The Power of Two - Binary Land
The Power of Two:
Binary Land
For the NES/Famicom

Introduction/Story
The game begins with two love-crossed penguins (Namely, Gurin and Malon) trapped in the universe known as "Binary Land", set forth in an endless spree of mazes. They need to meet up at each other at the top of the screen to free their heart and make their love come true! But there will be many obstacles in the way, most notably spiders, cobwebs, and other creatures. If they don't make it in time or get caught along the way, they won't be able to live forever happiness. It is up to you, the player, to guide the two alternate penguins to the one they love most; each other! It's a surprisingly underrated and underplayed game that not only looks and sounds nice, but compels you to playing more of this extraordinary action-strategy game.

Game play

The game play, in itself, is actually quite simple; You guide two penguins that travel in opposite left and right directions. Simple, yes. Easy, not a chance. You not only need to coordinate the two alternate-moving characters, but you also have to guide them through a maze, and clear away obstacles in your path without getting caught on either side. However, the game features a broad difficulty curve, which easily allows new players to hop into the game and at least try it, while reserving higher levels for players with immense brain power. It's fun, highly interactive, and even mixes up the game in higher levels with new enemies that have various effects to the game, like a partner-swapping bird and an un-hittable fire ball. It is also very difficult to obtain high scores, as there is always a challenge to get even the smallest amount of points in this game. It's rather addicting, for both the casual gamer and the puzzle master.
Graphics

For a action puzzler, it does fairly great with it's graphics, despite the limitations of the NES. It always keeps a solid frame rate throughout the game, even when there are too many sprites on-screen, and has nice animations for everything, which feels realistic (Even when the spider's or penguin's speeds increase, their animation speed increases too!) It is very clear to know what everything is and what to do in this game. Even though some sprites lack detail, it's quite substantial compared to other puzzle games out there.

Sounds/Music

To go along with it, the game has some nice calming music and sounds which can lull you into the game fairly quickly. It's a bit catchy, but also quite repetitive, as the main music track is re-used in every part of the game. It lacks sound effects, but in the least reserves it for important events, like power-ups or collectibles. Overall, it gears towards keeping you focused in the game, which you will desperately need.

Overall

Overall, this is a fairly nice and complete game. It's not "The best game in the world," but it will do very will to pass your time for maybe an hour or two, or have fun once in a while. It's quite a fun game to share with friends or family, or a fun game to compete against one another in a tournament. With it's lovable characters and a compelling, yet simple, story, it is certainly worth a try for puzzle and strategy gamers alike!

Binary Land Game Description

In this game, you have to guide two penguins, one male and one female, through top-down vertical levels. The penguins are in love with each other and must be re-united! The penguins start on opposite sides, separated by walls, bricks, and other obstacles. You take control of one of the penguins. The other makes exactly the same movements as you, but in the opposite direction. So if for example you see an enemy to the left of the penguin you are not controlling, you have to fire to the right in order to hit it. You have to reach the top of the level in such a way that the two penguins will arrive at the top square at the same time, coming from opposite sides. Enemies such as spiders will put web on your way or attack you. You can kill them for points. There are various power-ups that appear randomly on the levels. You should also be careful not to run out of time.

This game is all about patience and thinking fast. I used to love this game as a kid! I used to reach over level 20.
