Bonk's Adventure Review by: Singelli - 8/10

You had me at Dinosaur!
OVERALL RATING: 8/10

Everyone loves a good Mario- like game in which you travel, talk to dinosaurs, and save a princess, right?  Well in Bonk's Adventure, what you would expect of such a game is what you get!  Though I was at first unimpressed, it didn't take me long to fall in love with the little Charlie Brown caveman who literally uses his head.  Head butting enemies into obliteration, this little guy has got some major guts!

For those of you that don't know, the whole 'Bonk' idea originated in Japan as a comic with a completely different name.  The character was loved so much that people started wanting Bonk to be given his own game, and so Hudson Soft took up the challenge and the Bonk's series was born.  The first game was designed for the Turbo Grafx -16 and Bonk quickly became a sort of mascot for the system.  Since most people in the United States didn't own or even recognize a TG - 16, Bonk wasn't well known until he was introduced to other systems such as the Gameboy.

Just an interesting tidbit: in Japan's original version, power- ups changed Bonk into a cave
woman!  The gender transformation was not accepted in the United states however, so Bonk's power ups were edited to be more suitable for American children.

GRAPHICS (9/10):
For a game that lacks any color outside the black and white scale, I found the graphics to be quite astonishing!  Not only was every line crisp and clear, but nearly all the characters were downright adorable.  Bonk himself isn't the most handsome guy in the world; he's got an over- zealous cranium, he's bald, and he has teeth that allow him to scale cliffs and trees.  When he eats a piece of meat bared from a flower, he becomes so excited that he grows a little Mohawk and his pupils become insanely dilated. However, he's got a small bit of charm with his Charlie Brown eyes and cute little detail- less body.

That being said, it's the enemies that really drew me in.  The enemies which appear in the first few stages are bland and unrecognizable. I couldn't tell what they were and they weren't attractive at all, causing me to almost instantly lose interest in the game. However, after passing through the four stages and meeting the level's boss, I was hooked!  Facing off against our dear little Bonk was what appeared to be a triceratops tank!

From there, the enemies only got better.  There were cannons which spit out eggs that hatched into mini-dinosaurs.  There were carnivorous dinosaurs with monstrous muzzles, dancing cacti, and flying pterodactyls.   The plethora of bad guys never ended, and their crusade to stop little Bonk was quite amusing.  I really appreciated the wide array of enemy types, and at times they were simply amusing, (such as the googly eyed flower).

Interestingly enough, much of the character influence comes from modern technology and yet somehow the graphics are too impressive to make the enemies feel out of place.  Even a ballerina raptor meshed right in with the screen.  I could describe all my favorite sprites in detail, but that wouldn't leave much for you to enjoy, now would it?  Even though the game isn't very challenging, I would recommend the game simply because the graphics are wonderful and are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

Characters aside, the backgrounds were also just as impressive.  Each brick, cliff wall, and mud hut was detailed, crisp, and believable.  The artists even made sure to incorporate basic textures and shading to give the 2-D game a more popping visual.  I was not disappointed in the slightest, and I consistently had something to look at and enjoyed looking at it.

SOUND 8/10:
This is probably the second older game I've come across which also had impressive sound quality.  I didn't feel the need to mute this game once, and the only cranium swollen with annoyance was Bonk's.  That being said, I wouldn't rate it a perfect ten.  Many of the sounds were too reminiscent of Mario sound effects, and I would have appreciated ALL unique sounds.  Head butting bad guys only resulted in a small thud noise, flipping mid- air produced the same noise as Mario jumps do, and bouncing off of strange spongy material gave off no humorous effects.

However, the music -was- unique. I didn't really find it stunning or even all that interesting, but I'd rather have a dull track than a screechy one.  The quality of sound, for a Gameboy, was almost beyond it's time and given a few tweaks I could imagine it in a more modern system.  I simply didn't get excited by it and in fact I paid it absolutely no mind as I played the game.  I can't recall any of the tunes and I'm not even sure how many I heard because they are that forgettable.

As I said earlier though, I'd rather the music be forgettable, than annoying.  This, combined with the quality, are what motivated me to rate this category with an 8 out of 10.

ADDICTIVENESS (6/10):
This game really doesn't have much re- play value.  There are six levels which take about an hour to complete, so starting the game over would mean that each map is fresh on your mind and game play would be extremely redundant.  The game is easy enough, though, that if you lose all your lives, it's not a big issue to start over from the beginning and work your way to the place you died.  Therefore, it was quite easy for me to keep my motivation to finish the game, which is why my rating is a on the higher end.  The game kept me hooked long enough to play through it once even if I died at the second to last level.

On the flip side of the coin,  I wouldn't play the game any time soon even though it's not a huge time waster.  I would replay it in the future when I can't re- call the sprites... just to see them again.  (Yes, I loved the little characters that much.)

However, why re- play a game just to see the cute characters, when I could likely look them up with Google?  Bonk has enough fans that I'm sure some research would uncover a few posters, or I could make one on my own.

*thinks on it for a bit*

Nah, that's too much work.  I'd gladly replay in the future to get some screen shots of the adorable little dudes.  Then I won't need to play it ever again unless I just want to reminisce.  With that though, I've lowered my rating a bit: 6/10.  I can see how the game gathered so many fans, but it simply isn't worth playing more than twice.

STORY (4/10):
There really is not much to the story at all.  In the original Bonk plots from Japan, Bonk is trying to defeat Evil King Drool, an angry dinosaur/ dragon that has capture the Moonland princess and brainwashed Bonk's friends.  As far as my memory (and research)) serves, there seems to be no drive to the King's trickery, other than a desire to cause trouble.  The name isn't all that creative, the story doesn't have much depth, and in the Gameboy re- make, Bonk's friends don't even make an appearance. Unless you read a manual or have the box, you aren't even aware of the fact that Bonk has set out to save a princess until you meet her at the end of the game.  With such adorable graphics, it's  shame the writer's didn't put any effort into creating a unique and equally adorable plot.  I mean, how many games out there have a 'save the princess from the dragon' plot?

The story does get a few kudos for the fact that the princess is from half a moon, and for incorporating advanced technology into a prehistoric world.   The mixture is flawless and smooth while being just credible enough to be entertaining.  I mean, who doesn't like seeing a prehistoric shark submarine?

DEPTH (2/10):
There's not much to this game at all.  As I've stated above, the story lacks details, there are only six levels, and the game can be completed within an hour.  Probably the worst feature of the game, however, is the fighting system.  The fact that there is basically only one type of attack isn't so bad as the fact that defeating enemies has -virtually- no purpose.  When you kill a bad guy, you receive points, but those points do absolutely nothing for you.  Their only purpose is to perhaps have bragging rights if you're into that sort of thing.  You don't get extra lives with the points, you don't purchase items from the points.... you get no type of bonus for them whatsoever.  In fact, if I died in a later level, I simply ran through the levels and dodged all the enemies without giving them a second glance.

NOTHING is required to pass a stage except to.... make it from point A to point B.  The only battle which is necessary is that of each boss, and the boss is the only reason you'd want to collect -something- during the stages.  What do you want to collect?  Lives.  Lives are the only thing worth looking for in each stage.  Everything else is completely pointless.  What a huge bummer.

DIFFICULTY (3/10):
Look, if I can beat a game within an hour, the game is designed for three year olds.  This game was.... EASY.  I guess the good side to an easy game is that you seldom get frustrated, but at the same time I do prefer some bit of challenge.  The most challenging part of this game was discovering how to beat the enemies, because most enemies can only be attacked in one location of their body.  If you touch any other part of their body, you take damage.

One of the levels was disappointing enough to have no boss, and then before you fight The Evil King himself, you have to defeat all four bosses a second time.  In fact, this is what the fifth level consists of: battling each boss one at a time.  However, since you have already discovered their weakness, there's absolutely no challenge to this.

On top of everything, power ups are as common as the enemies.  Literally as soon as your current power up times out, you run into another one.  There's no scarcity to these at all, and so it's very easy to lose the excitement that comes with finding a meat- baring flower. (Power ups develop when Bonk eats a piece of meat that pops out of a flower.)  Also, the power ups double your strength and allow you to attack all enemies on the screen by head- diving into the ground.  You don't have to approach the enemies... they simply must be on the screen.

Also, there are only three types of bonus rounds which can be found in small Mario- like flowers.  One bonus round has you scale a wall as fast as you can, one has you jump from platform to platform gathering vegetables as long as you can, and one has you jump of a pillar and flip as many times as you can before landing on the ground.  These bonus rounds are infrequent and not at all challenging.  Besides, since points are completely... pointless, there really isn't any allure to these rounds.

The only thing I -did- find difficult was using little bouncy clouds to travel through the stages.  I'm not sure what's wrong with me, but I simply could not navigate with them.  I couldn't seem to control which way or how far Bonk would bounce, and I never discovered how to.  I suppose it doesn't matter much however, since you can get through the whole game without using them. I imagine they are either red herrings, or they lead to small bonuses which get you more pointless points.

Other than that, the controls were pretty smooth and don't offer very many frustrations.  Reactions to controls is quick and seamless.

Overall, despite the fact that the game was not challenging, I did love the game.  It's a classic, it's adorable, and I don't regret the hour I spent on it.  It isn't often I enjoy and non- challenging game, but this one definitely takes the cake.
