Breakout - Breakaway IV Review by: tornadocam - 7.4/10

Take a break
Time to take a break from it all and Breakout, nah just kidding. I am though going to be reviewing one of the earlier video games made. I will be reviewing Breakout a game made by Atari. I later learned this game came out in the late 1970's. Just a few years before I was born, which was in the 80's. Okay onto the review.

Plot: 2
Breakout being a puzzle game does not have a story to it. Breakout does not future saving the world from an evil scientists such as Mega Man games. One does not have to rescue anybody like they do in the Mario games. The player in Breakout must hit a ball around to breakout of the level and advanced to the next level. Breakout is a puzzle game so it is not surprising there is not a plot. The goal of hitting the ball to breakout and advance counts for something. I give the plot a 2 out of 10 rating, because there is not much of a plot here.

Graphics and Controls: 8
Breakout being an Atari game and one of the earlier video games had amazing graphics. The colors of the walls the player must breakout of is very nice. The colors really jump out at you. I thought that was amazing for an early video game. The backgrounds are nicely done too they really fit the levels and colors quite nicely. I like games that have good backgrounds in them. The game also does not seem to lag at all. The graphics in this game were nicely done.

The controls for the most part were good. The controls are pretty basic no extra buttons or anything like that. However, the problem with the controls is sometimes they feel a little stiff and sluggish. It seems like when moving the tray to hit the ball with it just feels sluggish at times. On the other hand, I would expect there to be minor issues since this is after all an early video game. I would not expect the controls to be smooth like Mega Man and Mario games, which would come out in the 1980's. Still, the graphics and controls are very good so I give them a solid 8 out of 10 rating.

Sound: 6
The sound in this game was also nicely done. The sound the ball makes when it is hit is nicely done. The ball also makes a sound when it bounces off a wall too. It sounds like an actual ball being bounced or hit. The sound the game makes when you miss hitting the ball is also good. It is an irritating (in a good way) sound, it lets the player know they missed. While Breakout did have some good sound it could have had more. It would have been nice if the makers of this game included some music in the game. I like games that have good music, but maybe I just have become customized to Mega Man games. Other puzzle games I have played such as Bust a Move had relaxing music to them. The lack of other sounds kind of brings the rating down a bit. However, the sound this game has is very nicely done. At the end of the day I give the sound a good 6 out of 10 rating.

Replay Value (Addictiveness): 6
Breakout has special meaning to me, more on that later on in the review. Breakout is a fun puzzle game to play. It is so easy to keep playing this game to advance a level or see how far one can go in this game. When I played this game I would play it often. It may not look much but this game can be addictive. Now with that being said Breakout is not in the same league as Mega Man, Mario, or the Donkey Kong Country games. Those games had a lot going on in them that made them great and very addictive. Still, Breakout is a fun game to play and if you like puzzle games you will be addicted. I also find it nice to go back and play some of the vintage games so that also adds replay value to this game. I give the replay value a good 6 out of 10 rating

Depth: 3
Breakout really suffers from its lack of depth. Unlike Mega Man, Mario and Donkey Kong Country games. There are no stages to complete, no items to collect, no bonus levels to find, no extra missions in the game, and no enhancements to get. Also unlike other puzzle games such as Bust a Move there are no side games to chose from either. Breakout, just has levels that the player must breakout of to advance. The only thing the player gains is points and advancing. On the other hand, this is a very basic puzzle game so I was not expecting a lot of depth. But at the same time it would have been nice if it had some extra depth to it like Bust a Move does. In recent Bust a Move games such as Bust a Move 99 the player can chose different types of games. Examples, include two player mode, arcade version, endurance and other stuff. It would have been nice had Atari included a few extra styles to Breakout. I give the depth rating a 3 out of 10.

Difficulty: 7
The difficulty of Breakout may vary. If you are a person that is good at puzzle games than Breakout maybe a breeze. Otherwise, Breakout can be a difficult game. After beating a level the ball starts moving faster and the tray used to hit the ball will get smaller. That can be very difficult. Breakout will defiantly test your skills and reflexes. I will also argue that the game will require you to get creative. In the later levels in the game the player will have to get creative in bouncing the ball of the wall at a perfect angle. Breakout is a difficult game but it is not difficulty like other games. There are no long stages to complete or no enemies to worry about. I do not feel like I could give this game a higher rating than an 8 due to there being no enemies or long stages. Still, this game as I have stated is difficult. The difficulty comes from reflexes mostly. It is so easy to miss the ball and get game over. The difficulty in this game is a good type of difficulty as skills are required to advance.  Thus, I give Breakout a good difficulty rating of 7 out of 10.  I like games that challenge the players.

Overall: 7.4
Breakout has special meaning to me. This was the very first video game I played on the Atari. I can remember as young as 3 years old playing this game. I had a blast as I thought it was a fun game. It still is a fun video game to play even with today's games. Sometimes I like to take a break (no pun intended) from playing Mega Man or other games and play a vintage video game like this. I really enjoy trying to see how far I can go in this game. The game is difficult but it is the good kind of difficulty as it tests your skills. The graphics in this game are also nicely done considering it is one of the earlier video games.

Now, this game did have some issues. As I have stated Breakout is not in the same league as Mega Man, Mario or Donkey Kong Country games for obvious reasons. The controls while they are basic can be stiff and appear to be sluggish at times. I would expect that from an earlier video game but it can be an issue at times.  The sounds this game had were really good but it would have been nice had it had some more sound to it. The lack of depth is what I think really hurts Breakout. It would have been nice had there been more options. Breakout reminds me of another puzzle game called Bust a Move. In the Bust a Move games or at least the ones made after 1998. The player can chose different styles. It would have been nice had Breakout had that option as well.

If you are a fan of puzzle games than these issues probably will not bother you. In fact, the issues should not discourage anyone from trying this game. I played this game and enjoyed it. The difficulty is good as your skills will be tested. It is nice to go back and play some of the old vintage video games. The game does have its issues but it is still a good game. If you like games that challenge your skill, reflexes or if you are a fan of puzzle games than you should enjoy this game. If you are wanting to introduce a child to video games this would be a great game to introduce a child too. Also, if you grew up in the days of the Atari or just want to play Atari games than give this game a try. I would recommend this game. I give an overall rating of 7.4.
