Baritron's Body Harvest Review   Baritron
Baritron’s Review of Body Harvest for Nintendo 64.

Before you read this, it should be noted that it is my first review, so it would be helpful to receive constructive criticism so I can continue to make better game reviews in the future.

Graphics: 8/10 The graphics in this game were absolutely stunning when it first came out in 1998 and they have aged rather well. These graphics are definitely on par with such titles as Legend of Zelda The Ocarina Of Time and Perfect Dark. Also, I am going to be cutting this game some slack because it is a vintage video game and it deserves to be reviewed as such. Aside from some blurry textures on floors and some vehicles, the graphics in body harvest still hold up today. The character models were very well designed for their day and they also still hold up. Everything is very clearly visually expressed.

Music: 9/10 The overworld music in this game is very well suited to create a desolate and dangerous atmosphere to perfectly immerse the player in Body Harvest and make them feel like they’re not alone. Entering a house or building provides the player with music that makes them feel safe, but still cautious. I am going to take a point off for lack of variety as this game’s soundtrack is almost all dark and depressing music. If you're looking for something cheery and upbeat, Body Harvest is not the game for you.

Story 8/10 This game has an amazing story for an old game. It follows the protagonist, Adam Drake trying to prevent an Alien attack that is sent to harvest the human population every 25 years. To stop this Alien invasion, you must travel to four years in a 100 year period. The locations of the game are Greece in World War 1, Java in the 1940s, the New York City in the 1960s, Siberia in the 1990s, and the year 2016. One of the problems I have with the story is that while it is original, it is somewhat generic, being another story about aliens invading, and you’re the almighty hero that must stop them. This story does work for the game and it is used to create a very well rounded plot.

Gameplay / Control 9/10 The gameplay in this game is really amazing for it’s time. For one, it’s one of the few games in the Nintendo 64’s library that utilizes the C buttons correctly. Also, because it was published by DMA design, (better known as Rockstar in later days) it shows many similarities to games in the Grand Theft Auto series.1; it has 5 open world levels that the player can explore freely. 2; the use of vehicles is a key aspect in the game, giving the player protection from Aliens and providing increased mobility. If a large enough amount of civilians are dead within a level, the Aliens will destroy the area and the level will have to be restarted. One of the best aspects of Body Harvest are harvester waves, which are a very large group of Aliens that can kill civilians even if the player isn't present. You must react quickly to harvester waves as arriving late to one can be catastrophic to your progress. This creates a sense of urgency that few games are able to replicate very well. One of the only problems I have with the gameplay is that you can only save once you have completed a part of a level, meaning that if you die on that part’s boss battle, you have to start all the way at the previous part, and if you’re on the first part, the beginning of that level. Another problem I have with gameplay is water. You slowly drown when you become submerged water and in most cases, water is very hard to escape. Basically if you get stuck in water, you're screwed. But If you can overlook these two flaws, Body Harvest will be very addicting game that will keep you coming back for more.

Depth 7/10 As I have said before, Body Harvest is a nonlinear game, as the player is free to explore the open worlds to his or her desire. There are also many vehicles that the player is able to drive around the map as well as a well sized arsenal of weapons. However, aside from progressing in the story and exploring the map, there’s not a whole lot to do in Body Harvest which is why it is receiving a 7.0/10 in this category.

Difficulty 6/10 Body Harvest overall, is not a very hard game. The difficulty definitely increases as you progress in the game, but the difficulty is always well paced and easy to adapt to. Most of the difficulty for me was trying to find out what to do in a certain situation, as some things can be rather cryptic. Other difficulty increases include an increase in the map sizes of the different levels, and larger, tougher enemies.

Overall: Despite its few flaws, Body Harvest is still an incredibly well designed game and definitely one of the best games for the Nintendo 64. My overall score for Body Harvest is an 8.8/10.

ZeegSerpentine's Review   ZeegSerpentine
Howdy to all my gamers and if you are reading this, then yes, it is true and it is not a illusion. I, ZeegSerpentine, am doing a review, and this game just so happens to be the second game I have reviewed so far. So lets get down to it, okay?
Graphics: The games graphics, for a N64, is no doubt a all time awesome. In my own eyes I saw that with every kill and with every explosion, it looked just that. Well, of course, to an extent. I mean everything looked cool and all, buildings, alien bug things, and so on was cool, but their attacks and such, sorry, but if the creators of this game can do good on the surroundings, so can they on the attacks. So I gave this game for graphics a 8 out of 10
Sound: The sounds quality was actually good in my eyes, but in a way of speaking, the battle themes just wasn't real creative you know? I mean, if you face one thing, a couple battles down the road, you hear the SAME SONG. But I'm not really hating on the sound at all. But in all honesty, I really have a grudge with how there is no talking people in the game. Having texts for what the person says is good and all, but the only audio for voices I've heard is the bugs, people screaming, and the final boss. Sorry, but if your going to give the bugs sounds, be a cool dude and at least give someone that's human have speech. So I think that this game has a 8 out of ten as well.
Addictiveness: Okay lets face the facts of this game real quick. It doesn't matter how you look at this, the game as a whole is no doubt addicting. When I first played this when I was a kid, I was hooked. Now that I've grown up, and even though this site won't let me play it, its still a great game in my own eyes. And when you think about it, if you had the cheats for this game, which I have noticed someone has posted cheats, it makes the game, well, a lot more fun to play. Am I right? So lets see...based on how hooked I am on it, and how it actually has stayed as such, I give this an easy 9 out of 10.
Story: Honestly, when you think about it, the game itself has a great story line. I mean, your a dude sent from the future to destroy the bugs, and redo the whole future? I mean come on lets face facts, that's perfection on the get go right there. I can't really review on this topic honestly, but I give this a perfect 10 out of 10.
Depth: This game gets confusing after a while, but when you get the hang of it, its a great game to play, and it takes alot to think about how to survive, how to defeat the bosses, and which rides in the game will provide better terrain and such. An example I can use in this is when your in java, and you have to actually find pieces to a sword to stop the storm. Its hard to, which requires more thinking. No only that, you have to actually scale the whole place just to win the level. But lets face it, when you have to, at times, take on the same bugs over and over again, it gets a bit tiresome. So in my eyes, this game in depth, deserves a 9 out of 10.
Difficulty: This is a game that gets harder and harder as it progresses. Its no doubt a game that challenges the mind in the aspect of puzzle and strategy, plus you may have to back track every now and then. 9 out of 10
Okay so here is my rating for the game overall. In my eyes, this game deserves a 9.5 out of 10.
Well well, not bad ratings if I do say so myself. So, now that you have my input on it, please go ahead and play away...if the game allows it of course.

The Only Good Bug Is A Dead Bug!   Ultramanzenith
You: A super soldier from the future sent back in time to save the human race from an alien menace
Them: A race of extraterrestrial insects hellbent on devouring the human race, one person at a time.
The mission: KILL THEM ALL!
Story/gameplay: You play as Drake, a genetically-enhanced soldier from the year 2050 sent back in time to prevent the human race from becoming extinct by a race of insects out to devour the entire universe, one planet at a time! With your trusty laser carbine, and weapons and vehicles you later acquire throughout the game, you clear each level of the horde of arthropodic abominations, from the drones to the queens and guardians, until you have the final climactic battle on the aliens's ship.
The gameplay is pretty easy to grasp, and the tutorial is able to to clear up any loose ends you might have. Not only are you able to acquire different weapons, some convential and others mystical(personal favorite will ALWAYS be the Sun Shield), but you're able to drive all sorts of vehicles, either hindering or helping your progress through the game.
Graphics: This, I think, is where the game suffers because I've seen better graphics on the N64(Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Mario 64 come to mind), but they're not God-awful. While the characters, enemies, blood effects, and even setting don't look great, they do their job decently enough to where they don't bleed your eyeballs.
Sound: Both the sound design and soundtracks are top notch here. The subtle sounds of Drake's footprints to aliens blasting away while being blasted by either laser, gun, or cannon fire is almost cinematic worthy. And as for the soundtrack, it sounds superb, ranging from the subtle and mood-building slower themes, to the increasing-in-danger themes, to a slightly more upbeat theme. What I really like is how you're able to choose the background music everytime you pause the game. I often do that, scrolling through the music until I found the one I like and continue on my merry way blasting bugs to oblivion.
This game is awesome. I honestly think it's right up there with the likes of Mario64, Resident Evil 2, LoZ, and Star Fox. Again, it doesn't look the best, but the story, gameplay, and soundtracks more than make up for it. Highly reccommend it.
