has put out quite a few good games and this one is no exception. I loved this title, the game play is great and the story is decent. Although I wish they didn't use Dracula because of the whole Bram Stoker book and the films kind of overrating him, but I can't really complain because the game was really good. Trying to explain what kind of game this is, well is kind of difficult because it is kind of a mixture of a side scrolling beat 'em up, plat former, action and rpg game. However, I have always thought of it as an rpg.
I rated the game overall a 9.9 I loved it and I had it through my teenage years, I have no idea where it is now but I had a great time playing the game. It is definitely a game that is worth praise, and I don't think many people even know of this titles existence which is a shame really. I remember when I first started this game, I was blown away by how dark it was. At the time I was still in the days where gameboy games consisted of things like Mario and Pokémon etc. You know things that appeal to children. Then I popped this game in and was swept away to different place, a much more darker place.
The graphics of this game of the game are great so I rated them an 8, I would have given them a 9 or a 10 if the background was more interactive I guess you could say. I just found some of the backgrounds a little boring, but they looked really good nonetheless. The sound was interesting, I rated it a 6 because as interesting as it was nothing really stuck out to me and hearing the main character making those noises when he jumps got on my nerves after a while. There were however a few rooms that I had encountered that had an awesome song to it and often found it stuck in my head.
The addictiveness of this game I rated an 8, I loved it and didn't want to put it down..until I got my hands on the next Pokémon game that is. I do however think that if there were no other games to distract me I would play this title all the time. I had a wonderful time when I first played it and still do whenever I pick it back up. The story I had to give a 7, because in my opinion it was kind of generic. As said before your enemy is Dracula, who has been reborn by a cult and by a cult I mean a strange woman. He kidnaps your master and now you and your rival must traverse through Dracula's castle and find him, however your rival is not to thrilled with you being in the castle so whenever he sees you, he is always telling you to leave. And you must stop Dracula before the full moon appears or he'll sacrifice your master and take over the world. The castle is filled with enemy's though, so getting to him will not be easy.
When it comes to the depth I rated this game a 9, the map is huge especially for a gameboy advance game. I was amazed at how much of rooms I had discovered when I started and how big it was. There are a few secret rooms to, however they are not as secret as you may think. Once you started uncovering rooms on your map you will see the secret rooms and can easily get to them and find out what is inside. The difficulty I rated a 7, the game can be challenging when it comes to trying to get to a new place or room or when fighting bosses. But other than that the game is not that hard, especially if you have experience with beat 'em up games.
Circle of the moon is a great game, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes the darker side of games, or vampires and I mean real vampires. There is no team Edward here. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this review and will stick around and read my next one whenever it will show, till next review.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon Review   Supergamer

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon Review

Graphics

Much like Symphony of the Night, Circle of the Moon gives players the chance to explore some nice looking areas in the castle. Each area is uniquely designed from each other, so players shouldn't’t feel like the areas are repeating each other. The color palette and environmental detail gives each area of the castle their own spirit. Unfortunately, there are a few areas that are reminiscent of those from Symphony of the Night. The Abyssal Stairway is reminiscent of Outer Wall; the Eternal Corridor is reminiscent of the hallway room of the Marble Gallery, and Triumph Hallway is reminiscent of Castle Entrance. But, the castle itself sin’t just what makes up the art of the series, it’s also the monsters. Unfortunately, though the monster were not as carefully designed and detailed as the environments they live in. Certain classes of enemies are merely palette swaps, which include but limited to: elemental demons, elemental armors, demonesses, were-beasts, and beast demons. Using palette swaps to create “new” monsters in any game is a decision that save developers time, but also detracts a player’s feeling that each new enemy that they encounter is unique from the last. But, it is not just the use of palette swaps that take away from that feeling, but also very design of the monsters themselves. The design of each monster in Circle of the Moon is designed after stereotypical designs of monsters from folklore, literature, and cinema (i.e. Witches look like the witch from the Wizard of Oz).  This is unfortunate as the designs of many monsters in the series are designed uniquely from their sources.

Sound

The sound effects of many attacks by both Nathan and Dracula’s dark forces are fairly good, but with the lesser hardware capabilities of the Gameboy Advanced make those sounds a little worse than those from home consoles or PC. However, the music is almost as well done as it was in the previous entries. Much of the music sounding like it could be done or was done on an electronic keyboard. While these electronic sounds could never sound as good and clear as real instruments, it doesn’t mean that the ambient music of this game is not good. The sound track of each area gives each one of them a certain feeling or theme to them (the sound track for the beginning area sounds like Nathan is starting an intense journey). These soundtracks help create the game’s excellent atmosphere, which is something that the franchise has been doing since the beginning.

Gameplay

Items

Circle of the Moon offers the same gameplay style that was offered by Symphony of the Night; players explore the castle while killing monsters to level their character and collecting items. However, despite having the RPG elements that were popularized by Symphony of the Night, Circle of the Moon plays a little similar to the classic series. Nathan moves a fairly slow pace while his jump height isn’t very impressive, but this can resolved once players acquire the relics for sprinting and double jumping. Also similar to the classic series, candles drop either hearts or a sub-weapon not money. Because there is no money players cannot stock up on items by buying them from a vendor, instead they must kill enemies until they dropped the desired item. While this can make the game a little bit more challenging it also makes stocking up items an annoyance, as players will have to kill the same enemy repeatedly until they drop an item. However, this requires elongated time of killing enemies and exiting and reentering a room to respawn the enemies to repeat the whole process over again. Items, despite the tiring method of getting them, are staple feature of the game that is required to survive within Dracula’s Castle. There are two classes of items that can be dropped from enemies: usable items and equipment. Usable items are used to heal, recover hearts, recover magic, and cure any current ailments. Equipment, which is separated into Body, Cape, Hand, and Accessory, increases or decreases Nathan’s attributes depending the item equipped. Equipping armor and stocking up on items will help players survive.

Stats

As mentioned before, usable items are be used to recover health, hearts, magic, and from ailments. Health determines how long Nathan can stay alive, hearts determine the numbers of uses for sub-weapons, and magic determines how much he can use the card system. However, recovery from ailments is very important, as ignoring them will result in Nathan’s potential death. Poison will drain Nathan’s health over a short duration, Curse drains Nathan’s magic, and Petrify will prevent Nathan from moving. Also mentioned before was that equipment increase or decrease Nathan’s attributes, which are strength, defense, intelligence, and luck. Strength determines the amount of damage that can be dealt, defense determines the amount of damage that can received, intelligence determines the recovery speed of magic, and luck determines the drop rate of items. Increasing all of their attributes with careful equipment choose will help Nathan when facing off against Dracula’s minions.

Combat

Combat is fairly similar to how it was in the classic series, with classic sub-weapons such as dagger, holy water, axe, stopwatch, and cross returning. However, there are a couple things inherited from Symphony of the Night that are featured in this game: elements and magic. Circle of the Moon has extended the element system a little by adding a few more elements, and making each enemy have their own elemental resistances. The elements featured in Circle of the Moon are: Fire, Ice, Plant, Earth, Stone, Poison, Wind, Thunder, Holy, and Darkness. Each enemy will have resistances and weaknesses to these different elements, and figuring what element to use against what enemy is an important part of combat. However, Nathan can only use the elements through the dual-setup system or DSS. DSS is a card system that will vastly improve Nathan’s combat capabilities depending on the card combination, and the cards can only be received via item drop. These Cards are split into two categories: Attribute and Action. Attribute cards are cards that determine the special effect of a combination, and are represented by legendary creatures corresponding to the ten elements. Action cards are cards that determine base effect of a combination, and are represented by roman deities that give their own effect in combination with an attribute card. These combinations range from changing Nathan’s weapon, summons, defensive spells, offensive spells, and stat boosts.  Now, while the different card combinations can be extremely useful, certain card combinations lose their luster after players find better cards. However, having certain card combination lose their luster isn’t the only issue with DSS, as DSS can also make the game far less challenging. Even, the most challenging bosses of the game can be beat easily with DSS.  But, there is a special area of the castle that will remove the DSS completely. This area is the hardest challenge in the entire game, and it is the only to get the best items.

Story

Circle of the Moon’s story is standard Castlevania fair: Dracula is back, Kill him. This story is tiring, even for long time fans of the franchise. However, much like Symphony of the Night and Dracula’s Curse, the Circle of the Moon gives a larger cast of characters other than the vampire hunter and Dracula. However, unlike those games though, the supporting cast is poorly used, as they are only encountered in the beginning and towards the end. And like Maria in Symphony of the Night, there is one character that Nathan encounters, but unlike Maria these encounters are not very endearing. Another similarity to Symphony of the Night is that there is a boss that has dialogue, but they are utterly unimportant to the game’s storyline. The story ends the same way as pretty much every other castlevania; the cast on the good side watch on a nearby cliff as Dracula’s castle collapses.

Conclusion

Circle of the Moon is a good castlevania that will remind veteran series players of the classic games, due to Nathan’s slow pace. The dual setup system along with the equipment system and the vast exploration makes the game feel more vibrant. However, the dual setup system can significantly decrease the difficult of the game, especially in late game. Bosses are kind of challenging, but only the earlier bosses are fairly challenging since players will not have access to many DSS cards at that point. The bestiary is also a little flawed because many of the monsters are just palette swaps, and they can be easily devastated by late game DSS. Circle of the Moon is a good game, whose main feature takes away from the challenge of the game.

One of my favorite classic games.   jacosmoot
-Overall-
The overall rating for this game, I gave it a 9 because its the one game I will always go and play when I feel like I need to play it. It's a great game and its really unique with what it has to offer compared to other castlevania games due to the DSS card system and the really neat RPG system. The DSS system is when you can use the power of various deities in pairs of 2 to empower your whip and change what your whip or character can do, like the first combo you get, it makes your whip flame and deal extra fire damage, there are 18 DSS cards to collect with each different effects when combined together, it makes it worth collecting them all due to the really cool effects some have when you use them, like the unicorn card, when you combine this card with any other card it allows you to summon a monster that attacks based on what you used with it as a pair.
-Graphics-
The graphics are decent for a game of its generation, it is a castlevania game so the graphics that look like this are what give this game its charm to me. Who doesn't like retro graphics like this? But seriously, I really enjoy these graphics and how they look, I think any other sane person that's a castlevania fan can agree with me on this one. I have no complaints to be honest.
-Sound-
You can say that the sounds are great for a game of this generation because when you compare it to other games I think the sounds of this game are quite nice compared to others of this generation. The music is great too, completely worth listening too on all levels, each area has a nice little bit of background music to go with the stage.
-Addictiveness-
I have to rate this high because I can't ever seem to get enough out of this game. I always find myself playing it again. It's really one of those games everyone should play at some time or another. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys games like this one. Just going around whipping monsters to death never gets old.
-Story-
This story like most castlevania games have the same story of just getting to the end of the castle to defeat dracula, etc... This one though has a bit different of a story if you wanna pay attention to it.
-Depth-
The depth is typical for your castlevania games, its got secrets, and the armor and items you can collect, along with the max hp/mp increases hidden around the castle. It also has the DSS cards you can collect as well. So a bit of collecting for everyone.
-Difficulty-
The difficulty is as well typical for these games its easy at the beginning but its difficulty increases really quickly with each area getting harder, the first boss is easy and is predictable but then afterwards the bosses get increasingly harder and harder. With each boss as well having their own element and DSS combo they are weak to.

Castlevania Circle of the Moon   WolfMain460
                                                                                    (LOTS OF SPOILERS AHEAD)
It's 2001 and the greatest minds at Konami were plotting to make a new Castlevania game. One of the best ones they could. They had already lost so much when the 64 Castlevania games bombed. So after months of developing a new Castlevania game. So on March 21st in Japan and on June 8th in America they decided to release, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon.
In this new addition to the already amazing franchise that is Castlevania, the year is 1830. Within the rusted and cracked walls of an ancient Austrian castle, Worshipers of Chaos had attempted to revive the one and only, Dracula. However, from a number of sources, Morris Baldwin had heard of the Resurrection of Dracula. Morris comes from the Baldwin family, which happens to be together with the Belmont Family. So with Vampire Killer blood souring through Morris' veins and body, Morris heads to Castlevania with his two apprentices, his son Hugh Baldwin, and Nathan Greeves. As soon as Dawn was now dusk, the trio found the Castle where the Resurrection currently awaits. The trio rapidly advances into the castle, however, it was too late. A minion of Dracula known only as Camilla, had already started the ritual. In order for Dracula to regain his former power, he would need to wait until the full moon ritual was completed. Before the trio could fight Dracula and reseal him, Dracula broke the floor that Nathan and Hugh were currently on, causing them to plummet down an extraordinarily large hole, leaving Morris alone with Dracula and Camilla. Suprisingly, Nathan and Hugh survived the fall. Hugh ran off to save his father after telling Nathan to leave the castle. Nathan, also wanting to find his master, did not leave the castle, and instead, decided to go and look for his master. Along the long journey Nathan has chosen, he duels with many of Dracula's minions including, the soul stealer Death himself, Fallen angles. And his own personal minion,Camilla.
After conquering Camilla, Nathan learned that Hugh was possessed by Dracula. Dracula was able to exploit Nathan's most hidden desire, his desire to become more powerful than Nathan. He wanted to prove that he was superior to Nathan so his Father would bestow the Hunter Whip named Vampire Killer to him instead of Nathan. When Nathan defeated Hugh, Hugh accepts the fact that Nathan is superior, and comes back to his senses. Hugh being upset at himself for his selfish desires. Hugh tells Nathan to Look for Dracula. Nathan arrives at the ceremonial room to vanquish Dracula and save his master from being a sacrifice in the ritual. After what seems like Dracula succumbing to being defeated he shouts" I need my full power", and he disappears to his homeland, Right before Nathan was going to chase after Dracula, Hugh freed his father and said to Nathan, "Please Vanquish Dracula and rid the demon from this world once and for all! Something I am not able to do. As Hugh carries his Father's body out of the castle, Nathan chases after Dracula, where he sees Dracula's Ultimate Form. After a long, drawn-out, intense battle, Nathan succeeds in Vanquishing Dracula's ultimate form. Before he was sealed, Dracula stated "It is a wasted effort. I will never be truly gone. So long as there is darkness and desire in the soul of man, I will continue to be revived". Nathan replied, "And we will be there to stop you, you foul Monster". Dracula is defeated and the castle is destroyed, Nathan then leaves to continue his training with his master Morris, and his good friend Nathan.
If that amazing story didn't make you interested then gameplay will. The gameplay in Circle of the Moon is in the type of a Metroid-Vania type of game, in which the player must explore a gigantic castle filled with undead enemies in a non-linear fashion. All enemies defeated can sometimes drop useful items and equipment, and also give Nathan Experience points which increase Nathan's power. Bosses  provide plot progression, and their defeat allows Nathan to usually get equipped with a new ability which will then allow him to explore more of the castle. Normally in a Castlevania game a crystallized orb would appear after a boss fight, however in this game, none of those will appear. - 0.1 of score. One of the best things about this game is the DSS ability. In which certain monsters will drop DSS cards that Nathan can pick up and fuse to get a special ability. Some of the abilities include, Whip elements, attribute buffs, and familiars. These can help Nathan by doing all sorts of things, more damage, range, abilities, act.
The music is another amazing thing about this already fantastic game. From the second you start playing, until you've already beaten it, all the tunes you listen to throughout your playthough are some of the most amazing video game songs on the whole Gameboy Advanced music library. They've brought back some classic songs, and made some new ones. Sometimes while you play, you'll just want to stop playing and take a listen. However, my only complaint is that they didn't have Bloody tears in the game. -0.1 of score

99990 attack power

1) Equip items with a combined strength penalty that is equal to or greater than your strength. While the game will indicate that you have 1 strength, actually having 1 strength is not enough to activate this glitch.
2) Activate the DSS card combo of your choice. Doesn\\\'t matter what it is - any DSS card combo will activate the glitch.

Once both conditions are met, attack power will instantly be raised to 99990 while both conditions hold true. While the game says that attack power is 9999, spinning the whip, which normally does 1/10th as much damage as striking with it, will also do 9999 damage when it hits, as if attack power was 99990 or higher. Unfortunately, actually using this glitch is basically impossible, due to the first requirement. The maximum attack power that you can have and still perform this trick is 210 (2 bear rings + dark armor), and, by the time you get these items, attack power will probably be far higher. Still, if you can pull it off, it\\\'s quite useful

OMG. My game data got deleted which is very very terrible bcuz I had Sage Robe, all cards, Shinning Armor and Potion Exes and all other cool stuff. I don't feel like starting all over again.

Roc Wing and skip it. Or you can try and freeze them to get the power ups early. To do that I usually just keep loading states to get their pattern down quicker. Could wait it out, but... why?

This game isn't all that hard! Its the freaken Brain Platform things where you have to freeze them to jump higher, usually for a power up. Those parts of the game make it hard.
