Blue Reflection Review by: lolid23 - 7.2/10

A magical RPG.
I hope you are prepared, this is going to be a long review. I think I haven't said this before here on Vizzed, but turn-based RPGs are almost my least favorite genre in video games, ironically, however, I've played many turn-based RPGs, I'll admit that I've bought some of them just because the game is an exclusive (Blue Dragon on the Xbox 360, for example) but not really because I was genuinely interested in the game. In the case of Blue Reflection...this was my most waited game in 2017, believe it or not, I couldn't stop talking about this game in 2017 both on the internet (mainly on Youtube) and in real life, I was extremely interested in Blue Reflection, the game was on my radar before the localization was announced, I made a trip to the most popular mall in my city looking for the game on launch day, and I couldn't find it...I got the game exactly on December 26th, exactly 3 months after the game came out...this game was slightly censored in the west (I hate you, Koei Tecmo), and...I'm very anti-censorship...that's why when the game finally came out and I found out about the censorship, I did not want to buy it, in the end, I got Blue Reflection...I went against my principles but I played the game...anyway, enough about that...I played the game, and I like it, that's what it matters, I guess...

Story: Blue Reflection is a game best experienced with knowing as little as possible, the story is an important part of the game, and as I've said before, I would say that Blue Reflection is a good choice if you are looking for a Story-driven RPG (even more so than other games in the genre, perhaps). The main character is Hinako Shirai, a former ballet dancer who is forced to stop dancing because of a leg injury, she injured her leg during a competition and was forced to retreat...with her ballet career destroyed, she became introverted and closed her heart off from the rest of the world, ''Without my ballet, I'm as good as dead'', she says early in the game. I'm aware that the story of a game that involves another world (The Common, in this case), high school students, a character with shattered dreams, and other things might not be the most original story of all time, but still...somehow, I love the story in this game, I have to agree with the person who wrote the review of Digitallydownloaded.net, it all feels so...human, it's really nice seeing how Hinako Shirai doesn't speak much in the beginning of the game and throughout the game we see her develop as a character, even when I can't relate with most of the characters in the game including the main character, I still fell in love with the story and the characters, the characters are very believable in my opinion, in fact, I'll say it right now: This is the most moving game I've played in my life, Blue Reflection really moved me, and comparing the game with other games that made me cry at least a little (MOTHER 3, Xblaze Lost: Memories, Senran Kagura: Estival Versus, and more...), this game beats all of them, in my opinion, maybe it's just me, maybe I haven't played enough video games, but, again, this game really moved me, and, without spoiling anything, the ending is very bittersweet, the most bittersweet ending I've ever seen, I would say. I can talk more about the story, and give more details, but as I said, this game is best experienced with knowing as little as possible.

Graphics: The PS4 version clearly looks better than the PS Vita version (which also looks nice), I have played many anime style games and Blue Reflection has an amazing art style, I love the graphics of this game and without any doubt, these are my favorite graphics for an anime style game. I have to be honest, my love for the art style and graphics is a mix of objective and subjective, it's a fact that this looks better than many games like this, with great lighting, beautiful environments, awesome 3D models, and pretty 2D art by Mel Kishida, but comparing this game with Persona 5, one can see that there is a difference, perhaps it's a fact that Persona 5 looks better, but I prefer these graphics. referencing the review of Digitallydownloaded.net again, Matt C. described the art style as ''ethereal'', and that word really is fitting for the art style. I want to say that Blue Reflection is a case where I feel relaxed just by looking at a screenshot of the game or the 2D art, and that's something amazing, to say the least, I really can't mention another game where I feel relaxed just by looking at it, without the need of music. The beautiful art style and use of cold colors and soft lighting means that this game might be relaxing to look at, in my experience, this game can make you feel sleepy, but because of the graphics, not because the game is boring or something like that...I admit I often feel sleepy when I play Blue Reflection, and I love that.

Sound: The game has a soundtrack that is phenomenal at times, with many awesome themes, the music used in Hoshinomiya Girls High School I (sun) (and its variants ''I (rain)'' and ''I (crowd)'' ) is one of my favorite video game songs of all time, it's a musical theme that makes me feel very relaxed and also absolutely safe, when I listen to that music, I feel like I'm in the most secure place in the world or something like that, a magical forest, a floating place in the sky...I can imagine myself in a place where nothing and nobody can hurt me, and let me tell you, it feels amazing to listen to a video game song that makes you feel that way. Of course, there are many songs in the game, and I love a lot of them, OVERDOSE is an awesome battle theme, The music used in the main menu (BLUE REFLECTION) is very beautiful, and the final boss themes (yes, themes) are all amazing...overall, it's a soundtrack I absolutely love, and the use of dubstep for most (if not all) of the themes used in the battles means I'm appreciating the genre even more. The fact that this soundtrack contains at least one theme that became one of my favorite video game songs of all time is enough to give this category a 10. If we talk about the voice acting, I'm not the best judge of japanese voices but I can say that the japanese voice acting is mostly great, at least...with the exception of Chihiro Inoue's voice...her voice is annoying...but other than that...perhaps the voice acting is usually great, as I just said, I'm not the best judge of japanese voices, and to be honest, I would have liked an english dub...

Addictiveness: After beating this game (twice), I still don't love turn-based RPGs, If you don't love turn-based RPGs, this game won't change that, but if you enjoy the games in the genre at least a little, this game is a good choice. The game is, simply put, a simplified RPG, yes, the battle system is easy to use and it has a little of depth, your characters level up, and there are items you can use...however...the maximum level for the three playable characters (Hinako, Yuzu and Lime) is level 50, the rest of the characters are just support, the game also lacks a virtual currency, if you don't know about Blue Reflection, you would think that every RPG has virtual money you can use to buy items, equipment and maybe some extra features...well, not this game, the high school in Blue Reflection has vending machines and a store, but you don't use money to buy...whatever (it seems that there is a limit for the amount of times you can ''buy'' something, however). To progress through the game, you have to complete missions and talk with the other main girls (Fumio Taya and Yuri Saiki, for example) in order to get rating points, you will need to get a minimum amount of rating points to advance with the story, and the game doesn't have a time limit, so, if you want to see the optional events (which can be very funny by the way), you can do that...take your time if you want, you don't need to hurry. Of course, the missions are very repetitive, in my experience with RPGs, these games are usually repetive, even more so than other genres at times...even so, this game doesn't bore me and I have fun defeating demons in The Common over and over again, and the events in the game (story events and optional events, doesn't matter) are entertaining to watch.

Difficulty: It's true...this game is very easy, the game has three difficulty levels (Easy, Normal and Hard) and even on the hardest difficulty the game is not a big challenge, if you aren't careful, you can lose in a boss battle or two, and one or two missions can be very dfficult, but the rest of the missions are very easy, even when you lose, there isn't a real punishment for that, since the game doesn't have a virtual currency and defeating enemies and bosses never gives you experience points, when your characters are defeated, you don't lose anything and don't have to travel a long distance to get to the place where you lost, unlike other RPGs. I defeated the final boss on my first try...overall, it's one of the easiest RPGs I have played in my life, if not the easiest turn-based RPG I have ever played, and because of that, I recommend this game if you have never played a turn-based RPG before and don't have a problem with playing a game with a lot of story.

Depth: The game is shorter than other RPGs and it only has one ending, the fact that this game has many missions to take and a lot of events to see means that this game has a lot to do however, when I played this game for the second time, I saw many events I didn't see when I played it for the first time. Blue Reflection even has a secret boss...it also has many trophies to get...I don't care about trophies but yeah, it has a lot of trophies...I don't think it's possible to get all the trophies in a single playthrough...

Blue Reflection is one of my least favorite PS4 games, it might be my second least favorite PS4 game only ahead of Omega Quintet, but still, I like this game, I admit I was only interested in the game because of the magical girl theme and the outfits of Hinako, Yuzu and Lime when they transform (I love the transformation sequences), but even so, the graphics, soundtrack and characters are all amazing, and if you are a fan of turn-based RPGs unlike me, this game is very recommended, I have played this game and I don't regret it...that much, at least...Koei Tecmo America (or Koei Tecmo outside of Japan) is a bad publisher, if you are interested in Blue Reflection...I recommend it...just...buy the game used or don't pay a lot of money for it...
